Registered dietitian, Erica Mouch on the foods, diet, and lifestyle habits in the Blue Zones, geo-cultural regions where people have been found to live the longest.
They don't have mortgage they plant their own vegetables mostly organic food not Monsanto vegetables. They eat a lot of fish its staple since tgey live by sea water. They eat lots of seaweed
You have totally missed the most important point. It is not the food or the diet. In two words: it is "community support". People are surrounded by friends, genuine authentic long-term friends who will be there for you to support you whenever you need them; not superficial acquaintances good for small talk only.
Just watched a video on the two areas of Sardinia where this Blue Zone is. It’s more the lifestyle, which is rural, and the community/family closeness than the healthy food that contribute to long life. No processed food, all natural. The food is important, but it is only two areas of Sardinia that are in the Blue Zone. The pace of life is slow, and they like it that way.
The world should know more about horta, Greeks go to the nature and collect edible weeds, boil them, strain them and serve them with olive oil lemon juice and salt. yummy. it's basically medicinal herbs as food.
THE DATA IS MANIPULATED TO WEAPONIZE IT BY VEGANS. THEY EAT CHICKEN, LAMB AND PROBIOTIC CHEESES. NOT ALMOST ENTIRELY PLANTS AND CARBS LIKE THIS LADY SAYS. THE WRONG DATA BEING PUSHED HAS AN AGENDA.
This is literally how I eat!! They even got the red wine tea coffee right. 😂 I love Kale and sweet potato especially. Roast it in the oven with chayenne pepper and tumeric.👌 Salmon and eggs on rare occasions. No dairy.
Of note is that Loma Linda, California is one of the most expensive places to live in the US. People with a lot of money can eat a healthier diet and because of their wealth do not the have money problems many others do.
I also see that the Loma Linda California community that is of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) faith has PURPOSED to live according to the diet that they believe to be of Heavenly origin. So it is not so much about AFFLUENCE, but more about INSISTING on keeping up with what is desired.
I got fat that way. And that is NOT OK. If I eat everything I like I will be fat and sick regardless of if I do it in moderation or not. People need set strong limits on what the eat.
This is so true! I am in the UK and I have noticed around where I go, everything is just so processed! You can't buy one single thing that is "pure" without having a filler like "wheat" when it's pre-made. America is the same, they have so many fast food joints where people just eat rubbish food. It's better to have a whole foods diet and less dairy and less meat. I stopped drinking last year and feel so much better, my skin has improved and my health all around. The only thing is, is my sweet tooth craving and I find that's the only thing that's hard to give up. So at the moment I am only eating Carob chocolate bars with no added sugars. I have two books on the Blue Zone Diet I will read one of them tonight! who knows I may do a vlog on it lol
It's all about money and jobs. Most people are so ignorant or stupid about food. Sugar and processed foods are slow killers. If everyone ate only healthy foods just imagine all those food companies, restaurants and convenience stores selling processed foods going out of business. Not to mention the health insurance companies, hospitals and doctors not making their money. Our governments won't put a stop to it either because they want the taxes. So people get fat and sick.
Once I stopped eating meat and dairy I found my cravings disappeared. I also found it easy to do the 16/8 intermittent fasting which I never thought I could do.
These two women are still believers in a low carb diet. Amazing. They are preaching the blue zone diet but keep saying “ If you are low carb, you would eliminate the beans in fact you would get rid of most of this food”.
Interesting. Do you know what they eat? Do you know if they also eat a lot of red products? LIke red onion, red grapes, black grapes, blackberries, etc.
Stephen Murray well from my observation, these people are farmers, with emphasis on crop production. Not much red meat is consumed as thats a luxury in and out of itself. Diet consists of a lot of yuka root, loads of leafy vegetables. Almost every vegetables leaves are consumed, e.g beet leaves, cassava leaves, potato leaves, bean leaves, pumpkin leaves etc. wild spinach is also a popular. I have not seen blue berries but goji berries and mulberries are a popular as well. Even onion leaves, garlic leaves are condumed😂😂😂. Dry fish is a popular too..
