As someone who HAS watched captain laserhawk, Rayman is quite a diffrent character, literally an alien manipulates into thinking he was doing the right thing while in reality he was just a mascot to hide the horrible things the company was doing. Amazing show btw
I really do wonder who the show runners were, it's a ubisoft show, yet it goes against practically everything the company (internally) stands for. Which is just fucking hilarious to me.
@@KetamineTripnope cyberpunk edgerunners was made in japan by studio trigger know for anime series like Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagan. Captain laserhawk is 100% american project done by Ubisoft themselves(Ubisoft Films and television)
@@MokonaModokiES Actually believe it or not, it was made by Balak and his team. Their previous work was a show called Peepoodoo or something. Don't watch it unless you're 18 or over.
Captain Laserhawk is actually fantastic. I also thought at first glance that Rayman in that show was gonna be a shallow edgy parody of himself but the show is actually super cool and his character is extremely fleshed out and interesting.
And you can tell which game characters are gonna live and die depending on the state of the franchise. SPOILERS Like Rayman Alive but going insane Bullfrog Alive but beaten to a pulp Jade and Uncle Peyj Dead
@@teneesh3376- With Michel Ancel leaving Ubisoft a few years ago on top of allegations of being a toxic boss, I wouldn't be surprised if Ubisoft declared Beyond Good and Evil 2 a dead project. - I like how they kept Rayman's sense of justice and heroism but just made him an edgier character with more nuance. He initially starts out spreading propaganda about the Hybrids before realizing he was being used and fights against those who manipulated them.
Rayman by character kinda feels like Sonic, but as Sonic more feels like edgy and teen-like, Rayman feels more down-to-earth, enthusiastic and expressive. I kinda love his visual design too, also with the colors.
Rayman has a lot of great redesigns that stay true to the character. And without a doubt the Sparks of Hope design is the Best Blend of Legends and the Rayman 3 Design, and I am actually glad the Rayman's personality draws more from his 3D Platformer Titles much more. As for Captain Lazerhawk, his characterization is much more fleshed out than I realize. And it's not just meta commentary on how Ubisoft treated Rayman on the surface level, him coming from another word where it's more fantastical where Good and Bad are easy to distinguish and pulled into a gritty world is the point and Rayman comes to realize it.
Interested in that second point. Is the show actually any good? I dug Castlevania and understand some of the same people are behind it... But the vibe is so strange lmao
@@ArtistMarkFlynn I think it's only 6 episodes long and some dude on yt made a video on why bullfrog is the best character on the show and honestly even though i still haven't watched the show that video made it seem absolutely worth it
Captain Laserhawk is so good. The show has a lot of great homages to video games while being a fascinating Dystopian Cyberpunk story. It's got a lot of great characters including Rayman who gets a wild character arc. Give it a watch.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn I also just finished Blue Eye Samurai. Extremely beautiful and entertaining show if you need something else on the amazing Netflix animated backlog.
Legends' gorgeous artstyle, along with Rayman's brilliant design, wonderful animations and soundscape, eminates a subtle, yet reassuring touch of 'french'. It's hard to explain, but it is an omnipresent feeling whenever i play the game. That aside, lovely video!
What's interesting is that while they developed Rayman's new design for Rayman 3, in the early stages they used Rayman's R2 model. You can even find the model being used on the earliest betas for the game. It really shows how the team didn't just want to quickly hijack Rayman's design into being ''Hip and Cool'' for an audience living in 2003, they really wanted to maintain what the character was all about in what I believe to be a genius set of changes. Even though, in later games, it was perfected, Rayman 3's design was undoubtyly the perfect set for a modern look on the character. From his hoodie, his detailed shoes that simplified overtime, and his hood strings that kept changing color and material, it is simply a joy to analyze. You can tell that Michel Ancel had a big role into making this design, even though he was occupied developing Beyond Good and Evil, he still wanted Rayman's new look to be something worth looking at. Great video btw! I seriously thought they kept his little shoe swirls in Legends, but I was corrected. Not a big loss IMO, though I think it's a nice touch since it uses a similar aesthetic found in Rayman 2 (Ly's outfit, Overworld's textures...). Looking forward for more!
He still supervised the project while working on Beyond Good and Evil. He reportedly was very proud of what his team accomplished even though he was working on another project. Rayman 3 definitely feels more "of its time" compared to The Great Escape, which strove to be more timeless.
