Here on TheTopher, I'm known for putting a camera on my face and driving cars. Whether it's about any of my personal cars or reviews on weekly test vehicles, the goal is to give you an idea of what a certain car is like to drive or live with. Most of my videos are filmed in POV, with my clothes on, and (for like the 5th time) with in-ear binaural audio. Which, if I haven't made it clear yet, is why you should wear headphones. Because of the whole "woah" factor. It's there, trust me. Try it, you'll see! Or don't. As long as you whitelist me on your adblocker I'm okay with whatever you do or don't do with regards to headphone usage. That is all. Oh and I guess you should also probably subscribe. I have a legacy with a similar engine and I get what he's saying, if you floor it in a higher gear it just injects fuel in the engine but it doesnt really accelerate, sometimes less throttle made it accelerate more

You have to roll on the throttle to get a better response, sometimes just flooring seems to do nothing, that's the torque dip for ya. Adding headers should get a better response is what I think he means.

He's refering to a difference in the relationship linking the way the throttle plate of the throttle body opens versus the amount of compression on the gas pedal. From the factory, some cars have a non-linear relationship in the way the throttle is actuated to make the car feel "faster". A little throttle pedal input leads to a very high opening of the throttle pedal and what's left doesn't open it much more (it is already almost 100% open). Typically, a good performance tune will bring the relationship to nearly linear, thus 50 % gas pedal input equals 50% more or less throttle. This let's the driver have a much finer control on the power delivered by the engine, whereas on the stock tune it feels more like an on/off switch.

Hey Topher im planning to purchase this header soon do i NEED a tune? i still plan on getting OFT but do i need to be in a rush to get it will the header damage my car in anyways without a tune short or long term? Thanks

Can't wait until my 2018 BRZ comes in. Keep torturing myself by watching videos on RU-vid! I didn't realize you were still planning to modify the car, as I got the impression from your 3 year update video that you were happy with the car as is. At that point you had even gone back to the stock tune. So seeing this new update was a pleasant surprise.

My 2015 BRZ is very similar to yours: I bought the OFT 2 years ago and the FT86 Catted header a few months later. I just put Michelin Pilot 4s's on Enkei RPF1's on it last week. The header and the OFT (Shiv's generic Catted header tune) pretty much eliminate the "torque dip" and improve drive-ability very much like you describe: it's nice not to have to downshift all the time but it's ever so much better now when you do. Next year I think I may install a Stainless Cat Back to replace the rusting OEM pipes; I too have to put up with Ohio road salt. Other than the header, tune, and tires I've installed the Toyota OEM mud flaps, a Perrin "Gurney Flap" on the spoiler, blue convex door mirrors (to kill blind spotitis) and a rear backup camera. I've upgraded the stock audio system by replacing the original (horrible) speakers. I replaced both the dash and rear panel speakers with 3.5" Infinity Reference REF-3032cfx. The door speakers I replaced with the 6.5" woofers from Polk Audio MM 6502 component speakers and discarded the tweeters. Surprisingly, the stock head unit and trunk amp provide enough power and proper crossover filtering for the door and rear panel speakers; I only had to tweak the dash speaker wiring harness with a few bypass jumpers and add filter capacitors to get the dash speakers working correctly. System sounds Great!

@@jumppy8442 Still driving it. Tune is still embedded in the ECU. Torque is flat from 2500 up to 7000 rpm (no torque dip). Still love the car. I keep two sets of wheels and tires - one for Summer and another for Winter. On Winter performance tires it's like a snowmobile.

@@jumppy8442 2017 Limited. That year the back up camera was standard equipment, HP was bumped to 205, and they lowered the gear ratios for better 0-60 times.

Congrats, those mods seem to have worked out real nice. I was actually curious if it were possible to swap the steering wheel out for the flat bottom one you get in the wrx. I know it’s just for aesthetic but I think it’d be sharp in the brz compared to the stock wheel.

Yaayyy another BRZ update. I assume no plans of boosting(sprintex supercharger) nor rigidity such as engine mount, transmission mounts etc? I believe that you have found a good stopping point power wise for the BRZ And would you say that a new BRZ benefit from a UEL or EL? I love the sound of the UEL, and the low end torque it'll give.

