Evan (Ashton Kutcher) wonders if Kayleigh (Amy Smart) still loves him, even though in this reality she is with Lenny (Elden Henson) and he is crippled.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Final Destination 2 screenwriters Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber make their directorial debut with the sci-fi thriller The Butterfly Effect. Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher with facial hair) wants to free himself from his disturbing childhood memories. As a kid, he often blacked out for long periods of time and tried to detail his life in a journal. As a young adult, he revisits the journal entries to figure out the truth about his troubled childhood friends Kayleigh (Amy Smart), Lenny (Elden Henson), and Tommy (William Lee Scott). When he discovers he can travel back in time in order to set things right, he tries to save his beloved friends. However, he finds out that relatively minor changes can make major problems for the future. The Butterfly Effect also stars Eric Stoltz, Ethan Suplee, and Melora Walters. The title was inspired by the story A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury.

That right there is what makes this movie so sad. It's true. No one will ever love her as much as he does, but they can't be together either because someome's life always gets ruined everytime he goes back and tries to fix it. Two ppl who are meant to be and can't make it work, that is the definition of a tragedy.

Trust me guys. Make sure you tell everyone you know about this film. It deserves to last forever. He should have got an award for this movie. It’s so god damn underrated. This scene and the bath scene just after totally breaks me. As a grown man of 38 I totally felt that pain for someone. That wanting what is no longer yours. He absolutely captures it on film to the exact emotion. Hurts even watching it. Well done Kutcher man. You truly deserve morr

It’s a good movie and he’s a great actor in it but.. OSCAR worthy? lol.. no. Well. Actually, now that the Oscar’s mean essentially nothing but a virtue signaling war and they’re given based on skin color or gender vs talent, then yeah, it’s probably better then at least a dozen films that have won awards in the last decade and he’s probably a better actor then the majority of the the “best actor/actresses” that have won, based not on their merit and talent, but on something else that should have nothing to do with the award.

The movie was ahead of its time I think. It didn't get the credit it deserved because of the plot. Back then people thought it was ridiculous, time travel. Years later, we've evolved and become more open minded to ideas and appreciative of the art of story writing and acting.

Dude terminator came out in the 80s, Star Wars in the 70s, The matrix in the 90s. All of those movies are well loved and have very crazy ideas and terminator even has time travel. 1:53 😭💔💔 This broke my heart! He was right, no one was ever going to love her as deep as he loved her. They were made for each other but couldn’t be together in that lifetime. No one else would have went through hell and back like he did just in hope that maybe they could finally be together. This scene is so crucial because Evan discovers that Kayleigh only stayed with her father to be with Evan, but in turn, it costed her brother's or her own childhood. I never understood why Evan didn't revert back to when he talked to her father before he made the Robin Hood video like he had before, but instead tell him to care and love both his kids and not just his daughter.

You've got to at least give a nomination for Amy Smart in how much she masterfully changes her appearance and demeanour of Kayleigh in all multiple outcomes/scenarios. Truly a most underrated performance in a otherwise interesting but completely wasted film.

Something I picked up in this scene after a recent re-watch, is how clearly Kayleigh and Evan are actually soulmates. When asked if she could see them together, and she openly says yes and eagerly details how she's envisioned it -- she's not patronizing him or humoring him out of pity, or for the sake of the question. The way she smiles and looks at Evan, she genuinely has deep and persistent love for him, but due to her experiences of this reality (and being raised mentally healthy and stable) has deeper loyalty and respect for her relationship with Lenny (something Trevor would also want from her if she was with him). It's what makes this hold thing even more tragic. Aside from the universe where Lenny kills Tommy (causing everyone to be the most split up and damaged) Kayleigh always loves Evan back.

This is the most important scene in the film, because it allows us to see that even Tommy could be inherently good. That's why Evan attempted suicide. While it cost him Kayleigh, everyone he cared about turned out for the best in this outcome.

We go thru phases of love in our lives, high school loves, college/young couple's love, and if you're not married by then, you really just play the field from that point. Or you could be married but not to someone you'd truly expect to be married to, but did for convenience. Measure and count your steps as you make your decisions in life, don't get married or don't have kids until you absolutely know for sure that if you can't live without the other, you will be miserable your whole life no matter who comes along.

I went to go see a random showing of this movie at a local theater. When Kayleigh and Kenny spot Tommy in the distance and he comes over to say hi all friendly and spiritual. I don't know why but everyone in the theater started laughing when this version of him appeared.

I mean you have to admit this movie (intentional or not) has some dark humour about the different outcomes, just for the changes of dinámics too, before this Tommy was basically the villain of the story and he was the More mean of the group by difference even before the explosión, so seeing him not just like a nice guy, but a religious goddyly good guy that wanted to help everyone was too Much xD

I just decided to get divorced. Not because I don’t love my wife or because she doesn’t love me, but I think we’re realizing we’re better off apart because we can’t control ourselves when we fight and it gets nasty. I get how Evan feels. He wants to be with her but realizes it’s the for the best if he’s not. It’s a sobering, heart breaking realization.

This movie right here is the perfect example of why movie critics have no idea what they’re talking about and why I ignore their ratings completely on Rotten Tomatoes and only look at the audience score. On Rotten Tomatoes The Butterfly Effect has a 34% rating from the critics, which means it’s awful. It stops counting at 250,000 so who knows how many actual audience reviews it actually has but it has an 81% rating from the audience. Is it one of the all time best movies ever? No, but it’s very good.
