I'm personally a big fan of Appendix Inside the Waistband Carry (AIWB), and even though I don't think it's for everybody, if you're serious about concealed carry, you should take a few minutes to understand the pros and cons, and how appendix carry can be done safely.

Reholstering in ANY carry position has the potential to become a negligent discharge if you're not careful. "Be careful when reholstering" is good advice for EVERYBODY.

If you honestly freak out about reholstering, the best part of AIWB is how easy it is to remove the entire holster and reholster off your person. Takes 1 second to lift a single clip.

The only time you need to be able to reholster quickly is in law enforcement. If you’re not a cop switching from handgun to cuffs or something else you don’t need to reholster until you have time to. If you’re a civilian you don’t take the gun out unless you’re going to shoot and if you do, you don’t reholster until the threat is gone and you have all the time in the world. If you’re just training there’s no threat and no reason not to put the gun away as safe as possible

You won't be re-holstering the firearm in a threat situation until the threat is GONE anyway.. so you have time to do it correctly. Slow is fast.

@jeff lockaby if the effect on you is INCREDIBLE and MASSIVE maybe you need to address that. I have been in deadly situations. It's not calm and serene, but it's not INCREDIBLE and MASSIVE either. You may shake, you may be incapable of System 2 thinking until you force it, but what you practice enough mechanically - that is still with you.

@jeff lockaby thousands of people appendix-carry every day and dont shoot themselves. Basic, diligent, gun safety will prevent that. If you're too worried about shooting yourself while carrying then YOU are too stupid to carry a gun. Leave it to the adults. Just because you're that stupid and don't trust yourself carrying a particular way doesn't mean everyone is. If something doesn't work for you then don't do it. But don't try and dictate to the rest of us that we are wrong because we don't do it your way.
@Loveoftheoutdoors

@jeff lockaby again, if you're too stupid to do it then don't do it. Arrogance is exactly what you're showing by telling thousands of others that you're smarter than all of them. Congrats dumbass, you win the Internet. There, does that make you feel better? Stupid, self-righteous prick...

It sounds so basic but your 'hard break' before holstering is a great idea. Even at the range, cleaning or any gun handling it would be a good, safe thing to do. Something so simple yet I never thought of it. Thanks for the tip.

Appendix carry is very disturbing, IMO. 1st is violates a basic firearm safety rule (you should know what it it) 2nd An accidental/neglectful discharge could effect your pro-creation plans in an extreme way. 3rd The sexual organs & femoral artery are being pointed at, very, very dangerous.
@sweetcostarica
@sweetcostarica 7 лет назад
Correct *in a sense* Tanin Moores and that answers the 1st point. BUT... Points: 2. An accidental/neglectful discharge could effect your pro-creation plans in an extreme way. 3. The sexual organs & femoral artery are being pointed at, very, very dangerous. You have not answered these other serious issues Tanin. Again, appendix carry is very disturbing.
@sweetcostarica
@sweetcostarica 7 лет назад
Tanin Moores I agree & disagree with the idiot comment. Here is why, accidental & negligent discharges: First - *Accidental discharges* happen without fault hence the name. Example: when something gets caught in the trigger while holstering like shirt material or debris from the area in fighting conditions. There are many things that can cause an AD like bad holster design or a faulty gun that quality control missed, etc. 2nd - *Negligent discharge* happen with fault. Examples are many: finger on the trigger, a Tex Gruber incident, using handguns with "hair triggers", not cleaning a guns firing chamber can cause an automatic ND, etc Also, under stress your body does unexpected things from adrenaline & the fast pace of the situation - a recipe for a negligent discharge. Important Note: Everyone is an idiot at one time or another. *Only an idiot would not agree.* We as compassionate human beings want to produce & sell safe product. This prevents idiot behavior from ruining your day. If you carry appendix sooner or latter, bang... no more babies. I see you still have not answered the question I put to you. I.e If: 2. An accidental/neglectful discharge could effect your pro-creation plans in an extreme way. 3. The sexual organs & femoral artery are being pointed at, very, very dangerous. How do you stop the above from happening 100% with a holster? There is an answer. I want to know if you are smart. Stay frosty.
@sweetcostarica
@sweetcostarica 7 лет назад
Three posts in a row? Calm down, calm down Tanin. The World is still turning. Sorry, *I did not mean to trigger you.* Like I said, "Everyone is an idiot at one time or another. Only an idiot would not agree." Tanin Moores how about this: I agree to disagree with you. Have a great day brother.

