The Chevy Bolt Buy Back Department is having “Technical Difficulties”

I’m this video, I wanted to pass along a quick update regarding info that I received from my repurchase coordinator. I had been unable to get in contact with my repurchase coordinator and ended up calling them. They informed me that their system had been down for about a week when I spoke to them (on Wednesday August 4th) and that it impacted their ability to send/receive e-mails or make phone calls.
I also learned that dealers who are doing trade repurchases are not being compensated at all for their time. They get their money back for the vehicles and that is it.

GM really needs to handle this with tact and care; we're all watching, and I won't buy or recommend their products if they don't! I'm already questioning whether I should recommend their products to my customers (I'm a mechanic too).

I have found your channel very helpful, so thanks! I initiated the buy back conversation with the Concierge on 8/6/21. After 70 minutes into the process they said I needed to call back tomorrow because of system problems. I was very polite and asked if they could do anything to help because all the context and information of the call would be lost. I was transferred to another person, and another person and finally got told that a representative would be calling me back in the next 72 hours (business hours). The whole process took 3 hours over their messaging system. Being polite, patient and having other work to do while on hold is critical. I am not having the positive support experience that Wrenching Fool is having, but making progress slowly.

I’m sorry to hear that you are not having a good experience so far. Unfortunately yes, they do seem to be having system issues right now, along with probably a lot more people asking for a buy back now than they were in June. I do absolutely recommend using the messenger system vs calling because that, in my opinion, is far less intrusive. Sitting in a chat window for 3 hours, while inconvenient, is far better than sitting on the phone for 3 hours in my opinion. Good luck with your buy back process. I will say that once you get connected with the individual who will guide you through the rest of the process, the communication seems to get much better.

@@connorholm6463 My guess - and it’s only a guess at this point - is that my VIN may be in that group of late 2028/2019 builds Chevy believes may be especially vulnerable. I live in the Hollywood Hills, a recognized fire area, so that could be a factor as well.

@@kengreenberg thanks for the reply! I just assumed we were all in the same boat…I didn’t realize some recalled 2019s were more vulnerable than other recalled 2019s. If that’s the case, it frustrates me that GM is only approving repurchase agreements because certain vehicles are more vulnerable than others rather than approving the agreements because of the almost 10 month long inconvenience that we are all facing. I just want a car that isn’t at risk of bursting into flames. 10 months is too long! It is especially frustrating because, where I live, that extra 10% of range is consistently enough to get me home. As a result, I always have to charge at a public charger if I’m going to be doing a long drive…so there are also financial implications. Anyways, I’m in the process of having GM reevaluate my case, so we’ll see!

I am getting more and more frustrated with GM’s lack of transparency. Everything is too vague, they need to offer something beyond just replacing cells. If I was the leadership, I would have upgraded all 2017 to 2019 cars to the newer battery packs so they get extra range for the trouble of this whole mess.

Do you know if GM will handle a repurchase on a lease in the same way? My 2021 Bolt was $40,105 but with incentives it came down to $26k plus taxes etc. Since there is no EV that isn't under the recall I would need to select an ICE vehicle. I was thinking about a truck and just let my dad drive it. But if I find a truck that's around $40k what about all of the rebates that applied to my Bolt? Wouldn't GM honor those? And then I'd get the truck for roughly the same payment as my Bolt is? $170/month? I'm currently waiting for the repurchase team to contact me. Thanks in advance for your opinion!

Sorry for the late reply on this. Repurchase offers are highly dependent on your particular situation, as well as what state you live or purchased you vehicle in due to their lemon and consumer protection laws. Basically, I can’t give you a real answer to your question because there are far too many variables. Good luck!

This is my second week trying to deal with GM. I have a case number for '17 and '18 Bolts we own. When they try to call me, the phone rings and their GM id shows up, but no voice. I call the number back and can talk to the person. Of course the person in charge of the case is different, and they connect me with their number - which goes to voice mail. During these fun interchanges I ask for an email address where I can communicate with a meaningful person. They can never give me one. So basically, their team is making a bad situation worse and pissing off their customers even more. Sounds like GM, eh?

I got the same message. Applied for buy back Aug 3, couple of weeks later got asked about dealers I wnated to work with, then a message about “technical issues.” I asked if the technical issues were because of the extended recall, answer was yes. Supposed to contact me this past week and I heard nothing. I will keep calling and emailing. I suspect the dealers don’t want to get stuck with a bunch of cars that they cannot now sell. And when will they replace batteries in all cars? How many years? I am quite concerned.

Let me just recommend that people seriously consider a Tesla Model 3 over a Chevy (LG) Bolt. Honestly, I can't imagine buying a Bolt (and yes, I own a Model 3). I did engineering consultant and design work for both Ford and GM (and others). I bought a Model 3 Tesla. I'll leave it at that.

