In this episode Mike Salemi, of Kettlebell Lifestyle, shares with Justin Andrews of Mind Pump the difference in kettlebell swing techniques: Straight Arms vs Bent Arms swings.
Key talking points and takeaways:
- Arms are just whips
- No pulling from the arms
- Leg driven movement
- More vertical movements help guide the trajectory of the kettlebell
- Maintain good back and shoulder girdle alignment
- Slight bend can keep the chest more open and align the shoulders
- As the bell is lowering that's where the arms can be slightly bent
- ONLY when the arms lose contact with the body should you bend your arms
- NOT a bicep exercise

Straight arm vs. slightly bent arm is not covered enough in kettlebell instructions. Thank you for this tutorial! Glad to know either is acceptable and even useful.

Love the KB explanations! I’m fairly new to it and each video has really helped me focus on what needs to be right to make each exercise both safe and effective.

Salemis' swing is beautiful to behold, but a better cue is to swing as if you're holding a piece of paper under each arm pit. It's an instant fix.

bent arm helped me rehab my shoulder injury. When it got more stable I was able to keep the arm straight

Apart from the cardio effect an exercise like this gives you I cannot see any other benefits??? and surely the back must be under terrific stress from this type of motion and the amount of weight being used?

golfinguna Nothing to do with the back, the power is in the snap of the hips - as I see it. If your back is stressed then I’d say something is not being done correctly. I’m a 75 year old woman, and have been swinging the bells for many years now.

You should work with your glutes. So only part here that is stressed are legs and hips. If your back hurts afterwards then either you have to go and see a specialist and/ or hire professional to help you get the right posture during swing. Posture here is everything... And about what benefits ::core of your body. Back and legs.

golfinguna, there should be very little stress on the back - but if you bend down too much like as though you're picking something up from the floor - then yes there will be back issues. Hinge at the hips, don't become parallel to the ground, keep back vertical when at the standing position - don't arch your back - and then back problems are nonexistent or minimised.
