THE CARNIFEX IN WARHAMMER 40000 The Carnifex is the most famous of all of the Tyranids but, strangely, not just in the lore, but also in the game itself. The Terror of the Carnifex has led to a known tactic being dubbed the use of a 'distractifex'. I explain exactly what this is, along with the actual setting lore for the horror. NEW CHANNELS! I took a Carnifex of mine to a scale model club last month. None of the old dudes there knew what a Carnifex was, but one said it looked like a T-Rex crossed with a scorpion. I’d say that’s apt.
Have they upgraded the model from 2nd Ed.? The Tryranid range is almost as out-dated as the elder… When made of lead & then white metal, you would always see one missing at least one of thier 4 arms from rough handlings 😂
@@zraal3759 Cheers for the update… Had a look on GW’s website; the Carinfex model looks decent & the Flying Swarm Lord 💯; shame the Genestealers & Lictor models still look awful… haven’t played 40k since 3rd Ed.; loved Space Wolves & the Rhino Rush tactic + 14 Blood Claws & Wolf Priest in a Land Raider + Wolf Scouts with melta bombs deep striking + Long Fangs in a Razor Back being able to split fire onto 3 separate units… sweet revenge against 2nd Ed. Cheese Eldar Armies lolz Was going to get back into with an Imperial Guard Army; a toss up at the time between Death Korps of Krieg or Kit Bash a Pratoriean Guard - (Inspired by the Battle of Big Tooth River Diorama) As still listen to the audiobooks and still enjoy the setting as a whole… It’s just the shoehorning of Primaris Marines for I.P. reasons; has put damper on everything, with the transition away from GrimDark & more towards traditional Sci-Fi…
The Carnifex was my whole reason for collecting Tyranids, my interest in the big guys spans way back to when I a young boy playing a top down 40k shooter called “Kill Team” on the PS3, there is a segment from it that I vividly remember where your chased down a long corridor by a Carnifex, you can’t even properly fight the thing, you just have to run and shoot while loud scary music played, and if it caught up to you, you were killed there and then. I used to fear them, now I control them.
What I love about Tyranids are their takes on the typical units in an army. The Carnifex is essentially just the equivalent of a Lehman Russ tank, adaptable, effective but they feel so different because they still are Tyranids, they need to be monsters in melee. In essence having a melee battle tank is just so Tyranids
Thank you so much for all of your generosity brother KB N. I am sorry ti took so long for me to respond. I am not used to this sort of thing. Please forgive me. Have an amazing christmas brother. :) *bows to brother KB N*
Beautiful work, Baldy. It’s rare to see my dear, sweet bug sons done justice like this. This is what 40K’s about for me. The unspeakable monsters that desire only to devour us whole.
A Carnifex charging through a choke point followed by two broods of gene Stealer is brutally effective. But must be timed to perfection. I’ve destroyed two squads of terminators this way and caused another group to break and run. That was a game I played many years ago. I wonder what the rules are like now for the Carnifex.
They’re better than ever. No longer are they a distraction unit, designed to take fire, as 9th edition is way too killy for such a tactic. They’re a cost effective monster in their own right, and most lists have at least 1 or 2
Living Mythology is seriously good stuff. Ive studied most of that stuff in school, but its fun to get spoken about with Uncle Baldies voice.Breathes in a special kind of live. :3
I didn't think that at the end of a super interesting video about Carnifex I would also get a valuable lesson for the game! I play Aeldari myself, the proud and resilient people of Iyanden. I really like the idea of putting a unit of 10 Wraithblades with shields in front of my cheeky and confident rival, a T'au player! The thought of him wasting all his, oh so highly praised, firepower into the wraiths while my aspect warriors dismantle the gears of his war machine.... Glorious!
Brother Baldermort! Another great entry. I have to admit I’m one of those old sods that really knew very little about these monstrous creatures, but I do now, chilling 😮 BBB! BBB! Indeed!
These butchers of the Tyranids have proven to be one of their most dangerous bio-forms that they have created as they could kill anything in their way if it isn’t a super heavy vehicle with enough firepower to flatten entire battlefield, but nevertheless these monsters will continue to plague every battle that the Tyranids Swarms will be.
21:09 Wise advice indeed. Both in WH and in REAL life. I love it when I’ve been tricked in games because it’s funny and a learning opportunity at the same time. 👍🏼
I have fond memories of the old 2nd edition carnifex model. At the time it seemed monstrous! And in third it had strength 10! Practically unprecedented at the time. 🙂
I have to admit, whilst I hate playing against these things with my metal legion, I do love the Carnifex model, it is one of my favorite designs of Xenos :) I even have a couple on the shelf to look at
As a Nid player from 2nd edition to 4th edition. I always loved how greatly they improved the Carnifex's design (look up the 1st edition design if you don't know it, lol). I was always a sucker at buying the latest Carnifex models. I still have 6 of them even though I didn't always field the Carnifex. Honestly I usually was the oddball Nid player who didn't rely on my monstrous creatures, as I loved to roleplay as the hive mind and always field different nid army builds and swapped out gear on my models so players who knew me couldn't predict my units. There's the 1st edition, 3rd edition and 4th edition... and the artwork in this video is all 4th edition. Edit: Lol! Did that too, used my Carnifex as a bullet sponge too, and my opponents realized far too late my other units were my true treats. Be it guants (especially when you set up crossfires too) or warriors. What matters with Nids is position, more than who dies. Edit 2: Hell yes! Some of the best matches I had were losses! Always winning is boring, and plotting your next battle to overcome your worthy opponent is an incredible feeling. I gladly took on Necron players all the time, and nids usually lose badly to them. I got really really good at fighting Necrons compared to many other Nid players I knew of or heard of. Still only won half the time after insanely hard fights, but the emotional rewards of doing so were incredible.
