UPDATE: I always thought to myself like man, I can't be the only one going through this, and I was right. Since making this video I have realized a lot about myself and I'll share with you what I've found in hopes that it may help some of you. In short, I don't think this is a thumb placement issue after all. The reason I say that is look at players such as Dawsoar, Mutex, Kxpture , Shottzy and Punchgoesbig. Go watch their handcam videos. Every single one of them has a completely different thumb stick placement, the only constant variable is that they play claw and all play with Playstation controllers. I have tried just about everything I possibly can to get that "smooth/fine" aim that they all have. I have switched to a Playstation controller, I learned to play claw, I tried at least 20 hours on each and every one of these players' thumb placement and how they hold their controller. While doing all of this I had days where I felt like I was the best player in the world and I had a shot of going pro. However most days brought incredibly little consistency, one game i would be amazing and the game after I would be ass. This inconsistency just grew and grew and got to a point where even when my aim was really solid, I would still be overanalyzing my hands on my controller and constantly comparing it to the guys I was trying to become. I used to be a really solid player, I probably could've made something special out of my skills if I never got sucked down this rabbit hole. I still have the ego from when I was great, but my skills now can't keep up and it just leads to this terrible loop of low self worth. My best advice for anyone dealing with something similar is to weigh your options. I think for most people you have three options to choose from. You can either cut your losses and move on like I am, you can find a specific role such as trying to become the best AR/sub player you can be and stick to that role and only that role, or you simply just have to put your ego aside and accept that you are not as good as some of these guys and just admire their gameplay. I have no idea what got me into this mess but I'm going to take this as a sign that video games just aren't for me. You are in control and you have to decide for yourself what you are comfortable doing. I'm sorry I couldn't figure this out for you guys but if one of you manages to find something that I couldn't, please don't hesitate to share. I'll still be here to answer questions or talk should anyone be interested. Best of luck my guys.

@@ernesto7709 hell yeah dude. I was so deep in this mess that when I tried to go back to my natural ways I completely forgot what they were. I guess some people’s thumbs naturally lay on the controller in a way that gives them better aim than others. I’m glad you didn’t get sucked down the rabbit hole like I did lol.

@@doomsdayguy1381 First thank you for the video and being open about your challenges with trying to find what works. I'm older (in my late 40s) so I'm well aware that my Unreal Tournament and Quake deathmatch glory days are far in the past LOL. I play a lot of Fortnite BR because I love the challenge that the building mechanics brings, and just aim on controller in general (I was a KBM player in the old days). Accepting that there is some level of talent that goes into this is a changing moment. Not to say the pros don't practice their asses off, I KNOW they do. But there's level to this stuff! That said, I think it's normal to see some variance in what works. While the controllers only come in a finite set of variations, Xbox vs Playstation, paddles, claw, stick extenders etc. Peoples shape and size of hands and dexterity varies a LOT more. So, what works for you, based on your own physical makeup, will likely dictate your thumb positioning. I'm going to try your thumb position, because I feel that sometimes my small movements are sometimes way exaggerated. And that's a mix of thumb placement and sensitivity and finding the right mix. I could see how having your thumb lower down could give you more fine motor control. Especially if you have say, longer thumbs.
@WillGrahamCHNL
@WillGrahamCHNL Год назад
@doomsdayguy I have been studying hand anatomy and biomechanics related to joystick manipulation for the past year. You are right, some players are just more gifted with a controller even if they are not using it optimally, just like some Fortnite players are amazing with sub optimal binds and some golfers are amazing with sub optimal grip or swing mechanics. But in terms of the proper way to use a joystick based on hand anatomy and biomechanics for maximum control and consistency you need to make sure you are doing 2 things: 1. DIP joint of the thumb (top thumb joint) should be bent. When this joint is bent you have stored up potential energy in the muscles and tendons around your thumb that you can convert to energy on the joystick quickly and precisely. But, as you have observed, many players get away with a straight or locked thumb because they learned how to play on a controller when they were younger and their thumb wasn't long enough to properly manipulate the joystick - and they just got used to it. 2. The tip of your thumb, the part of your thumb you use to mash an ant, should be "glued" to the top of the joystick. Mechanics principles state that the closer you are to the end of a lever, the more control you have over the load's movement. In this case the thumb is the lever and the joystick is the load. if you are forced to control the joystick from its outer edge, using the part below your thumb print, you are going to be less consistent in the long run because this is sub optimal based on biomechanics. Anatomy-wise the tip of the thumb has the highest concentration of tactile receptors, which makes it very sensitive to touch and capable of fine motor control - you want this part of the thumb to be in contact with the center of the joystick for optimal control at all times. "Keep the ant mashed" Of course there are many other variables to consider - everyone has different hand sizes and learned to manipulate the controls at different ages. But if you could create a pro gamer from scratch and have him/her leverage thumb anatomy and biomechanics to the fullest, you would want to follow those two "rules of thumb" :)

