BBQ Pulled Pork | Oven cooked
How to cook perfect BBQ Pulled Pork in the oven.
This recipe is delicious cooked low and slow
What will you need?
1.5kg Skinless Pork Shoulder
Dry Rub -
LIQUID SMOKE ( check internet )
4 tsp of SMOKED Paprika
1 tsp Mustard Powder
1 tsp Chilli Powder
1 tsp Ground Cumin
2 tsp Garlic Powder
1 tsp Black Pepper
1 tsp Salt
2 tbls Brown Sugar
For the BBQ Sauce -
1 tbls Dark Treacle
1 Bottle of good quality Tomato Ketchup
4 tbls Worcestershire Sauce
Chipotle Tabasco Sauce
2 tsp English Mustard
2 Oranges
4 tbls Apple Juice
4 tbls Apple Cider Vinegar
Bourbon ( Jack Daniels )

If using a pre-made BBQ sauce (e.g. Heinz Classic BBQ) can you still use that for the basting of the meat?

When it comes to food pal, there is no right or wrong for each person. A store bought sauce will absolutely work mate. If you are using a ketchup style sauce like Heinz table bbq sauce. This will work but I would advise only basting it for the last 30 mins or the sugars will burn in the sauce and taste horrible. Give it a go mate and let me know how it turns out👍

I tried this over the weekend and it was amazing. I changed the Bourbon for plain old Jack Daniels which I assume is fine to do. Phil Vickery does a good take on this recipe - he uses apple juice in the bottom of the roasting tray which keeps the meat really moist too.

Onion powder or granules if you can is a must in any pork rub for me. And that bbq sauce looks amazing

Ok, I made this again today (including the BBQ sauce) and it was absolutely superb. The BBQ sauce was better than anything out of a bottle by a mile. Superb recipe!

Yea it’s coming at some point mate, I’m trying to do them in between work. I’m working 50+ hours a week at the min, I work in retail so you can imagine with another lock down I’m not getting much time to my self lol. I’m on annual leave for a week next week so will deffo be making it then

Great recipe. I usually smoke my boston butt, but the weather doesn't look like it will cooperate. This is a great recipe for me to try this year. Happy Thanksgiviing.

Tried this recipe yesterday. Rub was very good. Followed instructionsto a tee (water in pan, basting) and it turned out kind of dry still. Drizzled some of the juices over to moisten and it was quite good for oven made pulled pork. The sauce was sharp and a little acidic for me, but homemade is ALWAYS better than bottle. Any idea where I went wrong with the lack of tenderness? I cooked it for 6 hours at 178

I think you did fahrenheit instead of celsuis? Maybe to low temp or your inner temp was not high enough

Quick question - how do you know how long it will take to cook as I imagine this is different to calculating cooking times for a roast? I notice the video said 5-6 hours but the joint used took the full 6. How did you know it wasn't ready at 5 hours? I'm thinking of buying a 2kg joint and was trying to work out how ling I should cook it for.

Hi Ross, what I did was give it 5 hours and then get 2 forks and try to pull it. If it pulls apart easily it’s done. TBH it’s virtually impossible to over cook it when low and slow it will just dry out. I would start with 4 hours and then try the pull method every hour after until it pulls apart easily. Some ovens vary in temp so there is no PERFECT time. Hope you enjoy it mate and thanks for watching 👍

Actually thought about this at the time but got side tracked, that’s an amazing idea and I plan on making one soon. I’m stuck in Asian cooking mode at the min lol.

@@Cookingforthemissus Haha - so I've noticed. I don't like Chinese food so have been waiting for the recipes to change again. Did the Piri Piri Chicken the other week which was absolutely superb but wasn't struck on the donner kebab recipe in the slow cooker - texture was a little funny (almost like meatloaf) and not a lot of flavour.

That’s a shame, the kebab is my favourite , sorry you didn’t enjoy it. My next video I’m thinking of brisket or smoked/bbq flavoured ribs, I’m trying to make a verity of recipes so I will keep you in mind on my next video👍

Whenever I cook the pork shoulder in the oven for this long it comes out very dry. Any fix for this? I wrap it in tin foil on a raised rack with water underneath

In a spray bottle add 1/2 cup apple juice and 1/2 cup water. Give it a good shake. Give the pork shoulder a good spray every hour. You could also try preparing this in a crock pot/slow cooker instead of in an oven.

To get rid of the fat was a mistake in my opinion. Getting it cut off in one piece is a idea I am stealing, but after I put on the rub on I am going to tie the fat back because it helps make it tender and juicy.

Whoa, that teaspoon is a regular teaspoon but not an actual measuring teaspoon and those measurements are huge heaping teaspoons...might as well use a shovel.
