One of the most brutal executions of the Tudor period saw a young woman from York being crushed to death on a bridge near to the historic city. The Tudor period was a very dangerous time in History for people to live, especially those who held different religious beliefs to the King or Queen. Margaret Clitherow was one of these people, and she became a Catholic after converting in her younger years. She lived during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, who tried to solve problems with religion by issuing a religious settlement, but this was tough for Catholics and their worship was banned and outlawed. Clitherow was imprisoned a number of times for refusing to attend Protestant Church of England services, and was held inside York Castle. But as the years went on she became more staunchly Catholic and rebellious, and she began to hide priests and Catholic artefacts in her house on the Shambles in York. The Shambles is a historic and incredibly busy street, but under her husbands nose, Clitherow was organising secret Catholic worship. This was a crime which was punishable by death, and her husband was even one of those who told the local government about Catholic worship.
Clitherow hid priests in her house on The Shambles, and continued to do so until she was caught. She was arrested again and was then brought to trial for her religious crimes, but she refused to give either an innocent or guilty please. She did this to protect her husband and children from torture or being forced to testify. To try to get a plea from Clitherow, the judge ordered that she should be put to death by her own door. She was to be executed in a horrifically brutal way. She was taken to a bridge in York and her front door was brought, and then she was forced to lie down on top of a large rock that jabbed into her back and spine. Her door was lay on top of her, and then 900 pounds of weight was added. This brutally killed Margaret Clitherow and her ordeal was 15 minutes of pure agony. After her death, she became known as a martyr and as 'The Pearl of York,' for her brutal death.

The Elizabethan period of Tudor History was so ugly and violent. Queen Elizabeth could have just as easily stopped this nonsense, madness and utter chaos. All the people that martyred themselves in the name of religious beliefs… I eternally hope they rest well in Heaven. No one deserves to die like that. So brutal and sadistic, it’s just crazy scary.
@Baltic_Hammer6162
@Baltic_Hammer6162 2 года назад
The violence began with the Vatican trying to maintain power by any means. When the pope issues a proclamation to kill and/or depose Queen Elizabeth that encouraged a long string of assassination plots. If the pope kept his nose out of earthly affairs and violence, it would've been a FAR more peaceful time. All the violence was initiated by Rome.

"There is non nonsense more nonsensical than religious nonsense" How utterly tragic so many died because of their beliefs. Changing the subject a little : I live in a quaint little country town in Yorkshire and I am a country boy at heart. However if somebody said to me "Here is a million pounds , you must go and buy yourself a nice house with it and also it MUST be in a city" Then York would definitely be my first choice. It's a lovely old city and we go there quite often.

Actually, the Americans did something very similar in Vietnam when they executed prisoners (in violation of the Geneva Conventions) by laying the out on the road and slowly running them over with a vehicle. As you see, the beam in one's eye is harder to see than the speck of dust in someone else's.

Now that information has been cleansed from public sites and must be dug up at libraries. Up until not long ago you could access photographs of Vietnamese prisoners being dropped alive from helicopters. I suppose there has been an effort to clean the Internet from embarrassing stuff. Of the many atrocities committed by the US in Vietnam the only one that still remains in the public domain is the My Lai massacre, which, by its very nature, is hard to sweep under the rug, so to speak. Carol Hough: I have never liked the Tudors.I am a White Rose girl.And yes,the Plantagenets were far from angels.But the Tudors killed innocent children as well as men & women.H7 was a usurper who tarnished R3 so he could claim the throne.And, incidentally dated his reign from the day before Bosworth,to incriminate men who were fighting for their king.H8 was a bully & tyrant.It was probably his fault Mary became what she was.Elizabeth was a vain piece of goods who expected every man to fall in love with her.Edward was showing signs of being like his father.The Stanley's were,frankly,yes men with every eye to advantage.Richard held Stanley's eldest son Lord Strange as hostage for his father's loyalty.Stanley's response was brutal"I have other sons"And Margaret Beaufort would,could & did everything possible to put her son on the throne.Her husband was Constable of the Tower.If,IF,those boys were killed And it's a big If,he could've arranged matters to the satisfaction of his wife & himself.Who knows where a lust for power will lead.Ask Hitler maybe.Or Putrid.I would never have thought myself capable of wanting to witness an execution.But for him,I will make an exception.