I actually use the same grip that you are speaking about in the video of the player using a "straight thumb". I play apex legends and realized it was easier to aim by "shifting" my whole hand than trying to pinpoint aim with the tip of my thumb. Kind of like when you write with a pencil, you don't just use your fingertips, but your whole hand. It's more like I pull my joystick instead of pushing it with my thumb tip. I feel like it helps prevent repetitive strain injuries

Let me just say.. this video is like a gift from god or something. Preface: I have shot well over 100k bots on MW on Claw (I shoot 1000 a day,). I have the muscle memory for centering my cross hair quickly across different POIs HOWEVER, my shot looked a bit shaky, (not my centering or ability to flick, but the actual SHOT) until.. I found this damn video My conclusion is as a claw player, the reason why it's so precise is because you move "slightly" slower / more controlled since ur thumb is straighter / less range of motion, but also helps control the recoil significantly because of the thumb placement. A lot of guns have vertical recoil, and I feel this just kind of eliminates the recoil in a subtle way. I am not doing anything different except shooting and my recoil control was way, way better. This also made my centering more precise since it did feel "slower" than when I had a slight curve with claw. Anyways, you earned a sub for lowkey changing my call of duty life.

This is similar to my evolution of using a mouse and keyboard on pc. At first I was using all wrist movement but there's less range of motion and my motion is too jittery and less precise. When using more arm movement instead I got a good amount better. Similar to what this video talks about, using less thumbtip movement and more whole thumb movement.

Bro man I have never related to someone so much. For the past few months I keep changing my thumb placement and I play claw. It's weird sometimes I would play with my finger bent and sometimes flat like this. I have been over thinking so much. I have been watching so many handcams of pro players and analyzing them carefully. Thanks for this video also it is no coincidence that none of the aiming videos go over thumb placement.
@doomsdayguy1381
@doomsdayguy1381 2 года назад
I know exactly how you feel dude, it sucks. I believe I finally hit my skill ceiling and that is what motivated me to really start looking into the fine details like thumb placement. While this video is a good baseline, I have done a lot more testing and I will make another video on it shortly. The main pattern I'm seeing is a firm grip while maintaining full motion of the thumbstick. Focus on finding a grip that allows you to be able to sharply look left and right, and up and down without your thumb slipping off. I used to think it was Mutex's grip that only allowed this, but I'm finding other players like Kxpture and Dawsoar who also play claw, and have completely different thumb placements yet they all have very similar movement. What really helped me is bending my right thumb to the left instead of laying it flat on the thumbstick. It almost gave it like a suction effect and that's given me way more grip. My next video will go over all of this more. You're absolutely right about this being no coincidence, I'm going to bring light to a lot of topics like this so that people don't have to overthink in their heads alone like we did because it is hell lol, especially when there's literally nothing online to help.
@0mGFaiL5
@0mGFaiL5 2 года назад
@@doomsdayguy1381 dude have also been experimenting and I think one of the major factors is something that u mentioned in your video and it has to do with how tightly you grip your controller. Like the palm of your hand is loose enough to give you thumb full range of motion without bending. Also you know what's weird the night I saw your video I felt like I had aimbot. But my overthinking and over analyzing of thumb placement is making me worse cuz I can't seem to replicate it at times. I look forward to your next video 😀

The right stick on the xbox controller should be where the XYAB buttons are. This would allow for a neutral thumb position (like on the left stick), more comfort and control. It would also allow people to easily aim with the tip of the thumb resting naturally on the stick cap, instead of having to extend their thumb sideways in an unnatural position. This is the biggest design flaw in all controllers, Sony or MS. Well, MS got it half-right with their left stick placement.

