My favourite "Trick" is Hybrid Picking. It makes it much easier to throw in "unexpected" notes. I hold the pick only with thumb and index finger and pick additionally with middle- and ringfinger. So for example, if I play a downward line and the pick is on the d-String, I can pick a note on the b-string with my middlefinger. Hybrid picking makes it easier to play larger intervals in fast tempo.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 2 года назад
Nice! You can get that to work dynamically as well?
@gereonH
@gereonH 2 года назад
@@JensLarsen Well, it takes a little practice, but it is possible to accentuate fingerpicked notes by pulling a bit harder, so they snap against the fingerboard. Maybe this is difficult with heavy strings, I use 11 The most difficult thing for my right hand is to change between the techniques like from sweeping to hybrid picking or a little palm muting at the bridge. But I get a lot more ways of articulation.

I read a book by Jerry Coker, I believe, where he advocates learning to play lines that move like this by taking a piece of paper and drawing a squiggle on it, and then trying to play melodies through the changes that fit the shape of that squiggle. Your "lawnmower bebop" would be a sine wave squiggle, in this system.

pivots definitely help keep the line interesting, also not always constant 8th, which seems to be a reoccurring thing..parker used so many different rhythms he played like a drummer, the accents etc. coming in on the ands of beats and ending in different places..funny after all these yrs I keep going back to bird and the bop legends

I have often searched for the patterns and ways to create that "sound" that doesn't sound like running scales and arpeggios. Jens, as soon as you flipped that first enclosure that lick stood out. My metronome is on 2 and 4 and I am creating licks all over the neck.It's super-rewarding to find a technique that you can apply so quickly with results.

This is great! Favorite bebop trick = Barry Harris half step stuff. Been working out lines for both Blues For Alice and Yardbird Suite - utilizing your teaching and it's been awesome, but i have a question. If I know im going to resolve a two five or a series of two fives on the 7th of the last five, how do I deal with the 3rd of that two ( in C, F being the third of Dm and the 7th of G7 for example)?

Thanks Jens, you keep giving us dense, useful information to play better! I'd like to ask you something: Is it just me or using the diatonic above chromatic below enclosures sounds better on minor triads? I kinda have the feeling it doesn't work that good on major triads.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen Год назад
Thanks! I actually don't agree with that, I think it sounds equally well on major triads, but I guess that is a question of taste as well?

For those following close to the tab on the "flipping Chromatic Enclosures" 2-5-1 lick, a couple of the fingerings are wrong and will have you shift your hand unnecessarily, On the downbeat of 4 in the second bar play the 12th fret on the G string instead of 8 on B string. On the downbeat of 2 on the final bar play the 12th fret on the D string instead of 7 on the G string. This keeps it all nice and compact. I just noticed Jens wasn't shifting and found that helped me.
