Thanks a lot for this video. It's by far the best S5 setup video I've found for professionals. Just got my new S5 last week for client work and creative projects.
Thanks so much David, really appreciate it! It's all about being able to switch between photo and video quickly for me, so I can appreciate how necessary it is to do it properly :D
@@JoshCameron yes I’m just getting to grips with the settings. Is there any chance you could make a video deep diving into understanding the settings a more in depth review of things and why one would use them. Cheers thanks!
Please don't stop making S5 videos! Just got mine and I have never owned a nice camera before so I don't know what I am doing. Your videos have been a great help!
Please don't stop making S5 videos! Enjoying looking back at some of your older videos at the moment. Quick Q, why shutter mode do you generally find works best for photography?
mechanical and electronic shutter will produce the same quality, but mechanical will always have better rolling shutter control. Electronic shutter is great for street photography, and events that are silent like church weddings, conferences.
Not gunna lie, as a Panasonic gh4 to Gh5, g7 to g9 and now S5 I didn’t know about holding down the button to set……life saver!! Nice one mate, great vid.
Glad you found that tip helpful! It's something that's always overlooked I think, and when I first got the S5 I literally tested EVERYTHING to see what the camera could do - and this turned out to be one of them!
Excellent man, waiting for it, good job on the video, and you also move fast for our request, appreciate that. Now I would like to see some tips and tricks regarding using the camera in manual mode for video, how you use it, and what kind of light do you use for shooting.
@@JoshCameron I'm sure I will. Still very much a beginner but the advice of your channel and others has been invaluable in my selection process resulting in the S5 purchase and also helped me hugely with growing my photography knowledge. Keep it up, your channel is great. 👊
Hey Kenneth! Ah awesome! Really good to know that the algorithm is picking up my videos. Thanks for taking the time to give them a try! Really appreciate the sub 🙌🏼
Safe to say, I now have your videos on repeat as finally took the plunge and ordered an S5. First "proper" camera purchase. Excited, but also nervous 😅
Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. I just got my S5 for a couple of days and I love how many custom modes I can set. Way more than my GH5. :) Keep up the good work my dude!!!
Great video Josh! I'd love to see a deep-dive video (like the one you did for the video settings) for the photo settings, how you use them, how you have all the buttons customised etc, I think it'd be really helpful for people to get a first sort of efficient set up that we can maybe tweak slightly as our preferences change or we adapt it to our particular workflows. Keep up the good work mate, all the love from Scotland!
Every time I see a vid of yours, subbed, I learn more about the camera, I mainly do street photography and I’m learning all the time regarding settings etc, I only have the kit lens as there is no way I can afford the 20-105 that you have, people are looking at my sites and asking me to do shots and shoots for them which is cool, and I’m glad you are there to look and listen to, love yr vids and I have invested in some equipment for future use.... gimbal, studio backdrops and lighting, when shooting stills is there any advantage to a cage?
Hey Josh, love your videos, encouraged me to get the S5. Question. You set the left button to picture profiles. I can't seem to find that in the menu of options to choose. I can only seem to find it in the photo options under "photo styles" but that will only let me choose one specific picture profile to be able to shortcut to? Hopefully, that makes sense!
I had this same problem and just figured it out! When you select photo style and it gives you the extended menu, just select photo style again and then when you use your custom button it should work as a scroll. Hope that helps!
Hey Steve! Hope you find my videos helpful and congrats on your new camera :) The S5 should work with most gimbals that have a max payload of 1.8KG and over (depending of course on how heavy the lens you use is!)
Great Video, I often use my S5 as a hybrid and I am shooting photos and videos at the same event. Is there a setting, which does not change a specific piture profile, when changing from Mode M to Video Mode? Because shooting photos on vlog is very bad, had to learn it the hard way!
Hi Josh! Great production in these vids. You've definitely earned a subscriber. One question - I really enjoy the 4k/60 mode on this camera - is there any way to have the preview show the APS-C crop before recording? Would love it set as a dedicated custom mode. Been messing around but haven't found anything like that
Hey Jaimie, thanks so much mate - really happy you've subbed! As soon as you flip the camera to 4K60 it'll crop in on the Live View anyways, so that's never been an issue for me... However, if you wanted to see the crop BEFORE you flip to 50/60p, there is a function called 'Image Area of Video' that can be accessed in the FN button selection menu :D
Hey, good video. A little quick on the talking forcing me to rewatch it over and over. But I just bought a lumix s5 but I don’t see the master pedestal or the SS gain operation on my menu in image quality. Why is that? Did I get a broken camera?
