You should check out the sigma 16mm 1.4 - new and made for m43 so no need for a speed booster!

Hey mate great video. I have the Panasonic G9 and the sigma 18-35 F1.8 I have been thinking about getting the metabones speed booster. How does the autofocus perform with the metabones on?

I have both the 12-35 2.8 and the sigma 18-35 1.8. I totally agree with you the sigma is so heavy! 😭 I don't know what to since I'm going to travel the world for one year . Leave the sigma behind or taking both with me.

how do you think about buying a sigma 18-35 for travel ? i think it would be really hard to carry continuously during long travel.

Hey Ryan - thanks for the vid! Trying to figure out whether we can use the newer Metabones XL (.64x) on the GH5 and the Sigma 18-35 EF lens. Seems strange that the newer GH5 would have to use an older version of the Metabones adapter? Any thoughts?

Lifestreams Media , I have both Metabones XL .64 and S18-35. The combo works with GH5 perfectly!

I really want that lense combo but for me to do that i have to give up my 12-35 panasonic f2.8. The only reason im hesitant is because of how amazing the lense stabilization is on the 12-35. It is crazy good on my opinion and greatly reduces my need for a stabilizer. #torn

Hello fellow North Carolinian! Great video on helping me decide on lens choice. I was knida leaning towards the Leica 12-60mm as a stay on lens because of the range, sharpness and added stabilization (coupled with the body).... but I'd trade all that if the Sigma lens does at least a decient job with one of the popular autofocus hacks that have been popping up lately. I'm not expecting Canon dual pixel performance. Even if it's just a lil bit workin' I'll do the Sigma instead... Lol. Just wanted to know if you've tried the autofocus workarounds and how they work with the Sigma. Thanks!

Hi Ryan is there a significant differance in handheld stabilization between gh5 + native 12-35 vs gh5 + sigma 18-35 ??? Stabilization is very important factor for me cos I dont like gimbals and mostly shoot handheld. I would love to have sigma but wondering if I still will have smooth and steady shoot like now with my gh5 + native 12-35???

Have you heard of Veydra Cine lenses? I'm thinking of buying one for my GH5s. They seem like a very good choice, and are made for micro 4/3. (They're a bit pricey for beginners and some intermediate users tho)

Thomas Dejaegher it depends on your shooting style. I find primes very limiting when I’m trying to quickly setup and tear down. Using high quality zooms that give the performance of primes help me out a lot. If you can deal w changing lenses more frequently those are indeed a great choice.

I currently have the mitakon 25 mm .95. I am torn between getting the Voigtlander 17.5 so I can have a 35 mm equivalent at .95 or get this lens which gives me the same range as the 17.5 but a little less light. I often need to shoot in dark places. Can someone advise me as to the real difference between.95 and 1.2 with a speed booster? Is it worth getting the prime or the zoom more for those extreme low light situations?

1.2 is really bright when compared to other lenses. I also find 1.2 to often be too shallow for my tastes. 90% of the time I use this lens I am at 1.8. If you have the budget this is the more flexible option.

check out the olympus 12-40, very similar to the lumix 12-35 as it has a constant 2.8, but it has normal manual focus rings, not focus by wire

I enjoy taking photos with this lens too. Just know its not going to be as snappy as a native lens. AF will be slower and it is quite heavy. If you can deal with that the DOF is really nice. Very nice lens to carry around.

So. Im a noob and im thinking about getting a gh5 but im looking for a some what budget friendly all around lense for micro 4/3. I don't want to spend too much money as im not 100% sure if im going to stick with this hobby. I want to find a single lense that I could shoot an entire music video with for a friend's local band to start out with. Does anybody have any good advice/ can point me in the right direction please?

Thanks for the great review. I just left sony and got the GH5. I ordered the 12-35 2.8 v2 with the camera and have been using it for a week. I am torn between sending the back the 12-35 and getting the Sigma 18-35. If you had to have only one lens which one would you take? I am using it for mainly video (maybe some stills from time to time).

if i ONLY had to have one lens I would take the Sigma. I really like the 12-35 for travel stuff. The convenience of a small, native lens is hard to beat. plus the Dual IS is a treat. I often pair the 12-35 with a gimbal and use the Sigma for all handheld and shallow DOF work.

Ryan Timms so the best of both worlds would be one native and then the sigma? So torn ... lol 😂. But I also have the original Zhiyun Crane and if I get the sigma then that would mean I can’t use the gimbal ... hmmmm

yeah wouldnt work with that lens, maybe get one small native lens you can use on the gimbal like the 25mm f1.7 or 14mm f2.5 pancake and then use the Sigma for everything else.

I've heard its a very good alternative. I personally haven't used one but theres a few good tests on RU-vid where people are praising its quality for the price. I've owned other Viltrox brand equipment in the past and for the price generally they make good stuff.

Why not lumix 12-35 2.8 with stab or olympus 12-40 2.8 without stab?

I've actually owned all 3 lenses just not at the same time. I sold the 12-40 because I wanted Image Stabilization in the 12-35. Now I own both the 12-35 and Sigma 18-35. I use the sigma much more because of that f1.8 on the speedbooster. I just really like how much more light this lens lets in compared to the 12-35. I was kinda skeptical at first having used the 12-35 for about a year and being completely happy with it, but bought the 18-35 with some extra money I had at the time and was blown away. I cant believe how big of a difference it makes and now I find myself only using that 12-35 as a backup.

does the sigma focus slow? how's the AF?

AF is slow on the GH5 with my metabones. Your milage will vary depending on your adapter. Dont buy this if you NEED solid AF performance. I'd count on this mainly as a MF lens. Sometimes I use AF just to get me close to the shot and then pull the rest of the way with MF.

18 is not wide enough, 35 is not long enough. This is specifically for b-roll only, and sucks balls for events. Add the 600$ speed booster, and it's a DONT BOTHER bollocks

Mimimimi...... You want want want.... a prime lens with zoom by 1.2 an lightweight under 300$.... My friend, the only thing Sigma should do is a 18-35 with an mft-mount. Without using this adapter-shit! 1.8 against 1.2 ? Really...? C'mon... And a heavy lens is a problem for you? Ok, if you are an astronout going to the ISS or... oh, no! Not? So whats up with you? Sorry, but allways all the people want to get the only one special lens that could not exist! How do I handle this all? Ok, first: Weight gives you a safe stand against camera shake... just physics! Secondly: Everything under f2.0 is extremely bright and helpfull...1.8 or 1.4 ... whatelse... Thirdly: how often do you use you a zoom? No primelenses at hand...? Btw. I will buy this very cool lense at the point Sigma will give us the mft-mount. Until that I will use my other gear... And: There are no "PanaLeica-Lenses" outthere... Call it "Leica DG"!
