3 MUST own VIDEO LENSES for the PANASONIC GH5

This video shows the importance of having 3 distinct lenses. Every videographer and photographer should have a workhorse, art and zoom in their kit!
These 3 lenses will cover nearly anything a shoot throws your way.
I recommend whole heartily that you buy constant aperture glass, doubly so if you do video.

Info like this is really helpful man. I love cameras but have really only been using drones and the osmo for years now. Transitioning into equipment like this is confusing and lots of people take for granted all the knowledge that is needed with this sort of gear. Another really nice break down.
@CreativeConnor
@CreativeConnor 6 лет назад
Absolutely! Sure it's stuff that you really only find out by getting into it. I would just hound photographers and film makers I knew and ask them a million and one questions about gear! And when I felt comfortable I started my own stuff and did a masters in production to bring it all together for me.. Hopefully I can help pass it on to others that are getting into realm of digital creation :)

In my lifetime I have bought dozens of lenses but have ended up pretty much back where I started with two primes, mostly on my GX7 I just use Olympus 17mm f1.8 and 45mm f1.8 primes which I will supplement with the x2 digital zoom. I have the 14-140mm, my first purchase but, the 45mm has pretty much replaced it. The older I get the less tolerant I am of shallow depth of field; I am as interested in the background as the foreground so MFT has replaced my Fx Nikons. My art lens? I carry a Leica X113 ;-)

The Voigtlander 25 and 42.5 are my go to lenses for most situations, unless I need instant flexibility like for sports or doc, in which case I use the two Panasonic zooms and maybe an Olympus 12, 25 or 17 on a second camera.

Hey, I'm an inspired filmmaker and I brought the Gh4. What lens should I get and why? I'm very new to filming, I never shot a camera before. To be honest, I'm a beginner, and what should I get with my GH4 to film a lot of projects with great quality? Also, can you use this Camera to take great pictures, and hows the sound quality on this camera? What're the best sounds equipment should I get with this camera? Lastly what lights equipment would go great with this camera? Thanks for all your help.
@CreativeConnor
@CreativeConnor 6 лет назад
+emmanuel marthol gh4 is a savage camera and film camera! The 12-35 Panasonic is a great all round lens that you can use in multiple set ups! It's wide enough to establish scenes and has a bit of range for zooming and focusing on certain elements in your shots. You'll also have image stabilisation which is great for people that haven't shot before to help steady your footage. 2 cheap neewer lights from my latest video would be perfect so go check that video out and see. I talk about lighting interviews and the different types of lighting setups 😊🤘

Hi Connor, nice to see a Flektogon included in the mix. Lovely colours and rendition from this lens. I think it needs a tweek of contrast and saturation to look its best.
@CreativeConnor
@CreativeConnor 6 лет назад
Hello Richard! Welcome welcome.. The Flektogon is lovely, certainly needs a bump in contrast and a touch sharpening. I think it's because I have it paired with a focal reducer and that plays with the lenses output a tiny bit! Do you use the lens?
@richardparrington8636
@richardparrington8636 6 лет назад
I do use the Flek, and like its versatility, you can get very close to subjects about 6 inches away which is quite unusual. Mine is stuck at f.4 so it needs to go in for repairs. Its a common problem apparently.
@CreativeConnor
@CreativeConnor 6 лет назад
The minimum focus really blew my mind the first time I used it :D What camera do you pair it with?

Connor Dunne yeah bro, im thinking i may get it for everyday use n use the sigma for client work, im thinking about getting the rokinon 85mm cine lens as they dona micro FT version of their lenses now aswel, what do you think about those lenses? If you do have any feedback. I use my gear to shoot music videos.
@CreativeConnor
@CreativeConnor 6 лет назад
+Bakano Musik Official™ Mk Cool! How did you start with music videos.. I'd be well up for getting into that work ☺ im looking at the 12m t2.2 cine rokinon and the 35 50 & 85! They do that lens set... I've heard the 24mm (I think) isn't the best performer! I'd probably but the EF mount versions and adapt to m43 so as I have bigger mount lenses for the future. I just got the Zhiyun Crane 2 & Servo follow focus.. VERY EXCITED TO USE THAT
@srobart
@srobart 6 лет назад
I have a very hard time with wide-angle lenses. Most of the photography I have always done has been either macro or nature, so when I put something like a 24mm on my camera (whether for photos or video), I don't know what to do with all that screen real-estate. The only thing I use my 24mm for is time-lapses of clouds. My instinct draws me as close as possible, to whatever I'm shooting, so I can show things as I see them in the real world. It's one of those things I have to work on. My favorite "art" lens is my Nikon 50mm f/1.2. Fun to shoot, nice focal length for me and the flares are monumental at f/1.2. It is rather pricey though and quite soft at f/1.2...unacceptably soft for 4K, imo, unless you just need soft footage for something. Speaking of waiting, I'm waiting for the postman to bring me my Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 today. It's been a LONG morning. Excellent video with great advice, just like all of your videos that I've seen. Keep up the great work!
@CreativeConnor