I started appendix carrying 17 years ago, mostly due to the fact that the state I lived in for 11yrs had some of the WORST gun laws in the country and concealing a gun that I carried 24/7 (for work and personal reasons) could be done MOST effectively in this manner. I’m 6ft tall and in very good shape, but to say it wasn’t really uncomfortable for the first 6 months would be completely untrue! What made it worse was that back then the only inexpensive holsters I could get for after work hours carry were Uncle Mikes, Blackhawk, and a very few custom leather holsters that were difficult to even buy through law enforcement channels. Now with kydex holsters and the abundance of companies that make them, appendix carry has unfortunately become “trendy,” and that turns a lot of people off to it.....but it’s a shame because it might actually prove a more effective way to carry for a lot more people. Great video by the way Lucky Gunner Ammo! The topic was very well represented and you covered quite a few points that naysayers really can’t logically refute! Look forward to more of your videos.

One thing some don't consider is that as people get older, they often have all kinds of shoulder problems. Tightness, impingements, old injuries, etc. That can make drawing from behind the hip or high on the hip, right at your side, very difficult if even possible, and sometimes very slow. So two of the most popular carries -- the two MOST popular carries? -- are simply not available to many. Maybe not for you, or maybe not for you for now, but maybe you later. And plenty of others now. Appendix carry is a solution that requires far less flexibility and a far less healthy shoulder girdle.

I use my regular Kydex holster specifically made for my compact M&P Shield 9mm. For me personally it's the most comfortable way to carry. Also the quickest draw. I do re-holster in a more deliberate, slower method. Instead of just re-holstering the gun back into the holster still on my appendix. I take my left hand and pull the holster out completely, then I slip the gun back into the holster and then finally slip the holster with gun securely and safely inside the holster (trigger covered) back IWB. This method does two things: it secures the gun in the holster safely And it forces you to slow down your re-holstering action. Since I don't carry with the safety on, this deliberate method adds that extra safety protection when re-holstering. Speed should never be a concern when re-holstering.

I have carried everyday for 39 years (25 year State Trooper SWAT/15 years Military) . I am also a Custom Holster maker (8 years). I have not found or constructed a Appendix Holster yet that is comfortable while sitting! Most of the unintentional discharges I have witnessed were during the draw, so if you carry without a round in the chamber or use a pistol with a manual safety, grip safety or striker control device the draw will be the most likely time you might shoot your junk! I do on occasion carry appendix (empty chamber--hold the flames...I Train drawing and chambering from AIWB).

I carry a Sig P320C AIWB with a trigger guard holster from Cooks Holsters. It's a low cost holster and you can not re-holster without actually reattaching the holster to the gun. Once it's reattached, you simply reinsert the weapon into your belt line and you're good to go. The trigger is shielded which reduces the risk of an accidental fire while re-holstering.Great video. Someone else said something about the information being clear and concise and I definitely have to agree.

