The saga of the anime localizers has been wild so far, with an Asmongold reaction to Rev Says Desu sparking interest in the topic of bad anime localizations even from anime fans in Japan. Voice actor and anime dub writer Jamie Marchi has been at the forefront of the controversy, with an infamous Jamie Marchi MHA panel and her responses to people or X (Twitter) gaining attention. She also made a cringe TikTok responding to Asmongold that has to be seen to be believed! It's all here as we go down the rabbit hole with edited segments from three Twitch streams and post edit commentary. You can check out these segments in full if you want more over on my Twitch channel.

The reason they don't just become writers is that they care more about "getting out the message" than about the work itself. They don't have the passion to develop the skills needed to become a popular writer, but by parasitizing an already-popular work, they can disseminate "the message" without having to make anything new. The 'need' the popularity, and coopting someone elses work is a shortcut to making their work part of something popular.

A few are also failed writers. Because the way they think leads to bad writing and makes it hard for them to create anything of value at all. That's why you find them using someone else's work to deliver their own ideas.

This is very true. There is a 1946 essay by one Albert Maltz called "What Shall We Expect of Writers." It's definitely worth a read as Maltz accurately predicted how Hollywood would die if it continued to push the Marxist idea that the arts and media have no purpose other than as a weapon of subversion. None of this shit is new, it's been going on for over a century.

@@SergioLeonardoCornejo In this case our Exhibit A here if we're charitable is someone whose basically spent the past 30 years trying to grind the English VA scene, and... looks like they've largely subsisted on lining up strings of minor bit parts, although that's not to say that they haven't managed to land the odd frontliner position. So I would expect she's having to largely operate at baseline Industry Rates, instead of being able to demand enhanced rates. So while it doesn't excuse her antics... It is understandable why someone coming up on their 50s looking back on a career of being a VA that largely amounts to strings of bit parts might not exactly be happy with their life choices. Mind on the personal side our Exhibit A here is a divorcee that's currently single and doesn't appear to have had kids of her own. So as the Reaper is beginning to noisily sharpen that scythe behind her as she closes on 50 her "legacy" effectively amounts to voicing a few prominent Lewd Characters like the female lead of Shimoneta, and a truckload of bit parts.

@@roar104 Skillless is going a bit too far for our Exhibit A here. Possessed by Envy due to having expectations outside the scope of her abilities leading to the being drawn to Envy focused ideologies, likely. In turn it looks like she started acting up in her late 30s. Where she's now closing on 50, is still largely setting up strings of bit part jobs, isn't married, doesn't have kids, and likely doesn't have marketable skills outside of the VA work she's been doing for ~30 years at this point.

To me this drama comes down to people wanting to see a job done right and the people that are supposed to be doing the job feeling entitled and pretending to be victims or saying just deal with it, with Marchie acting like both. Hard to feel bad when being served a stinking mess. Also like always loved the video.

The Localizers made it about then despite Japan Studios using AI Assisted in house translations for last 5-7 years and them just hearing about it now as they aren't in the loop as much as they were That press release sounded more like a "stop inquiring when we are outsourcing translation work,cause we are not" more then anything Outsource work has been a point of leaked to media and piracy as outsource translators share copies with friends and family with one dumb ass accidently doing a "foward all" back to the studio they were working for sharing the game (one of the Final Fantasy) Japan Studios consider outsourcing a security risk....it isnt even about bad localizations, they have been replaced by A.I. in projects from 5-7 years ago and those projects are starting to come out of Japan not needing outsourced translations

The sad thing about this, is that translators in the main are getting a really rough deal. But all the sympathy and support they should be getting just gets wrecked when ANY of them pull a stunt like this. How are we supposed to support humans getting a fair wage when there are public questions about whether or not you can be trusted to do the job in the first place?

As someone who has started dabbling in writing my own stories, the existence of someone like Jamie is honestly disheartening. I am aware the majority of localizers aren't as bad as her, and as an American writing in English the odds of anything from me coming across her desk is vanishingly small. But, the idea that someone could change the tone or dialogue I intended for a character or scene just because they think they could make it better is incredibly frustrating to think about.

We have no problem on Anime, Manga, & Novel department here in South East Asia. The problem is on JP Games, we're getting the shitty American Localizations rather than accurate Translations. Complete with the censorship & cut-content for the US release. It's freaking annoying as hell, we're not even American, why the heck are we getting their shoddy Localizations.

