i eat bread 2 ~ use those chalky cake watercolors to plop color all over the blank pages of your journal, let them dry, and journal over them. It’s joyous 🥰
I bought crystal clear cups at the dollar store (2 for a dollar! who needs expensive water cups? lol), and literally almost drank my rinse water last night. the really bad part? my actual drink was in a bottle, on the floor next to me, so I could avoid the inevitable... obviously I still failed 😂
I use honey based colours my grandma brings me every year (she lives in russia) lol and my school has the chalky cake ones and I rmbr my teacher going "how'd you manage to make it seem vibrant, what kind of colours do you use" and I showed her the colours and she was like "we have to increase budget for art and get these at least for the grad classes" and that's how I got my school to spend more money on art supplies heheh
When I was younger, I had tube watercolour paint, and I wasyed so much paint by using it like gouache. Now I am starting again after decades of not painting for decades, and the pan colours suit me better.
Watercolor used to frustrate me to the point of tears, but after seeing your stuff, I want to try it again! I had NO idea that snapback was even a thing and I’ve always relied on the multi-purpose packs of brushes because I didn’t know any better. Thank you so much for the funny, easy-to-follow advice!
I’m an intermediate watercolor artist so I felt like I knew most things about watercolor. I often find myself watching these kinds of videos just to see if I’m missing anything... and oh my goodness this is an in depth intro to watercolor and definitely did not know A LOT of things in this video, thank you for providing the resources to those who are just starting out!
I like to do this too! It's fun to find little tips, but even if you don't it's just nice to hear people talk about art. Sometimes the comments are even more fun than the videos too, I love seeing all these young artists getting so excited about figuring out new things.
Sonic Cookie haha me too:) i’d also say in an intermediate watercolor artist, i know quite a bit however i still watch these videos for fun. sometimes it just motivates me. i work in a lot of different media’s and sometimes i just run on creativity E
I am a beginner-ish watercolor ‘artist’. -ish suffix cause I have been using watercolor since I was in fourth grade, but never got into it until recently. We had a art teacher who was pretty decent at his job, but I never learnt anything until I saw this video. I do watch a lot of stuff about watercolor, but never was anything more clearly explained.
I used to use the cheap chalky ones and I thought they were fine, but recently I saved up for a really nice pallet, and I tell you it's so much better. I have friends who have tried my pallet and still swear by their chalky ones. And I would much rather use a chalky cake than a gummy one. However, I find color pay off is much better on the less chalky pallets, and they tend to last longer.
This is helpful. It's hard to find videos for absolute beginners. Even when it says it's for beginners, they still expect you to have a good amount of skill that a beginner wouldn't have. I honestly never thought about how snappy my brushes were.
I started drawing a few weeks back everyday and it shocked me how much I improved over just a few weeks. I couldn’t draw at all and now as I work thru my sketching practice books, my lines are suddenly straight and it’s so much easier for me to duplicate what the book tells me to draw. It’s really amazing!
Here’s my first watercolor 101! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m-le8Ca0H30.html Hey guys! Please don't take it personally if you've got watercolor cakes or brushes that work for you. I'm not saying don't ever use these things ever (except I really am NOT partial to watercolor cakes, but if they work for you!) I'm just saying *If you are struggling with your watercolor paintings, consider switching to these items*. I'm not trying to "make fun" or "put down" people who may not be able to afford to upgrade. If it works, USE IT GIRL! Don't worry about what anyone says! Some of these are just tips to help make your watercolor journey a bit easier, not to make you fee bad about your supplies. You can create art with ANYTHING! I have listed affordable alternative for the watercolors in the video, as low as $6. Brushes are a bit harder because YES, they can be expensive, but my recommendations for brushes are the Princeton 4050R for High Snap and the Black Velvet Silver Watercolor Brushes for Low Snap. If you work small, try getting a 4 and an 6, and if you work big, get a 10 and a 12 and a big, flat, fluffy brush for large washes. The Princeton Neptune series is also great!
