I’ve had the Camp King Industries Roof Top Tent for six weeks and so far taken it camping to the Woodlands, up the coast and down South in both mild conditions and cold nights. Coming from a swag, I wanted to keep my camp setup quick and easy, so researched over the past year for an upgrade to an Australian manufactured RTT.
The RTT is a fantastic size fitting a standard double-sized mattress. It’s a high tent creating plenty of room, and when closes with all of my bedding inside so in around a minute I can have the tent set up and I’m ready to go to sleep.
Both the Aluminium shell and canvas is manufactured in Australia and is designed to withstand the harsh Australian weather conditions. The design on the outside is simple with four heavy-duty hinges, two external gas struts and extrusion trails on top for mounting or tying gear down. At the rear, there are two lockable laches and a single handle for opening and closing the tent.
The canvas is a poly/cotton construction, perfect for situations where a large amount of fabric is folded into a compact space which is what you need when you are packing the RTT down.
Inside there are multiple pockets for storage and 12v sockets.

One of the coolest vehicles customised for photography. When you showed those overhead drone shots on the beach Andrew, just kept thinking how wonderful and peaceful that would be to wake up to the view and the sounds of the ocean. hope you have many happy adventures in your rig

Thanks Jimmy, one of the greatest things about camping on the beach is the morning views and the sounds of the ocean. We have to travel well out of the city to be able to drive onto the the beach, but lucky for us, we have plenty of beach in Western Australia! 👍

It's a good tent and I love the height inside, as someone short 164cm I would be able to stand up and get dresses, that said, I think they really need to improve on this design and incorporate an awning that covers the side windows so that it will shield you from the rain while still keeping the window open nearer the top of the tent.

Hi Andrew, nice setup. Check out emp underlay for under your mattress, instead of a quilt, it lets air circulate under the mattress. I've been using it my RTT for about 4 years now and it works great. It will be interesting to here your comments when you have camped in some very strong wind. I lived in WA for 10 years I know how windy it gets.
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 3 года назад
Thanks for the tip Brad, I'll check out those underlays. It does get windy here in WA (some say WA stands for "Windy Always"). I've spent one night in the tent in windy conditions near the coast and the tent performed really well. I turned the car around so the top of the tent coped most of the wind. I'll be interesting to so how it performs with the wind coming in form the other direction. Thanks again for your comment.

Blimey, that’s a quick tear-down! Having used Eezy-awns many times, this looks so much quicker by comparison. Solves the problem of a roof-tent, i.e. having to pack it away before moving off in the vehicle in the morning. With this it’s done in seconds! I might stick with my wee camper van for the climate up here in Northern Scotland though!

That''s a top bit of kit you have there! My partner and I had a fold over RTT for a bit but found it very cumbersome and fiddly to pack away like you mentioned. Looked at other options of roof tents but on a Prado the hard shells just don't seem to fit well and we couldn't justify the cost and weight up top. Ended up going with an Oztent instead. I'm curious as to where this was filmed? It looks like Wellington Dam? Cheers and thanks for the great video. Keep up the great work!

Cheers mate, yeah there’s a big range out there for RTTs. The Camp King Industries has been a great addition to the set. I can see how this looks like Wellington Dam but it was filmed up in Gnangara-moore River State Forest

Hey mate. Really appreciate this video. I have the same car as you and have just recently had the same canopy from Norweld installed. I’m looking at CampKing RTT as well. Did you have to modify the canopy side doors so that when they open they don’t hit the RTT as the RTT is just slightly wider than the canopy itself. Thanks again for a great video and excellent setup.
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 3 года назад
Nice one mate, I'm sure you're enjoying the canopy and the Camp Kings Industries RTT will be a great addition. There was no need to modify the canopy for the RTT. The tent fits perfectly between the doors (with the doors open). Speak to Conor at Camp Kings Industries. He's right across all of the measurements and can help out with mounting options.

That looks like a great setup for outdoor adventures. Are the gas struts lockable to prevent accidental folding? I would be vary of sleeping under say 40kg lid...

Hi Andrew, informative clip. Like Adam G, I am also interested in how your RTT was mounted. Looks like the RTT mounting rails weren't used, instead, the attaching hardware was mounted directly from the canopy roof rack nut runner channels to new holes drilled into the bottom of RTT. Orange spacers provide the clearance for the RTT mounting rails. After 12 months how is everything holding up?

nice review have you packed it in in the wet? does it wet the bedding?
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 3 года назад
Cheers Stefan, thanks for popping by and checking out the video. I've packing it up twice now in the wet, and you do have to be careful with the bedding. I've found that it helps to zip up all the windows and doors. This dramatically reducing the amount of moister that gets into the bedding. With a quick air out the next day, you'll be good to go. I've been impressed with how quick the tent dries. Thanks again mate, loving your channel, very helpful!

Hi Andrew, really good review mate. I purchased the Camp King 12 months ago, just before Covid19. What with other commitments and motorbike trips. I haven't had the chance to use it. I previously had a Kings Kwicky, which are okey until they crack up ( 2 within 12 months). I have a problem with the C K that it seem to get moisture in it which then makes the bedding go mouldy. Not sure if it's due to a leak somewhere or condensation. Have you had any problems with damp inside. I live on the NSW Central Coast so rainfall is higher than WA. I have even installed a lowline whirly vent, but still find damp when opening. Your thought would be much appreciated. Cheers DJ
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 3 года назад
hi Dave, so I've had this RTT in a range of conditions, from dry heat, to cool and wet to hot and humid. I've never had any issues with inside getting any moisture in it when the tent is closed. It's permanently on my car, sitting in the driveway and it had about 90mm of rain in November, half of that was in about 4 days and not a drop made it inside. When I'm using it and it's open up, it had moisture from the humidity settle on the canvas and condensation when the night are cold, just from me breathing inside the tent. That's going to happen with any tent, even my hiking tent is drenched in the morning from this. If you close the RTT up when the canvas a just a little damp the dampness with go through out your bedding inside. A RTT can be much harder to dry because it has to be left on and it's attached to your car. However, I do everything I can to ensure it's as dry as possible. The worse it's ever been was when I went up to the Kimberley and the tent would be saturated in the morning with the near 90+% humidity. I'd leave it up as long as I could in the morning (some mornings we were up and on the road by 4:30am. When we reached our next destination, I'd open the tent back up (a matter of a few seconds) and let it dry. This is what I'd do with any tent, particularly canvas. Getting in to this practice, I haven't had any issues with dampness or mould inside. One other thing I do is regularly remove the bedding and put it out the air, again just good practice to get into, I used to do that with my camper trailer as well. Hope this helps mate! 👍

Hi Andrew, I'm in the market for a RTT and have shortlisted three candidates.. this Camp King, a James Baroud or iKamper. Curious to know if you'd considered any of these in your research and if so why you chose to go with the Camp King?
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 3 года назад
Hi Josh, I did consider these RTTs. I hired a Ute for a week that had a James Baroud tent and found it wasn't that easy to close. The version that's similar to this shape actually opens at the short end over the cab as well as the high end. It required two people to close which just didn't suit my solo travels. I looked at the iKamper, the version that opened to the side. To be honest there seemed to be too much fuss set up the door. I'm not a fan of style use the metal rods as springs to keep the cover over the door up. They'll just flap too much in the wind. The poles used for the Camp Kings is rigid and doesn't flap in the wind. The JB and iKamper are lighter, but the extra weight didn't worry me and hasn't been an issue. Finally the Camp Kings is Australian made, high quality...couldn't be happier!
