Secret Base

Ichiro Suzuki was the most unconventional and electrifying baseball player of the 21st century. During the 2000s, he and the Mariners pieced together a beautiful, infuriating story.
Corrections:
• 1:41 - The Y-axis labels are incorrect. A-Rod did have more total bases than any other player in this series, but he actually tallied 17 total bases.
• 3:30 - Script error. The Mariners lost Randy Johnson one year and Ken Griffey Jr. the next, not the other way around.
• 29:10 - Typo. Winn’s OPS was 1.071, not .1071.

My Little Ichiro Story: I remember in 2017 when Ichiro was in Miami and close to retiring. I was at a game in Philadelphia with my friend. The game got rained out before it even started. As we were walking out through the concourse I noticed someone working out on the field in the rain. It was Ichiro. We walked down to the field and for the next 30 minutes we watched Ichiro workout on a soaked field, in pouring rain, 2 hours before a game that now was not evening going to be played. This was nothing left to prove, 3,000 hit, first ballot Hall of Famer, Ichiro, busting his ass in the rain for a team that was on their way to winning only 77 games He then signed an autograph for a little girl who had waited all this time with her parents as well standing near us. Such an unbelievable player with an absurd work ethic. Best pure hitter of all time.

@buckfuttler2877
@buckfuttler2877 4 года назад
yep, if ichiro just comes to MLB at age 20, he only needs 1130-something hits to pass Rose. if he plays 7 seasons, he only needs to average 160 or so hits a year. easy money. he would have been WELL over 4500. Legend of a player and one of the funnest athletes ive ever watched.

After breaking Sisler's record, Ichiro visited his grave that offseason
@emeraldaly7646
@emeraldaly7646 4 года назад
Sisler's daughter was also in attendance at the game, and Ichiro had a word with her as well while the game was ongoing. Play stopped for 3 or 4 minutes (it was, after all, an all-time record being broken). The full clip of the moment, which understandably doesn't fit into a format like this, shows Dave exercising a deeply underappreciated skill for commentators -- knowing when to shut the fuck up. He made an excited call of what happened (which we do see in this video) then for well over a minute he just let the scene play out on its own. It was poetry all itself.
@TheBrainSpecialist

It's the ultimate showing of respect. It kinda reminds me of what happened at the Brazilian Grand Prix last year, The head of Honda's F1 division visited Ayrton Senna's grave the week before the race. Senna was always associated with McLaren and Honda, he was even friends with Soichiro Honda, the company's founder. That weekend, teams running Honda engines finished 1st and 2nd, with a McLaren rounding out the podium. The Kicker? It was on what would have been Soichiro Honda's 113th birthday.

It's hard to overstate how amazing Ichiro was. There will never be a more pure hitter or defensive outfielder in my lifetime. He had zero (0) games with 4 strikeouts. He had more games with 4 hits than he had games with 3 strikeouts. After that throw so soon after joining the MLB, no one tested his arm ever again. That's why his outfield assists were so low for his career. I am so glad I had grown into loving the game by the time Ichiro joined it.

I get tears in my eyes every time I see Ichiro’s record-breaking hit (258). As a Vietnamese, watching baseball when I was young was uninteresting, because I had no role models (no baseball players were Viet), but seeing another Asian dominate a sport with not only talent but respect made me so happy, and finally gave me an idol that I could look up to and support. Still my favorite player of any sport after so many years. Baseball misses you, Ichiro!

As a life long Mariners fan I've been watching and rewatching this series with tears in my eyes, not for the staggering lack of success, but for the truly bright and happy moments that have happened, even in the bleakest of years. The Mariners are not a team that wins. That's the Yankees. The Mariners are a team that has fun playing the game. They make their fans love the game not because they love winning the game, but because they love playing and watching the game. I went to my first Mariners game when I was 6 in April 2001, and I've loved the Mariners, but more importantly, I've loved the game, ever since. For most of their history the Mariners have embodied MLB's slogan "Let the Kids Play", long before so many other teams did, and long before the MLB tried to outgrow it's stuffy, crotchety BBWAA leanings. Thank you for this series. Thank you for the research and the time you've taken to truly capture the essence of a team that so many overlook, dismiss and dislike. Nothing more mariners than having multiple generational talents at multiple positions in your organization and either wasting their career or watching them win rings on other teams.

To a lesser extent the expos are a little like them but instead of being saved they had to move and get a name change. They could've headed up their rotation with pedro and randy johnson and if they were smart designed their lineup around Geurrero, Alou and Floyd

Best Record in the Nba:Warriors 73-9 (Lost the finals) Best nfl record:Pstriots 16-0 (lost in the Superbowl) Best mlb record: Mariners 116 wins (lost alcs)
@markfrommaryland3825

Actually, though the Mariners who won 116 games were a titanic team and maybe the best ever, the record is shared with the 1906 Cubs, who only played 152 games to do it (116-36), so the edge goes to the team from the dawn of modern baseball. I don't think that takes anything away from the 2001 Mariners. Interesting that none of these superlative teams won the championship game or series. Neither did the 1906 Cubs, who were upset by the White Sox. Can you imagine how delerious Chicago's baseball fans must have been that year? The Cubs did win it all the next two years.

I’d just like to point out how perfectly the Mike Blowers prediction is used: for the first time, this wonderful, crazy story has become genuinely sad. And this bit of complete stupidity just turns it around so brilliantly, gets us laughing and smiling again and brings us some happiness to end this episode. Goddammit Jon how do you do this to my emotions

Mariners led MLB in attendance in 2001 and 2002, and were 2nd in attendance in 2003. They didnt even make the playoffs in 02 or 03. Fan support cannot be understated!