You've literally been the only artist I've felt so similar to as a fellow artist...and I've been in a dark place for many years which has left my sketchbooks to gather dust. So, I'm grateful for your videos because they are the only I've found that share my passion and my sense of humor. Keep it up gurl and I hope to be getting back into my art more consistently. Thank you
Protip: If you want to have a beverage (water, cola, juice, coffee, tea) on your desk while you paint and not accidentally drink your nasty water, use cups with lids for your beverages (optional: straws) so they are a different shape than your brush water.
you will certainly want sodas to be kept in something sealed, because you might not notice, but the fizz actually has ridiculously massive range as it's popping out of your can/ cup/ whatever and gets all over things. keep this in mind around computer equipment as well, many people have sticky keys in their keyboard for this reason without realizing why.
I put my nasty water in a high, transparent jug, my clean water in a low glass and my beverage in a One Of A Kind unicorn mug, raised on a high coaster. Don't want to mix any of those up :D
So happy and proud to hear you mention 'White Nights' watercolors (as someone from Russia) :) They are really great for both beginners and pretty advanced painters. Ever since my architectural education, they are still my favourite, even though I sucked at painting then :)
For the european pals out there or just in general some alternatives you may also find: As for student grade watercolors I can suggest the Talens Van Gogh ones and the Sakura koi ones (Tiny bit more chalky but still great for a student grade watercolors) As for paper: Hahnemühle is great, I personally use Hahnemühle britannia, 300gsm, it bears a lot of water and soaks paints in like a charm, also Fabriano 300gsm watercolor paper is great. (But not the mixed media one. That shit's water repellent...) Also brushes: on da German amazon there is a 12 set of brushes called Mudder, have had them for months, they never shed, hold a lot of water and are damn cheap! Great for beginners definitely. Just thought I'd share some more alternatives. :D
Ohh btw are you also from Hungary?😃 (Ha igen akkor sziaa, nem gondoltam volna, hogy ennél a videónál pont egy magyar kommentelő tippjeit találom majd😁)
I just started watercolor and I am really bad. Like, I have no self esteem when it comes to art because I was denied a spot in an art program, which wouldn't have bothered me too much, but I followed all the guidlines. And a person I know loosely followed them and didn't even color them and he got in. That sort of made me say "Well, if I didn't make it in and they did, I must really suck" Now I'm getting back into art and I am very bad, but it's so relaxing for me which helps with stress from school. That's why this video came out at a great time for me. Also, I thank Piper Sweeny for telling me about your channel.
maybe you going to harsh on yourself? try simple things first. like a apple and practice till you got a satisfying result? and move on from there.. watercolor is a skill you need to learn. or try a watercolor color book.. the drawings are already in there and you can focus on watercolor effects. if you love it keep doing it no matter what. that you weren't picked for that art program doesn't say anything. you will get there if you hold on to it. just have fun.
Skipped over by an art program for someone who "only loosely followed guidelines, and didn't even bother coloring in"... hmmm... I'd suggest (right off the top of my head) that since you followed those guidelines astringently, this selection process suggests that it simply was NOT an art program for you. You are better off without that... Let me elaborate (just a little)... I'm a precise kind of person, often described as "meticulous to the N'th degree", so things like geology, robotics, and mechanical engineering are "fun" for me as hobbies. I like to derive humor from very precisely following instruction as written, but finding clever ways to create results the instructor never intended... (some might suggest I'm an ass) BUT as a precise person, I like to understand RIGHT UP FRONT, exactly what's expected, or being taught. I like to KNOW rather than question what the "rules" are about. Astringently following the guidelines and doing your part, in this art program entry, I submit, you are much like me in this respect. AND it should reflect in your work, regardless of particular "skill" or "quality" the care with which you followed all instructions and guides as intended, should show... BUT they didn't seem too interested in that. Whatever the program was selecting was NOT intense about following guides, reading or paying attention to rules, except possibly in risk taken with liberal chances at "almost but not quite exactly" breaking them... A class that offers rules or guides simply for the students to cherry pick and break them is NOT a class I'd care to be in. Frankly, it's not a program I'd derive much credibility from, either. SO if "getting cavalier" or "slacking" is how someone else got into the program, then you (being a precision oriented person) would probably have suffered something like a "blown head gasket" for even being accidentally included. Finally, this certainly shouldn't have taken away anything from your love of art or craft. Flat out, "F*** 'em!" (and/or "Joke 'em if they can't take a F***.") Lots of skills have been picked up purely for the love of the process, experimentation, fascination with the medium at hand... Relax, enjoy, and take the journey... The worst that can happen is some rather expensive personal growth, but the growth part is actually priceless... so what a bargain! ;o)
@@recoveringsoul755 Now that you've mentioned it, I might try using pencil for my next projects since watercolor still looks beautiful even without the pen lines
@@recoveringsoul755 It's pretty ok to use them that way, I've seen a lot of urban watercolor pocket art Edit: for those who were confused of the term "pocket art", I meant art made by artists while traveling, also I read a book about it and the title was "*Urban watercolor sketching*" by Felix Scheinberger & Vertag Hermann
I am a beginner for watercolor and will definitely binge watch all your videos. I just love your vlogging tone. It feels like my best friend is teaching me all this kinds of sorts and i am living for it! Thank you! 💖
My son and I love watching/listening to you! (He is 18). You are brutally honest and make us laugh too. You are 100% the reason I have the entire line of White Nights:)
If you're having problems with control or what to paint try Chinese painting and inks it can really help you free up and learn how to not focus on details as much. It made me give up on alot of paintings doing layer after layer as a beginner.
