I love the versatility and creativity that's involved in using a Total Gym or other sliding bench (like a Weider Ultimate Body Works, GR8FLEX). However, if you're looking to use a Total Gym or other sliding bench for the general purpose of shaping your body or to incorporate some resistance training, you don't have to do many exercises to get results. In fact I narrowed it down to 8! In this video I talk about what I believe are the best and or only exercises you'd need for muscle building / toning using a sliding bench. While there are tons of effective exercises, I've been thinking that there's really only a handful of exercises that I believe someone would have to do. Also that these exercises can work with all ability levels and ages. Certainly there's other exercises and activities that would be ideal to incorporate and add to an overall exercise program. Hopefully though this video helps simplify the machine and provide a basic framework to approaching its use.
Other Stuff I use and recommend.

I had a weider and the power bands really help for resistance. If you need more resistance get a adjustable stepper (the kind people use during aerobics classes) and put it under the front of the Weider. It will seriously increase the resistance and help to build muscle.

Nice video. I also like doing dips on it. Similar to ring dips but can do much higher reps and with control because of the angular advantage of the machine. I do not have dip attachment. I use the separate handles. A great bodyweight routine is chins, dips, squats and pushups. Their equivalent on the machine are great too

I find doing lying close grip cable dips to be a superior exercise (for me) for triceps development as the exercise also works the chest and anterior delts. The secret is to focus on working the triceps white lifting and lowering the cables in a controlled manner, pausing for an instant at both top and bottom of the exercise.

I just did what seemed natural and it was basically 4 of the 7 you mentioned. I have a really one looks like from 1990s. I think this is perfect for me. I was a runner/ hiker who didn't really work out besides pt and yoga strengths for back. Great videos, I watch them regularly. I'll use these ideas for my own workout routines! Its good to get back to the basics and these 8 exercises fit the bill. Would love to see a follow-up video to the muscles one where you explain what muscle groups are worked for different exercises. In particular, I'd be curious to know about the different positions and angles for the same exercise (such as bicep curls: seated, kneeling, lying, facing backwards, etc.) The Total Gym lets you do many exercises in several different positions angles. Are there any differences in the way muscles are worked based on the position or angle? Or are they all more or less the same and just a matter of personal preference/comfort, etc. Thanks!
@hybridresistance
@hybridresistance 3 года назад
Thank you for watching. I did link the video I did about what muscles are being worked in the description box. In the future I could do a more detailed one like you described, but I wouldn't worry too much about the specifics about certain angles. More important is just finding an exercise/angle that you "feel" more that particular day. I would say it is about a certain level of personal preference.

@jjjww975
@jjjww975 2 года назад
@@thomasconnolly8188 - if you are a beginner - try to do 1 set of 10 reps each ... for a week straight to where you notice that towards to the end ... that set is becoming easier. Then move to 2 Sets of 10 OR - 1 set of 15 reps. Small progression so you don't strain anything. During this build up of 3 Sets of 20 or 25 reps -- if your muscles are soar -- take like 3,000 MGs of Vit C for the condition. It' natural and it will help within days. The Total Gym is excellent to build strength and keep you toned! Also - take Magnesium ~300 mgs as well -- men need it - take it at night for sleep and it will aid in joint pain or even muscle pain. Take that daily at nite ! I do 1 set of 25 reps to stay toned ... plus a HIIT machine for endurance ... that's what works for my life style and stress !

Thank you...love (and do) all of these on a Total Trainer DLX, just another (and a good bit cheaper) than Chuck's version. There's a few more I would love to tell you about that I use alot and used when I trained as a personal trainer. One is the lying cable shoulder press. Lie down, head towards the bottom, like you are going to do the cable curls that you showed in this video (that, by the way, is THE best bicep exercise on this planet!). There is no pressure on the spine or body, everything isolates right into the biceps. It's superior to dumbbell curls. Anyway, take the cables from here and bring them into a shoulder press. It mimics the dumbbell shoulder press as you have to use stabilizers, unlike when you do the bar shoulder presses (that you show in this video). I like doing the bar shoulder presses, but it's just stuck in that one plane of motion. Doing them with cables is like an enhanced version of using dumbbells. And like with the curls, the spine is out of the equation with no pressure on the neck/back whatsoever. All the stress goes right into the shoulders. If you've never done them, try and let me know what you think. DC in Dallas, Georgia.
@hybridresistance
@hybridresistance 2 года назад
Thanks for this great comment and sorry I missed it awhile back. I have tried that shoulder exercise, but not as often just because (at least on a TG) I need more length in cables. I've done it with chains and when I have my extra clips/swivel in. But yes, that's a great exercise I don't do enough.

@darinwaynec Год назад
@@justinw1765 Believe it or not, I actually do a 2 or 3 second hold at the top! Chin ups are great on these things because you can't start "swinging" your torso to help out...lol. I also like to do a cable pull down move, with the your palms facing your body (neutral grip). It hits the back and biceps both. If your pretty strong, you'll need to add weight to make this one effective to hit your big back muscles. But I have two big ol 50 lb small bore dp plates that I've had since I was a kid. I throw them on there and you can wear your lats and bis out with this move! Give it try and let me know how it works for you.

