Top tips for better gut health from ZOE Science and Nutrition - Download our FREE gut guide: zoe.com/gutguide
Each day this week, we’re examining one of the world’s most popular diets. Putting the latest scientific evidence under the microscope, we’ll find out these diets' true impact on your health.
Today we’re talking about the carnivore diet, a zero-carb regimen centered on meat, fish, eggs, and minimal dairy, while excluding all plant foods and alcohol.
Advocates claim benefits in autoimmune conditions, type 2 diabetes, and weight loss, asserting that our ancestors thrived on this diet. However, this controversial diet does raise questions about nutrient deficiencies and excessive saturated fat intake.
In this special episode of ZOE Science & Nutrition, Jonathan is joined by Christopher Gardner, Professor of Medicine at Stanford University and the Director of Nutrition Studies at Stanford Prevention Research Center. Together, they explore its purported advantages and drawbacks.
If you want to uncover the right foods for your body, head to joinzoe.com/podcast and get 10% off your personalised nutrition program.

I’ve been on the carnivore diet for a few years now. I’m a consultant neuroradiologist in the UK. My weight has dropped from 92kg to 78kg, my HBA1c is 33. My BP has dropped from 145/90 to 115/80. I feel so much better and actually enjoy eating a restricted diet. I find I never snack or ever get the urge to eat sugary foods. This channel clearly supports literature promoting gut health. As such vegan diets / variety of diets that are supportive of gut health are championed, as such I think there is bias towards anything against the zoe agenda. I am obviously supportive of the gut health literature, I find it super interesting, but I feel this clouds judgement on any other topics presented by Zoe. I find a double thumbs down based on the fact it’s restrictive to be rather dismissive. As a doctor, I found it interesting that there was very little discussion on scientific research. If as discussed there wasn’t any good scientific data, how can such a diet be dismissed so easily? Just my opinion.

Are neuroradiologists well trained in nutrition? I'm not sure why you reference your profession here. Yes, your HBA1C is good because you aren't eating any carbs. Your weight dropped, a benefit that was mentioned in the video. I note that you didn't tell us how your LDL cholesterol or ApoB has changed - I would be more concerned about your heart health. A short 10 minute video is not designed to thoroughly dissect the science. We can probably assume that the experts Zoe brings in are giving us a fair view of the research. We can also dive into their longer form podcast content for a deeper discussions. Ultimately, you are free to review the research, but you'll find that your diet is not backed by any good science.

They have a history of negatively rating diets with restrictions. They do the same thing when discussing the low fat (10-12%) vegan diet. The most carnivores I met are clients with serious health problems, oft inflammatory bowel autoimmune diseases and they (after trying everything possible) follow carnivore diet because the meat is food they the best tolerate. But could they? Big Pharma and Big Food want to make money and satisfy their shareholders first. It's not that they necessarily want us dead, but their main concern is not really our health. And if people can heal their IBD with a meat only diet what's the purpose of finding a drug to help them to eat toxic food again? Thank you for saying this, it is so important to get this sentiment out there and not let people like Christopher control the narrative: This is NOT some hedonistic 'excuse' to eat a certain food (as Chris and his ilk constantly try to portray, this is just the latest example), but it is an extremely useful, if last resort, non-pharmaceutical intervention that can give people their lives back.

