I ended up building a acrylic box that sits on top of the tank with a ramp going into the water used green turf from home Depot to look like grass. Looks amazing

I agree with you! When I first bought my turtle, and he was very small, I bought him a floating basking area. At first it was alright, but Voldetort (my turtle) was growing bigger everyday and the basking area couldn't fully support him without partly sinking. Plus, I had upgraded my tank and the shape of the floating area didn't suite the shape of my tank (I keep him in a plastic container). So, I decided to build my own! It's similar to the one you've build with PVC tubes, but I put syntethic grass as the base to make it look more natural. So far, he loves it! Voldy it's not fully grown yet, but I made the basking area taking in consideration his future growth. It is helpuf with space as you said, because I can fill the tank with more water and there's more space for the filter, heater ecc. It also makes my "tank" look nicer, because it looks like a little garden! Anyway, I love your videos, they are really helpful: actually, if Voldy has a nice life now it's because of you and because I followed your videos, because I bought him in a shop but of course the people working there didn't tell me what a turtle really needed.

Yessss my turtle had the zoomed basking dock and she got too heavy for it and her belly wasn’t getting dry like it was supposed to. When I noticed I immediately egg crated it out and now she actually can move around on the basking dock and isn’t too big for it. Out of water basking docks are so much better

I have a very strange stinkpot musk. I built an above-tank basking dock out of eggcrate and he uses it daily. 10 years ago I owned a different musk and he never basked. He only came partially out of the water during the night. I love how different the personalities of turtles can be.

Hi! Thank you so much your videos! I’ve been learning a lot from you! I adopted 2 musk turtles recently (apparently 7-8 years old) and I’m still trying to learn about them. Your videos are the best! The previous owners didn’t have a basking lamp, which I bought, and also replaced the UVB bulb that had never been replaced before. I’m trying to create a basking area. I saw several videos about it but I’m still unsure. A video saying that musk turtles usually don’t bask or don’t like over the tank basking area, or that when they have one inside the tank they are more likely to stay in the ramp, never leaving the water (happens to mine, the tank came with a cheap platform, but again, there was never a heat source until now). Which type you recommend? My tank is 1m long and 40cm tall. I was thinking a DIY over the tank with a ramp that goes all the way to the bottom of the tank. Their shells don’t look as great as the ones I see on RU-vid so I’m guessing it could be lack of heat for so many years but just a guess. Thanks a lot!

I have a 5 year old musk turtle that loves it! At first she was weary about it but she basks every day in it in short bursts like 3-5 mins then does it again a shortly after the extra water hasn’t been off for her since I added lots of rocks and shallow water areas for her to scavenge the grounds and have areas where she can chill and breathe but yeah although not common they will use the basking area

Can you please tell me what exact uvb & heat lamp you use about that basking area bc I just bought that exact one but idk what light would be safe to use with it🐢❤️

I own the above tank basking area (I have mixed turtle set up) and my musk turtle loves the basking area and uses it frequently but I believe it depends on the turtle .

I have a piece of Exo Terra foam for landscaping the back of a tank. Its about 15 inches by 10 inches. What are your thoughts on converting it in to a floating dock somehow ??

Any tips on adding something like a textured mat or surface on the ramp going up the basking area? I currently have an in-tank basking area and my turtle often has difficulty going up the ramp because the plastic is smooth.

Hi I was hoping you can help me. I bought the Penn Plax above dock and my female has adjusted quickly to it and was using it with in a day, but my male still has not used it and it's going on a week now . Please help and advise me what to do. Pryor to this I was using the floating dock and they both took it it with in a couple days.

Not sure anyone could reply to this but I recently bought the aquatic turtle uvb and heat lighting kit by zoo med and when I place it on top of my turtles above tank basking area it doesn't fully sit on top of the metal part, is it safe/won't be a problem to be on top of a bit of the plastic?

I notice that your above tank basking area in this video has a piece of wood section on the rim of the tank.I have a 75G, so a store bought above tank is to narrow for my tank. Can you explain how you made yours?

We have three sliders in a 40 gallon tank and just bought the Thrive brand above turtle basking area. Two of them have tried climbing on the ramp but aren’t successful at it. They keep sliding off. Is it too steep and slippery for them or will they get use to it? If too steep/slippery is there anything you recommend to help them out?

It looks like she has the lights just sitting on top of the basking area. I have the same penn-plax basking area and I read that uvb can’t go through plastic and so I’m wondering if that’s true or does it matter?

The above tank basking platform is only for up to 55gallon tanks. My tank is a 70 gallon one. Do you have any recommendations for this size of tank?

I love that you talked about the top basking spot because I’ve always been a little hesitant to get one for my turtle. He’s a map turtle but he’s super skiddish if we walk in announced and he dives right into the water. Do you think an above tank spot would be a bad choice ? Or are the walls high enough so they can’t immediately see you from their spot?

I have a diamond back terrapin and he’s 3 years old I’m just now upgrading his tank I was curious what type of fish you have sharing a tank with yours and if you know if it’s safe to have a pleco in the tank with him also if Caribsea reef sand is safe as a substrate for the bottom of his tank I wanted to get crushed coral but I couldn’t find any :( Ps. What kind of filter do you use?

I’ve had my turtle for 7 days and my other for 5. and I still have not seen either of them bask I’m worried because I know they need to bask to get their uvb light and to dry off I’m starting to think maybe it’s too hot for them? The heat lamp and light both rest on the top of the tank well above 8 inches from the floating basking platform or..they’re just adjusting to the new tank. Any advice? Thank you!

I bought my daughter a turtle when she was a kid & I had to take care of it when she left for college. When I started to do research on how to properly care for a RES I was shocked on how we were doing everything all wrong. Now I keep the turtle the right way & I have the exact same basking area that u have but mine is on a 55 gallon tank. My turtle has gotten so big that she don't fit through the basking area opening anymore. She has a carapace length of 10' inches & 9 ½' inches wide so she's a full grown turtle. I had to cut the plastic opening on my basking area on both sides to make the entrance wider so my turtle would fit. Then I sanded down all the rough areas. Now my turtle fits perfectly through her basking area opening with no problems. Even if she grows another inch or 2 she's still good. She's so big that once she's in her basking area, she only has enough room to turn around. I haven't seen any basking platforms for large adult turtles so that's what I had to do. I also plan on putting my turtle in a 100 gallon or 110 gallon tank bc she's outgrown her 55 gallon tank. BTW, I love your video's so keep up the great work.

I recently got a turtle. We moved his tank and added more water. Since we moved him I haven't seen him go on it. In another video I heard that he might not go on it because I'm in the room, but I've seen him try a few times and it looks like he's struggling to get on. Idk if it's too close to the lamp and he's too hot or if he isn't going on just because I'm watching. I don't know how I could help him I'm wondering if anyone has any advice.

How does your basking area not get too hot with it being that close to it? Mine is about as far as your with a 50w and it’s way too hot 😭

What about basking areas for bigger turtles? My guy is huge the opening of the on top basking area was barely big enough for him and at one point he was stuck.

So I have an African side neck turtle, and I was planning on making him an above tank one, but you mentioned mud turtles might not put in the effort (which is true of him now as it is). Do you think he probably wouldn’t use it?

The RES has transitioned well and has been basking. The male yellow belly slider has been slower to make the transition,and my female YBS has completely refused to go up the ramp. She holds on to the edge of the ramp instead. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I did like the idea of above tank basking area but does this video apply to hatchling or baby Southern Painted turntles and hatchling or baby mississippi map turtles. If their babies will they be able to swim up to the basking area if they are in a 55 gallon tank filled up thats my only concern. Im not sure...help!
