I got interested in real estate after watching the videos of a real estate agent from the US. That led me to checking how this is going in the UK. It's seems very different from the US. Your company, however, sounds really interesting in the way they do things. I wonder what are the requirements to work as a real estate agent.

Requirements - Some form of customer service/ sales background helps And obviously the willingness to work really long hours. Depending on the company, let’s use Morgan Randall as an example. They’d expect you to do 11-12 hour shift & that’s just office hours. You’d be expected to do viewings (consider buyers usually want to view properties in evening outside of working hrs) Plus the weekend. And on top of that- again using Morgan Randall they love to list 50-100k OTE, but the reality is unless you’re the branch manager, u will never get close to that figure. Which is why they have a huge turnover of staff.

I don’t think it’s because agents aren’t paid enough. If the agents worked and created real value, maybe they’d get paid. they’d get paid. Lazy English mentality 9-5 attitude and want double time at weekends as weekends are for families. 😴

He’s spot on about the quality of estate agents and the money they are paid. I work for one of the largest agents in London and the top 20 earners make around £60k to £85k a year but majority of people will earn around £30k to £35k because the fees are lower and lower due to BULL**** companies like Purple Bricks and EMove who have brought fees down. Also less properties selling a year as people are staying longer and more agents on the high street, less to go around so smaller agents charging 1% + VAT on a flat or house at £350,000 so they can actually stay open, when in reality they should be charging 1.75% + VAT minimum at that level. Higher wages better staff, better quality of service.

Jack - would it surprise you that fees in estate agency were on the slide 6 years before Purplebricks and the like came on board on 2014/15? The issue of fees is deeper than PB - we have allowed ourselves to become commodistised as industry through the use of Rightmove and CRM's where people have lost the art of deal making and hotboxes
