During the reign of King Henry VIII over 70,000 people were executed within his Kingdom of England. Many of those who were executed were close with the King, and an execution that shocked the public was that of Bishop John Fisher. Fisher was a man of great peace and piety, and he was the Bishop of Rochester and he was even a former teacher of Henry VIII. He was greatly respected and was even being considered to become a Cardinal as the Pope wanted to appoint him to this sacred position. But John Fisher would cross one of History's most brutal Kings. He refused to support Henry VIII in his quest for an annulment of divorce for his first wife Catherine of Aragon so that Henry could marry Anne Boleyn. He realised that the King was trying to break from Rome and the Pope.
John Fisher began to preach against the King, and also began to warn of Henry's changes to the church, and he became an enemy of the King. Because of this he was thrown into prison in the Tower of London and was kept in rather brutal conditions and it was said he was very emaciated. There were attempts to get him to reconsider his position, but Fisher refused and he was placed on trial for treason. He was found guilty and was then sentenced to death and was beheaded in brutal fashion upon Tower Hill. It was said that his execution was very bloody and barbaric, and many that day were moved by the courage that he met the axe with.