Oh hell yes!!! My favorite unit from my favorite faction! Ever since 8 year old me saw that glorious 2 page spread of Old One Eye in the 3rd Edition Tyranid Codex!!!!!
Great video and the Carnifex is horrifying to right in Only War or Dark Heresy. Even in Deathwatch its a hard opponent and I have never died to one as an Astartes the threat is always there.
One of my favorite experiences is being beaten by a skilled and foxy player. When you described that belly laugh it reminded me of all the times I have been beaten in other games, and the delight of seeing such craft from the pointy end of the sword instead of its hilt.
"Nay, Nay, Thrice Nay!" The little Servitor scanned some classical diologue while working on that Mythology channel.. Blood for the Blood God! Skulls for the Skull Thrown! Farts for the Inquisition! Comments for the Algorithm!
I always ran a scythed hyrodule when I played. It was a perfect distractofex as they are about 4 times the size of a carnifex and drastically more intimidating.
Haven't touched Warhammer in more than twenty years. Always loved the lore, only fell back into it recently thanks to the efforts of those madmen over at Flashgitz. So... Not gonna lie... the main reason I am here is because I saw you screaming about pineapple on pizza and it was the greatest thing I ever saw. Which brings me here. Glad I checked it out and thanks for the content.
Despite being a Tau player, I love creating whacky things for my friend's Ork army and one of my favorites was an all melee Looted-Carnifex. It had sentinel legs and two of its arms were from an Ork dread (amongst other crude and nutty cyber/biomechanic additions). Then it got stolen by his roommate's crazy ex gf. 😩
I cannot number the computer games and tabletop RP, where I have tried Distractifex tactics in one form or another. If I'll ever get back to tabletop 40k, I will build an army around Old One Eye and retinue of Carnifexes!
AHAQ! I usually feed my opponent Sanguinary Guard. :) They look great, scare people and can (but don;t often) hit like a sledgehammer. And the opponent gets such a rush from blowing my 'pidgeons' off the board. I wail and lament, then whistle and slaughter them, as they are exactly where I want them to be. But in larger games? I go with a Leviathan dread. Again, as its so flash, people love killing it. Gives them a real thrill. :) I believe they honourably take the hit for the glory and victory of the chapter. :) *bows to brother Black*
Lol....... U're Grand narration is always a treasure. Offering a measure of reality in a realm of fantasy.......... choice! Many thanx my friend 😉 Baldermort Guides!
Tyranids are the only thing that make me miss big games. I play mostly HoR these days, and I really love smaller games. I still crack open Space Hulk a few times a year to get nommed by some genestealers. But largely, big 2000+ point games don't appeal; I'd rather play a couple of smaller games back-to-back than one large one. But if someone in my group had a big Tyranid swarm, I think that might change. I'd really like to face down a numberless swarm with a few big carnifexes in it, especially when we finish brewing our own codex updates. I'm not sure I want to paint that many models, though.
My favorite carnifex variant that was seen at the devastation of Ball was a walking rampart, with symbiote shields in place of its front limbs and a bio cannon or claw arms as interior arm. I really wanna kitbash a few or see the carnifex range expanded to include it almost like a tyranid vindicator
Throw your head back and give "the deep belly laugh of Da Kunnin'." That's immediately what I thought when you said your head back and give a deep belly laugh. I couldn't help but picture Kronan in my head, lol.
First time learning about these beasts was in White Dwarf magazine, but never learned the rules or the lore about them. So my first encounter with them was in Dawn of War 2 where I learned quickly that if I don’t take them out fast they will pulverize my squads. But in Retribution I learned that when upgraded with several carnifex with the venom cannon and send them against Deamon Kyras, it doesn’t matter the difficulties you play, he and he’s towers are getting destroyed easily compared to the other races.
I never was interested in Warhammer. I just started watching these to pass the time. But I have to say these videos are really entertaining. Much better than the story about how cpt. Picard blew up the tardis in his x-wing. In order to stop the evil Cylon empire.
Looking forward to grabbing an Eternal Penitent Telemon Heavy Dreadnought for exactly this purpose. “Yeah, he’s got 5 AP-4 D4 attacks that hit and wound on 2s. And is chiping away at everything near it. Better take it down. If you can before the Vertus Praetors sweep everything.
I'm an ork to the bone, and a necron in bone only XD. You throw a distractifex in my face, I will slam whatever I have in the immediate vicinity into it! Don't care! Imma fight it cause it's there, and I can. Sure I'll lose an objective or two, but I'm no tourney goer. If I tabled you, I won! Even if you win, I won, cause I got to fight. If I'm playing orks, I got plenty a dakka for all you gitz. Might not hit anything. But that's not the point. I just rolled 300 dice. Your move. If my necrons are on the table, you're not living through the return fire anyway.