Esther i didn’t see records being a major contributor to the findings.🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️ i did see alot of travel, observation of these zones as-well as alot of interviewing of the communities that live. I think this can be done in africa as well. It will add more to the value to the program. 😘😘😘
that’s actually not true! even the Okinawans from Japan traditionally eat mostly starchy vegetables - now they’re unfortunately incorporating more fast food, meat, etc but the older generations have stuck to the traditional diet
@@xmetalgamerx This from an Okinawan pork producer: Pork is essential for Okinawan cuisine. It is said that "everything is eaten except the oinking." Pork contains high quality protein is rich in vitamin B1that is effective for recovering from fatigue. The leg, skin, face ears of the pig are commonly eaten in Okinawa they are rich in collagen which keeps the elasticity of the skin. Aguu, the Okinawan native pig contains less fat, less cholesterol is rich in glutamic acid that gives a rich flavor compared to other pork. The people of Okinawa eat pork almost every day take in enough protein, therefore many elderly are healthy regardless of their age.
@@yikesboy13 Nice source. What can I tell you? Pork salesmen love hyping up the product. My source is a book written by a doctor. 10/10 recommend. It’s called Proteinaholic by Dr. Garth Davis.
@@xmetalgamerx The source wasn't to show anything other than the notion that Okinawans eat nothing but starch, vegetables and a little fish is incorrect.
@@yikesboy13 Literally look up “what do Okinawans eat” on Google and every page tells you they eat mostly starchy foods and vegetables. I’m supposed to believe otherwise because you found a pork salesman who insists they gorge on fatty slabs of pig flesh daily?
Hm, I get that. I love goat cheese and a little blue cheese. If your fruits and veggies are fresh and veggies have been grilled with some olive oil and spice, you may be surprised. I add a little cheese and cashews but do not need dressing anymore. Homemade dressing is easy to do and really is flavorful. It’s not all or nothing. (Unless you have a real dietary issue or food is not important to you. Sorry for the long reply, but I grew up on ice burg lettuce salads and I understand the need for dressing in that case. Hope you find some things you enjoy or check out my Instagram at thetriomethod fir some ideas. Good luck!
@@crand20033 Same here. I use Primal Kitchen dressings because they're dairy-free and incorporate a lot of spices. They're delicious and seem Blue Zone-friendly.
Positive outlook to life beats the diet component as does being socially well adjusted with 5-6 confidants to trust your life with . These two are nearly impossible to meet outside of the Zones
keep telling yourself that, that it's not the diet! everything helps sure and things are bound to choice up to a point! if they ate all meat and animal products i bet y'all would be all over it and saying how it's the diet that is giving them the longevity! the double standard of it all, all just to resist eating more vegs and fruit ugh
It’s not just their diet as it is mostly the water, air and the land. They raise their own food, eat meats, some fish, consume large quantities of locally pressed olive oils, handmade goat cheese and drink no cows milk
Great advice. That's very close to the way i have been eating since having cancer 42 years ago. Except i use more fats and oils. Unrefined. Of course !
@@someguy2135 WRONG !! A diet high in unrefined fresh fats and oils has been used for hundreds of years to prevent or reverse cardiovascular disease. For instance flaxseed and olive oil. PLEASE DO SOME RESEARCH!
@@herbbowler2461 Case studies are not as conclusive as studies with multiple people. The more people the better, to reduce the chance things like genetic factors.
Red wine is a migraine trigger for me also! So obviously not worth it!! However, I take a resveratrol supplement in its place and eat the red grapes whenever I can. What do you think?
Yes alcohol is a carcinogen (it can cause cancer everywhere it touches...mouth, esophageal, stomach and colon cancer). The resveratrol in just a few grapes would be more than in a full glass of wine. Just eat a few grapes. It's a much healthier option.
All these places have a thing in common… they don’t live to eat like we do in the US. There’s so much delicious fatty food here. There they just live their lives and don’t think about chipotle or Panda Express. They just have some bread and cheese
Eliminating processed food, starches without the fiber and added sugar are commonalities between “blue zone”, keto and carnivore diets. Your body and regular monitoring of your labs are your best guide to eating a healthful diet.
You see how ass backwards we are here in America. I actually have freinds that eat bacon n eggs and are so insane they think my organic steel cut oats with organic rasberries, blueberries n walnuts is going to make me fat. Meanwhile we are all 48. There all gutted and overweight. Im a lean 150lbs at 5'9".