I put my autoimmune disease into remission with a meat diet. I had very severe polyrheumatic arthritis and was unable to work two years ago. Today I exercise every day and am completely free of pain. The rheumatism serology is also negative. My son also has a severe autoimmune disease - ulcerative colitis. Two years ago he was about to have a serious operation: the removal of the entire colon. It's an extreme elimination diet that people do to get back to basics and health and then choose to add more foods in one at a time to see if they can tolerate it. There are more than only 3 choices: we could also be scavengers 😁. Quite surprisingly our stomach is very acidic with a pH found only in scavengers. We live in a society where most of the people think we should eat anything, so any diet differing a bit from this norm could be qualified with the adjective "extreme". The fact that we can eat some plants doesn't mean that an omnivore diet is optimal for us and that a carnivore diet doesn't make sense. Does it make sense for you to eat plants full of toxins like oxalates and lectins even when you are not starving?
@StillTrustNo1
@StillTrustNo1 4 месяца назад
@@Noegzit Why is that surprising? Our best data indicates that the low pH is probably more for killing germs than anything else as our pH rises when we eat which true meat eaters doesn't. But sure we've obviously lived like scavengers, but that doesn't mean that its optimal for us to do so. It makes sense for us to look at science and it concludes that the hflc nonsense about oxalate and lectin scare is not supported by science - not even by a long shot. All you guys accomplish repeating that nonsense is invalidating yourselves in the imperical debate as it reduces you to a parrot that just repeats the sillyness you hear without questioning it. Add to that even the best hunters only catched something about 3% of the time, look up the work of prof. John D. Speth. Does it make sense to be hunting / running when ur starving or did we get the majority of our calories from cooked non moving tubers like the current science says? The only people who really lived on animal products through generations are the Inuits and they can't go into ketosis because of genetic adaptions - there's almost a lesson in there if one is willing to listen to evolution. Do the hflc nonsense for long enough and the human body says "nope I'll put a stop to this.

Like it or not, there are numerous medical professionals who have opted to eat in this way and who thrive on it. Generally, people find this diet not because ‘they want an excuse to eat meat’ (how insulting is that) but because they have medical conditions that reduce their quality of life. I’m not sure anyone would choose to limit their diet in this way unless it gave something back in return. Then all the off the cuff remarks such as ‘they’ll all be constipated’ etc are frankly so unscientific it beggars belief! I’m not likely to take anything like that seriously.

I just watched a long video (create 9 months previous to this video) from Gardner showing he is clearly plant biased. The video left out many important pieces of negative information against plants. Now, within seconds of listening to Garner speak on this video, I already know he is completely clueless about meat and carnivore. Which means his plant bias is even worse, because he is essentially researching it in isolation. REALLY REALLY BAD SCIENCE. Now this man comes from Stanford university, which is known as one of the universities that is WOKE and pushing ideologies of the WEF (i.e. eat plants and not meat) So sadly, this puts a HUGE dent in his ability to show he is a balanced insightful researcher. And this video proves he is lacking. He seems like a really nice guy, but when his funding forces him to arrives at conclusions in line with what the funder wants, then its value = ZERO.

Zoe -did you think a vegetarian prof is going to talk about the virtues of Carnivore diet? You need to get someone on who knows about the diet -and that heart attacks are caused by inflammation-not saturated fats. This is 2024 not the 70's. You think early man ate grass? Try Dr Ken Berry or Dr Westman or Dr Lustig -who can explain to you that sugar causes (plays a major role) metabolic diseases. Let's be fair and balanced or at least try??

I've tried every diet out there, and the best one is a balanced diet. Haha, do what you need to reach your ideal weight, then focus on eating and exercising with balance in mind. I once did a 21-day meat-only diet, and while I lost the weight I needed, I got bored. I tried fruits-only, but there weren't enough calories to sustain me. I even tried veggies-only, but my mouth was burning by the second day from the acids in my body! I also did intermittent fasting for a whole year, and it worked! I stayed thin, but my moods were all over the place. I was easily angered and saddened. What's the point of being thin if you're miserable? For me, a moderate keto diet is the best way to maintain my current weight. I simply stay under 70 carbs a day, eat plenty of vegetables, and include some meat. Calorie counting doesn't work as well because, let's face it, we don't really know how to count calories accurately - not even the scientists!

The biggest issue with all restriction diets is that the body is amazingly good at adopting to it as best it can so takes years or decades to see the damage. The carnivore diet also requires offal like liver, kidney, hearts, bone meal etc. which for most people is a big turn off. Also like modern vegetables modern meat is not like in the past as it’s hugely fattier than ever before, has less nutrients and is mostly full of added antibiotics unless you spend a fortune on it. ah yes, the inuits were a picture of health! Here's a study Published 2014 in the canadian jornal of cardiology debunking this myth “Fishing” for the Origins of the “Eskimos and Heart Disease” Story: Facts or Wishful Thinking? Findings "In fact, data collected over many decades showed that coronary artery disease is common in Greenland's Inuit population. Heart disease is as frequent -- or even more so -- among native northern populations as it is for other populations. Strokes are particularly common, and life expectancy overall was found to be about a decade shorter among native populations." I'm sure that there would be potential short term benefits (like Keto for epilepsy) when dealing with chronic debilitating illness such as autoimmune with a carnivore diet approach, as you say, it's an elimination diet so if you eliminate the culprit(i.e specific protein or inflammatory trigger/marker) you'll likely improve symptoms. However, randomised controlled trials, in otherwise healthy individuals, is likely unethical at this stage (I base this statement on the robust science/data linking high saturated fat and high meat diets to decreased longevity). Perhaps this will change in future. But currently we just don't have the data to advise that it is a holy grail, a significant health risk, or anywhere in between.