Same with here in Europe. We don't have the US draconian and puritan laws, yet we still get the weirdly censored stuff. Didn't use to, but lately sellers and distributers have realised it's just easier to get the US stuff and then sell it here. It's annoying enough that I've pretty much stoped buying from the major distributers and sail the seven seas. And mod as many of them as possible to get the removed content back or remove censors, which thankfuly has proven to be relatively easy.

I just want to watch anime to escape, how bad the world is, not be reminded while watching a show about a dragon being a maid for a 9-5 worker. So there is a huge difference between having to change a sentence due to there not being a proper word or phrase for it in the language you're translating to and just inserting something that was never there. The dragon maid line might seem small but it messes with the characterisation and the actual joke the author was going for. Lucoa is oblivious as hell to some human standards such as skin exposure. You see this throughout the story where she gets whisked off a beach by a female lifeguard for being too exposed and so on. She is highly suggestive to a kid but she doesn't seem to understand why. The kid calls her a succubus on multiple occasions. It has nothing to do with the patriarchy but rather those little laws called public decency and that I feel confident in saying that both men and women would judge or make comments about anyone if they walk out in public wearing something that covers nothing. The whole gag is leading up to Tohru saying why not change your body instead? Which is funny as hell because as a dragon Lucoa can that do. They are shapeshifters. Rather then the worse joke of implying that men are going to be gagging for her exposure again.

One of the things that most annoys me about this whole thing is that these lolcalizers would almost certainly tell you that "cultural appropriation" is "problematic" or "de-colonizing non-Western media of Western influence" is desirable, yet aren't they guilty of doing both of those things? I'm so happy that Japan is starting to catch on to this. As a long-time fan of anime (40+ years, as I've mentioned before), it's the Japanese-ness that's a big part of the appeal. These lolcalizers trampling all over that in their need to score some "woke" points really ticks me off. I really hope the Japanese publishers/studios begin to take at least more of an interest in ensuring their product is more accurately translated when localized. In regards to your uploads, you might also want to consider at least mirroring them on another platform. I know some people are making a little money on Rumble these days, not really comparable to RU-vid, but still some, and apparently it's really easy to use as a backup. Does it automatically or something once you set it up, from what I understand.

The problem I have with localizers adding things to content is that oftentimes, the stuff they're adding is on-the-nose or of the moment, and sure, it might work in the immediate timeframe the content is released. But time moves on. Look at all the video games (esp. JRPGs) that have localizing that is now incredibly dated because it used, say, 90's slang or referenced current events by the localizers. I feel that if localizers didn't try to inject that type of context or lingo/slang into the content, it would be more universally accessible and remain more timeless regardless of when someone is viewing it, so that even 20 years later, that anime can still be enjoyed without being pulled out by, say, something like a random "Bill Clinton" joke or something.

I got a whole lot of sympathy for all the good translators, trying their best to deliver the best possible translation, who might lose their job to AI. But i rather have some random pronounce swapping due to the AI not gewtting the context of who says what than having stuff put in that makes no sense with intention. That's also why i hope the "good" translators will not sit by silently and let those bad eggs get away with it. I mean changing the meaning of information to fir their own agenda and using it for blatant propaganda is much closer to a Nazi than not having a vagina or being a virgin. What is wrong with people? How do the higher ups see stuff like this and be like "yeah nailed it..". When i cook for a restaurant and start changing orders around to deliver vegan food to everybody no matter what they ordered and if someone finds out i call them a Nazi and virgin i can't expect to keep my job for long. That's not how it works or at least not how it should work. Sure if nobody notices it will go along until someone does and then obviously many will be upset even if it tasted ok because people don't like not getting somethign different than what they ordered.

