There are plenty of small guys that played in the NHL that prove you’re never too small to play hockey. Marty St. Louis, Cole Caufield, Alex Debrincat, Mats Zuccarello and Nathan Gerbe!

Growing up, I always felt sorry for myself being short. Gerbe showed me that instead of whining, I should put that energy toward something positive

I like these career videos on more obscure, lesser known players. If you watch hockey for any length of time, you probably know about the big names, even the ones from the 80s. But it's interesting to hear stories about players who don't get the same recognition, who worked hard to get there, or were just great characters of the game.

Loved him as a Sabre. We had this mini excitement in around 2011. I remember being at sold-out preseason games that cost $100. It was fun. I hope we get back to that feeling.

I always loved the passion that Gerbe played with. He is living proof that “it doesn’t matter the size of the dog in the fight, but rather the size of the fight in the dog.”

As another 5’4 short king, I adored Nathan’s time in Columbus. Really made me not feel as bad about my height. Fighting Sanheim after flattening Giroux and the pics with Chara will always be legendary to me. Love ya, Gerbs.

Nathan Gerbe scored the tying goal to make the score 3-3 against the Flyers back in April 2011 sending the game to OT. That point secured Buffalo a playoff spot in 2011, the last time Buffalo was in the playoffs. Always loved Gerbe as a Sabre, and was sad when they bought him out.

First time I ever saw Gerbe was at the 2008 Frozen Four. He was awesome and got a hat trick in the semis and two more goals in national championship. That was probably the highlight of his hockey life.

I loved seeing Gerbe play for the CBJ. He was a high energy guy who always gave 100 percent. When he hit the ice, people rooted for him and he seemed to give s spark of energy to the rest of the team as well!

I'm so glad that THG did a career video on Nathan Gerbe. Short players can make it to the NHL if they work hard enough and prove that they can fill a need for a given team.

My favorite Sabre for the longest time. Just a little ball of energy whenever he stepped on the ice. Remember seeing a picture of him showing off his legs, dude was built like a tree trunk 😁 Mad respect for carving out such a long career at the highest of levels of hockey - happy retirement Gerbs 👌🏻

Wow, wasn't expecting a Gerbe video today. Does everybody get one from THG when they retire? Glad to see it. He was popular in Columbus. Gerbe was hurt all last year. He started the year on Season Opening Injured Reserve and never came off. Someone in his position isn't coming back from that at age 35.

I am 5'6" I was always measured with my skates on as a player so I was listed at 5'8" or 5'9". I would turn the your too small stuff into my reason to push harder. I was a pest and a goal scorer but could also play tough defense. But after my second knee injury it was over. GOD's plan was better as my life has been amazing!!!

I was on the small side too, they never resorted to measuring with skates on tho lol in every sport where size matters coaches, managers etc will add or subtract inches or lbs to make a prospect more appealing

I'm Nate's size and missed my shot in the bigs because of my height so I've always had a soft spot for a hard working grinder who used his hustle and drive to make himself 'play big'. It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.

I didn’t know Gerbe was 5’4”. The Sabres had both Tyler Ennis and Nathan Gerbe which were considered “small”. Nathan had a decent career, considering he had to get over everyone telling him he was too short! Nice!

My favorite Gerbe memory was him throwing a glove punch into Charas chest that had literally 0 effect. But he was a tiny baby made of grit and heart. The fact he ever made it to the NHL and wasn’t afraid makes him an all star to me.

A 5'4" firecracker that played the game like he was 6''3" 200lbs. I believe he suffered a bad knee injury his last year. Sure it factored into his retirement. A fan favorite in Columbus
