Denmark have had great flooding disasters many years ago, up to 2% of the population dead in 1634 AD in the biggest one. But regulations and strict enforcement of them, minimum 300 meters from the ocean when building new houses, and industrialization, has made the same storm flooding 3000 times less deadly now days. Hopefully Pakistan will prioritize protective infrastructure in the future, and I’ve heard local residents has blocked some attempts, but even in a Democracy expropriation of land for important infrastructure can be necessary. As long as they are compensated for their land of course

I think Pakistan could only bypass the sedimentation issue by carving the river into meandering patterns and creating lakes and ponds as reservoirs. It would be a level of infrastructural change unheard of since the Medieval times (particularly where Genghis Khan destroyed entire aqueducts and salted the earth of some civilizations) and the Classical era (where the Hanging Gardens are concerned, as well as the creation of chinampas in Mesoamerica), but I can't think of any alternative in the long term that would allow Pakistan to survive the increasingly erratic water cycle and eventual disappearance of the glaciers. Even if they were to take on this massive endeavor, I'm not sure if Pakistan could meet its modernization / economical goals on top of the political feuds. Having a childhood friend who came from Pakistan, it makes me fearful for this country's future. I can only imagine what similar, river-dependent nations like Egypt will have to face in the future.

I heard Pakistan expert say that little was learned and implemented from some big floods back around 2010, like people still build on river banks or flood plains, that should not be allowed. I think he said Bangladesh has done some good things that should be used in Pakistan too. So parts can be prevented by taking right actions, part of it is weather and geography. Plus Pakistan population growth is big problem too for food and living, 1955 - 40 million people, today 230 million people, UN predict 2050 there will be 338 million people in Pakistan. That future is bound to create a lot of pain and suffering sadly 😥.

4:55 sediment can be released. Lloyd (Sukkur) Barrage & the others have high sediment because it is not only not cleared, but it is designed to capture water during times of drought. Basic maintenance - IE, many areas are polders - below the level of the canals. They must be pumped clear of water to the canal level (also lower than the river). But the canal grid is weakened by neglect, by building roads on top of canal walls, by illegal cuttings for summer irrigation, by deliberate breaches as communities choose to flood a different community to save their own. And yes - illegal construction in canal drain areas & riverbanks. Since 2011 the government has recognised illegal construction & provided state resources in those areas to appeal to the voters. Many infrastructure projects have stalled - mainly the Right Bank Outflow drain. These vast irrigated areas - larger than Belgium and Holland need specific drainage channels as their outflow is so polluted. In the case of these floods (predominantly the right bank downstream of Sukkur above lake Mancchar) the RBOD was supposed to drain into the lake, which then has further connection out to the sea. That's not completed. The flow was reversed into the lowlands. A second piece of infrastructure is they lake Mancchar was receiving water from Nai Gaj (to the west, off of Baluchistan). There is a huge wall on it that diverts flow from a huge area to preserve the water in the lake. Without the planned dam on the river, extreme flows will overwhelm the lake. For complex political reasons lake Mancchar was not officially discharging to the south. There are 7 main barrages which connect into a vast Web of canals. The water flow is monitored. Downstream at Guddu, we see no evidence of unprecedented water flow. At 600,000 Cusecs in peak it was 1/3 rd less than 2011. A lack of sediment is definitely an issue in the delta that is sinking causing salt water ingress, but it is absolutely fixable upriver. Pakistan is suffering a Malthusian crisis. In 100 years it has gone from 37m to 237m. 40 million in the lastdecade. It's has reasons why infrastructure is neglected.. And why it is built in illegal places. And why so many new homes have to be built. But it's fixable. The Left Bank didn't flood. The canals were closed and effective, only downstream at the final reservoir (Sanghar) was there impact. Unfortunately the people are used as props. With a 600k strong military, it is possible to go in and repair the canal walls, to pump the polders. While quick to raise money, or be seen comforting distress, there's precious little emergency engineering campaigns. 150 year old pumping stations are more likely to be fixed by locals than the state - which persisted in denying people the right to pump even after the Indus has subsided. Pakistan is fixable

From Middle English industry, industrie, from Old French industrie, from Latin industria (“diligence, activity, industry”), from industrius (“diligent, active, zealous”), from Old Latin indostruus (“diligent, active”); origin unknown. Perhaps from indu (“in”) + ūst-, ūstr-, stem of ūrō (“burn, burn up, consume”, verb), related to Old High German ūstrī (“industry”), Old English andūstrian (“to hate, detest”, literally “to be consumed with zeal”).

I just can't imagen these issues to be "unfixable": Karachi, one of the largest cities on earth, doesn't even have a proper sewer system. They know roughly when the rain is comming and no one gives a crap. Of course floods are gonna happen and of course people are gonna die. This is probably much worse in other cities. Like maybe a sewer system redirecting all the water can help? And if certain areas are especially in danger, maybe leaving the first floor empty can help preventing people from dying. Of course this requires a lot of money, Pakistan does not have, but at the very least the government could start in certain districts or certain smaller cities to figure out a strategy in regards to what works best.

They never maintain them, even though these buildings are 200 years old, they are some of the best built buildings in the country, and they just leave them to rot. Not even a lick of paint on windowsills. Then they dump all their rubbish on the streets, that amass and the council has to come in and clean the obstructions away, even though there's a municipal tip, five minutes down the road. This is just the way they live. They can't be helped.

This was not much talked about, especially given the current international news, but yesterday a major agreement was reached between Portugal and Spain on one side and France on the other. The Iberian Peninsula has not been much affected as others in its gas supply, since for Spain it comes mostly from Algeria, and for Portugal from Nigeria and others through its LNG terminal at the port of Sines. For some time, there as been the idea of connecting the Iberian infrastructure to Central Europe, in order to help alleviate the dependence on a single exporter. France has always been an obstacle, refusing any pipeline across the Pyrenees. With the Russian invasion of February and all its consequences, the urgency of this project has only increased, but up till now France remained against it, even with Germany supporting Portugal and Spain. But yesterday, the three countries reached an agreement, that in Portugal was seen as beneficial - a pipeline would be constructed between the Port of Sines and the Spanish grid, and the connection with the rest of Europe would not cross the Pyrenees, but be built in the Mediterranean between Barcelona and Marseille. And from there it can be easily exported to central Europe, giving Spain and especially Portugal with the port of Sines a new strategic relevance. Also, the project has a vision of future, being actually thinked for "Green Hydrogen", seen as an energy resource of the future, but initially can be used to transport liquefied natural gas. This is a topic easily forgotten in the hot issues of these days, but it's very important for the European energy independence and cohesion. And gives new strategic value to Iberia. A video on this topic could be very interesting, especially with this channel's expertise.
