"be careful if you have a large pet since they might try to-" let's talk about that time one of my Pyrenees actually managed to break a beef trotter and I spent three days nervously staring at her butt because I wanted to be sure she didn't get anything too big lodged in there. She did not. And she was very proud.

Wow! I used raw meaty bone but the other day a local butcher gave me a heavy beef bone for the doggis. And my mom bought a processed stick for cleaning dog teeth. The dog was all day working on that stuff and today he woke up with the vast majority of his tartar build up gone. It's incredible

I use a commercial raw nugget but it does lead to plaque because its all ground up. Including Chicken wings literally saved my dogs teeth. Hes Chihuahua dachshund and both breeds have histories of dental issues. Hes 15 and has only lost one tooth to decay thats when i made the switch. Has most of his vision and hearing (a little loss is normal in old age) and the only sign hes as old as he is is his gray face and feet. He has so much more energy and lost all his excess weight.

HI :) I have a 6y old white shepherd and have been feeding him raw for two years now (mainly) because he has teeth issues. The vet has to put him under anesthesia every year to clean them and says he's going to have to take out his back teeth next year :( I don't know what to do because those are the main teeth he uses to break the bones in his daily meals. I asked if I should brush his teeth and the vet says it woudn't change anything. I give him big meaty bones to chew several times a week and it doesn't seem to improve. I woudn't ever go back to anything other than a raw diet anyways, it has saved him from big intestinal issues he had all his life before this :) thank you so much for your beautiful work and this precious information

I just had to take my dog to get teeth taken out , his doing great with his side taken out I know it sucks because there’s honestly to do to fix it beside the teeth coming out if they are causing the problem i know for my dog his teeth where starting to damage his gums which would end up messing up the teeth that where around the damage area also maybe him using mainly those set of teeth is actually what’s damaging them ? (Just putting it out there since I know that can be a reason )

Feed bones that relate to what he would kill in the wild like small game , birds etc... Chicken legs, wings. I have heard chicken neck sinew can get caught in between the teeth and cause decay. Bigger bones like cow all the time aren't that natural. That's my opinion.

Resource guarding is trainable. What I mean is, you either train them to do it, or you train them to not do it. It's easy to train them to resource guard you simply have to do nothing as a baseline. If you want to train your dog to NOT resource guard, then you need to ... NEED to hand feed them. This is labor intensive, but not complicated. There are two ways to do this: 1. Hand feed them food directly from your hand while you hold it. During this process, you can train them in "Out" (wherin they let go of whatever is in their mouth). Training them "Out" (or whatever word you use for the to drop things) with hand feeding is a MASSIVE win. When you first start training it, you can give them other food of the same type as a reward, or what I do, is give them a lower value food reward. This teaches the animal that all rewards are rewards, and helps you better measure their level of food guarding and obedience. Make sure to mark their behavior (YES!), and reward them with love and praise. Then go back to feeding them their actual food after a short break of a few seconds. 2. Give them the food in bit sized portions from your hand. Don't hold it. You can do this through training by giving their meals as the training reward. For instance, sit, stay, recall... That can be their breakfast. Down, Out (drop it), leave it, can be dinner. This really really drives home obedience for the things I refer to as "emergency" commands. You don't want any confusion or guessing when you tell your dog to drop something "Out!", or leave something alone, or to come, or stay... etc. These commands aren't tricks. They are for the safety of you, your dog, and other people and animals. If you consistently, and calmly feed your dog in this manner... they WILL NOT food guard. If all you do is put down a bowl, and let them eat... they get to make that decision and will train themselves without your input.

@@TigerZ8 Well, I lost out on my statement on my original post of testing to see if my dog will bury the most recent bone I gave him. Yep, he did. My dog philosophy is simply that a dog will be a dog and I have no trouble with that. I also have no trouble with him guarding his stash by growling at me if I go near his stash. Dogs will be dogs. I'm guessing that it's some sort of instinct a few dogs have. Whatever.

Hello! Thank you for all of your work and help in this matter! Question: my 5 months old kitten refuses to try any sort of bone tissue in any meat or fish, regardless of how soft it is, she just lefts it on the plate or plays with it like it's a toy. She eats all kinds of meat, organs, fish, seafood, egg yolk, chicken broth jello, and in addition and I give her the Nutra Thrive for cats supplement that supposed to cover all the minerals and vitamins gaps (including Calcium). Her blood test shows a good calcium level but I feel like if she was in the wild nature she would have to consume way more meaty bones with her prey. Do you think I should add eggshell powder just in case? Thank you!!!

My cats love ground up chicken carcasses (the leftover bones, after meats been removed) they still have meat on them so the resulting mince looks like ground meat but it’s 50% bone and my cats much prefer it to plain ground chicken meat. The blood and marrow inside the bones must make it tastier. Ask your butcher to grind up some chicken carcasses or chicken backs for you.