@doghousedon1
@doghousedon1 5 лет назад
@@TruckPirate1 First off, everyone is built different so what works for me probably won't work for you. You will just have to try them till you find one that works. I have a box full of holsters that don't. So, what I have found is the Vedder "Light Tuck". And you will shoot me for this, a Uncle Mikes Number 5. For me, the UM-5 is the most comfortable, does a pretty good job minimizing printing (even when wearing just a t-shirt, and I can carry all day and forget I'm even carrying. Though it's not the best choice when crawling around under machinery. The Vedder does a great job minimizing printing even when using the 20 round mag (get the claw) and is almost as comfortable. I keep thinking of getting something smaller, but in 25 years and thousands of rounds that Beretta has never had one malfunction and that speaks volumes. Not to mention it's one damn accurate pistol. And if I can go all day not noticing it's there, why bother. A good holster is one that works for YOU and has nothing to do with how much you spend. 12 bucks for the UM-5 and it's what I use the most, 60 for that Vedder, and a box full of others I've spent up to a hunderd for, go figure. One final suggestion, get a pair of pants one or two inches bigger in the waist. Nothing is more uncomfortable than trying to pack inside the waistband with a tight pair of pants, you'll be singing suprano by the end of the day. Hope this helps, good luck finding something. [Edit] Just got a Langdon Tactical 92 Elite and am looking for an AIWB holster for it. Keepers, LM, and Werkz make holsters for that gun. But for now I using that ol UM5 till I finish doing my research on them. The Elite is easier to carry AIWB than the M9A3, not having that threaded barrel extension.

I think with a good holster (I use Vedder lighttuck love em) you can carry appendix with just abound any gun I can carry with cargos and a tank top considering I live in Florida with minimal printing. Just get the right holster man it’s worth it in the long run. Thanks for making this video to help people like me a few months ago

another positive is the safest way to reholster is to take the holster out of your pants and reholster the gun then put it back in, all is done easier from appendix since its easy to get to with both hands and its easily visiable. i carry a 4" 7 shot .357 revolver everyday at about 1:30 (depending on how my beltloops fall on my pants that day) its just a bit bigger than a 1911 in every direction, and its the best way for me to carry

I never understood apendix cary. If you do real labor instead of just standing around then you dont want a peice of non bendable metal in a spot that you need to bend. Makes work very hard.

If you bend at the hip rather than rounding the lower back, bending generally isn't a problem, plus it's better for your back that way. Obviously more compact guns are easier.

Real quickly you lean that carrying this way is inherently primal to protect and keep all your personal valuables all in one location. Do you mean 3 o’clock outside the waistband cause I find 3 o’clock inside the waistband uncomfortable as shit even with a subcompact. Can’t even move without the gun chaffing my waist and it also makes you look disproportional. Appendix was the most natural for me and most comfortable to get used to, especially after installing a claw and a FUPA/ WEDGE

Good points, and well presented. Regarding the re-holstering part, I never thought to lean back a little, good idea. And, a tip to other shooters: video yourself drawing and re-holstering and watch it in slow mo. Where is your trigger finger? Not only on the draw, but on the re-holster. I found I do a good job of keeping it off the trigger until I present the gun forward, but was unaware that my finger tip was dangerously close to the trigger when re-holstering. I could potentially catch my finger on the holster and fire a round accidently into a vital area when I slide the gun in. I have been diligently training to correct that, and make a conscious effort not to.

Like some other commenters, I too appendix carry a full size gun. There was some learning involved but it absolutely can be done. Just thought I would share my tips. First, invest in a quality holster. Cheap holsters are going to be either very uncomfortable, not durable, or they will print. I'm a big guy so I found holsters with a wedge and claw to be best for preventing printing. You will need to experiment with what works best for you. Second, when you sit down, you should hike your pants up a bit so the barrel of your gun does not dig into your thigh. Third, you will need to get used to it. Even with a good holster, it may feel awkward and uncomfortable at first when you are carrying. Keep wearing it and over time it will be more tolerable.

I tried appendix carry all day for the first time yesterday. I usually carry 4-5 o'clock, and I also find difficulty concealing even just a G43 since I wear fitting clothing and not 2 sizes too large. I have a Vedder Lighttuck. It's very easy to conceal being up front. Having a claw on the holster would make it completely invisible. Access to your weapon while seated was so easy. BUT, I was very sore on my thigh crease by the end of the day with all the bending over and getting out of the car multiple times. Perhaps I don't have the right set up. It's pretty nerve wracking knowing where the barrel is pointed. I'd rather have a grazed butt cheek over a blown up testicle/dick or possibly dead. Why hasn't someone come up with a bulletproof holster?

