That "they" includes the players as well as management. Players who played for the love of the game and who felt fortunate that they got paid for doing so now expect to be set for life and live like kings and to get that they will do anything including ways we haven't even thought of yet. But, there will be people supporting some guy with 2000 homeruns in a career and be arguing they deserve to be in the HOF no matter what they did to do it.

@@donnyt9865 all star voting is a popularity contest and is about as good of a metric as a Gold Glove (Reggie Jackson, 1983 all star selection, was hitting .214 at the break and finished the year hitting .194. Rafael Palmeiro won a Gold Glove after only playing 28 games at 1st base in 1999. There's plenty of other examples besides Jackson, but also let's not forget that all teams have to have a representative at the all star game, regardless of how terrible the team/player are. Similarly, the Silver Slugger awards are full of snubs. World Series are won by teams, not individuals. If they were won by individuals, maybe guys like Andre Dawson would have a ring, but at least McGriff won one with the team of the 90s. The Hank Aaron Award wasn't introduced until 1999, on the tail end of Crime Dog's career. The Roberto Clemente Award is for sportsmanship. While I'm sure Ortiz deserved his award, I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who said Fred McGriff was a bad teammate. Having a number retired by a team is important, but not in the way you probably think. The Memphis Grizzlies recently retired Tony Allen's no. 9. Does that mean anything to anyone outside of Grizzlies fans? Kinda doubt it. Let me be clear though, I'm not saying Ortiz didn't deserve to be in the Hall, although I've never thought of him as a first ballot guy, but I definitely think McGriff, with very similar numbers, should also be in.

Also, the whole voting process needs to be simplified. If a guy is a “Hall of Famer”, then he should be in upon retirement. Or after one round of votes. It shouldn’t take up to 10 years to figure that out, when memories of them playing is so distant. You can’t vote off of a stat sheet or highlight reel. Do better!

I agree with you that the process needs to be simplified, but I don't agree with the rest. I'm a Tigers fan and I've been crusading for Lou Whitaker to get into the HOF for a while now and I really think it's better to have more of a window in which to allow players to get into the hall. Lou is one of the best 2nd basemen to ever play (in my only slightly biased opinion) and deserves to be in the hall. The problem is that people didn't really appreciate him when he retired, but as time goes on people realize that he was actually pretty darn good. Like I said at the start though I'm a Tigers fan so take it with a grain of salt, but I think cases like his are a good reason why players should be given more than one chance to get in.

There are plenty of pitchers in the Hall of Fame who admittedly doctored the baseball throughout their entire career. That's a competitive advantage. There were guys who played on amphetamines most of their career, again, a competitive advantage. Anyone who has played ball at a competitive level can tell you that you can take all the juice, all the drugs, anything you want, it's not going to help you hit a curveball, it's not going to help you throw 100 mph, it's not going to help you catch up to a 100 mph fastball. The difference between juice and no juice is the 10 ft difference between a fly ball to the warning track and a home run. Admittedly, thats the difference between an all star and a role player, but in both cases you still have to put bat on ball. I'm not saying that it's ok for ball players to do it, but for this one particular era of players to be vilified, especially those in the 80s and 90s who played when there was no testing or even a written rule banning it from the game is ridiculous. If they have the numbers they should all be in the HOF and so should Pete Rose \m/

It's not fair to keep the guys out from the steroid era and the Mitchell report just because there era had an investigation. Do another investigation and there will be just as many names.

I’m confused, didn’t David Ortiz actually fail a steroid test? With that logic it says that we know David Ortiz did steroids but we still let him in. Why is Barry Barnes not in there then?

