I mean C'mon man WHO has never heard these AMAZING RTHM ACES sing 3rd rate romance and NOT LOVED IT! Bravo Gentlemen. Fantastic job. Each and every single one of you. Truly legends of Southern Rock, Country Rock. LOVE LOVE LOVE!! Woot Woot.
Man, you're so right. The drumming here is so integral to the musical sound -- not just banging noise. They're such an ensemble... drummer is part of every phrase.
@@newyorkslim2001 It's a bad habit to just bang as loud and play as fast as you can. This is tight, controlled, and really unique beat. It sings. This is good drumming right here. He only needs one tom to get the job done.
I first saw the Aces in 1977, and that concert had a real impact on my life. The band performed all the music from the Stacked Deck album plus bunch of others. Yep, not only was the music excellent that evening, I also met a woman at the concert who would later become my wife. Still, after all these years and so much great music, ARA remains "amazing" and one of our favorite bands.
One of my all time favorite albums: Too Stuffed To Jump. Came out when I was 19 and it's been wore out several times over. Not a dud or a filler on it. Great guitar work. God bless you , boys. I'm there with ya.
Oh god , I was just that age and I loved the frog setting up on the wooden motorcycle, epic, totally epic, Sammy Kershaw made me mad he made their song popular , they should have enjoyed the status, most people think he coined the phrase in the song
The guitarist on this video is Kelvin Holly. The original was Barry Byrd Burton which has since passed on. May he RIP. Barry Burton was the one who recorded the song in studio with The ARA band. Holly came into the picture long after in 1995 or so. But he is a darn good player too.
I can't shake the memory anchor I have for this song. I was living in Gretna, and everyday I'd drive across the Huey P. Long into New Orleans, and this music transports me immediately to the mid 70s, when my young son and I would sing this at the top of our voices. What an amazing piece of music!!!!
It's hard to hear any criticisms for the Aces. Always will love Russell & Billy. Change isn't always bad. Russell is the most talented singer, songwriter EVER. It IS different without Bird but we all age, I'm just grateful to be able to still hear Russell, been his fan since 70's. thx
I thought they sounded great. Age is tough on everyone, performers and non-performers alike, but I heard the Aces live about 2 years ago, and I loved it. I am a singer, player and writer, now 64, and first met them back in the mid 1970s on a visit to Memphis to see my cousin who was working at Tanner at the time (he also played bass with Bobby Bare and sat in with these boys every now and then). This generation is fading fast, you better get it while you can (I would probably be considered one notch behind them, but not far). My cousin, who never had a day job, and lived and supported his family by writing songs and jingles, and playing or recording music in one form or another, around Memphis, every day of his life since he graduated from North Texas State with a Masters in Jazz Guitar, until the day he passed away last year. As far as this fool, until 2013 I felt no differences when comparing my 20 year old stage hog self, to my then 60 year old even more of a stage hog self, with my voice better than it was at 20 (I thought). But on St John's Day 2014 I got burned and spent 34 days in the Burn Center. About 9 months later I contracted Norovirus from a cruise ship, then two years after that I was diagnosed with both Rheumatoid Arthritis and Recurrent Gout, OUCH! I am screwed, RA does have effects on the voice, think Green Acres, Mr. Haney. BUT, for some, it comes and goes, and for me it does, to a great extent. So I still have some great days, then bad ones, then great ones, ABABABAB :0 ) I am grateful for the good ones, I try to record then, and I hope whoever chances to have their ear's bent on one of my bad days, can tolerate it a little, and pray that it turns to a good one quickly. And maybe give the Aces a little break too (but I am not a hater, and I like the original solo better too) hey are older than me.
I cover this song, and after seeing this video, did a little research, as I had never heard any other tunes by them. They put out out 18 albums, but only this song ever made through here in Canada. I will have to look up some of the rest of their catalog. This tune is a classic, and I loved it the first time I heard it, took 40+ years to get around to adding it to my set list.