I am such a big Rayman fan and have been for over ten years and besides being happy that you discussed him (i totally agree with you on like 100% of the video :D) Im also incredibly happy with captain laserhawk :) i am so happy with his portrayal. He’s a genuinely loveable character who was exploited by the system and then defends whats right. Seeing Rayman, even in the world of the show, go out of his way to save someone whos innocent, really sold me on him.
Ah man I'm glad!!! I made this thumbnail in 2020/2021, I've been dying to make a Rayman video for the longest time. Such an underrated platformer mascot.
In Rayman origins his hair is actually explained with his hair not even being actual hair, but really just a bunch of hair people that were migrating to a new head that found Raymans bald head so his hair is actually alive
Back when I made animated parodies of Rayman so many years ago, I drew him in a few different styles, but my favorite was in Rayman 3 style but with Rayman 2 style shoes. It's nice seeing the detail of the Sparks of Hope version which basically does the same thing (though the eyebrows and tinted eyelids may take some getting used to). As for Captain Laserhawk, it was quite a fun watch, though it feels like the first half needed more time to flesh out some of the characters, including the titular Dolph Laserhawk. If you're only curious about Rayman's involvement, and you've already seen his outburst at Red and his drunk argument with the Board of Directors, just watch episodes 5 and 6. Most of his screentime and the rise of his character arc happen there. Rayman and Bullfrog (the ridiculous but loveable Assassin's Creed frog) really are the highlights of the show.
Totally didn't write this script, record this video, and do 70% of the edit a YEAR AGO. Only to then scramble like a madman to rewrite/re-record a week ago and re-edit most of the whole thing.
I was initially really skeptical about Rayman's inclusion in Blood Dragon Remix aswell, but the more I hear and see about it, the more I appreciate that interpretation of the character. I wouldn't say that his character is incredibly different as much as it is a faithful reiteration. Not a one to one adaptation, but something that blurs the lines. One of the coolest things about Rayman is that he has such a flexible character, so I'm glad to see them effectively use it!
Fantastic to see the initial reception to this! In case your new, and want to see more like this I have already made BEST Design Videos on: - Sonic - Mario - Link - Ganon - Dante - Vergil - Jill Valentine - Chris Redfield - Samus - Ridley - Bayonetta - Shadow - Knuckles - Tails - Crash Bandicoot - Spyro the Dragon - Cloud - Tifa - Aerith - Sephiroth - Sora - Pikachu - Doom Slayer - Tom Nook - Dr Eggman A lot of these are older now and the RU-vid algorithm doesn't favour them as much... If you're new and want to help inject some life into those videos please do!
Glad to see you back. For me Legends and Origins are my favorite. Not only are the beautiful to look at, they are also fantastic 2D platformers. I love these games and they have aged like fine wine. Don't look any worse than the day they released. If they released another title today with no visual improvements no one would complain, that's how beautiful they are.
I loved Captain Laserhawk. For those who haven't watched it, just know everything you knew about Ubusoft characters, throw that out the window cause this show isn't the games. Rayman is easily a great character in the show, and it was so weird seeing him as just completely different from who I knew him as.
Sparks of Hope & Captain Laserhawk Rayman designs went HARD. I have a love of Origins/Legends mainly because that's how I was properly introduced to the character & his games but the most recent designs do him a lot of justice. And yeah, Captain Laserhawk is worth watching. It's strange, quirky, and blends together all of the games quite well in my opinion. Rayman is not there for shock value either, he actually has a story arc and everything.
Rayman Origins/Legends does definitely have an amazing art style. Really do wish we get a third entry even if it's by new people in the same engine, or they get the developers back to work on one. I would say Laser Hawk is a fairly good watch. Check it out if you get the chance. You can see Rayman eat some sushi in the show. 🤣
They had some mobile spin-offs though which focus on short levels but it's essentially the same thing (and you can play the first two on windows with the help of a tutorial here on yt), Jungle Run for Origins, Fiesta Run for Legends and then Adventures (Never played that one but it seemed to have the most content out of the previous two) and Mini (iOS only, features Mr. Dark from Rayman 1 for some reason, but i personally didn't like it much since the physics felt wayyyy too different from Legends unlike Fiesta Run for example)
Getting to see the concept art and hear from the designers of sparks of hope has been so cool! That design was literally made by rayman fans for rayman fans! The entire team was stoked to be working on something rayman related! And it shows, this 3D render looks incredible!
