The Chevy Bolt EV Recall Bonus Nobody Is Talking About

Bolt EV owners have had to deal with a lot since the LG Chem battery fire issues started happening, but ultimately, GM has agreed to replace all Bolt EV battery packs with a brand new replacement.
So Bolt EV owners get a brand new battery pack with a brand new warranty. That's good news for all Bolt EV owners, but even better news for those that have a 2017 through 2019 model year Bolt. That's because they are actually getting a bigger battery than what came with the car, 66 kWh compared to 60 kWh. A friend of ours, Stan Jaracz, has two 2017 Bolt EVs and both recently received the battery replacement.
We conduct a 70-mph range test on one of Stan's 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EVs with its original battery pack and over 70,000 miles on the odometer. We then repeat the range test one week later after GM replaced the battery pack and we analyze the difference. Owners will find they get a hidden bonus with the new pack in the form of significantly more range than they had with the original battery pack.

Many thanks! I also have a 2017 Bolt and just got the battery upgrade. We live in the central valley of California and have never used a destination charger. From here in Modesto I can drive to the coast and back or to Yosemite and back but was close to zero when I got home. The new battery gives some relief. My wife suffered acute range anxiety. What surprises me is the warmer weather here generally gives my car 4.0 miles per kilowatt hour! Temperature makes a BIG difference. My old hot rod friends have sneered at my Bolt for years but now that gas in California is over $5.50 a gallon I get some respect. Too bad the Bolt is being phased out. I love mine.

I bought my 2019 just a few months ago with the battery upgrade. I love this car. It's a grey premier, and had 18K on it. it was 27K out the door. That includes a dealer bumper to bumper warranty for 150,000 mile unlimited years (We put 100,000 on a new c300 in 15 years so this should be good for around 20)! Thats a steal!!! the only thing I would change are the seats. they are ok, but in fairness, my other car is a 2020 Lexus 300H, so I'm a little spoiled in the seat department... My car is at 4.1KWH. Edit wife normally drives the lexus to work and back and she now uses the bolt on the weekends, so we only have to fill up the Lexus once every 6 weeks. so that was and added bonus. I was filling my c300 2.5 times a month for work, so that saving plus the mileage I get from work is more than the car payment... Plus, I can charge for free at work. This is a free car.

Impressive. And that’s with two adult men in the car for the 2nd test. I assume one person per car in the previous test, as each man in different cars last week. I drive exactly like Stan. In the winter, I generally only use the heat if it is below freezing after dark and to defrost the windows. During the day with plenty of sunlight, I never need to run the heat in the winter especially if I preheat the Bolt before I start my trip. In my previous 2017 Bolt and current 2020 bolt I tend to average 4.2 mi/kwH in the winter and 4.6 mi/kwH on mostly local driving in Northern Virginia and feather the shifter to maximize regenerative braking and staying below 65 mph as much as possible. Despite the recall woes, the Bolt is still a great car especially at its price point for those us who got them last year when they were clearing them out for the 2022 model year Bolts.

I drove 196.6 miles mostly on the interstate at mostly 65 mph with air conditioning running. Temp was about 85F. I was very surprised I only used 41.4 Kw. that is 4.74 miles per Kw or 210.58 watts per mile. I was showing 90 miles remaining at the end. That is way better than I expected. I had my 2019 Bolt battery replaced last week. On the way back from the dealership I set cruise to 65mph and drove 73 miles home, that trip only used 25% of the battery (~60F ambient) at 4.5mi/kWh efficiency. After all this time keeping the battery (mostly) between 30% and 80% it was awesome to see a GOM reading of almost 300 miles after recharging at home.

My wife has a 2017 Bolt with 72000 miles and the original battery. The dealership called yesterday and says our turn for replacement is finally here and the new battery is on order. Right now the car is estimating about 145 miles from of range due to the season and the fact that we replaced the original tires with Michelin Cross Climate 2. The original tires had better range but they were awful in the rain, especially as they aged. We were happy to trade range for better wet weather traction. Looking forward to the new battery and seeing what range we get back.

The charge curve that accompanies the OE 66 kwh batteries in the newer Bolts is a bit better in the 45-75% range. Hopefully that comes with the battery when the 2017-19 batteries are replaced, along with updated charging software.

This, to me, is the true test of Chevy Bolts and their distance. Every video I have seen has these fools claiming it has over 230 and above for distance when that just isn't accurate even in optimal conditions. Going on the Bolt Reddit forum, a lot of people are screenshotting their dash and it says something lile 300. Almost pissed myself laughing 🤣. Thank you for being real, objective and pushing it to the limits of reality; this is what new owners need to see.

Very good test and good explanation of how you guys tried to keep parameters as close as possible to those in the test with the old batter. My question is this: With the old batteries, Chevrolet has been advising that you set the max charge to 90% (and more recently to 80%), and that you recharge while it still has an estimated 70 miles or more. Did you guys charge both cars fully before the test and then run the charge state as close as possible to zero?

W/o heater the windows on our 2020 bolt tend to fog up in the winter or cold weather( heated seats and steering wheel help to not turn up heat too high) so you do need to run heat to defog windows, which reduce miles. That being said we tend to ave. 275 summer and 210 winter… driving comfortably, 50% highway. Having fun passing gas stations.

While I don't own a Bolt my electric used to do 3.9 per Kw with slightly over inflated tires. When I upgraded my Michelin all weather tires to the second generation my average is 4.0. You are right, tires make a difference. I'm thinking that the first test being done when it was colder with one person in the car, having two people in the car when it is warmer might make the comparison a little more even. Nice as the Bolt is it's a little too small for me.

The Michelin CrossClimates with the cool V-tread? I've been looking into them so I can win an argument with my father on whether tires or 4WD make a bigger impact on safety during winter driving.
@lgrantnelson2863
@lgrantnelson2863 2 года назад
@@h8GW I would say both. Front wheel drive is good in winter. I have found the Michelin Cross Climate to be relatively good in snow. Dry snow good wet snow problematic. I drive a front wheel drive Leaf and have good results. I watched a 4x4 make a left turn and slide into a ditch it couldn't get out of. Caution is the best safety. Overconfidence gets a person in trouble. I wouldn't be concerned about winning a bet. Just get the best equipment you feel comfortable with and drive carefully. The Cross Climate is a low rolling resistance tire that works well on electric cars. Might give better gas mileage also.