@@marietate7879 Ohuhu or Pentel water brushes. Princeton Neptune or Princeton watercolor brushes. Plaid brand watercolor brushes if you're a complete beginner & don't want to spend a lot just yet. Ink: Daler-Rowney; Liquitex acrylic inks; Winsor Newton Drawing Ink & calligraphy/watercolor ink; & Dr Ph Martin Matte Black India Ink & Dr Ph Martin HYDRUS watercolor ink, watercolor concentrate, & calligraphy ink are all good & relatively affordable. Also Higgins Ink especially for practice, in my opinion. Paper: Strathmore pre-cut sheets or sketchbooks or sketchpads are all good. XL watercolor paper for practice is good Also, you can use very inexpensive paper for the sketching & brainstorming process, & when you've decided exactly what you are wanting to do, you can transfer the line-art to the more "fancy" paper. They have tracing paper & transfer paper in several colors for different uses. It's similar to using layers in Photoshop digital Illustration & artworks.
I've been despairing over my art being basic and boring anime fanart but I've been binge watching your videos for like a week, and I was reminded of the time I was 13-14 and drew E V E R Y T H I N G with one single blue ballpoint pen and just didn't stress about any of my mistakes... I got up, bought a pack of colored ballpoint pens for 2€ and started a new sketchbook that is already looking so much better and more COLORFUL than anything else that I've done in traditional media in, like, years, even though I'm still just doing anime fanart (because that's what makes me happy)?? AaaaaaaAAAAAaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (Copics and watercolors over ballpoint pen? BOMB AF)
I’ve learned some of these before with my Art classes in high school, like the whole watering the paper But this makes everything more clear, and it could’ve come in my side bar at a good time~ Honestly, watching you and doing those watercolor pieces made me wanna try that as well, and hopefully my local art stores have these things (including the right paper)
I used to do that too and I thought "hey this is fine I dont need to spend money on watercolors" but OH BOY I got some a week ago and it's life changing!!! a cheap set that works really well is the Prima brand! they are on amazon prime and the Tropicals set (the one I have) is only like 16 bucks! Although it is a travel set, it is extremely pigmented so you wont waste any :) I hope this helps but yeah!!!! real watercolors are life changing!! 🤗
Omg I've watched her video for 5 whole seconds and I love her already. Some ppl just have that personality that draws you in. And she knows her shit so that's a huge bonus.
Thank you. Really helpful. I started watercolour classes just before the lock down here. I got 3 lessons before everything was closed down. I'm practicing every day what I've been taught and trying things I've seen on videos and tutorials.
I've been using those exact cheap watercolors for years (cause thats all i could afford) and honestly after using them for a while I actually found a lot of ways to get them to work like student quality (yeah not quite artist lol) watercolors.
YES YES YES!!!!!! I LOVE pro art supplies, but I still use low end and even children's art supplies because squeezing magical results out of them is an artistic challenge in and of itself!!!
I like drawing girls and sexy cosplayers, i'm a 26 y/o woman. My best friend of 20years has a boyfriend who treats me poorly every time we see each other/avoids me. So, naturally, while drinking together once, I question him on why he's so cold. He said, "As a professional artist, I just can't approve of you drawing boobs." He's a graphic designer at a shop, I draw for fun and some commissions. I questioned, "You found my acc from the pretty girls posting my art of them, right?" "Yes" "So you follow accounts posting said boobs n such, right?" " Yes" "But there's a problem when I draw said boobs in my free time and happen to make a little extra money doing what I enjoy, which you also enjoy?" "Yes" I appreciate this video. Who cares what people think as long as you're happy with what you create... ;o; ♥
"I'll draw not-boobs if you pay me to draw not-boobs"? But really, some people are just looking for things to be offended by. He'll probably stroll into a museum and complain about all the boobs there. Or an FKK beach.