Agreed completely on Origins’ advantage over Legends and the UbiArt engine. In general I think Origins is the better game but this would become an essay on game design if I went on. It seems as though UbiArt was created a decade too soon, as the graphics race was only getting hotter in the early 2010s. Now we’ve reached a point where more and more players are speaking on the value of an appealing art style over outright realism, and if the engine had only launched this year, I think it would get way more praise as a revolutionary prospect. Okay maybe that’s talking it up a bit but my point stands lmao. Hi-Fi Rush, Pizza Tower, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, all games completely elevated by their unique visuals and sound design. Popular opinion seems to be that Rayman’s platforming return should be in 3D but I’d be completely satisfied with another 2D UbiArt venture because the last two games haven’t aged a day in my eyes. Great vid, also you’re rocking the breaking bad
Rayman has great designs over the years, I think the origins and legends ones are my favorite designs of them all, This designs has the best designs of rayman, Captain LaserHawk is so good, Thank you Captain LaserHawk😊😊😊
Great video! I'm glad to see Rayman back; I thought he looked really cute (& later badass) in Captain Laserhawk. It was an interesting watch. It's only 6 episodes, so I think it's worth it to check out. Rayman and Bullfrog were the best characters. 🤭 Either way, game-wise Rayman definitely looks the best in Origins. Hope we get to see him as the leading lad in his own game again.
As someone who watched Captain Laserhawk, the show isnt TOO worth watching (a lot of poor writing with the main characters) but Rayman is absolutely the highlight. His story in the show is being a mascot for the dystopian society he lives in, and eventually realizing the propaganda hes been spreading all this time and takes matters into his own hands. Honestly I would have loved if he was the main character because they did him so well
Sparks of Hope gives me...well hope that Rayman may return in 3D its very clear the team behind Sparks are fans of the series and i have faith they will get tasked with brining rayman back into his own game someday
I love Capitan Laserhawk version of Rayman, is other Rayman but is amazing that in the same scene he is as funny in a superficial way, as he is tragic, and of all the characters I think he is the one who has a story in which he has to say the most. I like the games I played, but I admit that this Rayman made me obsessed with the character. Shorts on RU-vid, taken out of context are misleading. I watched the show out of curiosity about those shorts expecting a ridiculous thing in relation to the character, and the irony was that Bullfrog and Rayman were in my opinion the two most authentic characters, in a group of characters, including the main one who for the most seems to me to have close to no personality outside of some cliche cool trait, I fee likel they were made for cool anecdotes. I think that the villain of the show in the end becomes something interesting and more complex. I do recommend the show for Rayman and Bullfrog. And yep, I really want a season 2, hopefully with more than 6 chapters to allow for more character development. It is worth mentioning that you can tell that the voice actor gave his all, and I think it has a lot to do with the success of the characterization. Also, yes it's another Rayman, but if you consider that his quest is for the liberation of all species it's not that far from Rayman 2. When it comes to the design my favorite is Origins...and the design in Laserhawk xD. In general I think that Rayman's design is very iconic, and has the potential to be as popular as Sonic or Mario, but it has been very wasted in recent years, because Ubisoft wouldn't be Ubisoft not caring about their games.
It’s funny because I never played a game of Rayman but I love him since some weeks ago, because of Captain Laserhawk make me know him. Before that, I just had seem some pictures or images of him and his games, but I never really know who he was. Since I watch the series on Netflix and start to love this character, I had begin a lot of research on him (the true Rayman): when he was created, how many games there is of him and which games is the best (origins and legends), and I discovered the sad truth about how Rayman don’t really have much games this last few years, and I feel bad for this cute little creature. His personality in the games are just so adorable and I really love him now more than ever.❤
I feel like the newest design in the rabbids game takes advantage of better technology making it in a way a bit too overdesigned, for example the hoodie with all the little parts of the sawing, and also for the hands, where i think realistic details clash with the fact that its just a floating 4 finger white hand ahahah Also preferred the shoes from 2 and origins, for being simpler and a bit less flashy, while these ones are more in the direction of the rayman 3 ones, while also definetly taking inspiration from the ones in 2
Really, I love all of Rayman's designs from HH and onward. The hoodie just looks so good on him. Also his hair looks more like hair in his newer designs. My first Rayman game was Rayman 2, and I actually thought his hair was like...rabbit ears? It wasn't until 3 that I realized that was his hair. Origins is my second favorite. I love the crisp, bright cartoon look and how expressive he is. Looking closely at his model, you can see subtle movements in his hair, and even in the drawstrings of his hoodie. He just looks so alive, even if he only has one braincell. I think Sparks of Hope is probably the best we've seen of Rayman, not only in terms of design, but also personality. The model was designed to make him even more expressive, both with his face and with body language. The writers also nailed his personality. Certainly more than Laserhawk did. I absolutely despise that show for what it did to Rayman.