@NatalieXHunter
@NatalieXHunter 6 месяцев назад
Yeah, for a short clip like that, maybe even for whole episodes of certain shows, it's already there, but if you think of all the things a character might do with their voice (putting on a silly voice to mock another character, doing a foreign accent but badly, emphasizing things in a weird way for comedic effect to name but a few) then it becomes more difficult for scripts that don't just have normal conversations where the actors always speak consistently. This type of thing could probably still be done, don't get me wrong, but it may be more effort and less cost effective to license a voice and do all that tweaking than to just hire an actor who can read the script notes and perform it.
@NelsonStJames
@NelsonStJames 6 месяцев назад
It's kind of interesting the correlation between often how defensive people will get and how much in the wrong they happen to be. On a second note, it's incredible anyone can get hired to translate something when they aren't fluent in the language they're translating. How does that even work? A normal person wouldn't even think to apply for job as a translator knowing they didn't know the language they were supposedly going to be translating.
@konni0883
@konni0883 6 месяцев назад
It's great to see you again and that you're doing well @NatalieXHunter . Here's my take on this localisation issue. Maybe publishers and foreign distributors need to hire Japanese natives who are good to fluent in various foreign languages. Of course, these Japanese native translators would need to be trained and vetted, in order to perform for and represent theses publishers and foreign distributors like model professionals. Translators in the mould of Studio Khara's Dan Kanemitsu or similar come to mind. As for A.I. being used for translations, I'm of two minds here. On one side, these localisers had it coming and I enjoy seeing them squirm and cry, as translations will be less contaminated with western woke ideology. On the other hand, the quality of translations will (temporarily) dip, as they will partially lack a certain human touch. There's also a danger that certain (political) biases can also be programmed and integrated into A.I.. Model professional translators can definitely use A.I. as an additional tool to assist them. It's a double-edge sword. Anyway, these woke localisers had it coming. Let's hope they get blacklisted from their profession and banned for all eternity. They deserve no forgiveness. Not ever. Let's hope individuals like Jamie Marchi, Monica Rial, Daman Mills, etc. will have it coming, too in due time, and that they will keep on taking vast amounts of justified flack and then some, just to thoroughly rub it in their faces and to burn it into their minds for all eternity. It’s time to return to the days where translations were never done during the development or production of certain products, but to do translations after the completion of the original (Japanese language) version as it was the way things were done in the past. The tried, tested and successfully proven. Translating Japanese I.P.s under Japanese norms never ever hurt or harmed foreign or domestic users, customers, etc. in any way, due to historical, religious or cultural differences. The Japanese historical, religious or cultural differences are what made and still make Japanese I.P.s successful in the first place. Domestic audiences and fanbases are the lifeblood of every successful I.P.. Foreign audiences and fanbases are a bonus though. This also reminds me of what J.C. Staff producer Astushi Fujishiro said in regards to foreign fans of anime. Here are some of his quotes. “Rather than changing things for foreigners,” “simply carry on with our style.” “I don’t think overseas fans have caused big changes in our style.” “When I think about it, the Japanese style of animation has been well-received overseas,” “So rather than changing things for foreigners, we simply carry on with our style.” “While we are aware of overseas fans, we generally don’t make changes for their sake.” Foreign fans of Japanese I.P.s want translations to be faithful to the original with the creator’s original vision intact, uncut, unedited and uncensored. The same thing goes for the Japanese historical, religious or cultural differences that are included and embedded. That’s what also makes Japanese I.P.s stand out. I'd even be in favour of reintegrating translator notes into the subtitles. Just like in the old days. Former fansubbers such as VKLL, who fansubbed Sailor Moon Sailorstars and the Evangelion movies in the late 1990s and bootlegged them on VHS, come to mind. Keep up the great work @NatalieXHunter!😉

Been watching Deltora Quest lately and it's interesting having a fan sub that legitimately adds value to compare to. There's a bunch of situations where something was changed between the manga and anime where the translator leaves a note explaining why they deferred to the manga while making the subs. It's slightly jarring at times when the audio clearly doesn't match up with the sub, but it's not like that doesn't happen in professionally translated series. I've seen plenty of subs use a character's given name when the audio is obviously their family name with an honorific, or where terms like senpai and aniiki are replaced with their name. People who legitimately love Japanese culture and/or the thing they're translating can improve the watchers experience with certain notes or changes. It's just too bad the people paid to do it are more interested in applying their politics to the show.

I think the industry is corrupt from the top. The people who are hired dont care about anime, they just want what they think makes them the most money. They dont care about the fans, rather instead they'd gladly change what anime is perceived as in the west in order to bring the largest possible audience. So in a way, they're trying to corrupt anime fans too. I genuinely didn't think it was this bad.

