The BRUTAL Execution Of Bishop John Fisher

One of the most important Catholics in Tudor England was Bishop John Fisher. By all accounts he seemed a rather peaceful and pious man who was devoted to his faith, until Henry VIII made drastic changes to the church born out a drive to obtain a divorce. Henry VIII's changes to religion spelled a huge problem for Fisher, as he was the Bishop of Rochester and began to very publicly back Catherine of Aragon over the King. Which when Henry is your king is not wise to do.
John Fisher for his refusal to accept King Henry as the Head of the Church of England and also for his refusal to acknowledge Anne Boleyn as a legitimate Queen would spell his downfall. Because of this he was thrown into the Tower of London and he was brutally imprisoned in barbaric fashion, to the point where the public were shocked at his emaciated figure. He was given very little food and was kept inside in damp and cold conditions, which was not ideal for a man in his mid 60s.
His execution would finally come, and Henry spared him being hanged, drawn and quartered and instead commuted his death sentence to a simple beheading. This took place at Tower Hill and it was said that Fisher met his end with courage and dignity. His beheading was clean in one sweep, however what happened to John Fisher after his death certainly was not dignified. Join us as we look at 'The Brutal Execution of Bishop John Fisher.'

Saint John Fisher was also a visionary, praying on the scaffold not only for the soul of his sovereign, Henry, but also Henry’s realm. He could see even then where the ideology behind the Reformation would lead, not to just the Dissolution of the monasteries, but eventually to the Dissolution of England herself. We now tolerate the public mocking of Christ and anyone who professes a Christian faith and acts upon it in public life is open to be ridiculed, if not persecuted. Christianity is the butt of comedy and the wilful selfishness of Henry, that you can be and do whatever your own moral compass directs, is the prevailing counsel of modern life. And England herself is becoming less the land of the English and more the land of anyone who sets foot on her, with the English, because of their skin colour, having to deny their own race and their own history.

The problem here was first political as well as religious. A century beforehand, the pope would have granted a divorce or something. Or the king would have waited till the queen died (perhaps ensuring it). But the pope couldn't help. He was imprisoned by renegade troops of Emperor Charles V (a relative of Queen Catherine) in 1527. By dispersing the bandit troops, Charles had the pope at his mercy. The pope stalled and Wolsey (the guy Henry wanted to secure the divorce) couldn't do better. @@TheUntoldPast - Bishop John Hooper, one of the very few Protestant martyrs to be educated at the University of Oxford, was burned at the stake in Gloucester on 9th February, 1555. The fire kept going out as it was a wet and windy day, so it had to be re-lit three times. It took around 45 minutes for Hooper to die. First of all his bowels fell out into the flames and then his arms burned off, one after the other. The lower part of the stake, which was buried in the ground and so did not burn, is on public display in Gloucester Museum.