+Scott R did the 35 to 100 arrive? 😃 I love that thing!! Scott i really appreciate the feedback.. this channel is finding it's feet as I find a more assured presence in content delivery and improve my on screen presence 😊 I really want it to be a place for people with similar interests and ideas to have a good time 😆 the Zeiss 35mm is soft also, unless you rack it to f 11 but that's kinda not much fun 🤔 I love it's look wide open.. My variable ND filter puts manors on it in daylight 😂 I've been eying up the 100 to 400 pana/leica 😍😍 would love the reach for when I go exploring ☺ you got any big reach teles?

Connor Dunne I love it! I’ve actually been using it quite a lot. I’ve been shooting open water swim races and surfing competitions with it recently. Last night I used it for some long exposure photos from the top of a building and they turned out great. The stabilization at that length is pretty phenomenal. I just picked up the 8-18. Looking foreword to playing with it for astrophotography which I never really done.

@CreativeConnor 6 лет назад
Hey there! Sorry for my late response. RU-vid doesn't always highlight when people comment on my videos so some slip through the cracks! Did you GH5 rig arrive yet? You can always use a metabones speedbooster to get that sigma onto your GH5? The heralded Sigma 18-35 F1.8 is lauded as a killer lens for the GH5 when adapted to it. You should check it out online :D
@unigatemediacompany399
@unigatemediacompany399 6 лет назад
Hello Connor. thx for the response. yess my GH5 has arrived, what a camera. GH5 seems to have a little problem with the sigma 18-35 f1.8 lens. Im on vacation now and be back home 19th and om using Panasonic 42,5 f1.2, love that lens but I think I´ll buy a 18-35mm cine lens and a Metabones T Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Canon Full-Frame EF-Mount Lens. What do you think about that. My script for my shortfilm is soon ready then I´ll start shoot the movie and I do need to have the right lenses ready. do you may have good tips? Thanks.

Sweet! Let me know how you get on :) I'm very tempted by the new A7iii and sigma prime lens set that has been announced :O
@JulianFreeman-starsofwellbeing
I went down that route and found it turned a small light compact camera into something big and heavy. If you are on a tripod then thats fine, but mostly I'm out shooting documentary stuff. So I'm thinking that M4/3 lenses are a better option

I guess I am a little late to comment on this video, but I hope youre gonna answer anyway. So I want to buy a GH5 and the 12-35mm obviously seems to be a great always-on lens. But from watching a number of reviews of both this one and the Leica 12-60mm I kinda get the impression that the Leica actually has the better image-quality when it comes to sharpness and contrast. Sure, its not as fast and not constant a., but I am not sure I really want to zoom in shot anyway, so... Plus the 60mm could be enough to replace the longer zoom lens as well. And it is is the only lens they offer in a kit with the GH5 for 2500€ (in Germany). What do you think about that Leica lens? Have you used/considered it?
@CreativeConnor
@CreativeConnor 6 лет назад
Hey! My apologise for being late to reply. I've been away. It totally comes down to personal preference. I like the constant aperture and for me thats the most important thing. I then have the 35-100 to cover the extra focal length again with the constant aperture of 2.8! The 12-60 is a nice lens and I've used it a good few times.But theres something about like fall off when zooming that really irks me when I'm filming. Did you take the plunge? What did you go with?
@ssingh6197
@ssingh6197 6 лет назад
Question about your slow mo shots. Do you shoot at 60fps then in post drop in down to 24fps, or do you shoot at 24fps and use the variable frame rate to crank it up to 60?
@CreativeConnor
@CreativeConnor 6 лет назад
For this video I shot slow motion at 180 in variable and speed ramped where appropriate. 4k shots where 25p 10bit. But now I use 50p 4k 8bit as the flexibility is more necessary than the colour depth.. Which isn't great currently locked at 150mbps so you don't lose a lot between 10 and 8 bit right now. It'll be a bigger difference once firmware 2.0 is released 😊