Thank you so much for this video as well as your others, very helpful and informative. If I could ask your opinion, do you think the Total Gym Fit and/or the Gr8flex would be okay for someone 6’5? It looks like I may not be able to get full extension on bench press and maybe some other exercises. Also, I’m guessing full incline would be good for building muscle even for someone used to working with dumbbells (looking for something easier on the joints, etc)? Thanks again!

I get this question a lot and actually made a video on it (link in this comment) regarding these machines and being taller. In some ways it's really a personal preference, I've had people who are 6'4 and say that the machines work fine, but again everyone is built differently. I'd say the GF and FIT are so similar with dimensions that it's not much difference, but the cables are a little longer on GF so it does make make the bench press less likely to bottom out. I also check out my video on the swivel attachment. That with a couple carabiner clips will also aid in lengthening the machine out for you. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-emfpvtHhbLM.html

Hello just purchased a glide board and want to thank you for the excellent videos. You're filling a void for sure. In the past always focused on chest ignoring back...big mistake. Trying to build upper lats. Seems like the face-up pullovers are good especially one arm at a time focusing on the first quarter of the movement. I find it difficult to engage the lats unfortunately.
@hybridresistance
@hybridresistance 3 года назад
How do your lats feel with the regular pull ups on the machine? To me that's where I feel it the most, but pull overs as well are a close second.

@@hybridresistance Hey ... tried pullups on the Gr8flex gripping at the built-in oval. Used heavy resistance band looping in a figure 8 around my waist and leg stand. Not sore at first but it slowly developed over a few days all over back especially between shoulder blades. Typically, don't feel my back in pullups probably use arms and shoulders or some other muscles but the Gr8flex seems to provide more back isolation. Also, super-setted with one-leg squats with resistance bands while the pulley was disconnected really got heart rate up. Good exercise combo. Tried "iron cross" afterward and that felt pretty good too. Thanks for all the tips hope you're well.

Have you tried laying on your chest with your head facing down and working your hams with one foot hooked in the strap? I find leg day is more fun using the straps in different positions.
@hybridresistance

I've do have the two feet strapped in, but never tried one strap connected to both feet if that's what you mean. I just featured in my newest "new exercise" video a seated facing tower/ or face up hamstring curl strapped in that feels really good as well.

Do you have recommendations on where to start as far as reps and then how to build on that?
@hybridresistance
@hybridresistance 3 года назад
I always recommend going off of "feeling" on reps. By that I mean choose a rep range that allows you get a decent amount of work per set, but not really to failure. Naturally as you progress or get stronger you'll be able do more reps / sets. But usually I'd say for most people it's somewhere between 10-20 reps. Personally, I never once counted reps on any set unless it was for a video/workout.

Hey Bud, great informative video. I would change one thing though, and it's depending on if you have the attachment for the Total Gym Fit. It's dips. Personally for me, when I'm at the gym or using the Total Gym Fit to train arms, and more specifically triceps, I warm up with tricep press downs first, to warm up my elbows. Then I'd go right into dips. I love the dip handle attachments for the Total Gym Fit. Those two tricep exercises really get the blood flowing into my triceps. I do love the lying bicep curl towards the end of your video, I great a great biceps pump on that exercise. Great video! Thank you! - Mike

I did comment on the dip bars when I recently reviewed my GR8FLEX machine, but honestly I didn't like them as much. I know a lot of people do, I personally get more out of the other tricep exercises. Thank you for watching.

I bought a used Total Gym 1700 last summer, then lost it and everything else except my pajamas and dog in a house fire. So my budget while I recover from that is razor thin. I can get an OG Total Gym in good condition for $25, which is in my price range. Can all these exercises be done in this particular Total Gym?

All solid exercises, I don't claim any machine, mode, or exercise is superior for all people. Problem with those is that for many people (obese, back issues, shoulder issues, etc) they would be a struggle. Just had an ex wrestler start using this and told me this is the only way he can do a pull up

I have the Total Gym XLS. It slides to much doesn't stay in place. I have tile floors in this room.I have a mat I got from Wal-Mart. Maybe that's the issue or I'm doing my work out wrong. I can't find the mats on the Total Gym Vidoes. Maybe I should just get some carpet.
@hybridresistance
@hybridresistance 2 года назад
You could check out these stall mats amzn.to/3fPzTcQ you can also find them at Farm and Fleet type stores and possibly larger hardware stores. They shouldn't move too much on this surface. I don't think you're doing anything wrong, probably just the tile floor. Carpet would also work, although I've had people tell me it slides on carpet. I think it just depends on the type of carpet.

Learned a lot by watching your videos; chains, weight bar for stability & the Large Squat Stand (a leg press, not a squat). I do have an issue with using the Wing attachment for pull-ups & shoulder presses. I felt a lower back pain because the handles were not in line with my body (similar to arching your back using free weights). My solution; the Tri-Grip Shaper Bar. The pain is gone.

Yes, the way you sit can be another modifier for increasing / decreasing tension. I sometimes will sit with my feet on the ground, but it just depends how much you're using the ground to assist you with the movement.

Why does inverted shoulder press hurt my neck, I keep my head neutral
@hybridresistance
@hybridresistance Год назад
Could just be that your still driving force / tension through your neck. A lot of muscles still have to work together to produce this exercise. I would experiment with wider grips, making sure you're pressing through your ears, lower the incline / speed.