I give my dog raw meaty bone and hold it from the other end. When he bites it I brush his teeth with electric tooth brush. Even he often growls he won't let go of the bone and he only gets bones after teeth brushing. If it doesn't work make sure he is hungrier and always start with normal toothbrush and shorter brushing time. My dog didn't like the taste of dog toothpastes so I first used seasalt water instead. At first I stopped giving him any treats and only gave him them after teeth cleaning. His treats were raw meat and dried chunks of beef which cleans teeth also. I have used soda dissolved in water few times to get his teeth clean and white. In my country buying bones from meat market is 30 times cheaper than buying them from petstore, they are fresh and come from animal welfare certificated farms which most farms here are. You can ask leftover pieces for your dog while buying bones which are almost free too and great for dog's teeth. You might all know this but I wish someone had told me this before. I tried every other tip my veterinarians and dog trainers gave me to clean my rescue dog's teeth and nothing worked.

Most marrow bones I have seen have little or no meat on them. Also, even though my dogs are small, they will chew dangerously on the end of it by fitting the edge between the teeth. I don't understand what the marrow bones do for any dog. The knuckle bones sound promising. Also, within minutes, my yorkie will have a rack of ribs torn apart so then we are down to individual ribs. And he will bite through them rapidly. He is a power chewer.

One of my miniature poodles (20 pound, adult dog) does not chew on raw bones even though he loves to chew on commercial, starchy, fake bones. He eats freeze dried, commercial, raw; frozen, commercial raw and home cooked, carnivore appropriate food that all contains finely ground bone or calcium supplement. So, I finally came up with something he would accept that cleans his teeth and gives him the nutrition of the bone and cartilage of raw, meaty bones: I use poultry shears to cut up chicken necks or duck necks or chicken wings or chicken feet into chunks. The chunks are too big for him to want to swallow whole so he crunches them up before swallowing. I can hear him crunching them and his teeth are getting scrubbed. My hope is that I can soon graduate him to bigger segments and then to whole bones which I'm sure he will enjoy. He just does not yet know he will so just easing him into it.

Yes you can do 50/50. It's often best to feed a raw meal and a separate kibble meal, as raw digests much quicker than kibble. This is a great way to start out raw feeding. Best of luck!
@areyoumadbroxd6861
@areyoumadbroxd6861 3 года назад
Do NOT feed RAW AND KIBBLE TOGETHER AT THE SAME TIME! EVER! Kibble takes longer to digest and raw digests much quicker than kibble does so when you mix the two in a bowl, the raw is left in the stomach longer than it needs to be which causes a dangerous bacterial boom and causes many dogs to get sick. Always make sure you feed kibble and raw a minimum of 8 hours apart from each other!

Shouldn’t u get your dogs used to the act of taking their food away by hand ? You want them not to become aggressive so that if a child ever does come and take their food they won’t respond negatively?

@rachelwilbur9512
@rachelwilbur9512 3 года назад
Is she the kitty in your picture? If she isn’t used to eating bone in meat she will have to build up her jaw muscles. Start with more delicate bones like chicken wing tips, quail ribs with breast meat or Cornish hen ribs with breast meat. You can also split a chicken neck in half lengthwise so she only has to chew half the bone segments but they are safely connected by meat. Offering larger chunks of boneless meat will also help build her jaw strength. As she builds strength she will be able to handle whole chicken necks, quail frames, Cornish hen frames (except for the drumsticks-I find those too heavy for my cats), rabbit ribs…etc.

Not to the point where they will damage them, of course unless your dog bites down too hard on the weight bearing bones I mentioned in 4 and 5, which some dogs may! This is why you monitor them.

Don’t agree on the luring away with a higher value item. Just like encouraging anything else in training, you give a high value reward when they do it right. If a dog resource guards and you give a higher value reward, you are encouraging that behavior. It’s better to teach your dog an “out” command which is “move away from what you are engaged with or move out of where ever you are”. Lots of RU-vid videos how to teach it.

Don't give this to small dogs. My dog died a few days ago, because of chickens bones. I didn't wanted to give her, but she took from another dog, and died 2 or 3 days after. She bleed out. Stupid vet thought its virus, even though I told him, million times what happened, but he said it's 99% virus, and she died the next day. She was 3 and a half months old.

Common misconception. Raw bones are perfectly safe for dogs to consume as long as they are fed under supervision and aren’t too dense for them to fully consume. That’s actually how raw fed dogs (and cats) get their calcium.

Most vets in the USA will say that dogs should only eat kibble and try to sell you some Hill's Science Diet made with aflatoxin contaminated grain waste, rejected from the human food supply and rendered, putrid meat made into powdered "meal". Definitely don't listen to US trained veterinarians about canine nutrition.