I have a similar set up of the FT86SF catted uel, OFT(same exact tune), catless fp, and a catback. Loudness when I want it but not too "drone-y" on the freeway. Highly recommend this setup!

*For those asking about HP:* won't be much, nor does it matter. what matters a lot more is the driving dynamic that changes and the changes in power delivery. Killing that mid range torque + refinement is the only reason you should consider this rather than power.

Exactly. It's a different sports car with the increased torque. Don't get me wrong, it feels like there have been some healthy gains in the top of the powerband, too. But the most welcome addition is the increased drivability out of corners in the most frequently used areas of the rev-range.

It really doesn't matter as much as you think. To be honest with a full exhaust system and a remap you're only going to gain 20ish peak horsepower in one of these but the biggest difference is mid range torque and hp around 3-4k. You gain about 40hp mid RPM range which makes a massive difference in daily driving whereas peak horsepower you only really notice if you're revving the nuts off the car.

@@B__L the car weighs under 2800lbs. A 20hp gain will absolutely be noticeable. You dont need too much power anyways, otherwise you wont be able to control it. Plus some people like a good all around car that can do a bit of everything, not just fast

What year is your BRZ? Looks pre-'17? Premium or Limited? This is now 3 years later. Thoughts? I have a '17 Limited with Performance Pack. This looks interesting, but at same time, the next gen is just around the corner with more HP and useable torque. That said, mine is low miles and I have winter wheels and tires too. So maybe I can upgrade the power and delivery without getting the new model. Thanks. Keep up the great videos.

Hi TT, Did you use the OFT OTS tune? The way you wrote it in the description makes me think, that there's FT86 SF UEL dedicated tune. If that's the case, could you please direct me how to get it. I have MY2014 BRZ with FT86 SF catted UEL also (just installed a couple of days ago) and Invidia Q300 cat back. The car feels much quieter than with a stock headers now, opposite of what I was looking for 🙃

The Corsa exhaust has been on my list to get for my BRZ but I am wanting to install an UEL header + tune first. I have read on the ft86 forum that a lot of the headers won’t work too well with the Corsa exhaust as it diminishes some its noise and can make it too loud which is making me look at other options instead. Did you feel like the FT86 header made it lose some of the characteristics of the exhaust? It sounds nice in the cabin but there doesn’t seem to be any exterior sound videos with your setup. Also just wanted to thank you and say that I love your BRZ videos and you are one of the main reasons why I purchased mine a month ago with a MT (my first manual as well) and look forward to more of your videos and driving!

Thanks man! Glad I could help - I'll try to record some exterior sound clips here, soon - been traveling since posting this and haven't had a chance. I'd say overall volume under full throttle is louder, but when cruising at 70-80 on the highway, it's about the same, if a little quieter. The corsa reflective sound cancelling tech actually seems to work a bit better to reduce drone with the header, which was a pleasant surprise. This engine with this header and exhaust has some really interesting characteristics that I enjoy - in the lower rpms it has a bit more of the subaru boxer rumble, but in the higher rpms, it's retained a lot of that FA20's high-rpm character. This is by far my favorite setup that I've experienced, and for what I was wanting, it's perfect.

I noticed under your mod list, you had the clutch spring removed. How did this influence the characteristic of the car in terms of gear shift time and pedal feeling? Do you prefer to have it on or off?

Clutch feel improved drastically, it’s a little heavier too, feels just about right. It’s a little easier to drive and shift smoothly without the helper spring imo

are you saying 850R? its hard to make out in the video. if so Im impressed. Ive been a volvo lover since I had my 97 850t5. loved that car. if this can be faster than the volvo Id be happy. Im loving my 2013 frs, but the torque dip kills me. i always sound like im trying way to hard when im trying to dig my way out of the dip zone lol

I know that you open flash tuned this car a while back but later removed the tune because you were "missing some low end torque". Do you feel like this version of the tune is just better, or is it the addition of the header that made the significant difference? Why not get uncatted for MORE power? Also, I know that you also had an e85 tune for a while. If you had an abundance of e85 stations in your area or a flex fuel kit would you run e85? Last question. Do you mind disclosing how much extra a custom tune from Shiv (for a specific header) costs, and how likely is it that the average Joe could get a custom tune from him? Thanks for the video. I was SO excited to see this one especially.

