She knew some stuff about her son physically attacking and tormenting other students, obviously this death is not her fault, but she knew that her son was possibly psychotic, even tried to find referrals, but i suppose he acted “normal” enough to dispel the worry.

They’re already on their way the second the call comes through dude. They need the information to know what they’re walking into but i promise you the seconds they get that call, cops are already dispatched.

People are getting way bent over things they don't fully understand. Easy to blame and point fingers behind a screen after the fact.

I’ve heard so many 911 calls where the dispatcher doesn’t just say that first to reassure the panicked person on the other end of the line and it makes it so much worse. The first thing out of their mouths could easily be “authorities are being dispatched immediately, so please stay with me and try to explain what’s going on”

@@laurazepam8382 We have extremely limited information to go on here, but from what little we've got I did get the impression that at least this mother wasn't ignoring warning signs. She seemed to be aware that there were issues (even if it's hard to really grasp how extreme something can be) and she mentioned that she would push back on his messed up jokes

They said he was on the autism spectrum. He's autistic and people with autism don't process things the same as everyone else. It's a reach to automatically assume he feels a certain way with no evidence. It's a reach. He lumped himself together with criminals, that doesn't sound like he's sees himself as "privileged". He was cooperative, special needs and non resisting in any way so they didn't handcuff him. They probably didn't want to be accused of being aggressive towards someone with special needs. In today's society with people like YOU jumping to conclusions with no evidence just to have a "gotchya" moment. The way he told the officer “you can put cuffs on me” and his tone when he first told officers he had a human head and hands in his bedroom, I think he was *wanting* criminal treatment. I don’t think him saying about “people like him” was because of privilege, I think he wants to see himself as a dangerous murderer. If that idea is true, they would have kept him out of cuffs to not empower him.

I agree with you and I think the killers should always go unnamed because they are often motivated by notoriety and a desire to "break a record". In reality, people watch the video because they are fascinated by the killer and fascinated by what kind of mind he/she has and how anybody could do what he/she did. Also, we like to feel good about ourselves morally and one way to do that is to compare ourselves with the worst of the worst.

I mean there wouldn't be thousands of people feeling sad for Warren and having increased empathy and understanding for homeless people if Brian hadn't done what he did. Nobody would ever know who he was. I'm obviously not condoning what he did, just pointing this out.

Crazy that so many people describe him as such and are not surprised but no one stepped up and was like "Uhm, maybe the guy should go and get some better care".

Do you have any idea what the mental healthcare system is like in the US? The price of care alone is astronomical. They probably did step up and tell people that he seriously needed help. They probably lived in fear that he would shoot up the school. Literally everyone could have stepped up and tried to get him help, and it most likely still would have failed.

My mother worked as a teacher for kids aged 13-15 for well over a decade, and she has said that you can see how some people will commit horrible crimes and it's just a matter of time. And there is not much anyone can do, because you can't force an innocent person to get psychiatric help or whatever just because you think they seem like they might become a r*pist or m*rderer at some point in the future.

My best guess is they want to keep him calm and "friendly" to be able to get as much information out of him as possible. With a DUI you know exactly what you've got, you do an easy test and that's case closed right away, but with something like this you need cooperation. The voiceover mentions several times that the officers are trying to build rapport and get him to talk, that one officer even pretended to be interested in and impressed by his knowledge of body decomposition to get info out of him. That all being said, they should most definitely have handcuffed him

They could say that though. Its a lot easier to give additional information when you have assurance that help is coming. When they dont tell you someone is coming and just keep asking details it can feel like theyre making you “prove” that help is needed and that causes additional distress.

Yeah and a large part of the questioning isn't to actually get all the little details, it's to get the caller to focus on a task so they dont lose their absolute shit at such a horrifying scenario

Probably because having stems on you in direct evidence and in this situation he (at the time) was still “innocent” and they need to tie him to the crime first. You can’t handcuff off hearsay and assuming.

@@liz3169 A bag of body parts isn't "hearsay". The police could easily justify cuffing him out of fear for their own safety, and that would be an entirely reasonable fear in this case.

