Behringer has recreated the legendary Arp2600 synthesizer. They named it the 2600 and it comes in a 19" rack format. In this video we give an overview of all the features, and build some patches to show you how it sounds.

I had an original 2600 in the 70s during my high school years. I traded in my Odyssey plus some cash to buy it. Spent $1600 for it back then, sold it for $700 in the 80s cus everyone was going Yamaha polyphonic. I can still kick myself for letting it go but mine seemed like it was in the shop more than I liked for various problems I can’t really remember. I couldn’t afford it anymore for that reason. Unless you have some knowledge of raw synthesis, I would recommend staying away from any synth that requires you to build your own sounds. I’m betting I could get right back into playing this beast and considering buying one once I see how reliable they are.

It is the winter of 2021. I've been playing synthesizer for 24 years. This is one of the recent models that have been tempting me in the last year, since it would provide a glimpse into a legend of my youth that is otherwise inaccessible. Vintage Synth Explorer's entry for the original 2600 stated that it's "not for the novice synthesist". Even 24 years and 2 ARP performance synthesizers (Axxe & Odyssey) later, the panel of this module is intimidating. That's just the normalized portion, forget using patch cords.

I have heard so many people slag Behringer off for what they are doing, people should just get a life!!! Mine came with no USB or NOT EVEN ONE patch chord (poor show Behringer! ) It's strength lies in patching, so if you buy it, order a usb/or midi lead to suit your setup, and a minimum of 5 45cm+ patch cables because it covers a fair distance to patch some sockets.

@gearjunkies
@gearjunkies 3 года назад
We have one connected to it, it works well. Take one of the gates out of the SQ-1 into the AR gate in on the 2600 (port 24 in the manual). It is normalled to the ADSR gate in, so it triggers both. And take a CV out of the SQ-1 into the multiple of the 2600, and from there patch three cables into the KYBD CV In each of the VCOs of the 2600, if you want to pitch track all three of them. Alternatively, use the other cv out and gate of the SQ-1 into one of the VCO cv in and into the ADSR gate in to have two separate sequences running.

I've made this observation before - but one of the key defining sounds of the original ARP was the interplay between the spring reverb tank, the body of the synth, and the internal speakers - which at louder volume would create a gentle feedback loop which gave a specific character to the synth - especially with percussive sounds, which on the original sounded like massive metallic hits that I've yet to hear accurately duplicated on this synth. You won't get it through a digital reverb, and that alone makes this not completely authentic in terms of a remake. To me, it's a nice 3VCO synth with lots of control, but it's not the caliber of the original. I will still be buying it, simply because I will never be able to afford spending 10K on an original model or even a Korg remake if I could find one. But functionally it's absolutely different, given no spring reverb and no internal speakers, and those really did color the sound in a way that is significant.

@gearjukies : Did you get any answer from Behringer about the External Clock that does not work against the Gates (sample and hold section) ? Thanks for the demo !
@gearjunkies
@gearjunkies 3 года назад
As it turns out, the symbols on the 2600 are in fact correct: they show that external clock only controls the S&H speed circuit. The switch and gates are only working with internal clock. This is the same as the original Arp circuit and also the same on the Korg version. However, the 2600 manual incorrectly states that an external clock can drive the switch. We also heard that original Arp 2600s were often modified to enable external clock to control the gates and switch. We have to hope for a mod to become public, as it seems that this is hardwired and therefore not solvable with a firmware update.
@KNHSynths
@KNHSynths 3 года назад
@@gearjunkies It's my fault, for once I read a documentation it has to be wrong :-) But the symbols on the B2600 face are not so clear too... I hope too there will be a mod, because when you use the synth, having the gates not in sync with the other parts and no way to sync it is a bit a shame. Thanks for your answer !
@emdotambient
@emdotambient 3 года назад
Nice demo, thanks! I really don't worry about it sounding different from the original because practically no one today can afford to buy and upkeep an old one. Korg's joke of a clone, again, was an expensive and rare beast seeing that it was a stupidly limited edition (if they do a mini version we'll re-evaluate the situation). The DIY version requires a significant amount of technical know-how, patience, and skill (plus it wasn't that cheap). At this price, it's a fricken steal. With all its features and its extensive patching options, the nice little additions, and a decent sounding digital spring reverb (if you need it to sound authentic then buy an outboard analog spring reverb and just run it through the thing!) ... well, I can't really think of any synths with all this for the same price. Behringer's Oddy is almost the same price as this and since when were the Oddy and 2600 about the same price? Never.

a friend has built the TTSH and it sounds great, but cost him upwards of £1500. hi there. I'm not sure how to google this question, so maybe you could help with understanding it. all of 3 oscillators has multiple wave-forms. And each wave-form can be sent separately via cv. My question is if I can send just one waveform at a time from single oscillator? or I can send 4 wave-forms independently from a single oscillator? I do really doubt it is technically possible to have this approach of sending 4 different waveforms form a single oscillator simultaneously on an analog device. But I may be wrong here, so if you could help me with understanding this part - this would help a lot, thanx in advance
@gearjunkies
@gearjunkies 3 года назад
VCO1 has 2 waveforms, VCO2 and 3 have 4. Each VCO can output multiple waveforms simultaneously, this is not uncommon in analog circuitry. For example the SEM famous 3340 VCO as found in many synths has 4 wave form outs on the chip. A SH-101 uses two of these that can be mixed freely, and the Behringer MS-101 has a triangle extra coming from the same chip, just because it was there already. But there is only one pitch per VCO of course. So in the 2600 you could use all 4 waveforms of for example VCO2 and patch them into the mixer section. It will be a bit boring soundwise as they will have the exact same pitch/modulation so no detuning possible.

Interesting box,not a 2600 but kinda a 2600... Simply another synth,which is just a tool,like a hammer to a carpenter... If you desire a real 2600 then you should buy a real 2600... Otherwise its a "poor carpenter" that blames his tools for not being like their co-workers tools if they buy a home depot hammer instead of the estwing hammer like the co-workers... Use the tools you have available to your best "craftsmanship" and dont expect your 8$ hammer to preform like the 30$ name brand hammer and then point out the problems are with the "machine"

its not about what hammer you use, its how you use it ;) at the end, its just a tool which you need to learn how to use...

I have it here. It doesn’t sound weak. The reverb is not great but the synth sounds fantastic.

@Lucas C who cares. In this video it did sound weaker than real deal but i think when you put it in the mix among other sounds no one would notice.