That doesn't fit with what I've seen. From what I've seen the actual License Holders have been pretty good at being responsive to issues in the LN & Manga space when they're discovered. Like Natalie said Seven Seas did fix things once they understood there was an issue. My impression is that within the Localization Industry that there's a group of bad apples that are causing problems for everyone else, and the relatively low budget of localization means that there's not _that_ much oversight if one of these bad apples does their thing. In turn from what our Exhibit A here has said _they're_ the one responsible for the infamous line, rather it being the result of some kind of directive from the License Holder. Crunchyroll in turn is a bit infamous for prioritizing speed/volume over quality, which I suspect is a bigger factor than anything else on Crunchyroll's part in the particular situation of Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. I remember on the Translator proper side there was a bit of a scandal awhile back where they did explain how they're given very little time and not paid well to handle the translation work due to Crunchyroll's focus on Speed/Volume driven by their focus on Simulcast/Simuldub.

I have no sympathy for any translator/localiser who doesn't speak japanese and/or doesn't respect the original author/work. Translation is a difficult job requiring expertise in at least two languages and maybe even the two cultures. You have to be at least somewhat of a writer yourself and be able to judge if what you've written flows properly and conveys what it's supposed to. The value a translator adds is that a person unfamiliar with the original language can understand the text, which is, an ENORMOUS value add! Treating the text as their twitter blog adds no value for the reader and only satisfies their desires. Adding value my ASS.

Looking over the relevant individual's IMDB page... It looks like they started voice acting anime in 1990, and managed it looks like 8 roles in the 90s which appear to largely be for minor background characters. While they did manage to get a lot of roles in the 00s it looks like those did continue to be relatively minor roles, and if I'm reading this correctly doesn't really hit a fron runner role until 2010 as Panty with Panty & Stocking, but from there largely returned to obscurity while somehow managing to land the odd videogamee speaking role. In turn it looks like she married in 1999 at 22, divorced in 2005 at 28, and has been single since. Ironically one of the stand outs from more recently was voicing the female lead of Shimoneta, in addition to a few other roles along those lines. For whatever reason it looks like she's gotten to where she's reasonably able to get work, but isn't exactly in demand meaning the gig aren't going to necessarily be paying that well. While it doesn't excuse the lack of professionalism... It is understandable why she might have built up some resentment after grinding in the English VA industry for ~30 years and still being someone that does a lot of work where they do a bit part, that will show up in a few episodes but the line reads for the gig could probably reasonably fit on a single page and might amount to little more than a glorified day of work at a relatively low rate.

It should have never been tolerated and seeing these people angry about alternatives to their behavior emerging proves they're doing it on purpose and are a problem.

13:18 Man that's a quote that aged. Smalltime AI youtuber ripped Marchie's Voice, re-did the Dragonmaid clip with the real text and then mocked localisers. And the AI sounded like it had more emotion than Marchie's actual recording. It's WILD. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IbgDZ8PsysY.html The only worry I have is that a few years down the line licensed AI Voices will be cheap enough that any new VAs will be facing an absolutely monumental uphill battle for getting a foot into the industry, be it over here or in JP.

Yeah, I think it can be done for things with relatively common speech patterns like that, but to do something like a whole movie with AI voices and it be comparable to what human actors currently do is a long way off. For small parts though, I think it'll be in regular use pretty soon, and for things like indie games and stuff it'll become the standard.

One thing about the quality of dubs is that it's pretty clear that if dub producers WANT a good dub, they can get one. Toradora for example has a great dub. Maybe you like the japanese more but calling the english dub bad is crazy talk. Other good dubs are FMA and koe no katachi (I'm actually not 100% sure on this one anymore. It's been a couple years). But they are sadly few and far between because the people making them don't give them the attention they need most of the time for whatever reason.

The Fansub community gave them the chance to legaly translate but they did not do their job right The Dub industry have so many opportunity despide have 99 chances but they fumbled it 100 times by destroy their fellow Actor that have big exposure over a Broly movie and till this day they still slander the actor and look at them now, the fact that Japanesse company can just use their JP talent voice with AI to speak english or have their JP talent speak english will be a norm after the JP audience finaly see all of the shitshow both localiser and the dubbing blunder... The Localiser really similiar how DC and Marvel comic downfall, alot of people and long hardcore fans already explain it better you can easily look it up in YT these days, that is prove how bad the comic industry are. The Dub case really remind me how Disney Fired John Lasseter over baseless accusation, use his alcholism, hugging and a very critical father figure like personaly as weapon to tainted his reputation to the point even some big animation youtuber also join the bandwagon over some planned movie John did cancelled the project. Yet now Disney and Pixar are in hot mess and the people work with Lasseter at Disney and Pixar quit and join the studio John are currently working at Skydance. The dubbing industry have chance but they need to reset and better do their job fast because how fast AI voice over developing.