Hello Connor, I need to buy a lens for the GH5S for filming a talk show. Which one is cinematic lens for this, up to $2000. And, which bluetooth mic is the best fit, up to $500? Many thanks!
@CreativeConnor
@CreativeConnor 5 лет назад
Samuel sorry for the slow reply! I don't have experience with Bluetooth mics. I use the Sennheiser AVX kits. they are the cat's pyjamas 📸😎 Holy moly that's a lot of cash for a lens! The 12mm F1.4 from Panasonic might be a good fit... Or adopting the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 with a speedbooster!

you can buy a samyang cine lens kit for €1500, they look amazing just by an EF to M 4/3 adapter like a Voltrox cheaper than metabones.

I had a 12-35 MK 1 as my first lens when I got a GH4, but sold after getting a GH5 and using it for a while it because I noticed it wasn't sharp in the edges as it was in the middle at wider angles and I take a lot of landscape type videos and noticed the softer edges at times there. I instead got an Olympus 12-40 and find it overall sharper and I don't miss not having IS with the lens since the GH5 IBIS works well enough. I do find the colours different a little on the 12-35 compared to the Olympus 12-40, maybe a bit more saturated or "punchier" if that is the right word where the Olympus is a bit more neutral. I have 4 other lenses I use. An Olympus 60mm Macro, which I find works great for close up shots and when taking videos and using wider shots using the Olympus 12-40 as well since the colours look very similar to it. I also have the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 II and quite like it, but I haven't found many uses for mine yet, but I do like the wide aperture. I also have a Panasonic 100-300mm MK I and use it to get shots mostly of birds, but I find its not as sharp at 300mm as at 100-250mm and the shaking you get from it at 300mm, even on a tripod makes it a little hard to use, but maybe the MK II version with Power IOS has solved that shake. My last lens I got a Metabones T smart adaptor (EF/EF-S version, the not the speedbooster) and use a Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro for extra reach for macro shots which I have found works well for insects like dragonflies, butterflies, flies etc.. that don't like you getting close to them. I got the adaptor as eventually I would like to get a lens like the Canon 100-400mm for further away wildlife.

Dave! Cheers for such a nice comment! Sorry about my delay in responding. I've only heard great things from users of the Olympus lenses! They're built like tanks and I've used a few briefly and enjoyed them. I really want to get into macro photography but it seems like a dark art if you want to adapt lenses onto the m43 bodies. I recently picked up the 100-400 leica and love it. It's got something about it.. that makes me just love using it. I haven't nearly gotten enough out of it yet. But I'm making a nature photography list of wildlife I want to photograph and film around Ireland and that will see this lens come into it's own. Have you seen the new G9 that was announced? Would you consider getting one?
@DynamixWarePro
@DynamixWarePro 6 лет назад
Hi, I have done some macro photography with my GH5 (and some videos) and I have used a Panasonic 30mm Macro but it was too short for my needs so I now normally use a Olympus 60mm Macro lens. I also have an old Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro I got in 2007 for my Canon 400D (it no longer focuses well and have had the auto focus repaired twice in the past) and use it with a Metabones T Smart Adaptor EF/EF-S version, not the speedbooster, on my GH5 and it works fine and gives me a longer 210mm equivalent focal length which is better for insects which can get disturbed easily and don't get shadows from being too close to the subject, except I can't really use it with auto focus. The G9 looks like it could be one of the best M4/3 cameras for photography and I do really like it from what I have seen, but I already have a GH5 and take more videos and photos and the GH5 is better for videos, but if I didn't have the GH5 and was looking to get a M4/3 photography camera, it would defiantly be it as it seems Panasonic might be wanting to keep their GH line more for the best video features and put the best photography features in their G9 and onward cameras, which could mean better cameras for video and photography in the future.