Hey, thank you for taking the time to watch this video and apologies for the speed I'm talking at! I'm trying to slow my delivery down a lot more now :) You need to do a FW update by the sounds of it! Go to the Panasonic website and check whether you have the latest Firmware :)
Hi Josh , I see you are an expert on s5 which is great!! I wonder why when i shoot photos in RAW they look well exposed in camera but after when i open them in my computer in photoshop or lightroom they are all underexpose? I see on internet a lot of people asking the same but I havent find any solution. I hope you know. :)
Hi Josh, finally an Excellent informative S5 video very much appreciated hopefully more to come. I was concerned at the lack of S5 interest compared to the GH5 & S1H, (and my own lack of interest trying to figure this little Goliath out, old school film experience only) Josh perhaps you could give a little advice, which gimbal do you use or would prefer, perhaps you could recommend a good Sound addition Are you personally using the Atomas Ninja with the S5 ? And you chose the 24 x 105 over the 20 x 60? Any other additions, lenses, adapters you do or don't recommend with the S5 ? Any & all recommendations Gratefully Appreciated. Thanks mate
Hey! Thank you for the lovely words! I use the Zhiyun Crane V1 although I will be updating that very soon to another Zhiyun gimbal. The S5 body is small and light enough however for any gimbal that has a payload of at least 2KG :) I do not use the Atomos Ninja V with the S5. I'm very eager to use the RAW output from the S5 but at the moment it just isn't something that I really need. I would definitely choose the 24-105 over the 20-60 personally, purely because it gives you a tonne more flexibility, OIS and a constant aperture! In terms of adapters, I sometimes use the Sigma MC-21 to adapt the L Mount to an EF mount, and that works fine - but it's rare that I use non native L Mount glass with the S5. I hope this helps!
Fantastic, Thank you Josh for the Great information very helpful much appreciated especially as I'm only just getting back into everything. Look forward to more future videos from you. Cheers mate.
I appreciate all the S5 videos you post....just transitioned from Fuji to Lumix and love the quality so far....Any idea if live view works when a flash remote is on the hot shoe? I've noticed that my S5's live view doesn't work when my Godox flash remote is on and forced flash is set to on in camera. When the flash remote is off - OR - I turn off forced flash in camera, live view comes back on.....so frustrating.
Hi Josh great video can i ask when taking photos how do i set automatic viewing of my images from view to upright as no mater what i do it just doesn't change the images just stay in view mode thanks
Hey Josh, I'm getting "Media Offline" in DaVinci Resolve 18.6 for Mac Ventura OS. There's audio but no video. Filmed on a Lumix S5 in 10bit 422 MOV @ 25p. Any advice on how to fix this? Thanks - B
Hey Josh! as a hybrid shooter if you are in photo mode; are you able to click the video record button and record 4k60 video? or is this disabled because of the crop? Still think it's better to have dedicated custom dial like you showed in this video, but it would be nice to capture a clip in a pinch. Thanks for creating solid content on the s5.
Hi Matt, I'm not too sure actually.... I think it defaults to whatever your last video settings were when you're in photo mode, but I could be wrong! Thanks for the kind words buddy!
Hi. Great Video. Wondering if you could advise me? I cant seem to change exposure mode on C2. Its Blanked out and stuck on P. ANY help would be great,. Thanks
So do you have the dial on movie or on C2 for the video? When I do that on my s5 it doesn’t show a video camera icon on the bottom left of the screen, it shows C2. Yours doesn’t
Yeah so my C2 is set up for video, I don't use the video camera icon at all - I've just configured C2 to do everything I want it to for video - so manual exposure, shutter angles, function key shortcuts and set to 4K25 10bit as standard :)
@@JoshCameron Ignore. Sorted that now. Only thing I can't seem to do is to change the last button where you set it to stabilisation. I went into fn button mapping and rec mapping and changed it there but it takes over the whole screen when I press it and have to change it there, not fast like it does on yours at the top right?
Kinda late to the party :). Nice vid and very useful. Still baffled why these cameras are so underrated. Sure the focus may not be on par with its rivals but it's something you can work around Thank you
Hi! Thanks so much for such an incredible video. I updated my body firmware and I am having trouble with the ss gain operations master pedestal level, says I can't set in P mode? And also I can't change the buttons on screen. Any help would be appreciated!!!!
Hey Renata! Thank you for the kind words - glad you found this video helpful! So, the reason you're having issues accessing the SS Gain operations is because you're set to P (which is Program Auto). If you go to the Video icon in the menu , then to the 'Image Quality 1' menu and change your exposure mode to M, you should be able to use all of these functions freely :D Hope this helps!
Hi Josh ! I had a question : Can you zoom in well on your photos with the s5 ? I can see lot of details when using the focus assist, i can see lot of details when exporting to a computer, but on the camera itself the image feels really limited in terms of quality when zooming-in (like 4x feels mushy already and x8 is a mess). Maybe i missed a setting ?
I have the same thing with mine too, I just think that's the camera! The images are crisp when you zoom in by 2/3x , but anything past that is a little bit weird. If there is a setting to change that, then I'd love to know! I'll do some digging :)
@@JoshCameron this bugged me so much about the S5 when I first got it. Turns out you need to shoot RAW+Fine to get high quality preview files in camera. Give it a shot - it makes a huge difference in checking for focus :)
Hey Josh loving the video so far, one quick question (it might be a stupid one) when I'm in C2 mode it won't let me change the exposure mode to M, when I try to select it I get a message that says "Item cannot be set in current mode: Rec Mode P". I can't figure out how to change this. When I'm I switch to the video M mode I can switch it but not on the C2 mode. Got any help for me?