From where I'm standing, what these localizers are doing is basically cultural appropriation since they're appropriating another work with an entirely different culture and twisting it to meet their ends. I can't find myself sympathizing with such people especially if they flaunt how powerful they are. There's a saying in my country: "Life's like a wheel: sometimes you're up and looking down on everyone and other times, you're at the bottom looking up. Be kind lest the wheel of karma demands its taxes". It's a rough translation of my understanding of the saying but it applies here very well. In terms of AI, as with everything that exists in this universe, I can see the potential of it to help and do good but it can also be used to harm people. I'd say a balance must be struck and to attain that, the bad actors and those who poison the well must be expelled or else there will be no progress. Finally, I'd argue that some dubs have great acting. The first thing that comes to my mind is always the Baccano! English dub. Granted its an anime set in the US, the acting was superb and the lines were great. Another example from what I hear is Cowboy Bebop though I admittedly haven't watched the dub, I hear that it's pretty good. So yeah. Quite the conundrum but I'd say this is karma coming to collect for all the years these localizers abused their power. Either way, great video and I wish you good luck on your endeavors. I'll be watching your progress with a silent thumbs up in the corner over there. :)

I think I've said all I have to say on the matter at this point. A lot of hate localizers got wasn't just for their work but attitude as well. If they had been humble, people would sympathize. If they apologized, then most people would've let them off. Most people would see a human there instead of the mouth piece localizers have portrayed themselves as. Honestly that's one of the problems I've got with both sides, people want a fight instead of a discussion a lot of the time. Funnily enough, I'm sure if Katarina accepted your interview she would have received more sympathy even if we still disagreed with her. should clarify I understand why she didn't accept just saying that possibility existed. 20:08 hey that's me😁

The worst examples of Localization are from Funimation/Crunchyroll. Yet there are other examples from ADV/Sentai Filmworks, Bandai (back when they used to make English Dubs), Viz, Media Blasters (Anime Works and Kitty Media dubs) and of course 4Kids back in the day. Some examples are tame while others are annoying but not as off-putting compared to 2014 onwards.

He does it in such a way, where he focuses on twitch most of the time, and then upload the highlights of those videos to RU-vid and it’s a wonderful experience, and I think that your content would very much benefit from his style, even though your genres are very very different

Subs only for me. Dubs were great in the early days of Anime, but not in the last ~5-10 years. Ghost in the Shell was the pinnacle. The voice actors were incredible. And before the rise of Crunchy, a great deal of the early subs were either done professionally by the production, or by volunteers who really loved their work and weren't paid. Crunchy and other mass-market scaling of Anime has changed all of that. The distributors, like Crunchy, Amazon, Disney, and so forth... for the most part they don't want to pay actors more than a pittance to sub or dub and with the sheer number of series now coming to market the result has been catastrophic. Particularly for the dubs, but also the subs. What we are seeing now is this transition from volunteer to paid commercial effort, and commercial companies really doing a poor job dealing with it. So Dubs now seem to be mostly lackluster, with emotion never portrayed properly, the wrong words, too much PC, and complete rewrites when what I really want is the non-Westernized English equivalent for the Japanese. And Subs have also degraded massively, but not quite as badly. Subs at least, still allow me to listen to the Japanese (with my passing grade-school-level knowledge of the language), and more or less know where too much (non-)artistic license has been taken with the Sub. I think what we are seeing now is basically a rebellion. And I support it. Commercial interests like Crunchy and Disney have way, way too much power, and are way too greedy,. -Matt

They weren't - if you're thinking of the 4Kids dubs, yeah, they were made to make the stuff make sense for children's TV, so they do contain a lot of stuff that seems bad when you watch it now, but stuff like the Cowboy Bebop dub is still very well respected. It was a different industry back then where the dubs really considered the audience it was for and cast it and scripted it accordingly.

Well, what you'd probably have is like a generalized JP to EN translation AI which you can train on certain things about the series, helping it recognize and not translate things like names or setting specific words, teaching it about the characters so it knows how to refer to them and any dialog quirks to retain for them, etc.