Just to leave some feedback.. I really enjoy this channel but find this series a little puzzling. What exactly is the point? No studies being provided just a bunch of opinion really. I realize having been of fan of Zoe for some time now, Christopher Gardner runs a lot of studies at Stanford.. that's why I'm surprised there's not "... and here's the data that helped me formulate this opinion...". I myself have converted to a heavily plant based diet (probably 95% or more of what I eat). I am however aware of some people that report great results on a carnivore diet. We know that for example seafood has a lot of health benefits because they tend to eat things like seaweed. That's why fish is a good source of Omega 3, so isn't the same true of meat? If the animals we eat are eating plants (grass fed beef for example) can't humans benefit from those plants second hand?

I am sorry, but I don't understand why Christopher Gardner is so sarcastic about Paleo and Carnivore. He is a 'vegan-diet pusher', and doesn't look over the wall. I am 58, diagnosed with Primarely Progressive Multiple Sclerose and the prediction was that I would end up in a wheelchair. I started for my health a carnivore diet. Have been on this since may 2023. And it is remarkable how incredible good I am feeling!!! I am never going back to my prior (vegan!) diet. My walking improved, my energy went up, my spirit lifted, no more tummy-pain, my inflammation in joints disappeared, migraine dissapeared, my gums are healthy and so on... It is almost to good to be true...but it is the full truth!!! So, don't be so narrow minded. And try to help people. You'r not helping them by being sarcastic and make people scared of other diets. These interviews with this professor are not the quality I am used from ZOE.

I'm sorry you were delt the MS card, that can't be easy living with such a disease, I'm glad you are finding some relief. Just as the keto diet was designed specifically for Epilepsy and has short term benefits at a long term cost, I'm sure that there would be potential short term benefits when dealing with chronic debilitating illness with a carnivore diet approach, after all, it's an elimination diet so if you eliminate the culprit(i.e specific protein or inflammatory trigger/marker) you'll likely improve symptoms. However, randomised controlled trials, in otherwise healthy individuals, is likely unethical at this stage (I base this statement on the robust science/data linking high saturated fat and high meat diets to decreased longevity). Perhaps this will change in future. I for one would like to see the data. A long term observation study of those already adhering to a carnivore diet would be potentially the best way to know for sure how carnivores health progresses long term and could potentially be conducted ethically as it is the participants choice to be on the diet. By long term study, I don't mean self reported study of " i feel great" I mean appropriate scientific tests conducted at regular intervals done over many decades (like what they do for the long term plant based studies), only then will the medical profession be able to base recommendations surrounding health outcomes for the diet.... i.e Dexa scans, blood tests for nutrient deficiency and disease markers( i.e diabetes etc), blood pressure, arterial and heart tests, fitness tests, ultrsounds/CT/MRI, as well as cognitive tests brain scans etc. Currently we just don't have the data to advise that is a holy grail, a significant health risk, or anywhere in between.

Carnivore diet. Look at history, anthropology, human biology and evolution. There is too much corruption and disinformation is the Nutrition space to sort though although we can say safely say that humans evolved as hypercarnivores due to the evidence present. The only way to truly confirm this for yourself is an N=1 experiment, try carnivore for 90 days, it won't kill you. Diets are species appropriate, there is no one diet fits all.

I read a number of years ago that Inuit populations pre westernisation, had almost no cancer, heart disease or diabetes. They had a diet very rich in saturated fats, omega-3 fats and protein no real plant matter. They lived short lives - life expectancy was likely to be no much over 50 years. Westernisation turned that on its head except for life expectancy due to diseases associated with western diets i.e. heart disease and diabetes.