Your comments about the Panasonic 12-35mm helps a lot. What keeps creeping into my head is the people that say the Oly 12-40mm is better. I get that it has been established by many owners to be sharper. The manual focus ring is better and admittedly I have no experience with this and how it will effect me. The closer focusing and the obvious 5mm on the longer end. With that said, it's bigger, heavier and not OIS. My plan is to buy the GH5 with the 12-35mm as the "kit" lens. I hope it's the right decision.

+Richard Cabezza that's what I did Richard! Got the pana 12-35 As my first lens! Genuinely don't think you'd be disappointed! The extra 5mm reach doesn't make up for the lack of ois and weight. The Olympus is gorgeous no doubt about it, but so is the Panasonic 😊

All sorts of shots! The 12-35 is a brilliantly versatile focal length! 😊 wides for streets and scene setting and medium to close for portraiture and people shooting in cities 😆 It's as versatile as you are creative 📸

For zooms the panasonic 12 -35 & 35-100 f2.8s ii are very sharp, let in decent amounts of light, are small and stabilised! For portraits the sigma 56 F1.4 or Panasonic 42.5 F1 7/f 1.2. I'd get the zooms and a nice portrait lens 😎 that way you're covered for anything

I agree with the two zooms. They are 2/3 of the trinity used by ff/35mm shooters for ages.While it won’t do your wallet any favors, my prime of choice is the 42.5mm f1.2 nocticron. It is an amazing lens with great design. You can use the aperture ring to set aperture, or move it to A and control it with the camera. F1.2 is heat DoF and a lot of light.

For me it's the 12-32 pancake // 14mm 2.5 pancake // 20mm 1.7 pancake // 42.5 1.8 and the helios. Of course with the metabones I use all my sigma art and L series canon glass. Those pancakes are amazing just check out the videos on my channel and reviews.

As another proud owner and RU-vidr as well, I do agree that the GH5 is the best camera for what we do. There are things that they can do on the software side to make it better. For one get rud of that mountain and flower focus distance ranger. It's better to have what the S1H has with the actual measurement. Two, give us more paid upgrades. I can't just think that the only paid upgrade was VLOGL. Which tells me the camera can do more. I bet a higher dynamic range in the shadows and more. They are holding it back. Here why say this. The G9; better processor same sensor, but it won't work with the audio adapter. Panasonic is just stopping it. Isn't true the BMPCC4K is the same sensor as the GH5s?
@CreativeConnor
@CreativeConnor 4 года назад
Hey, Shaoba "BMPCC4K is the same sensor as the GH5s" not sure on this at all. If it is the same sensor then the BM4k has got a really top-notch sensor! Wouldn't surprise me though. Pretty sure Sony is making all the sensors for most cameras these days 😂 I'd love to have the S1H focus measurement! It's class compared to the silly mountain & flower! Can't ever trust it 100%. So many great cameras out at the moment and more on the horizon! Looking forward to the next couple of years from all the manufactures

when you say a lens is fast what does it mean ? does it focus fast ? what is constant aperture ?
@CreativeConnor
@CreativeConnor 6 лет назад
hello there! A constant aperture example: The Panasonic 12-35mm F2.8 is when you zoom from the 12mm focal length to the 35mm focal length the iris (aperture) of the lens doesn't change. It remains at f2.8 throughout the focal range. This means the same amount of light is let in to the sensor at all focal lengths. A lens that is 12mm-35mm f2.8 - f5.6 would be an f2.8 at 12mm and as you zoom to 35mm the aperture changes to f5.6. The amount of light that hits the sensor at 35mm f5.6 is significantly less that at 12mm f2.8.And the word fast is related to the F stop of the lens. 1.4 is faster than 2.8, 2.8 is faster than 5.6, f5.6 is faster than f8. It is to do with the amount of light let through the lens that the sensor is being exposed to. 😊

no really shoud i get it? there is some negative reviews! or they dont know nothing?)) one complain for flairs at morning of cpurse there will be some if you point and it wasnt golden hour it was whn its worst time to shoot)), but what really bother me that stabilizer some sat they get lots of jittery , shaky video, but again it can happen when you operate with steadicam if you go rough on it one was funny wanted good bokeh on 12mm even i know so much 12mm not for bokeh but to get it all and clear and acctually one has to be more artistic to create good composition)) i have smc takumar 50/1.4 whatever i shoot with it(picture) all are magical suoerduper pictures and bokeh something out of this world:D