Why do I get pain in my neck when eating those whole grains, when they are supposed to be healthy and do me good??? I just don't feel good when eating whole grains, like rice, pasta, bread and so on. The same with beans
what about fresh fruit and vegs? potatoes? grains are notoriously harder to digest and if you already have digestion issues..well they shouldn't be your first choice! also, carbs are often blamed but never the horrific amounts of fat that accompanies them! heck, we drench everything in oil nowdays! gotta be smarter than that
Eating all those fibrous foods made my Diabetes worse and I was in 5 meds including Insulin... went low carb high fat and off all 5 meds even without losing a lot of weight but BG went up even without carbs until my body runs out of carbs in fat cells. Then it goes back down with exercise
Dear Josee, Sorry to know that you have diabetes. There is a natural way to help diabetes and that is cinnamon if you can take two teaspoons of cinnamon powder in your diet . maybe on your toast, tea or anything. But you should take two teaspoons a day in any form. You will find a difference in two weeks. Good luck
it's the fat that is spiking your sugar levels up' when you have fat in your blod it obstructs the cells from receiving the glucose from the carbs try eating carbs without fat and you'll see what i mean
This high carb diet is definitely not for people with diabetes. If you have diabetes all potential benefits from this kind of diet are outweighed hy high blood sugar and insulin spikes. So low carb is the way to go! Most importantly it will keep you healthy. You can still include things like kale, leafy greens, etc, since they have a very low glycemic index
If you have diabetes though, it's actually eating saturated fat that causes diabetes as it causes your muscle cells to become covered in fat, which increases insulin resistance. Yes carbs will cause a blood sugar spike, but it's the fat that causes diabetes in the first place
I have seen pic of people from the blue zones. Lots of them would be considered overweight. Especially the generation after them. With the exception of the Japanese.
Salads 🥗 GREECE! Loma Linda, Blue Zones💙 Sweet 🍠 Potatoes, Vitamin A😊 RAW GARLIC 🧄 is antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, A Prebiotic, Rosemary is Antibacterial, Antimicrobial
so the "secret" pretty much repeats all the conventional dietary advice: eat less refined food and refined sugars, eat more fiber, fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds. (Is this really a "secret"?) Also, the blue zones may be a myth in terms of verifying the age of these demographics. only recently has systematic verification of age been practiced. Also, it seems the Okinawan claim in particular is in dispute as recent data shows that men in Okinawa don't live as long as men in other Japanese prefectures.
Sadly, there is a lot of confirmation bias in this reporting. Okinawa for example, like the rest of Japan, is very pork focused. And there's always been a lot of frying...I wonder if Erica has ever been to Japan (or Greece)? I have been 50 + times over the decades and the ingestion of a large amount of fats (both the so called healthy and saturated) is clear. This is often overlooked to confirm the anti-fat bias that nutritionists have had indoctrinated in them. Fundamentally, there's nothing wrong in this basic vegetable/legume direction -- they are proven to be healthful and are delicious -- but the contention that blue zone people don't eat a fair amount of fats is false.
@@FS-rj4xo I think it's a combination of things. First and foremost, the elderly are revered (although that might be changing a bit) and there's a very active social life for seniors in Japan. Also up until recently, the Japanese diet didn't consist of endless processed carbohydrates (beyond rice of course). Sadly that too is changing and we're starting to see obesity there in larger numbers. Finally, we have the wrong boogeyman in our sights in my humble opinion. We are the antithesis of the long-lived Japanese and French for that matter -- they don't fear fat and have not traditionally embraced the levels of carbs and sugars that we have. My 2 yen.
@@someguy2135 I think that the misinformation that Okinawan/Japanese people eat nothing but vegetables, rice and a little fish does a disservice to all on this thread. We keep looking at saturated fats as the problem here in North America when I think that the real bogeyman is processed sugary foods. I love vegetables and eat a lot of them but please don't misinterpret me on this. It's just that the Japanese diet features lots of pork, beef and fish in larger amounts that we 'want' to acknowledge. It doesn't fit with our desire to confirm the bias of veganism I suppose ;-)
@@yikesboy13 Did you even click on my link? Do you dispute the fact that the diet of the Okinawan's at the time of their amazing longevity success included only 1 or 2 percent of their calories from pigs ("pork") and other animals? Unfortunately, the trend is for them, as well as other Japanese are eating a lot more animal based food these days, and their health is suffering as a result. I could give a link to support that, but I doubt that you would click on it.
Not most of the Seventh Day Adventists. All Blue Zone populations eat little or no meat. The only one in the USA are the Seventh Day Adventists of Loma Linda California. They are taught by their religion to not eat meat. SDA men live about 10 years longer than other Californian men. Not all SDA's eat vegetarian, but most are vegetarian or vegan. This way of eating really works. A way to lose weight and keep it off naturally, and most importantly, adding fiber and phytonutrients and vitamins in the quantities you need on a daily basis.
@@crand20033 There is plenty of protein to be derived from plants. Food scientists suggest cutting way back on meat because of the growth producing hormones (think cancer here) that are in excess in those food. I personally 90% less meat and fish tan 3 years ago. Feel way better and much healthier. Look up Dr. Joel Fuhrman on RU-vid.