Health benefits and weight loss that come from a carnivore diet is because processed foods and refined carbs were finally dropped from the diet. However, one can achieve the same thing with a diet with more variety like the Mediterranean diet which is more sustainable and satiating. When doing carnivore I really missed simple foods like fruits. I just couldn’t sustain the diet. The carnivore diet was too restrictive and I missed variety. I’m so much more satisfied eating Mediterranean.

@@MichelleNovalee I can understand that view. Yes, we can if we choose to eat widely aif diverse foods are available, but to need to, seems counter intuitive evolutionarily and not what we see in other species. Obesity and the morbidities that accompany it seem such a threat to health that anything that we can do to avoid it while still getting the minimum protein, fat and mineral requirements is desirable however the individual finds themselves able do that or whatever diet they can sustainably follow.
@MichelleNovalee
@MichelleNovalee 2 месяца назад
@@davidr1431 I thinks it’s because humans have diverse appetites and we have cultures built around sharing food at a table. The variety of food pleases our palette. We humans prefer to have a selection of foods to appease our taste buds. This is why we have the various taste receptors on our tongue for sweet, spicy, bitter, pungent, sour, etc flavors. When it comes to the French, there’s definitely a conundrum. How do they manage to eat the wide varieties of food and manage to stay so skinny? They indulge in sweets, fats, bread and an abundance of vegetables and fruits. I would prefer to eat like that and remember that moderation is key.

@@MichelleNovalee You may be right. There is doubtless a global association of food and company that spans cultures. Having said that, these cultural changes are probably only recently developed, say 10000 years, whereas our evolutionary dietary development spans several million years before that for most of which time the human diet would have been restricted to a much much smaller range of locally and seasonally available foods. But I take your point. Our species can eat and survive on a huge range of foods. I’m just not convinced that means we need to eat a huge range of foods.

The first minute of the episode illustrates the major problem that I have with the so called experts of today. He says carnivore diet was invented as an excuse for people to eat lots of meat cause they like meat. Listen, Doctor, I am not carnivore and don't know if it is healthy in the long run but I DO know that the majority of people who are carnivore do so out of desperation to actually get to the root cause of serious health problems for which mainstream medicine raises shoulders still. LAst time I visited a GI doctor he suggested a new pill to take for life and had ZERO advice on the diet. So if so many people reversed diabetes or other conditions on this diet don't you think you guys at Stanford should maybe put a little dollars at work and actually do some studies? Maybe this diet can be used for a certain amount of time or maybe on and off to address certain conditions...who knows...But we both know that it is not "kosher" to say too many good things about meat at places like Stanford so what do I expect...

did you try talking to a dietician? carnivore diet is basically an elimination diet (the meat isnt special what is special is that you arent eating foods that dont work with your gut) and dieticians have been doing elimination diets for a long time (to help find serious food allergies for example); because if you follow that route instead of carnivore route you'll actually figure out what foods cause you issues. opposed being pigeonholed into just eating meat, instead of eating normally minus the food that causes you issues. even though most clinical doctors aren't trained on nutrition, that doesn't mean that the ones who are don't know what they are doing.

@@dennisward43 fodmap is meant to be temporary until the dysbiosis heals (SIBO etc..) then it will gradually re-introduce foods. My instinct says that carnivore is probably wise to be approached in the same manner: to do it until certain things in the body heal and then gradually re-introduce other stuff. I actually happen to believe there is no such thing as optimal diet. Humans evolve to ate whatever they could get hands on and did not live long enough to worry about metabolic diseases. So really the question is what do we want to prevent: diabetes, heart disease, SIBO, autoimmune disease, etc... personally I would do anything I could to avoid diabetes even if the proper diet for that may cause other side effects.

I eat when i am actually hungry, which ends up being twice a day. I have added small amounts of fermented foods as well; so it would then be called ketovore diet. @@kazoz3520 There are degrees of carnivore just like there are degrees of low carb. Some people start out eating meat only, then introduce other animal products such as eggs and dairy later on.

