The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, chapter 14, Narrated by Isaac Birchall
In this chapeter, Holden sits in his room and smokes and remembers excluding Allie from playing a game shortly before his death, and Holden still feels guilty about now including him. Finally, he goes to bed, and he feels like praying, but his dislike of organised religion prevents him from going through with it. Suddenly, there is a knock on the door. Maurice, the elevator operator has returned with Sunny to collect the extra $5 dollars that he claims to be owed. Holden refuses, and Maurice pins him to the ground while sunny takes the money from Holden’s wallet. Maurice then flicks Holden in the groin. Holden retaliates by insulting them both, only to be met with a fist driven into his stomach. Holden then pretends to be a movie character that has been shot n the stomach, and finally falls asleep.