When he says that he doesn’t point the gun at his junk when reholstering I totally disagree. The gun has to go in straight into the holster and if that holster is pointing straight at your wobbly bits then you’re breaking one of the most important rules of firearms safety. Now every form of concealed carry except maybe ankle and shoulder carry breaks the rule of not pointing the gun at stuff you don’t wanna destroy I think people just have to get over that if they want to ccw. Also it’s not just reholster that’s dangerous. Draw your gun when sitting down and watch right where that muzzle passes. I’ll tell you where. The family jewels

I was always very resistant to AIWB because I didn't like the idea of the barrel of my gun pointing at my crotch/femoral artery. But After a dozen or so holsters for various styles of carry I am finally a convert to the AIWB way of thinking. It's one of the more comfortable ways to conceal carry. It doesn't print at all, and I dont have to worry about the back of my shirt riding up and revealing my gun. Also, when getting in and out of vehicles I've had other holsters, even under clothing, catch the seat belt or be an obstruction to securing the buckle. This is simply the best way to conceal a gun on your waist.

That’s pretty general. That could mean anywhere on the front half of your waist. It’s called appendix carry because you’re carrying it literally right over where your appendix is located, or I guess where it used to be if you’ve had it removed. It’s carried slightly right (assuming you’re right-handed) of the middle of your abdomen.

"A few years ago, a training school here in Illinois had an instructor development class. These instructors, all highly experienced trainers and shooters, had excellent gun handling skills. At the end of the day, they “gunned up” for a trip to a more gun-friendly state for dinner. As they did their thing preparing to go out for some grub, one of the females discharged her firearm as she holstered into her AIWB rig. As I recall, she was talking with another person when her gun fired. “Ah, [bleep]! I shot myself,” she uttered. The state-of-the-art hollow-point entered her leg at about the crease at the hip and traveled downward. These instructors knew more than just how to poke holes in paper. As a group, they had good medical training - indeed some were former military and had at least one tourniquet on her in less than half a minute. EMTs responded quickly from a nearby station and got her to an ER most riky-tik, pumping fluids into her during the ambulance ride. She went right into surgery and then spent a week or more in intensive care, having ruptured her femoral in three places. She was extremely lucky to have survived. My question to any appendix carrier (or anyone flirting with trying it): do you think you’re going to have some medically trained friends nearby to put a CAT tourniquet on you if you screw up your re-holstering? What if you’re out in the sticks at a range by yourself with spotty cellular service and little or no help available?"

You can end your life with a negligent discharge in any carry position. One thing that gets me in the gun debate and even those in the gun culture is how many people succumb to the illusion of safety, when in fact what they perceive as safe isn't any safer then what they perceive as too dangerous. I will agree that a moment of complacency can end terribly, that why you focus on what your doing and leave the chit chat for when the weapon is secured.

I love these appendix carry videos (sarcasm). First of all, most people talking about it are NOT carrying in the appendix position. The appendix is NOT on the front of your body. It's well off to the side, at the 1:30-2:00 position. And that's where you should appendix carry. And guess what. If you are actually carrying it in the proper position, it doesn't point toward your femoral artery, or anything else major for that matter. I've been appendix carrying for many years and If my gun were to go off while holstering the worst I'd get is a minor flesh wound on the outside of my leg. And I'm a big guy. Oh, and guess what. I use an ordinary leather IWB holster. Works great. This video, like so many others is a prime example of overthinking something that's really rather simple.

Useful tip for XD’s and any gun with a grip safety. Do a “thumb check” (ride the back of the slide with your thumb) just like he does in the video with a double action hammer. It’ll relieve the pressure of your palm on the back-strap and disengage the grip safety, giving you an added layer of safety if something snags your trigger during holstering.
