It’s rather simple, block off EGR and install a catch can you get a clean motor, the PCV and EGR recirculate contaminates being oil vapour and exhaust gas, modern day cars with direct injection experience more carbon and crud buildup because the direct injection doesn’t spray fuel past the valves like a carby or port injection, there is nothing to clean them therefore it builds up.. To the people in the comments that have removed their catch can and think their car runs better, it probably does but this is likely from poor maintenance, a blocked PCV or catch can will make the car run poorly because it can’t ventilate the excess pressure, it will also cause oil leaks because the crankcase is pressurised.

Hi mate, thanks for the explanation and providing the right information without messing around. I have a Gu patrol and installed a catch can 40k ago and since I installed I could see that more pressure was added to the valve cover and some oil started to come out from the injectors sealing. I just removed the Catch can and see how it goes now. I am also planning to install n the coming days the plate with 7mm opening to restrict the recirculation exhaust gasses through the EGR. Once again thanks for sharing sash a valuable information.

You raise a good point about diesel motors maybe not needing one, but on gas engines they are helpful. Many new gas engines don't even have an EGR so the oil vapour comes from the rocker cover and just goes into the throttle body and coats the valves.

I got such a catch can, Provent 200, installed on my 2005 Freelander TD4, with the BMW M47 engine. It seems to work very good, intake of the can is wet and got carbon chunks, output is bone dry. In my opinion top pros are dry intercooler, which makes it more efficient, since oil is reducing its cooling effect, dry deposits on the intake, the less oil, the less deposits. As on the exhaust manifold, a thin layer of carbon that doesn’t thicken. The cons are mostly related to wrong installation. On the other hand you pointed out very good that the oil that gets past the catch can continues to grow deposits. But this is related to the efficiency of the filter inside the can. Lastly, about the abrasive particles from the EGR I don’t think the intake valves nor their seats will suffer damage, as there is no damage on the exhaust valves anyway, which, guess, they are always in contact with those particles. Anyway thank you for the video and I hope you respond with your opinion about my arguments

I own that same engine on my 320d e46 and I was wondering about buying one of those catch can and leave the EGR working. But many things I found about people installing these catch cans is that the seals of the engine gets damaged earlier because of the restriction you add with the catch can and this pressure been released through the seals. If you can give me an opinion about that it would be great. Thanks in advance. Cheers.
@gheorghinacov6008
@gheorghinacov6008 5 месяцев назад
@@Adrian-re9fh Thank you for your question! Provent 200 causes little to no restriction as its flow goes up to 200 litres of blow by per minute. Any damage that appears after the catch can installation can only be the cause of a wrong installation or not servicing it. Servicing means draining it whenever drain tube gets full of oil and changing the filter after it gets completely soaked up in oil (perhaps after 25000-30000 km). I’ve had the catch can on my car for 10000 km at least and caught about 200-250 ml of oil ever since

catchcan is useless. delete the stupid egr to get rid of soot. the crankcase vent system lubricates the intake valves and turbo. I’ve used this catchcan on my mercedes sprinter v6 and nothing but problems and noxious fumes from it. That filter is another maintenance item that gets trashed quick and is expensive. Plus you loose some energy content for combustion that are wasted via blow by that would be burned otherwise and provide more complete burn off of all emissions. With can catch can you’re mostly burning the light vapor fumes and the heavy oil drops out. The moisture won’t be an issue because it has oil mixed in and won’t cause corrosion on ferrous components. The bigger the crankcase vent hose is to the turbo, the less crankcase pressure and less drag as well as crankcase gases will be reduced which at first glance seems counter intuitive. Emission is just an automotive engineering hypocrisy exercise. There are no solutions for emissions, only trade offs. Making cats and dpfs creates pollution at the factories that make them and mining companies that mine them. It’s not lower emissions just more hidden emissions. The electric car supply chain is even worse with all the copper heavy manufacturing. The green movement is definitely doing the opposite while virtue signaling. More money more money more money is all they want while lying through their teeth. A deleted truck is the greenest when properly tuned. A lot of extra parts will disappear and yes, less pollution because of less manufacturing. Our world is so backwards