RIP Russell Smith. I agree with willysunday that he wrote this all-time favorite song by a legendary 70's country band. Btw, at 2:29, he cracked me up with the AARP discount. Wonder how many drivers think of that?
Loved this band for years, Sammy Kershaw covered it and did an awesome job, there’s also a garage band of 3 young men on You Tube that does a great job covering it!
Reminds me of the old days when I was wild & free!!! Living in Florida at the time & only 29. The girls flowed like wine & Love was sweet & kind. Now I am with the same sweet beautiful woman for 18 years who is the Gods greatest blessing, & I am true. (If not she would kick my ass! LOL)
Agree. what a unique song from good times long ago. the lyrics are priceless and the situation likely happened numerous times . a fun song that never get tired of hearing. nothing has come close to this gem.
Some many great lines… “I’ll even tell you I love you if you want me too” “I ain’t never done this thing before, have you? Yes I have, but only a time or two”!
I was living in Minneapolis in 1975 attending Dunwoody Ind. Institue and working the early morning shift at an in-store bakery and would hear this on the radio.
They opened for Jimmy Buffett in Anaheim California in 77 or 78, I dont quite recall. What a show that was. I think Jimmy had them come out at the end and jam with him. Of course, the Coral Reefers were much fewer then.
As much as the guitarist did his own thing the song still rocks & thats what really counts when a song evokes a happy smile thats simply priceless...whooop
I learned this tune from Jesse Winchester's " Learn To Love It" album...he also covered " The End is Not in Sight". Great tunes.. Been performing this one myself for about 40 years.
I saw the video of them from the 70's when they were young & cute. Then saw this & thought "yikes" ! But after 2 kamakazees, i thought they are still pretty frickin good. One of my favorite songs! I think i'll request this song in church for gospel sing night.
When they do this song, you think they're laid-back, cry-in-my-beer musicians. But let me tell you, these dudes rock out hard when the crowd wants to go there. Your age does not mater, they'll wear your ass out jamming!
i luv the aces, went to see u guys in dothan alabama way back in the 70s! u was opening up for some guy by the name of jimmy buffet, i wasnt quite sure who he was but i knew who u guys were!!!
I was impressed how big of sound they got considering how few of them there were on stage. I didn't mind the changes on the guitar part. It is pretty common for live versions to differ, even on signature songs.
Ya know,..I'm sure I'm going to get some haters respond to this but I've GOT to say it. I LOVE the Rhythm Aces and in my opinion THIS was their FLAGSHIP song! To guitar players such as myself ...this song was a "Guitar Anthem"...it had some of the most unique and coolest licks I had certainly ever heard. I don't know if the guitarist in this video was the "original" player on the record or not,...but it just INFURIATES me when artists DELIBERATELY "butcher" their "million seller" tunes (as this guitar player did) simply because they are bored with playing them! This guy is clearly a GREAT player...and for whatever reason he just decides to INTENTIONALLY "screw" this "once great" GREAT guitar solo! It was terrible!! OK haters....I'm all yours....
No hater here, feel the Same way you do. Man Icouldnt wait for that song to come on the radio with that unique voice and that Fantastic Guitar! Out Made the song what it was. A joy to listen to. A memory that won't go away. This gutarist ( Who is Not the original) is damb good and you know He could do it Right. Pisses me off the Same as you.
no hate here but should have left the original guitar work original. It is pretty true to the original except for minor changes to lyrics. When this song started to be played on the radio it was alongside groups like Santana and other rock groups. there was a lot of variety then. you had the Carpenters, Santana, Moody Blues, and this group all being played on the same stations. there were a lot of novelty songs then also. This song was original, unique , and brilliant lyrics that were fun but the story surely has happened many many times.
Russell, you're so wonderful!!! My favorite singer/writer/musician EVER!!!!! Love all your videos from the 70's to today..have everything you've ever recorded.
