The Beau Brummels Laugh Laugh Live 1975

A Few Good Ideas

I am slipping this in because it has been in my queue for a long while. I am curious if it has staying power. This was taped single camera by me and Howard Lamden on a warm day in June of 1975 at Trod Nossel Studios in Wallingford, Connecticut for a live broadcast. There was a studio audience on the floor and I believe it went out live on WPLR 99.1 FM in New Haven. We were called in for free by Dick Kalt marketing executive at WPLR who a friend, Michael Smith, not sure but may have contacted. The Beau Brummels had re-formed in 1974 with the five member original line up. They had released a self titled studio album on Warner Brothers in April 1975 with original member Ron Meagher who left during production. On this tour appearance he was replaced by Daniel Levitt. I shot the main camera and Howard shot cutaways on another 1/2” reel to reel some of which may be in this edit. Audio was a feed from the mixing board and maybe mono on this tape. Laugh, Laugh, was from their first album written by Ron Elliott. We taped ten songs most of them from the 1975 album. Limitations of single camera and video audio glitches are evident.
You can support my efforts with a tip at Ko-fi: ko-fi.com/afewgoodideas
Sal Valentino - lead vocals, tambourine
Ron Elliott - lead guitar, backing vocals, occasional lead
John Declan Mulligan - rhythm guitar, harmonica, backing vocals, occasional lead (died 2021)
John Peterson - drums, occasional lead vocal (died 2007)
Daniel Levitt - banjo, guitar

The Beau Brummels were the 1st American Rock Group to transition to the British beat sound. Other groups found this quite challenging but no problem for the Beau Brummels. They found a way to not only fight back musically but stay in the forefront of American Rockers. This is their 1st hit song and it’s as though they were fighting fire 🧯 with fire 🔥 against the British Groups . Laugh Laugh 😆 😅😊is a great 👍 song and back in the late ⏰ 70’s I had this song 🎵 on a greatest hits Lp. The Beau Brummels were an American group that defined the 60’s. Fellas, if you all are still performing out there…Keep Rocking!!!

I saw this version of The Beau Brummells in a small club in Cleveland in 1975. I even have a rather crudely recorded tape of them from a cassette recorder I snuck in. They were absolutely wonderful. Besides many tracks from the reunion album on Warner Brothers, they played at least two other newer compositions that didn't make the LP, "Melody" and "It's Been a Lousy Day." By the way, as pointed out below, Declan Mulligan played bass on this tour. He was originally the BB's rhythm guitarist, but switched to bass when original bassist Ron Meagher dropped out of the reunion project.

I was nervous about hearing a 1975 version of this on a no-budget night. I was delighted. I'm also a fan of Levitt & McClure and I'm wondering if this band was playing the song "Paradise", co-written by Elliot and recorded by L&M.

It's a pity they didn't get more of a push from their record company. Every kid of a certain age knew Laugh, Laugh from the Flintstones if only we would've known they were a real band as opposed to the Beau Brummelstones, I think they would have done much better as those kids came of age?.

Things were so different then. The music biz had no corporate backers. Music was regional, San Francisco had their bands, LA had its bands. The musicians were realizing that the weekly race with other bands was an artificial bunch of hype. The Beau Brummels were in the “fancy pants” category with the Left Banke because of their clothes. The Kinks were getting out of that category after Dave’s sword fight in a bar. “Laugh, Laugh” was a strong song, somewhat sounding like it had been written by Gene Clarke of the Byrds… I am just now listening to their later songs, catching up…. It sounds like they are trying to confirm to something different than their original vision….