@derichhofmann4667
@derichhofmann4667 7 месяцев назад
Why don’t manufacturers include them? lol because they don’t give a F&@% about the long term (past warranty) condition of your engine nor your long term maintenance/repair costs, nor your long term efficiency. And they don’t trust the average owner to empty the can even if they (the manufacturer) wanted to spend the extra $ on the device. They want to keep selling vehicles, it’s all about planned obsolescence. Look how much cheap plastic and low quality metal is used in new vehicles. Look how difficult it is to service anything in the engine compartment, the designs favor the dealerships, the mechanics; and the parts suppliers. As consumers we are just the trees that grow the money for the industry.

a catch can is good for some cars and not for others, On cars that do NOT need a catch can, have the Crankcase ventilation pipe going straight to the inlet manifold therefore avoiding all the rest of the intake system.. Cars that need or could benefit from a catch can are the ones that have the crankcase ventilation pipe going straight to the air inlet pipe which then travels through the intake, the turbo, the intercooler and the intake manifold including all piping. The ones that go straight to the intake manifold are basically cleaned because they are so close to the injectors.

Remember the days when crankcase gasses was expelled onto the road and not through the air intake? I don't think engines wore out quicker if regular oil changes were followed. In fact I think most engine problems started when the emission laws required the crankcase gasses to be burnt off through the combustion process.

It's about contaminants being put into your very finely metered air-fuel ratio to give the cleanest most efficient combustion in the combustion chamber. Then you add all that soot and dirty gooie air to increase the carbon in the combustion chamber that goes into the crankcase causing premature wear on all moving parts as well as less HP because of poor combustion in the combustion chamber compounding it with each cycle having some kind of collection system to prevent this must be an overall improvement. But venting directly into the atmosphere or reburning the same contaminants doesn't seem to make sense. It just seems to create more carbon build-up lowering the longevity of the engine

Do not use any catch cans. What people NEED to do is learn how to measure the crankcase pressure. Its funny they know how to check tire pressure, fuel pressure, boost pressure, coolant pressure, oil pressure, transmission pressure, etc... but nobody is measuring the crankcase pressure. High crankcase pressure causes pressure scalar gradient forcing oil out of the engine and into oil seals including piston rings. I have a DIY Video in my channel how to measure crankcase pressure using 1-bar map sensor and 5-volt source so you can check your engine and adjust as needed. Little bit of thinking to do on the deposits and features of deposits. Blow-by is essentially exhaust and it mixes with some oil if there is oil drawn along with it. High crankcase pressure causes large oil droplets and high oil droplet density to form. It takes energy to drive fluids through hoses and hoses add friction so the PCV system should have short as possible hoses with small enough diameter to enable high velocity high temperature fluids to return to whence they came. Think about that for a minute- The combustion process occurs and some slips out into the crankcase, if we could return it to the cylinder instantly it would not leave any deposits and will not interact with engine oil. Think. Carefully. Imagine the blow-by gas leaving the combustion chamber working its way down through the rings or into the exhaust and being sucked up and returned to the cylinder where it was a moment ago. No harm done. The harm is when the blow-by gas is allowed to cool down, condense, slow down, due to insufficient energy supplied via PCV action (pressure below atmospheric to drive fluid evacuation). This is why we measure the crankcase pressure and design the PCV system and engine modifications to rapidly evacuate the blow-by and return to the cylinder immediately. Do not allow blow-by to circulate into engine oil where it will leave deposits and cause eventual wear and failure.

A manufacturer fitted catch can might be an expense cost to the manufacturer I don't know .

They would if people remember to empty them every 5000km but that won't always be the case

If manufacturers cared for your wallet they wouldn’t run exhaust gases back through your intake👍🏻

So I recently removed a catch can, installed at 200k and removed at 350k on a 2010 Prado. So what they don’t tell you, is that the filter in catch can needs to be changed. It’s actually hard to remember or for the mechanic to remember to empty the catch can. Which means it was probably doing more harm than good. After removing it, less smoky exhaust and I swear the car drives smoother and is more responsive. Save your money and install an arb on-board compressor. Much more usefulz

That’s ridiculous! You basically said you are lazy. Of course it’s not going to work if you can’t be bothered maintaining it! Don’t give people bad advice!

So you only change your engine oil filter because someone told you to do it? Of course the filter in the catch can needs to be changed.. any filter in any application will need to be changed at some point… you literally just described having a blocked catch can from poor maintenance.. the car drove smoother and was more responsive because you allowed the engine to breathe again, you are allowing it to ventilate the pressure which will free up a few horse power..