The header made a significant difference, the tune brought even more power, torque, and better drivability out of the car. It has a nice, meaty, refined feel to it now. Uncatted would just be way too loud for me, especially with the Corsa exhaust. I have a decent amount of E85 stations in my area, but I just don't care enough about the extra power to go through the hassle. This wasn't a custom tune, just the 3.0 beta uel (for catted headers, not uel+ for uncatted). Now the same tune is in the 4.0 beta downloads on the oft site! Glad you enjoyed it! I've been super excited to get the car to this point. It's done! I'm very very happy.

I just put firestone indy 500's on option lab R716's. I have so muh grip I couldn't break loose if I wanted. But I do want a borla uel and the edlebrock eforce supercharger kit. Mine is a 2019 TRD edition. Looks good as is with coilovers and oversized wheels but needs MORE POWWAAAA

@@nthgth I haven't due to some financial reasons but I have decided to go turbo instead. Yeah the catless headers along with a new resonated only front pipe makes the exhaust smell rich. I'm sure a tune will help eliminate that. Headers where a mistake since I'm going turbo but it's all good

Currently have a Invidia R400 (between N1 and Q300) and looking into catless UEL for future (from what I've been told, catless provides best gains over catted but louder) but I'm wondering if its best to also go for down and front pipe as well, however noise is a concern on partial throttle and daily-ability :/

Yeah I have a friend with full catless EL headers & front pipe + no resonators through a Blitz single exit and it gets real raspy anytime he touches the throttle..

dead monk Somewhat subjective, it sounds more 'raw' and you hear more vibrations but much less tolerable for daily driving (like how people don't like drone). Gives you more of a 'racecar' feel I suppose 😂

How does your mom still like the ND? they're adding 26 horsepower to the ND2 apparently but I'm not looking to trade mine in for the extra power. I assume she will still keep the RF?

UEL will get you more low end torque, might have less reliability than EL because there is uneven pulses of exhaust going through and thus more unbalance and harshness than EL .

Hey topher, regarding your exhaust system, have you ever heard the DC sports SS catback exhaust? I’m debating between it and the corsa exhaust. Just trying to figure it all out

I honestly don't know much about other systems besides the Corsa. I've really enjoyed this catback though in the last 3+ years of owning it. It's the perfect daily setup, and with this header it really rips. Just took it on a 600 mile road trip last weekend and it was basically silent cruising on the highway, too. Really impressed with how well this whole setup works. It kind of does it all.

Sweet. JDL catted or uncatted? Just know that if you go with un-catted headers, the corsa will be super loud (as will any exhaust). If you really want to get a feel for this setup, or with a stock header - watch any of my videos with headphones on and you can get a better idea of waht it sounds like with the binaural audio. TheTopher trust me bro I’ve seen every video you have on the brz, you’ve given me most of my mod choices. My current build plan is to get the OFT, then the JDL headers catted, then the corsa exhaust. And I’ve done my research regarding the noise which is why I wanted to get the corsa and JDL with cats because they will give me good noise no drone. That’s the goal. By the way could you please make a video of your current set up running E85 if possible. I’d love to see the result

won't be much, nor does it matter. what matters a lot more is the driving dynamic that changes and the changes in power delivery. Killing that mid range torque + refinement is the only reason you should consider this rather than power.

I think the LS swap (small light engine with tons of linear power) is a far better option than a finicky forced induction build.

Actually ended up taking off the cai and it ran better and retained its power over time. With the cai I noticed it losing the extra grunt from the tune over the course of a couple months...

See my comments from about a month ago: I have an OFT tune & the FT-86 catted UEL header and I run 93 octane gas (US). Prior to modification I was getting about 30.6 mpg, after the header and tune it dropped to 29.1 mpg. I am not entirely sure that the mods caused the 1.5 mpg decrease in gas mileage; the tune and header may have encouraged a slightly more aggressive driving style on my part. However, the OFT tune's A/F map does alter where the A/F map is lean or rich, often (from what I can tell) being contrary to the stock tune. OTOH, many have reported no change in mileage. Remember, in stock tune highway speeds are right in the middle of the "Torque Dip" and the OFT tune (and the header) fill in the dip, so highway mileage can be more efficient. But, because drive-ability & performance is so much better now I now tend to treat highway traffic like slalom cones and drive faster, using more gas!

