In The Cognitive Continuum, we propose a theoretical framework for enlightenment based on the idea of optimal grip, which has its roots in the philosophical tradition of phenomenology. Enlightenment is all about optimal and ethical relationships between self, world, and other. The "cognitive continuum" refers to a set of neurocognitive functions, starting in insight, and culminating in the experience of mystical union. We argue that the optimal grip on reality that is characteristic of enlightenment is cultivated by using a set of practices that train this continuum of functions. The result of this training is a flexible and dynamic state of being infused with a sense of meaningfulness and connection. We will weave together the teachings of the world’s traditions of religion and philosophy with research based cognitive science to create this framework. This book will feature three parts:
Part I: Heaven - Illuminates the philosophy behind enlightenment
Part 2: Earth - Illuminates the science behind enlightenment
Part 3: The Way - Provides personal and social guidelines for the cultivation of enlightenment

Daniel Greig:
Daniel is an educator, organizer and artist living in Toronto. He studied Cognitive Science and Philosophy at the University of Toronto, specializing in wisdom, consciousness, and spiritual belief and experience. In 2015, he founded the Mapping the Mind conference, which raises much needed funds for psychedelic research. Daniel regularly hosts lectures and workshops on topics in cognitive science. He is currently writing a book with Dr. John Vervaeke on the science of enlightenment, which will be published in 2020. When not contemplating the realm of the intellect, Daniel delves in the sonic perturbations of music, writing and producing progressive metal. I think someone online stole your not real pseudonym and now they're not really pretending to be it! :)

Thanks for the discussion I found it very interesting. On format however , it did come across a little inauthentic because you were explaining things to each other that you had already discussed, you knew the other person knew what you were explaining to them and were doing it for the audiences benefit (apologies if this is an inaccurate assumption on my part), a different format might allow for a more natural conversation. Thanks.

At 19:00, those relationships among the levels of cognition are also a good picture of the relationships among all the levels of all kinds of knowledge, scientific, philosophical, artistic, etc. they don’t communicate well with each other because often they don’t see the connections, but I propose that the matrix that describes artistic expression is a good matrix to use to explain the connections among all the levels

Really enjoyed this conversation and look forward to this exciting book. Apologies for repeating my post from your conversation with Anderson, it seems relevant in both ? Whatever word one chooses to 'label' the ineffable, it is never adequate to describe the experiential knowing . - First one needs to define what God 'means' to those participating in the dialogue. I keep returning to the 'label' often used in contemporary, Nondual language : Infinite Unity Consciousness. It seems to 'fit' more readily with our modern cognition. In this conversation you both refer/allude to this 'experience' of Infinite Unity Consciousness . I find this expression of the 'ineffable' particularly useful as it is equally valid both from a Theist and Non-Theist (Atheist) position. (Jung - "I know God" = 'I know Infinite Unity Consciousness' ) Viewed through the lense of psychodynamic Object Relations, the Nondual understanding/expression of Infinite Unity Consciousness is a move into the Reparative position, from the paranoid schizoid position of Atheist/Theist . This move strikes me as central to any dialogue regarding a meaning crisis (meta meaning crisis)

I notice that you discuss 'machinery'. From an embodied cognition level, and with regards to Vispassana (which I think you practice (?)) where would the concepts of interoception, which is mostly implicit but provides a necessary background, fit within the machinery? Am a physio so am thinking about the role of 'metabolic/internal monitoring' as much as 'external (world) monitoring'?

I see this book had an unsuccessful Indiegogo campaign, I'm only finding this now but I'm very interested in such a book. Have you found another vehicle for publishing? You might consider trying the funding campaign again considering more people have discovered John's work in the past couple of years. Thanks!

I will watch out for this book - the idea of artists contributing makes it more appealing to those of us who are more at home in the realm of the imagination, metaphors and pictures. I also appreciate when the much derided and hated Christianity is also looked at beside the much praised and loved Buddhism. (Western intellectuals.) Personally I see Buddhism as dominated by the left hemisphere and balanced by meditation and body-practices while Christianity seems to be leaning towards the right hemisphere, the particulars of personhood and "relationality" ( to others and to God - and God to us, humans).

the dichotomy you described buddhism vs christianity - sounds like Jung's idea that one of dimensions of personality is Perception vs Judgement. my point is buddhists are more 'perceivers' and christians are more 'judgers' taoism is very balanced though, and I liked that John mentioned it in the series as 'religion of flow', and someone else replied in a comment that it is a religion of 'dual processing'. I really like that and I think this is closest to John's idea of relevance realisation as interaction between two opposing processes

@@SuperAlex512 This reminds me of Myers-Briggs which, although still widely used in the business environment, appears to have been superseded by the 5 factor personality traits in psychology. I wonder then if Buddhism would correlate with higher scores of openness to experience and / or agreeableness whereas Christianity encourages higher levels of conscientiousness? Not my area of expertise so I'm just suggesting.
