The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, narrated by Isaac Birchall
In this chapter, feeling like a coward, Holden walks the whole 41 blocks from Ernie’s to the hotel. En route, he thinks about his gloves, which were stolen at Pencey. He imagines an altercation with the thief, but states that he is a coward at heart, and is afraid of confrontation. When he reaches the hotel, he takes the elevator to his floor. The elevator operator offers to send him a prostitute for $5, and Holden, feeling depressed agrees. While waiting in his room, he thinks again about his cowardice, and laments that it is his lack of aggression that has left him a virgin. The Prostitute, Sunny arrives, a cynical young girl with a high voice. Holden becomes flustered and even more so when she takes her clothes off. She sits on his lap and tries to seduce him, but he is extremely nervous, and lies to her claiming that he cannot have sex because he is recovering from an operation. Finally, he tries to pay her for her time and she claims that it is $10. Holden refuses to pay more, and she storms off out of the room.
