World's Greatest Sporting Legend - Cricket Ep Part 3
Presented by Des Lynam and the now, sadly, late Sir David Frost
Back in the spring of 2005, the good people at Sky TV come up with the winning concept of broadcasting 10 one-off tv shows with the purpose of allow membersof the public to vote for the greatset ever sporting legends in their particular sport.
Each show focused on one sport .g. soccer, tennis, golf etc. On the show would be 4 expert judges who would have whittle down the prospective legend to 10 individuals for the public to vote for their favourite.
So here is the episode which was attempting to find the greatset cricketing legend.
Enjoy!

Well done Geoffrey Boycott for mentioning SF Barnes. Nobody has ever heard of him as he played in the early 1900s but he was an unbelievably good bowler.

Right, he should be in all-time XI. Best bowler before world war 2. Not just tremendous test average, but destroyed the West Indies when playing for Wales in his mid 50s.
@douglasporter3865
@douglasporter3865 7 лет назад
Yes, Barnes took an average of 7 wickets per Test - far faster than even Shane Warne; faster even than Muralitharan and with not so much as a breath of suspicion over his bowling action. Had Barnes been able to keep taking them through a career spanning 145 Tests he'd have had over 1000. Remarkably for an international, he played hardly any county cricket. He spent a lot of his cricketing life as a Lancashire League professional in which his bowling average was something insane like 10, and it was not unknown for opposing sides to have the next *four* batsmen padded up ready when Barnes was bowling. All without sledging, short stuff, or any intimidation other than the very real threat of being bowled out no matter who you were or what shot you played.

Dear Mr. Merv Hughes, Thank you very much for defending Murali. I am from Sri Lanka. One of the moderators asked - wasn't he (Murali) dubious ? (haha) or something similar to it. Obviously he has ignored the research work done on this matter. It is OK to pick WG (who was an egoistic idiot and/or a cheat - both are not in the spirit of sportsmanship), but not Murali ! So I thank you for nominating and defending Murali. If I remember correct, research was done with other bowlers at that time too and they (researchers) found out that a large number of fast bowlers who were operating then were straightening the bowling arm and that is why they had to come up with an allowance of 15 degrees. Otherwise a lot of top class fast bowlers of that era were going to get banned. In Murali's case if I remember correct, they said that it was only "an optical illusion". I am 60 and have seen most of these players except Don. I don't know who was picked, but my legend is Sobers (and Viv very close no 2, sorry Don).
@SilentHotdog28
@SilentHotdog28 4 года назад
I used to hate how Murali was allowed to play until I researched about him, he is a legend of the game, but he was born with an unfair advantage (I'm not saying he's cheating or doing anything unsportsman like, don't get me wrong) but the way his arm is, does allow for an advantage when bowling along with the optical illusion that he creates when bowling. He is a deadly bowler, but he shouldn't have been banned from the game. Especially since he is able to bowl a Doosra where most offspin bowlers are unable to. www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/cricket/article-2847962/Tests-prove-never-chucker-says-Sri-Lankan-spin-wizard-Muttiah-Muralitharan.html His arm at its straightest is at 27 degrees. Also Bradman is the greatest by far, that is my opinion and that of many others.

Dude, murali is an absolute legend. It’s a shame anyone would question his action or what he brought to the cricket world ( not just Sri Lanka). I liked Anil Kumble a lot more since I’m Indian... but Murali is absolutely the best spinner the worlds produced

A very fair point by Mr. Merve Hughes about where they are hosting this program and who is voting influencing who is being picked in the list. As Merve said if they held this program in Sri Lanka they would have not picked Sir Jeffery Boycott !

XI: Hobbs, Tendulkar, Bradman, Richards, Lara, Sobers, Sangakkara, Imran, Marshall, Warne, Barnes + Gavaskar, Grace, Hammond, Pollock, Ponting, Javed, Weekes, Kallis, Gilchrist, Botham, Miller, Hadlee, Wasim, Trueman, Lillee, McGrath, Muralitharan... top 3: Bradman, Tendulkar, Sobers
@mizofan
@mizofan 6 лет назад
yes, it was between Sangakkara and Gilchrist and now I'll go for Sangakkara, though there is already a tremendous batting line up (as you have with Miller at 8, Imran at 9). I could also have Muralitharan instead of Warne but only 1 Australian wouldn't fit their great history.

This is the kind of debate I love. This panel (and presumably a lot of the audience) seem to understand what a legend really is. It drives me mad how the term is abused. To be a legend you have to transcend your sport (even in some truly exceptional cases sport itself). A legend isn’t just a great, he or she is an ALL TIME great.

So, who won? Anyways, my choice as the greatest all round cricketer; bowler, batsman, captain and the greatest LEADER of any team in my lifetime, would be IMRAN KHAN. Although I'm from India and despite the fact than India-Pakistan rivalry on and off the field is something than anybody from outside the subcontinent cannot even COMPREHEND- Imran Khan commanded so much love, adulation and respect in India that even very few Indian cricketers ever did. Jackson, Mississippi.

was a wanker.....Haha jokes, He was a really good player, but his batting average was.....well average.......even for an All-Rounder it was nothing special......Now his wicket taking ability was great, 431 wickets from 86 tests at an average of 22 is amazing, seriously phenomenal stuff, but to be a great all rounder we'd have to look at someone more rounded, with a higher batting average even if they have less wickets/ higher bowling average. Garfield Sobers and Ian Botham are the area to look at. While hadlee only had 2 test centuries, Botham had 14 at an average of 33, with 383 wickets at an average of 28. Sobers had 26 centuries at an average of 57 with 235 wickets at an average of 34. all these players between 85- 105 tests, so similar ball park.

@SilentHotdog28
@SilentHotdog28 4 года назад
khan scored 4200~ runs less than Sobers and his batting average was 20 less. but Khan took 130~ more wickets and his average was 22 whereas Sobers was 34, so Khan was a slightly better bowler and also more efficient, Sobers played only 5 more test so it's not like there is a big difference, Sobers is the more rounded of the 2 though and was more consistent, also Sobers was able to bowl pace and spin. I'd rather have 4200~ more runs than 130~ more wickets.

Richard Hadlee and Imran Khan are by far better allrounders than Ian Botham who I thought yes was great but was grossly over rated.Not a very good record against the mighty west-indies of that era.My pick for greatest all rounder is Sir Garfield Sobers and coming in at second is J.Kallis.Brian Lara was the greatest batsman.
@rocky49able
@rocky49able 4 года назад
Picking WG Grace was a no-brainer. He averaged just around 32 in 22 tests. This contest was for picking international cricket greats. WG might have been the greatest English cricketer based on his first-class record, but not international cricket. I would replace WG with someone like Michael Holding or Malcolm Marshall, two hostile fast bowlers who took wickets in all conditions.

I would say Bradman then Daylight, Sobers and Gilchrist....a bit of a gap then Jacques Kallis.....then daylight....then the herd. Gilchrist is the greatest Wicket Keeper of all time with 2.178 dismissals per innings in tests and 1.6 per Odi innings which is the best in both, but also had a batting average of 47 in tests and 35 in odi......which is great for a batsman, but for a wicket keeper is phenomenal. He could be picked as a pure keeper or pure batsman.