Can anyone tell me why Rayman throws energy balls in 2 rather than the classic hand throwing? Always loved Rayman 3 with it's eclectic and funky aesthetics especially the ramshackle, rednecky looking hoodlum enemies and areas. Always wished Murfy stuck around to talk smack the whole game. Hope they get Danny Devito to voice him in a future game. Also they were horny out of their skulls when they were making Rayman Origins, Sweet Lord. But then again they are French.
Laser hawk was really good surprisingly I'm not going to lie despite it probably being the intention of the show rayman doing adult stuff actually made sense in context of the story
Imagine a new Rayman 3 style game with the Mario Rabbits design and graphics... but knowing how Ubisoft treats him, he probably won't ever come back, especially since Michel Ancel's departure from the video game industry
I still play legends after 5 years and I’ve gotta say it’s still amazing with challenges coming out every day and week with different layouts even been able to make it to top 100 on Xbox the community is good legends has to be one of my all time favourite games
I have watched Captain laser hawk and it’s amazing I will say sometimes it goes a little to dark especially the scene where Rayman is snorting some unidentified substance it is a very hooking and great show
Great video! I still think rayman's design from Rayman 3 is almost peak, but the sparks of hope one might just border on a little better. I loved the video, and while I disagree with some of your tastes, this was a wonderful piece of content.❤
Agree. I think Rayman 3 was the best design wise. If they redid it just as smooth and polished as Mario Rabbits one, we would get the ultimate Rayman design
The only thing that stops the Origins/Legends design from being my favorite its something very very nitpickiny, its Rayman's constant doofy expression. Never liked how frozen he looks with that face. Maybe its a personal thing but growing up with Rayman and seeing his renders over the years I always envisioned him as the more "level headed" of the platforming mascots. Less manic and in your face like your Crashs and Sonics but still has a bit more of a cartoony edge than the Marios. The Origin/Legends design always made him look like the Idiot Hero trope and I never felt Rayman really fit the Idiot. But its a super minor thing and it just made it one point shy from first place. My favorire currently its the Sparks of Hope design, a fantastic blend of Rayman 3, Origins and even a little bit of Rayman 2. Really hope this is the design they stick for hopefully a future platforming entry.
DUDE, I agree wholeheartedly! One of the biggest selling points of Rayman as a character is his expressiveness! Every detail is meant to convey something more, but Origins and Legends only seems to give the bare minimum in that department.
I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere, but I thought it might be interesting to know that the DS version of "Rayman: Raving Rabbids" is an actual platformer, not a party game like the wii version.
This is something I considered delving into but tbh by this point I was struggling to find the will to continue on with the script😂. If I can recall it looked very similar to the previous handheld games but the costumes acted as power ups!
I could never get into the 2d games and the rabbits kinda ruined Rayman for me. But the 2nd game will always be my favourite and he is a staple of my childhood. A Rayman 2 remaster would be sooooo good. Captain Lazerhawk was actually really good and for some reason Rayman snorting coke and shooting up an organization just feels right for the character, he was always a pretty edgy character so the change was actually super fun, give the show a go its good fun.
i think origins/legends is my favorite design for him but im probably biased cause those are the only ones i’ve played lol i even have 100% completion on legends (the wii u version at least) and that’s the only game where i’ve gotten to that point ever generally though hes a funny little guy. i wanna put him in a plastic container and shake him around a little
13:30 I think you should check it also Rayman is a News Reporter not a Game show host also if you do watch it would you consider doing a first impressions on it because I really want someone with a big platform to get more people to check this show out because it looks like it's only getting one or two seasons
the character satisfies me, good design, good story, and good sequels!... kind of... (rabbids 🤪🐰) the only exception is for mario + rabbids which is good
Personal i think since this year Rayman has has 2 come backs i things they will rereleases the first 3 games in a collection (Btw Rayman Legends is my favourite game ever at the point where i will buy anything with new Rayman content).
I like LazerHawk Rayman's inclusion - it's more than a cheap laugh and a story better told with an IRL mascot than a stand in. Actually, he was my favorite part - rest of the show as kinda mid.
I personaly Love Rayman desing in Rayman 3, his desing in sparks of hope its also good but im not sold on his eyebrows they are a bit out of place in my opinion
