Dragoljub Minic vs Albin Planinc
"Planinc for Success" (game of the day Nov-16-2006)
Rovinj/Zagreb (1975), rd 11, May-??
Spanish Game: Morphy Defense. Archangelsk Variation (C78)
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O b5 6. Bb3 Bb7 7. d4 Nd4 8. Nd4 ed4 9. e5 Ne4 10. c3 d3 11. Qf3 Qe7 12. Nd2 O-O-O 13. Ne4 Qe5 14. Re1 f5 15. Qg3 Qe8 16. Nd6 Bd6 17. Re8 Rhe8 18. Bf4 d2 19. Rf1 Re1 20. Bd6 Rde8 21. f3 Bd5 22. Qf4 Bc4 23. h4 Rf1 24. Kh2 Re2 25. Bc7 Rff2 26. Qd6 Rg2 27. Kh3 Rh2 28. Kg3 Reg2 29. Kf4 Rh4 30. Kf5 Rh6
The opening in this game is the Archangelsk Variation which is one of the more aggressive, fighting variations against the Ruy Lopez. The variation was developed in the early sixties by players from the north Russian town of Archangelsk and was intensively analyzed by players from Lvov - among them Mikhalchishin and Beliavsky and in the mid to late seventies gained great popularity for the first time.
Black defines the position of this Queen's Bishop early on with 6...Bb7 in order to exert pressure against the opponent's center, in particular the point e4. White must decide whether he protects this pawn solidly with 7.d3 or goes for the unfathomable complications after 7.c3 Nxe4. Another option is 7.Re1 Bc5 8.c3 d6 9.d4 Bb6, which is closely related to the Moller System. In this game White chooses another option with 7.d4.
The game features bold, imaginative play and explodes when Planinc sacrifices his Q to create threats using his far advanced d-Pawn and when Minic went wrong it allowed Planinc a spectacular win.

Albin Planinc played a few crazy games like that. When I was first learning the game, I remember seeing one of his combo-bombo games, a KID with black, in 1973 or 74. It left me thinking "How much do these guys really see?"

This is one of those games where having a passed pawn draws so much attention it's like neutering a couple of the opponents pieces. It's surprising how often that happens actually.

@agadmator, in " Sorcery Series" one game that comes to mind that I think you should feature is the game between Kasparov and Kramnik in 1994 played in the tournament in Munich. This game shows Kasparov's sorcery powers of deep calculation and penchant for complicated positions. It's also a good game for you to feature since in this video you mention that no grandmaster would allow such moves and sacrifices and the "crazy" style of play. Enjoy. It truly is a brilliant game.

How can the black knight be pinned (PTV 5.25)? It can be manoeuvred to d6 to provide protection for the bishop at b7. The pawn at e5 cannot capture the knight at d6 because white can then bid adieu to it's queen. Moreover there is no white rook on e1 to offer a surprise check to the black king while capturing the knight at d6 with the pawn at e5!. (Later the knight can escape to c8 if needed.)