Another aim tip is to always be strafing no matter the situation. Even super long range. In every CoD (as far as I know), Rotational aim assist (which slightly tracks your opponent) doesn't function if you're not moving. And you only have to move very, very slightly to get RAA. Lot of people don't realize this because it's not explained by devs, and because it kinda goes against instinct in some situations - if you're trying to be super precise you'd think being still would benefit more. Your accuracy will skyrocket once you get it down.

I will add to this: if you are planted in a corner waiting for an enemy to push a certain location, pull your left stick BACK and LEFT against the wall. This also triggers aim assist even though you are not actually moving.

Dynamic for good players that have a good tracking if you move your thumb stick it acsetly go to what % you moved dynamic (recomended) lineal for accurate players and instantly goes from 0 % to 25 or 50 or whatever you move it at what % standard is like slower then dynamic this is just my thinking
@doomsdayguy1381
@doomsdayguy1381 Год назад
Yeah perfectly said. However I will add that from my own experience with linear, it takes almost perfection to keep up at a high level. I would get fatigued quickly and not be able to keep up at a high level after long sessions of like over an hour and a half. Dynamic just gives you room to breathe and make minor mistakes and can make up for missed shots better than linear can, in my opinion. I really did love linear but man I had to really play lights out to win gun-fights against really sweaty players in 1v1s.

Can you make a video about what setting you have on your elite controller like are you on default, delayed, aggressive, instant, smooth. This is for the thumb sticks. I am currently on instant and can definitely tell my sticks feel more responsive/ faster. I would also like to know what dead zone your tiggers are on. And I’m also wondering what sensitivity you play on? Just curious. Thanks!

I thought I figured it out in this video but it really is how you hold your controller. The thumb placement afterwards comes naturally, unless you are trying to mimic someone else's specific thumb placement. The problem is it's not easy to find or switch to the right way to hold your controller, especially if you've been holding it a certain way for a long time like I have. I saw your video, I'll have an updated video soon that will solve this issue for sure. I'm just waiting for my new headset wire to come in.

Then I figured it out and it was how they hold their controller but was never able to figure it out consistently. Since how like you mentioned where use to holding it a certain way so when you try and switch it up it's hard to get back to holding it that way every time since you will tend to go back to your normal way. It depends on ur hand size. U gotta play around with moving ur thumb either higher or lower so its more horizontal or less horizontal basically. My other video talks about it more. Hey man, im from germany so sry for my english😅 i had this problem so many years, i always change my thumb my sensitivity, but also my internet is not the best, and my Hz from my Monitor is not the best, then i thought so much about deadzone beacuse i feel more comfortable when the deadzone is lower because it feels more natural, but sometimes on the right stick a little bit higher feels a little bit precise, but back to the thumb question😅 im 29 i have no big hands, my hands more like small or medium, and my thumb or my fingers are little bit "fat" my thumb is not that flat like normal thumbs, and im sweating much when i hold something in my hand, always i think thats the reason because sometimes when my hand is not sweating i feel like im glue on the stick and it gaves me so much more accuracy, i always made my thumb straight on the stick, that the middle of my thumb is on the stick and i touch it very slowly, but it not feels natural when i go away from the stick to press x or something, than i go back without looking and i mean this is the natural way everyone is holding his controller, but i think everybody in this world can achieve everything when he is willing to work hard for it, because whe are our on prison when our mind is blocking! I want to send you a picture of how im holding my controller and that you can see my hand and my thumbs, this is why i never get better i always changing, everyday like 6 or 7 times, but sometimes i see how good kids or teenagers are in COD and the most of them have no bigger hands than me, and there all good, maybe my thumb is to "fat" my thumb is not large or anything like that but it has more mass on it like everyone else's thumb, please help me, im playing cod since i was 16, for 13 years now, not every year, but i know how to play, my biggest wish is to know how to hold my thumb and then i never had to think again about that, and can put all my energy in sensitivity, deadzone, movement, game intelligence and so on, thank you brother please answer me i love you and your videos, keep up your an awesome player❤❤❤❤

I agree, when I was using the elite series 2 I was basically strangling it. The key is to keep your palm of your thumb off the side of the controller, dont apply pressure there. Use the knuckle in your index finger's palm to grip the right side of the controller.