Achieving the 500 HR milestone used to mean automatic entry into the Hall of Fame. Every single player before the steroid era ballplayers were in. In fact, only 6 players who have hit 500 or more home runs are not in the hall of fame - Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Manny Ramirez, Gary Sheffield and Sammy Sosa. All six suspected and accused of using banned substances. Most would agree that Barry Bonds was the best all around player of the six. However, how do you extrapolate what a player would or would not have accomplished? How can you determine how much steroids padded each player’s numbers? Many want to jump right out there and completely disregard Sosa’s 609 home runs, although only 9 players have reached that. We laugh at the mention of Gary Sheffield and hall of fame being in the same sentence. We scoff at the fact that Manny Ramirez has 7 more home runs than the great Mike Schmidt. Fact is, I don’t know many folks that see Gary Sheffield as a hall of famer, even though he hit 509 home runs. So, yeah let’s get rid of him. But how can you punish Sheffield without punishing Ramirez or Palmeiro for doing the exact same thing? And then how can you punish those three without punishing, Big Mac, Sosa, and yes even the great Barry Bonds. Either they get punished or they don’t. Either they lose votes because they used banned substances or they don’t. You can’t cherry pick who you are going to punish when they all did the same thing. Above everything, I don’t feel bad for Barry Bonds and I will tell you why. He let his ego get in the way of his trip to Cooperstown. Bonds was jealous of lesser talented players getting more accolades then him. So, like many, he broke the rules. But Barry you jughead! If you had just laid off the steroids, you would have had enough merit in your numbers without the juice to make the hall of fame. Most likely you would have wound up with somewhere between 600 and 700 home runs and still would have been the only player with 500 stolen bases and 500 home runs. Still 2500+ hits, 1500+ RBIs, etc. Point being, HOF numbers if only you didn’t let your head size triple. So no, I can’t feel sorry for a guy who was stupid. The all time Home Run leaders list is littered with fakes and phonies and frankly it is a disgrace to guys like Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Babe Ruth.

While I understand what you are trying to say, They threw any speculation of anything out the window when the voted in Ortiz on his first try. This has nothing to do with PED's. And I find it funny how you don't feel sorry for a guy who let his ego get in the way. Well did you factor in money? Did you not see these lesser guys getting HUGE contracts. How about the players he then would have had to face that were juicing (look at all the pitchers). Now I do agree with you in that I really wish he would not have juiced but the fact is, there sis more to it than just ego. Furthermore, the list of home run hitters you make mention of, there was a cheater at the top prior to Bonds. Greenies are a PED!

Asinine that anyone would use the character argument. There are scads of guys in the Hall of Fame that should be disqualified due to their character. Until that happens, let’s stop using character as a barometer in determining a player’s worthiness.

Why do the writers that never played Pro Baseball get a vote as to whom gets into the HoF. Half of these writers never made past Little League, let players vote base off of what each of these did on the field of play because that is what's important: not because you as a writer have a personal grudge and this is how you are able to get back and get even.

Basically the Baseball Writers are a joke. By electing Big Snappy, a player who tested positive for PEDs with inferior numbers they simply proved themselves to be a bunch of worthless drunken scribblers carrying on a personal vendetta against players who weren't cuddly with them. They did a similar thing to Dave Kingman who for many years was the only player with more than 400 HRs not enshrined because he had run ins with media weasels. Kingman successfully sued Baseball for blackballing him out of the game because he hit 36 HRs in his final season and had hit 100 in his last three. The baseball scribblers naturally didn't report it at the time because I guess they were pretending to be political journalists

And yet they all got lifetime bans but now we leave cheating in a grey area so later on people can decide whether to allow it or not so cheating will only become more popular and be more a game of doing it without getting caught.

Quick fact check: Ortiz did NOT test positive. His test was "Inconclusive" because there was so little of the unidentifiable substance that it wouldn't qualify as negative OR positive. Bud Selig even came out and said that Ortiz never tested positive for PED's. Clemens & Bonds DID test positive for the Mitchell report.
@byronsmith3152
@byronsmith3152 2 года назад
LOL Your fact check is all lies haha. Fact, Papi did fail his test. It was Manfred who later said that the test was inconclusive. However, if you look at Papi's stats, his career skyrockets during that supposed failed test. Furthermore, The league and the union had come to an agreement on those preliminary tests. Manfred's excuse does not hold any water, because if they did, the Union could sue MLB due to the fact that in the agreement, X amount of players needed to fail the test in order for MLB to institute league wide testing. They hit their mark and we are here now because of that. So either the tests were inconclusive and MLB lied to the Union, or they actually failed and MLB got their testing rules. Also, Bonds nor Clemens had a failed test listed in the Mitchel report.

Hey Jeremy Schaap, just because you don't like what someone said doesn't make it hate speech. It's just speech you don't like. There is a difference. It's funny how some people try to sound intelligent and educated but they end up looking like a total moron. I don't agree with everything Schilling said but that doesn't make it hate speech. Everyone's opinion in America is important and should be heard. Even if you don't like it. That's why it's free speech and not limited speech.