Serial killers were famous in the 70s and 80s as well. I don’t think giving them catchy nicknames like zodiac killer and night stalker is much better. True crime includes books and any journalism about the crime. Some people cross the line of making it into entertainment but informative true crime content is not bad in itself

But that is because you don't actually know how 911 works. They are asking questions and THEY have sent for the response. They have to get as much info on potential dangers as fast as possible. They may not have the time to calm the mother's nerves, because informing the officers of potential dangers is more important. They don't know how close the closest responding officer is. See they sit in front of a computer and on that computer they are also relaying information to dispatch. That is why in like 98% of all 911 calls the Operator keeps talking trying to find out about the situation and the person says "just please send someone" and they almost always respond "they are already on the way" But you need to answer my questions. You think it's being dumb, but they are doing their job. Also, in most areas the protocol is to send a unit even if it's a miss call to 911. They send people to check because, you never know if someone has grabbed the phone and hung up on the person or IF someone has entered into the room with a gun trying to control the conversation. That is why the 911 operator is trying to obtain WHERE THE SON IS. It is to increase the situational awareness for the officers who are about to come in contact WITH A KILLER. Also, they do have to try to figure out if it is a prank or true. Regardless, the entire time they are asking questions they are communicating with dispatch through the computer.

You are right, and it does contribute to the stigmatization to those with autism and ADHD. It does matter to this case however. Many school shooters were autistic (Elliot Rodgers, Nicolas Cruz, Adam Lanza, Seung-Hui Cho, probably more) and they did what they did because of total social or romantic rejection, obsessions with murder, and lack of theory of mind. It matters to Brian's case because the autism here clearly contributed to the fascination and obsession with forensics, anatomy and murder as well as the lack of empathy (which might just be alexithymia paired with a lack of theory of mind). I mean I also have ASD (and maybe ADHD) and I have had people jokingly call me a school shooter or not so jokingly (even though I would never ever do anything even comparable and don't even like to kill mosquitos) and I don't appreciate it so I get the stigma. In general, society does not understand any mental disorders and usually has a stereotypical idea of what autism or ADHD means. I'm better off not saying anything God forbid they start talking to me like I am 5 and being blatantly disrespectful like I am stupid. Best thing you can do is show people you have prosocial intentions and have an air of confidence. Idk though, some people will always remain ignorant.

He definitely shows 100% signs of being highly autistic, and having lack of emotion/remorse is a huge sign. His parents should’ve had red flags from the moments his “dark humor” started being “dark” and not humorous

I was sort of implying, finding him help through a program that offers shelter. He was working, he enjoyed reading, so he seems like he'd be a great candidate. Funding is always being cut from those kind of programs though so who knows.@@ericaallisonc

In my opinion, he was not a true psychopath. From what I understand, psychopaths are manipulative, deceitful, charming, prone to rage, opportunistic, lack empathy, remorse, guilt, and sometimes shame. Brian had a combination of mental disorders including ADHD, autism, and depression that caused him to fixate on anatomy, forensics, and murder. The ADHD is involved in his lack of ability to care about future consequences and his desire for a thrill, the autism is involved in his obsession for anatomy and forensics and murder, and the depression maybe contributed to a blunting of his emotions overall. None of these ingredients are deadly on their own but a fatal cocktail is what they make when combined. He doesn't imagine people as people, he describes what he did the way that someone would describe engaging in a hobby or something. This is just my opinion and the analysis may be incomplete or wrong. Most people have a very surface level understanding of psychology which is why this looks like psychopathy or ASPD (anti social personality disorder) to them. If you want to see someone with psychopathy, look at Paul Bernardo or Henry Steiger.

@@plotofland2928 I looked up the diagnostic criteria for ASPD out of curiosity and this is what I found: "The main text of fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) defines antisocial personality disorder as being characterized by at least three of the following traits: - Failure to conform to social norms and laws, indicated by repeatedly engaging in illegal activities. - Deceitfulness, indicated by continuously lying, using aliases, or conning others for personal gain and pleasure. - Exhibiting impulsivity or failing to plan ahead. - Irritability and aggressiveness, indicated by repeatedly getting into fights or physically assaulting others. - Reckless behaviors that disregard the safety of others. - Irresponsibility, indicated by repeatedly failing to consistently work or honor financial obligations. - Lack of remorse after hurting or mistreating another person. In order to be diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder under the DSM-5, one must be at least 18 years old, show evidence of onset of conduct disorder before age 15, and antisocial behavior cannot be explained by schizophrenia or bipolar disorder." Of course I want to reiterate that I'm no professional and cannot as a layperson diagnose anyone based on a list of criteria and a few minutes of footage, but I do think he seems to hit several of those points. While depression can indeed dampen emotions, I doubt that alone could explain the complete lack of remorse he clearly feels about committing a horrific crime. Not only does he not appear to feel remorse, he appears to be excited and proud of it!