@@elegantruin No, there are actual male feminists (ie: people wanting equality for both genders, in all aspects), this was probably some brand of Tumblrina.
@@teaartist6455 I know there are Male feminists but there are also men who pretend be feminist while not actually having any respect or care about women's rights or equality.
@@elegantruin I'd consider those that try to police peoples art, language and so on as tublrinas rather than normal pretend feminists. Even female tumblrinas will make up issues and nit pick things to be offended about and to feel like they are right in telling others how to behave, what to create and ho to speak.
Ohmygod, the kneaded erasers tip! I was wondering why my drawings always looked so patchy and yuck! I just ordered some from Amazon, I can't wait until they arrive so I can see the difference! And also thanks for that 'brush in one direction' tip, my brush strokes are so visible. I'm really hoping that these tips really help with the real brush pens I have from Arteza! :D Edit: And holy crap! I've been using regular ol' mechanical pencils to do my sketches! 😂 So glad you made this video!
QuietBEGalaxy Mechanical pencils are okay! Just check what kind of lead you’re using! I use 0.5mm HB lead and lighten with my kneaded eraser. Or i will use 0.5mm 2H lead if I’m tracing something with the light board into watercolor paper.
I remember when I would watch Kasey Golden and think watercolor is going to be my main medium, without even trying them. Then I got tubed water colors and just used it without water which is really stupid of me. But now I kind of know how to use watercolors. With my low snap brushes and I do try and go hammy and cheese on my paper. Thank you for the tips.
Is it weird I like the effects of the cheap paints and the cheap paper? I have expensive professional paints and papers as well but I often break out the cheap ones because I WANT that thicker chalked texture and that washy blobby texture of cheap paper. Like it can be bad sometimes sure but once you understand them, they can be so fun too. I have both fifty cent and forty dollar half pans in my watercolour kit and I still like using both probably daily equally. I just sometimes don't WANT that super creamy super condensed pigment. I want a light chalky wash. Maybe I'm odd Idk.
Dear Emily, i can't stress it enough but I DO LOVE your videos, you make me laugh, you cheer me up, you inspire me and most importantly, you teach me drawing! I adore what you are doing! You are one of my favourite channels, so thanks a lot, and also what does it mean " I'm not there yet" what the F, you're not only there, you're even way further 🤷🏼♀️ You're a legend 💪
Sitting here with my Crayola, Mechanical Pencil, and Printer Paper: 😅😅😅🙂🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃 Update: my school bought me and my class supplies so my lucky self is moving onward 🤸🏾♂️
My parents really love to control my art 😪 every time I draw someone famous like kpop groups and others my parents be like “stop drawing them draw that or that and bluhbdhdhdhfh” like I hate it when they tell me what to draw/not draw 😑😤
the 5th thing I attempted to paint with my Prang on mixed media paper was a landscape scene. Sent a picture to a couple of people And one wrote back "draw more people". What? I don't have any "people" to look at and trees don't yell at me, boulders don't criticize me, streams don't tell me what to do. They have no idea how hard faces, hands feet bodies are. I can mess up a boulder and it still looks like a rock, instead of a face with an eye missing or the chin in the wrong place.
@@safala Well, I've only done it once. Was afraid to try but following a tutorial. I was thinking there is no way this is going to work (in watercolor) and it looked pretty wonky. Until I lifted out some of the color inside the edges of the rock and it suddenly became 3D.
OH MY GOSH!!!! Thank you so much! I've recently started dabbling with water coloring, and have been soooo frustrated with certain things not working out like I think they should. Your video cleared up a few things for me and I can't wait to give them a try tonight!
You are so kind, i didn't even realize i was waching this video for 14 mins. It seemed so short. Your personality is so wonderful! Thanks for the tutorial, it helped a lot!

