A detailed review of The Companion Bible (ISBN 9780825421792). The text in this Bible is printed in a bold 7.75 to 8 point font in a (mostly) single-column, verse-by-verse format. The Bible features extensive 7 point textual notes with references to 198 appendixes included at the back of the volume, which contain detailed information and opinions on a variety of subjects. This Bible does not contain color maps or a concordance, but it does provide a general index to the appendixes. The appendixes promote futurist eschatology and are dispensational in character. Charles C. Ryrie stated that the editor of the Companion Bible, Ethelbert W. Bullinger, originated ultradispensationalism, the view that the Church began after Pentecost. This thumb-indexed volume is bound in burgundy (relatively flexible) bonded leather with a paste-down construction. It is sewn, lies open in Genesis, and comes with a single burgundy ribbon marker.

I have the Companion Bible and it is still one of the best KJV study Bibles you can get. It has lots of cool footnotes and appendices. Bullinger was mighty insightful. One of my favorite appendices and footnotes is where Bullinger points out that there were actually FOUR criminals crucified with Christ...NOT the commonly held two. Very interesting. If you're a student of the Bible, everyone should have the Companion Bible among their collection.

Well, not sure if you're aware of this, maybe so, but Bullinger's great insight was differing between the gospel of the kingdom given to the 12 apostles by Jesus and the gospel of grace given to Paul by direct revelation from Jesus after his ascension into heaven. The gospel of the kingdom is the gospel to Israel, the gospel of grace is to the Gentiles, and runs roughly from the second part of acts to Philemon.

@@me73941And that’s precisely the reason why many are confused and have no understanding of the Bible. They mix a dispensation meant for the Jews and the House of Israel with the body of Christ and the church.

Without commenting on Bullinger's theology, the nice thing about The Companion Bible is that _most_ of the "opinion" / interpretation is in the Appendices. The supplementary material within the text is largely outlines, language notes, clarifications, references, etc. That's not to say they're completely non-sectarian, but I'm not an "ultra-dispensationalist" and have used the Companion Bible for years as my only study bible. Unlike study bibles today, which are a) light on actual scholarly notes and b) heavy on sectarian slant.
@mercster

I think that your review of the Bible would have been better served by more focus on the notes/structures in the text, rather than the appendices, but I recognize that this wasn't the focus of your review, which seemed to be physical properties/typographical properties and the content of the appendices that you disagree with.

Very good review. A couple of points to consider: (1) Regarding the "structures", Bullinger felt that they were an evidence of the Divine origin of Scripture, showing a logical layout of God's word. He perhaps overstates the case, but I've found those outlines to be helpful. (2) The main minor criticism I would have of this review is that it omitted the information in the text and appendices that explain Hebrew and Greek synonyms, showing which particular word is translated in the KJV and its origin, kind of a mini lexicon (he also published a separate, complete Greek lexicon). It should also be noted that Bullinger's edition of the KJV includes quotation marks, which can be very helpful. I'm no ultra-dispensationalist, and I'm less of a "regular" dispensationalist that I used to be, but I've found the information in this Bible to be invaluable. I discard the ultra-dispensationalism (and even some "regular" dispensationalism) but still have grown to appreciate Bullinger's scholarship and love for the Word. Thanks, though, for the comprehensive look at this volume.

Kregel Publishing didn't exactly go all out on quality for this publication did they? Back in the day Zondervan was the one printing the Companion Bible. I have one from 1986 and it was done right with decent paper quality and print. Now they print these as cheaply as possible in some slave labor factory in China for pennies on the dollar and then Kregel jacks up the price to 70-80 dollars a piece to charge us poor suckers

The only Greek-English Septuagint that I can think of at the moment is Brenton's Septuagint, published by Hendrickson. The Greek text is largely from Vaticanus. The Greek font is _slanted_ , but I find it readable. The English is archaic (imitates the KJV), but is fairly literal. Brenton's Septuagint is printed in a 7.5 pt font, and line height seems a bit low for that font size. The text (Greek and English) is organized into paragraphs. It comes in a hardback. Unfortunately, it has a glued binding, but it does lie open in Genesis.

Bullinger had some really weird views. I remember his chart of Gospel chronological order listing the healing of Jairus' daughter as two separate events (one being recorded in Matthew, and the other in Mark and Luke), which I find ridiculous because it's too coincidental that a bleeding woman touched his cloak on both occasions. That's not the only event he duplicated either...
@curtthegamer934
@curtthegamer934 4 года назад
I should have brought up the healing of the Gadarene demoniacs instead. That's one of the events he duplicated. That's even more ridiculous than the Jairus' daughter duplication, because a guy possessed by demons happens to come from the caves on both occasions, the demons happen to get cast into pigs on both occasions, and the people of the region just happen to tell Jesus to depart afterwards on both occasions. It's pretty obvious that it is one single event.

The Gospel of the Grace of God and the gospel of God are the same. I’m a mild dispensationalist so I guess I would disagree is some areas

I admit that Bullinger's distinctions confuse me. I suspect he made them at least in part to support the notion that the Church didn't start until after the events of the book of Acts had occurred. I'm not a dispensationalist, but I find some aspects of that perspective attractive. And some of the best expository Bible teachers are dispensationalists (or were dispensationalists when they were alive).

R. Grant Jones yes sir. I mean I’m what they called Mild dispensationalist. My preacher is a great Bible student which in return makes a great teacher. My church started a Bible college because because my preachers son wanted him to pass on all that he knows. He would never call himself a scholar he. He’s in his 70s and is just all real. You’re ever in Jersey stop by. Solid Rock Baptist Church lol. But yea I’m just ranting. Thanks for your videos. Hope you have a great Sunday!!

@@fredeskridge22 - thanks for the invitation, Fred! I've noticed that churches tend to be less welcoming toward older people like myself. I think they're afraid that gray hairs drive the youngsters away!

Bullinger was a real piece of work... Ultradispensationalism takes Christ almost completely out of Christianity.

@@NY2ETN Ultradispensationalists even ignore the gospels (and sometimes half of Paul) because "wrong dispensation". Even normal dispensationalism makes God schizophrenic. A mentally ill God would not be God - therefore dispensationalism is wrong.

Looks pretty shoddy compared to my 1986 printing. Everything now produced is cheap, shoddy, crappy, and low quality. What a world we live in. When I was a kid a Bible had a Lifetime guarantee with it. Now you are lucky if your seconded rate Chinese produced Bible will last a year.

A number of people have made similar comments, but many people like the fact that I speak softly. (I suspect it helps them sleep through these videos!) At any rate, that's about all the voice I have. One of the things that annoys me is radio stations that amplify the audio to the point that they're too loud for me to listen to even on my receiver's lowest setting.