Buy a Tesla instead...the engineering is a DECADE (at least) ahead of anything GM has to offer. They still have an "off menu" RWD single motor Model 3 available for $35k. Or wait for the "Model 2" or whatever they are going to call their $25k vehicle.

Great information! My wife tried initiating a communication with the concierge, but had not heard back so this helps explain the silence. Has there been any hints with what the dealers do when they ultimately get the buy back bolt? Does GM take possession as well as not pay the dealers their share in the buyback?
@wrenchingfool5284
@wrenchingfool5284 2 года назад
I’m not sure what will happen with the repurchased Bolts. I may ask this the next time I contact my repurchase coordinator. I suppose the answer ultimately depends on GM’s confidence in their fix and whether it is cheaper for them to recycle the battery and scrap the car, or “repair” the battery and resell the car. Technically, since the vehicle currently has an open safety recall that has not been performed (the most recent one) I don’t believe that GM can resell it at this time.

Nothing wrong with the car otherwise, so I would expect a resale after an approved replacement battery - if necessary - is installed.
@wrenchingfool5284
@wrenchingfool5284 2 года назад
Cars that other manufacturers have bought back in the past have typically been scrapped (think VW dieselgate, Toyota trucks where the frames rotted out, etc.) but may of those buybacks were because the cars were basically unsellable. Not sure what will happen in this case, but I do know that if the cars are scrapped, the batteries will be recycled. Lithium batteries can’t be scrapped.
@dennislyon5412

No business could lose a week without phone and internet contact. Perhaps they were overwhelmed with buyback requests, and - effectively - turned off the inputs to give the customers a chance to think about what’s next, or to build up inventory of the ‘22 Bolts?
@wrenchingfool5284
@wrenchingfool5284 2 года назад
Not sure, I try to take things at face value as much as possible. It sounds to me like the Reacquired vehicle management team (those who are dealing with buybacks) is a very small team, maybe only a handful of people, and they might be working remotely right now. Not really sure.

Thank you for your work and immensely informative videos. I am very tuned in to the "Big Three" approach to making and servicing electric vehicles. Since the Biden led "summit" of North American car makers, (amazingly ignoring Tesla) I expect big tax breaks to the makers and little or no support to the consumers. Issues like this Bolt battery fiasco shows me that the car makers are using their risk analysis projections from their internal combustion production lines. EV technology is new and fraught with "black holes" of failure points. This Bolt failure is a prime example. Replacing an EV battery isn't as easy or cheap as replacing a faulty alternator. Kudos to Capitol Motors in Salem for their integrity.
@wrenchingfool5284
@wrenchingfool5284 2 года назад
Honestly that’s why I initiated the buy back process in the first place. GM’s “final remedy” was an obvious sham from the very beginning in my opinion. It was an effort to “manage the risk” and reduce their costs rather than actually fix the problem. The Biden summit was kind of a slap in the face for EV supporters honestly. Their snub of already established EV manufacturers like Tesla and VW was clearly just an effort to appease the UAW, since Tesla and VW use non-union labor. That’s a topic in and of itself, but it’s just more typical politics. All about your supporters and those putting cash in your pocket, not about the best interest of the people.

@jacobdykstra8499
@jacobdykstra8499 2 года назад
I'm in California and bought two used bolts in cash from a dealer. They will refund only what you paid for the vehicle used and additionally they subtract mileage you put on the car since you bought it. I have no problem paying for mileage on the vehicle but I really would like to do an MSRP swap into a 2021 or 2022 bolt. The problem is they will only pay you MSRP if you are the original owner. So for me to get a 2021 or 2022 bolt I would have to kick in essentially $16K or so for each replacement... Why would I put more money into a GM product to solve their problem. I get that it's a newer car and I'm willing to pay for my mileage usage but I shouldn't be responsible for the cost of upgrading to a newer year car since I'm basically forced into it here. So we would only get what we paid into them. Essentially with this repurchase program we would be trading in two 2017 bolts for a new 2022 bolt. Some would argue it's fair we only get what we paid into the car but really, that can't get any remotely equivalent electric car for that price. We paid around 17K for each car and if we got that back there is no electric vehicle we could buy today with similar range and capabilities for that price. We decided to keep both our bolts and risk the statistics. We charge them outside and away from the home and use them still as normal. If they blow up... Just another case on GMs hand and insurance will pay out the vehicle. It's unfortunate they can't make it right. I will never buy a GM product again after this experience.

@@jacobdykstra8499 that take my idea of buying a used bolt and getting them to buy it back for the value of the new msrp i guess at worse they switch a new battery into the car because of the recall So at worse if i buy a used bolt check the vin an it had a recalled vin they replace the battery

GM is making plenty of money selling $80k trucks and SUVs that cost them a small fraction of that to build, so I’m not too worried about GM losing money on Bolt buybacks. Besides, electric cars are coming on a mass scale whether manufacturers are ready or not, so this is really an opportunity for GM to make some good press out of a bad situation.