Emily, THANK YOU , THANK YOU, THANK YOU. This is information I needed SOOO MUCH! I only wish I had known it BEFORE I WASTED MONEY ON SHIT ITEMS! Not your fault, purely my own. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your channel. Your use of normal, natural 'everyone useds it' language is soo refreshing. No one has the balls, except you, to be utterly unpretentious on YT. What's with that? Thank you again hun. I have literally learned so much from your videos and will always be your ga n hun. God bless you and da babes, and your hubby. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do in your next video honey. Love you. Byeeeeeeeee ;)
I hope you don't mind my chiming in, but DON"T RULE OUT CRAPPY SUPPLIES!!!! Low end supplies are a challenge, but the rewards of coaxing great results out of them is FABULOUS!!! I love high end paints and brushes, but messing with low-end supplies is like an intensely stimulating game of chess. Woo!
Hi Karla, thanks for your comment, and I agree with you about messing about with crappy supplies. I bought what seemed to be great supplies on Amazon in the beginning when I first started out in art basically because they were cheap, but when they arrived they were just like coloured chalk in the pans, and the tubes were dismal to work with as they were seriously cheap quality. Sadly I didnt know better. I use them to play painting with my 3yr old granddaughter, she loves them and playing with her with them is a lot of fun. She is a next generation artist in the making. She discovered the art of mixing colours a few days ago, I didn't tell her anything about it, as I wanted it to be a surprise, I wish you could have seen her face. It was awesome. :) So yes, we do enjoy playing with the poor quality paints and terrible brushes. I learn something new every day by using them. Now I am saving my money for better supplies and I am keeping the cheap stuff to learn from and encourage my grandchild with. Thanks again for your comment.
@@carlycharlesworth1497 Watching kid's discover art is the most adorable thing EVER! Their enthusiasm is so pure. Better supplies definitely have their perks - NO question about that! I'm not immune to the allure of pricey, high quality pigments. Magical. Balance is great, using higher end brushes with crap paints is a challenge in and of itself. Thats the beauty of art - experimentation with EVERYTHING! Good luck to you and your granddaughter on your artsy journeys
Wow. I’m super early. I love your videos Emily. I’ve been following your channel for years now and have felt every milestone along the way. Keep up the great work and don’t you ever change cause you’re awesome.
I watch her videos like randomly. Not even follow the recent and all but really idk if i did said this in other video months ago or few weeks ago idk when i did watch it. I gotta say i dont understand why she didn't reach 1 million subs yet. She really do deserve it better yet more than that. Such genuine person.
Thank you for the tips and also the last part of the video with your message. I've repressed my love of art a lot because of my family and I haven't practised what I love for ages because they don't like me doing it. I think it's time to realise life's too short to be worried about their opinion, or about if I'm wasting time. I've found this and other watercolour videos and I'm going to give it a go. Thank you, have a lovely colourful day
Awesome! I'm planning to do that this month too!! Is Skillshare WHOLLY aimed at creative/art/craft type lessons/classes? Or do they do a lot of things of all kinds & types?? Have you ever tried Craftsy?? I really want to sign up with them, too. They have a great reputation as well. Like Skillshare, but SPECIFICALLY for art/crafts/creaitive related. I'm in search of ones that are considered the best. Skillshare & Craftsy are the ones I know for SURE, at the moment. Plus Udemy, etc. 😊❤️ Also, congratulations!! I'm glad you were able to use the code to sign up.. I really hope you enjoy it, learn a lot, & have fun!!
I love the advice at the end. I would love to just paint what I wanna paint. But it's just not the case in the architecture world. I just have to keep pushing to be good 😭 But I love architecture. I get to create what people want that's efficient, beneficial, safe, and revolutionary!
I learned more about watercolors watching this video than the next 9 best videos I've watched put together. You remembered that being a beginner means YOU DON'T KNOW A F*CKING THING. Seems like a lot of very nice folks assume that I know more than I do. The tip on wetting my paints first was the sun rising in the morning and then exploding into a supernova kind of revelation. Never seen it mentioned anywhere else. THANK YOU! I can hardly wait to watch more of your stuff.
I am starting to learn watercolors. When I stumbled upon your videos, I just learned that I am using the wrong brush type :D Your video is not only educational, but also fun. I love it!
OMG!!!...I found this video while trying to learn how to use my gift of water color paint and pencils and I JUST LOVE THIS VIDEO AND NARRATIVE! Informative and entertaining. I am now a subscriber and happy for it.