I would be genuinely curious to hear the opinion of any active member of Church of England on Henry VIII. I studied many books about Henry VIII and Tudors in general, including the religious affairs, foreign affairs, etc. I noticed that many British authors stick to the old propaganda about how monasteries were evil, how catholic church was bad and corrupt and so on. Luckily, more and more authors now reveal that accusations agains monasteries were the combination of Henry's and Cromwell's hatred against Rome and the effort to earn money and treasures because of the empty state treasury. Of course, there were corrupted bishops like Wolsey, but the example of those was highlighted, while the work of thousands of monks who were helping poor or ill people and provided the care of orphans, was diminished on purpose (the increase of poverty after the abolition of monasteries was enormous). What is even more embarrassing is that Henry VIII created the church that was not Roman Catholic but not protestant as well. He ordered the burning of protestant "heretics", but banned some key features of catholic religion as well. He surely did not realize that he created the "mixture" which will collapse after his death. I mean, no matter what do you believe, if you look at the Henry's madness that was unleashed after cca 1530, you simply have to admit he became a tyrant without any self-awareness, killing everybody who opposed him without any logical key. He ordered to execute his wives, his former friends (More), members of clergy (Fisher, abbots, monks), his right hand (Cromwell), nobility (Surrey, Pole, Grey), common people, etc. His attitude towards his family members and closest friends was horrible. I mean OK, I don't have any problem to admit that Roman Catholic church made many mistakes during medieval ages and the reformation was kind of expected outcome which actually helped also the church itself to change into today image. So I can accept the opinion of any protestant saying - our denomination was created because of the errors in Roman church. But what will the member of the Church of England tell me? Our denomination was created because our king wanted to divorce? Because that was the origin of British reformation, nothing more and nothing less. The subsequent events (increased acceptance to protestant ideas, partly due to Boleyns/Cranmer influence, the abolition of monasteries, etc.) were only the consequences of one man's foolish ideas. It is interesting to discuss these issues with English to see how they are influenced by hundreds of years of propaganda, how straightforward they see those events. Henry VIII - the founder, Elizabeth I - Golden age.... While as you look closer to the sources, you will find the oppression of Catholics during Tudors reign (except 1553-58) as quite horrible, actually the estimates of Henry VIII victims are worse than Spanish Inqisition, especially considering how short timespan his reign covered. However, many people in GB still see it like - Mary = bloody evil, Elizabeth I - almost saint. It is interesting that many people there still believe that catholics actually were responsible for many attempts on queen's life, while even British modern historians suggest that most of them (if not even all) were actually the work of protestant infiltrators/agents provocateur to further discredit catholic minority. It is interesting to read how Cecil and Dudley were actually paranoid and they saw catholics everywhere. Nevertheless, history is written by winners and the result is that many people in GB still see Catholics as bad. From my point of view, we should really move on and stop excusing the deaths of catholics during the reign of Elizabeth by the deaths of protestants during the reign of Mary. I think we should get rid of that historical propaganda and admit those were cruel times, things like "Golden age" are actually creation of propaganda and the religious acceptance and tolerance was really bad during the reigns of both sisters. The religious oppression in England was a fact (honestly, nobody can really accept that all those priests, monks and common people were trying to commit treason. From what I read about Campion - he made an oath not to even criticize Elizabeth) and we really shouldn't make an excuses for that. We should rather reconcile, forgive the faults of our opponents, ask for forgiveness for our faults (and there were also many, saying this as catholic), forget the past and live in peace. We believe in the same God!

Peter who was the head apostle and it is his successors who head the Church founded by Apostles.Coptic Catholic Church(St. Mark),Byzantine Catholic Church(St. Andrew),Syriac Catholic Church9St. James),Syro-Malnkara Catholic Church(St. Thomas),Chaldean Catholic Church(St. Thaddeus),Armenian Catholic Church(St. Bartholomew),etc...It was Pope Damsus I. that headed the Council of Rome in 382 that gave us the Bible. It was excommunicated heretic Luther that opened a can of worms that led to now thousands of contradicting sects

Glenn Thompson Most people need or want spiritualism of some sort. If it isn’t traditional/organized religion, it will be something else. Leftist wokism is a form of religion. You aren’t allowed to question the narrative, you are a sinner (i.e. “bigot, climate change denier, racist, misogynist”) if you do.

@@KempSimon its not really the same thing. He can't simply choose to execute someone, for instance, or dole out whatever punishments he wants without question. He has to make decisions within the law as do elected leaders of other nations and can be removed from power, just like other nations with democracy. He can't literally do whatever he pleases like medieval Kings and Queens could, like imprisoning people for having a different religion or executing other contenders for his position. If he tried that he'd be held accountable. Medieval royalty weren't, and that's what I'm referring to.

The punishment for failing the Inca emperor was being flayed alive. The Mesoamericans used human sacrifice by cutting out the living heart with an obsidian knife, followed by cannibalism. For executions, Imperial China used quartering ( being cut into four pieces), boiling, beheading, being torn apart by four chariots, strangulation, or ‘slow slicing’.