As the Sabbath has become the special point of controversy throughout Christendom, and religious and secular authorities have combined to enforce the observance of the Sunday, the persistent refusal of a small minority to yield to the popular demand will make them objects of universal execration. It will be urged that the few who stand in opposition to an institution of the church and a law of the state ought not to be tolerated; that it is better for them to suffer than for whole nations to be thrown into confusion and lawlessness. The same argument many centuries ago was brought against Christ by the “rulers of the people.” “It is expedient for us,” said the wily Caiaphas, “that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.” John 11:50. This argument will appear conclusive; and a decree will finally be issued against those who hallow the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, denouncing them as deserving of the severest punishment and giving the people liberty, after a certain time, to put them to death. Romanism in the Old World and apostate Protestantism in the New will pursue a similar course toward those who honor all the divine precepts. GC 615.2 As the decree issued by the various rulers of Christendom against commandment keepers shall withdraw the protection of government and abandon them to those who desire their destruction, the people of God will flee from the cities and villages and associate together in companies, dwelling in the most desolate and solitary places. Many will find refuge in the strongholds of the mountains. Like the Christians of the Piedmont valleys, they will make the high places of the earth their sanctuaries and will thank God for “the munitions of rocks.” Isaiah 33:16. But many of all nations and of all classes, high and low, rich and poor, black and white, will be cast into the most unjust and cruel bondage. The beloved of God pass weary days, bound in chains, shut in by prison bars, sentenced to be slain, some apparently left to die of starvation in dark and loathsome dungeons. No human ear is open to hear their moans; no human hand is ready to lend them help. GC 626.1 The heavenly sentinels, faithful to their trust, continue their watch. Though a general decree has fixed the time when commandment keepers may be put to death, their enemies will in some cases anticipate the decree, and before the time specified, will endeavor to take their lives. But none can pass the mighty guardians stationed about every faithful soul. Some are assailed in their flight from the cities and villages; but the swords raised against them break and fall powerless as a straw. Others are defended by angels in the form of men of war. GC 631.1 Chapter 40-God’s People Delivered When the protection of human laws shall be withdrawn from those who honor the law of God, there will be, in different lands, a simultaneous movement for their destruction. As the time appointed in the decree draws near, the people will conspire to root out the hated sect. It will be determined to strike in one night a decisive blow, which shall utterly silence the voice of dissent and reproof. GC 635.1

I highly recommend 'Conflict of the Ages' series of five books by Christian Author Ellen G. White (Authentic Seer/Prophet of God)..... "The Great Controversy between Christ and Satan" Ellen G. White, 1888, rev.1911 ✝️ "Through the two great errors, the immortality of the soul and Sunday sacredness, Satan will bring the people under his deceptions. While the former lays the foundation of spiritualism, the latter creates a bond of sympathy with Rome. The Protestants of the United States will be foremost in stretching their hands across the gulf to grasp the hand of spiritualism; they will reach over the abyss to clasp hands with the Roman power; and under the influence of this threefold union, this country will follow in the steps of Rome in trampling on the rights of conscience." GC 588.1 The Sabbath will be the great test of loyalty, for it is the point of truth especially controverted. When the final test shall be brought to bear upon men, then the line of distinction will be drawn between those who serve God and those who serve Him not. While the observance of the false sabbath in compliance with the law of the state, contrary to the fourth commandment, will be an avowal of allegiance to a power that is in opposition to God, the keeping of the true Sabbath, in obedience to God’s law, is an evidence of loyalty to the Creator. While one class, by accepting the sign of submission to earthly powers, receive the mark of the beast, the other choosing the token of allegiance to divine authority, receive the seal of God. The catholic church today seems to be OK with attending other faiths... Yes you are not supposed to actively worship there... but you can attend. I kind of like this because it opens up your world and helps make you more accessible for others... Back then the strict rigor of not praying with others who have different Christian beliefs seems strange... I really wonder if the rigors back then were too excessive.. maybe why different faiths were killing each other and freedom of belief wasn't acceptable. Back then folks took religion seriously though.. not like today's total indifference.. .