Hey Luke! Thanks for the kind words - so if you go into your menu when you're set to C2, and then go to 'Image Quality 1' , which will be the first tab on the first icon. Change Exposure mode to M and then save those settings to C2 :)
I doubt it to be honest... I can't see any new cameras coming out this year for Panasonic - I think they'll probably push more on the lens side which is what most people would prefer
Hey Josh, Quick q: is it possible to somehow set the custom buttons vid/photo as explained - also for pic. profiles like v-log ect.? Anytime Im shooting video on v-log and then I want to take some photo, i have to change my pic profile through Q button on the cam. So is it possible to set the pic profile for photo and for video separately to the custom buttons? Thank you so much
Thanks! Do you shoot photos in ‘standard’? I shoot them in v-log, apply the gamut 709 LUT and then a creative LUT, but I noticed some magenta pixel coloration on skintone in my photos and I don’t know what causes it. I’m thinking it may have to do with shooting v-log and applying LUTs.
Needing some help with my S5. When I put it into manual photo mode and try to change my iso, f-stop, and shutter speed, it allows me to do so but the image brightness on the camera screen and viewfinder never change. How am I supposed to know what my captured image will look like if I can’t see my settings change on the screen?
If you press the button on the front of the camera (just up & to the left of the sensor), that previews the settings as they will show up in the final photo
Hey Josh, how can I contact you? I just bought the Panasonic S5 but I'm clueless about everything lol, maybe you could teach me a thing or two if possible
Hi Josh do you know where to show the side shortcut menu on the monitor, I can't find it on my s5. Because when I set Fn3 Fn4 Fn5 button, they are in the side shortcut menu but I can't see the shortcut menu on the right side. Thanks.
My s5 raw photography when I bring them into lightroom / photpshop or capture one they are super dark?? 🤦♂🤷♂🤷♂ even though I made sure to check the exposure meter and over expose a little! Have you had this issue??
Hey Josh, I'm just discovering your channel and I'm a relatively new S5 owner. I have a question with regards to the photo setting for crop lenses. For example, I have a TTArtisan 50mm f1.2 native L mount but this lens is actually an APS-C lens. It works perfectly on my Leica CL but when I put it on my S5 it has a heavy vignette which is to expect when using an APS-C lens on a full-frame sensor. I have this same issue with my Voigtlander 21mm f4 adapted M mount lens. Everything I've read about using crop features on the S5 has to do with video, I'm trying to figure out how to do this for still photography. Please help.
Hi, I have seen someone setup their canon camera to have a second back button focus which also switches the shutter speed and aperture to a fixed setting. This would be incredibly handy as I have started shooting wildlife. Is this possible on the s5?
Hi, Josh! Is there a way to use zoom, like switching between FF and APS-C in video mode, but in photo mode? In my case, FF is disabled in photo mode...
Trying to do this at the moment. Is there a way to take shutter angle/speed off the dials? I've gone through the manual and can't find an option other than to move it between front and back dial. I have accidentally recorded footage at the wrong shutter angle at times during very physical shoots, presumably having bumped it.
How do I change my shutter speed on manual mode? It doesn’t allow me to do so. I do product photography, so I like to make my frame very dark and use my godox lights. I used to drop my shutter speed on my A7III to make it dark but i don’t know how to do this on my S5II
I switched from Canon to Lumix for the first time. How do I turn on AF Custom Setting (Video)? mine is set to off. When I press it, it says This item cannot be set in the current mode. Continuous AF is off. I am trying to adjust the sensitivity.
Hi please answer my question, im strugling. So i bought panasonic S5, and i got problem on Exposure, when i change to the M mode for Photography, the exposure on S5 LCD is automatically Adjusted, I mean when I move the camera to the bright area, the exposure on lcd is Automatically change became darker and vice versa. So, i cannot monitoring in real time when adjust the iso, aperture & shutter speed, the exposure is not changing at all. Please Help JOSH! god dammit im stuckkkkkk!
changing the shutter angle doesnt work for me when in C1 as it recognises it as a manual mode. I can do it in video mode but that defeats the purpose of setting up video in C1
@@JoshCameron figured it out haha I was in C1 as I was setting up settings when I should have been in movie mode. Thanks for the reply! Love the content 👌
The best way I choose to set up my two S5's i throwed them from 6th floor happy with results as expected (i Hate it but this doesn't mean you should to)
Too fast, too quick, too glib. I got some of it but you could have made this talkthrough 3x longer. It's not a competition. I very rarely give thumbs down - but you've got great insight, except it's all just spewed out without thought for the viewer.