Never done carnivore, but i know it varies, from just eating steak to snout to tail, where eggs, milk, stomach contents are eaten, then raw carnivore, so enzymes are consumed. Degrees of saturated fat differ, from what an animal eats, to what part of the animal you eat. It puts some perspective to where the omnivore diet can improve by dispelling lies. (As does vegan) i wouldnt do either, maybe vegan for a short period to evaluate performance, or carnivore as an elimination diet, then gradually reintroduce

I eat plants, but this kind of clear biased pushing of one agenda is incredibly sad. Strawmanning the carnivore diet (and the reasons why one would do it) is even worse. Have seen this more often now, and makes me take ZOE folks less and less serious as a source of trustworthy information.

4:00 The only thing I sometimes crave on the carnivore diet is sugar but meals are so satisfying that it's easy to skip that most of the time. 5:55 About those large intestines - we have no cecum, that is where fiber is supposed to be digested. Hence bloated vegans. 8:50 My own n=1 study is the only one I need and it has been going for 5+ years now :)

That’s great. It’s a pity that some other commentators seem to dismiss the significant number of people for whom a carnivore diet has been revolutionary.
@wojtek1582
@wojtek1582 4 месяца назад
@@davidr1431 It is revolutionary mainly because you cut off ultraprocessed foods and heaps of sugar. I achieved the same results that carnivores present as the benefits of their diet but using diet composed mainly of plant foods. Same results. If you would add to carnivore diet veggies, fruits, nuts, legumes and whole grains you would achieve the same positive outcomes as with the meat alone.

@@wojtek1582 I agree that cutting out UPF is revolutionary. I also don’t doubt that a mainly plant diet works for those for whom it works, just like I respect people who don’t eats plants and feel that works for them and is sustainable. I advocate for freedom to eat as you choose, with unbiased information and research not driven by products, but by truth. What I don’t like is the presentation of science as seen in this interview. Gardner should do better.

Chritopher Gardener knows the Carnivore diet has great outcomes and has heard the reasearch at a debate in a UK univercity. There was him and a vegan who both had no science behing him apposed to Dr Chaffee Nurologist who clearly outlined studies and the affect of fiber on the gut. Dr chaffee presented the data from studies and was not making assumptions as he has thousands of Patients doing great on Carnivore for years.

The success these people achieve with weight loss is a positive thing plus it's not very complicated that's part of the appeal. A lot of people don't like vegetables or they end up making smoothies out of them leading to all sorts of gut issues from overdosing. Some people just don't understand how to eat correctly that's the problem they need a handbook. Regardless they might be better off than eating processed junk. There maybe something to different blood type diets, maybe we need to revisit that topic. Or it could be a lack of diversity of gut flora and why they can't tolerate plants. I guess plants are boring to eat compared to meat for some people.

The lab work over extended time does not lie. No more need to take any suppliments and having better kidney and liver function. With less c reactive and inflamation should show what happens. Post menopausal women building muscle looking ten years younger. Glowing skin and lovely healthy hair without fungal infectios or psoriasis is the proof . Inflamatory arthritis resolved apart from previous bone damage caused by earlier diet. No need for hormone replacement and improvement in mental health.

This is ridiculous! Interviewing someone that knows nothing about a specific diet, about that diet! I mean, how low quality can you get? Try again, but get educated first on the diet. How about also having someone that does know about this diet? Also total ignorance about how weight loss occurs with Carnivore. Nor does he understand ketosis. I mean this was one of the worst videos on a diet I've seen, period. Plus, diabetes? On carnivore diet? I'm shocked at how low quality this is. All conjecture from a man with zero knowledge of the diet he's talking about! Maybe get Dr Anthony Chaffee?

Zoe chooses to have this pseudo scientist to cover this. Not all meat is steak, and the Eskimo’s primarily eat salmon and they smoke it, and eat it over the winter. Wild salmon is a very healthy food. The problem with his assessment is that it’s not controlled science. It’s not even clear that a carnivore diet is even as extreme as he says. He admits that he hasn’t even got the info on the specifics of it, and perhaps this whole thing is an extreme made up exaggeration. He claimed on this program that eating cholesterol causes a cholesterol (LDL) problem, when in fact it’s been shown that eating cholesterol causes the liver to not produce its own cholesterol. Eating carbs causes insulin production and insulin signals the liver to produce bad cholesterol.