Art Valdoz I have koni yellows on my rx7. In full soft they are floaty like a boat soft and comfy. Great choice for daily duty.

Ahh, okay. If you can find a set of 2017+ 86 suspension for cheap, you can't go wrong. The Konis are pretty good too, but personally I'm going to swap on the 2017 86 suspension onto the car later this summer. It rides great and handles way better than the stock 2014 BRZ setup.

That's how I feel, a bit bored. Maybe I'll do the header. Mine has a Borla axle back exhaust on it, all other exhaust parts are stock. Wondering how that will interact with the header. I'm craving more power and was thinking about a Camaro SS 1LE, hence not putting anymore money into BRZ mods. But I love the BRZ and it's 29mpg, especially since I drive 500miles per week. It's a great pairing with my V8 4Runner which doesn't get great MPGs. I don't know if I should have two V8 cars that don't get good gas mileage, given how far I have to drive. Perhaps a header will make the BRZ a little more fun for another 20k miles before I sell it.

Sweet! You'll love it, the car is so much more powerful. I honestly wasn't expecting it to be this good. If you can, try to get your hands on the specific FT86 UEL tune. Or...OFT just released v4.01 OTS beta tunes on their downloads page. I read on forums that the Stage 2 (as opposed to Stage 2+) tune is for catted headers, but might want to confirm.

I do appreciate a fatter non-dipping torque curve. However, I do object to this "I don't have to down shift from 6th to pass"... It's a 4-cyl engine. It's a stick shift. You downshift as needed. Isn't that the whole point? Still, if I get a BRZ, this is the first mod I am getting. A bit loud to be polite, but I am sure that can be muted.

Without an aftermarket exhaust I imagine it’s pretty muted/same as stock but with the extra grunt. The Corsa does get pretty loud with this header, but it’s still very livable

I was working on the new Miata in the garage, and honestly didn't want to deal with it (cold and rainy outside) so I took it to Boost Controlled Performance and they installed it for about $300

Ok... this whole thing with OFT & Headers is a little bit over hyped. After driving and owning Lord knows how many BRZ and FRS. Let me give you some real feedback. It's not a bad setup at all. But it won't make you the next NASCAR either lol. The mod will only give you 200whp, which is not bad. There will still be minor hesitation between the RPMs 3-4. The powerband will be within RPMs 5-7 to give you a power gain. This gain will be enough to make you competitive and fun to play around with. There isn't much of a difference between EL and UeL in terms of power. Both activite in the upper RPMs, meaning you gotta Rev the crap out your car to see the power lol. Lastly, this setup will only do you justice if you have all the parts (header, overpipe, mid pipe, catback). Otherwise, you won't see major effects. Minor things to consider.

Whirling Music , i took the car to a toyota specialist, Fensport in Cambridge. It was a bolt on kit, HKS V2 Supercharger, they upgraded the clutch to cope with the extra grunt, running at 290bhp, a plate is still restricting the Supercharger, which is capable if 400bhp, but need to forge engine internals, my next goal. Before i supercharged it, i put a de-cat stainless exhaust on, but not from manifold, need to do this too in the near future and also upgrade fuel injectors when i save enough to forge👊💫👍

I upgraded the brake discs to drilled and grooved with better ebc yellow stuff pads, kept original brake callipers. Put tein lowering springs on with yellow koni adjustable shocks, 18” 225/40 bola b1 alloys, better grip/better handling/stops better.0-60 in about 5secs now, top speed 150mph, car feels sweet.

CJ R. The 860 model came out in 2017, now Toyota has 2 trims for the 86. One is the 86 you have with the stock trim and the 2018 model is called the 86 GT with all the new screen, push to start and all the premiums that the BRZ premium has.

dead monk hp gains varies dude. but since me and my brother own the same 86 , header with oft tune you will probably will be gaining around 32 hp . Around 237 hp in total for a manual car. You will notice the difference right away

With the power gain and weight of the car, your probably looking at roughly the same performance as an S2000 (S2000 being a bit heavier) to put things in to perspective. Which is pretty good for the money. It's about as far as you can go without a turbo/supercharger though.
