Ted Polkoye Not en masse,and that was only on a small portion of the Eastern Front. The Swordfish were only used in naval battles, they never did any over-land ops. The way the author describes it is like the dude fought in WW1 style conditions; endless trench warfare, and biplanes fighting overhead. It would have largely been blitz warfare, with prop-driven fighters (and later jets) roaring overhead.

Ender Wiggin There were entire air divisions made up of biplanes. In fact the Russian B-2 (I believe that's what it is don't crucify me if it isn't.) which is a biplane was flown by women pilots who wanted to serve.

Oh they exist, it's called the Eastern Front. You could be a Soviet soldier being executed under the No Quarter policy created by the Soviet Union never signing on to the Geneva Convention. You could be a 16 year old Ukrainian conscript put on guard duty of a concentration camp and witnessing the emaciation of the people inside when supplies ran low toward the end of the war, and being forced to stack their corpses like cordwood in secluded areas of the camp for hygiene purposes. You could be one of the 3 million German soldiers who were captured by the Soviets and either mass executed or sent to a gulag, of which only 500,000 ever returned home. You could be a young Eastern European or German girl who gets raped and killed by Soviet soldiers. You could be a Russian in Leningrad, or worse, Stalingrad during the German Siege of either city and either be cannibalized or resort to cannibalism, or starve to death just because you lost your daily distribution coupon (Citizens only ate two slices of bread during the siege). You could be one of the Soviet minesweepers whose job it was to walk and step on mines to clear a path for Soviet tanks. You could also be a Soviet citizen in Brestskaya who gets used as a human shield by the Soviet army against German machine gun fire so Soviet Soldiers can advance. I would say the worst one would be if you were assigned to the Dirlewanger Brigade and were present when Oscar Dirlewanger gave the order to murder 500 school children in Belarus using only rifle butts and bayonets, for no other reason than his own sadistic satisfaction. You didn't see any of this on the Western Front. To be honest, Hogan's Heroes (even though it is a comedy) is a fairly accurate portrayal of life as a captured Allied soldier in a German Stalag, and it was purely because the Allies and the Germans both signed the Geneva Convention.