The genes people, they do walk to their neighborhood chatting with neighbors, they walk walk, Americans ride cars even just a Mile distance and always indoors.
Fiber is key. I eat about 80 but would love to try 100 grams. I used to have a colon sore spot all gone……also fiber allows natural sugars to allow a slower glucose rise and fall
@@deborahhebblethwaite1865 It's the soluble fiber that slows the absorption of all nutrients, giving the body more time to deal with them. As a result eating a high carb meal doesn't cause blood sugar spike. Also soluble fiber carries toxic waste from the body.
@@herbbowler2461 so what does the insoluble fiber do? I looked up the foods in each category. It could get quite complicated. But i would like to see if i can balance this. Thanks
@@deborahhebblethwaite1865 Insoluble fiber is the rough fiber that cleans the intestinal tract. We do need it. But to much can cause irritation in the gut. Crunchy veggies and wheat are all high in insoluble fiber. Fruit , oats , flaxseeds and chia seeds are all high in soluble fiber and very soothing to the gut. Even with IBS. Therefore if i use whole wheat flour i add lots of oats or even oat bran. Don't cook or bake with flaxseed as it destroys the ALA omega 3 oils. Eat only freshly ground and raw. Avoid any baked goods or cereals with added flaxseed. Good luck.
I eat a lot of organic red meat and practice fasting in winter while eat a lot of fruit, fish, and veggies in summer 3 meals a day. This how is my body feels good about and this is how we lived for millions of years. Hope this clears all the confusions about healthy diet.
You forgot fish and healthy fatty pork and beef need that for muscles and that helps to lose weight and feed your mind as well as vegetables everything has to be pure and real
That's a rather simplistic and unscientific viewpoint. Have you considered that the soil in the blue zones might have a different mineral and other content which enhances their food.
How is this true when meat eaters do worse off in terms of obesity, high blood pressure, cholesterol, cancer, diabetes, parkisnsins, alzheimers, and rheumatoid arthiritis? Edit: oh and stroke and heart disease too
@@randomsheep1165 You got it backwards. Eating fat does not make you fat. Eating carbs, fructose and and other sugars make you obese. That's why Eskimos and native aborigines are healthy eating mostly meat.
@@spartaeus ok you say all this but the statistics don't lie. Meat eaters perform worse in all the metrics I listed above. Eskmios aren't any more representive of meat eaters jist as fruitarians aren't representivie of vegetarians. Eating fat DOES make you fat. It also causes plaques to develop in your blood vessels and contribute to strokes. How can you say that eating carbs is what makes you fat when on average vegans and vegetarians have lower BMI than meat eaters?
@@randomsheep1165 You don't know what your saying. Vegetarians are the most sickly people. The studies are everywhere. Take 5 minutes to research it. I can't do it for you. @@spartaeus what's sickly about less cancer, heart disease and diabetes lol😂😂 Men of the Seven Day Adventist group (essentially vegan) live in average 10 years longer than their typical male american counterpart who eats meat

Which is a shame because when you switch to a healthier date it tastes much better than the red meat and processed foods which actually don't have that much flavor.

I can say with complete confidence that the the people of Sardinia, Ikaria, Okinawa, and Nicoya DO NOT eat a mostly plant based diet!! My best friend's family is from Okinawa. My boyfriend's family is from Sardinia and we both have been to Ikaria and Nicoya. They are all very much heavy on animal consumption and animal fat consumption. This Blue Zone myth of these places being heavy on a plant diet is so false. It needs to die. In all these places there is no such thing as retire. People work until they physically can't. They are heavy on community. The elders are revered and have purpose within the community. A lot of those starchy foods were introduced rather recently. If you want to be in good health, what they are advocating will not give you good health, quite the contrary from what I see.
Besides all the above factors I mentioned(having purpose, no retirement, mentality, etc..) they don't eat processed foods, most of their food is fresh and local, they don't overeat or eat throughput the day, they use animal fats for cooking, not veg/seed oils, they eat all parts of the animal, some kind of animal meat is in all their meals, etc.. These blue zone "studies" were done with the older generation, when this way of eat is the norm. It's not like that any more with the younger generation. If you were to compare the older generation and the newer one, the newer ones are not eating like their grandparents or parents did now.
@@puidemare2337 ok...so from what you said I understand that we need to wait for another 60 years to figure out if the new way of eating of the younger generation is equally as good as the old one..
