The Complete History of the Anschluss

In 1938, Austria united with Germany. Apart from this, peoples understanding of events is hazy. Did the Austrian people want it? Were they coerced into it? Were they invaded? Why did Germany do it? Most believe it was part of Hitler's larger Lebensraum strategy. But this isn't the case at all. In fact, the Anschluss goes back all the way to 1918, if not before, and it was only a few men who ever stood in the way of such a union.
The facts are that Kurt Schuschnigg, not Adolf Hitler, precipitated the crisis. Before this, there was a long standing 'evolutionary process' towards the two nations working closer together. So, in order to stop this process, Schuschnigg made a daring gamble, and that gamble failed. Let's find out what happened.

@@ZoomerHistorian I wholeheartedly agree. I have been making a solid effort to help spread awareness of your channel, most often among friends and among fellow history "nerds" online. I do my best to express genuine interest, in the hopes of not looking like a pure tactless shill, but I don't deny being a "shill" of sorts. So be it. 😊My true intentions are simply to draw quality attention from open-minded and genuinely interested folks. I'm sure that you fully understand, but I have a great respect and appreciation for anyone who can thoughtfully and objectively consider the very well researched info from the source materials you often utilize. Many of your frequent sources are criminally underexposed, for clear political reasons(as you undoubtedly know), but the enormous effort and superior scholarship that went into compiling them is light years beyond most anything presented by their most vicious and dishonest critics.

I have to say, after watching most of your videos now. You are doing great job in keeping these strictly as works of history and not adding anything political in them. It is of course the only way to keep these on youtube, as they would surely love to ban you on the first note when you tell your own opinion on anything even on the positive stuff that even today's historians admit. I could not have made this long of a video and keep it non-political, so for that I salute you! But a great video as always! @@ZoomerHistorian I do not think you have, as you see it through a definitely right wing lense. There was no majority for the Germans - nothwithstanding the reception -a 3rd were definitely pro Nazi. Also that Hitler needed to get his hands on the gold and curreny reserves of the National Bank is not mentionend. - there were no preparations,because Schschnigg forced his hand - and that you claim the 99% is something close to a reality is a joke. Even Görings brother complained about the blatant irregularities during that plepiscit.

I like that he never even mentioned the SPÖ, not even when he talked about the Civil War of February 1934. They rewrote their party history so much, that they practically think it was all about them, neglecting totally the geopolitical surroundings. Fact is, that the allies never did anything to defend Austrian independence, not France, not Britain, not the USA. And without help, it was doomed. Austrian politicians are to be blamed, that they didn't forge any relyable alliance with our neighbours, that could help us against the German threat. They were unable to overcome the bad blood with Czechoslovakia and Hungary and didn't even reach out towards Poland. In 1938 the German Wehrmacht was still a minor army and even a small coalition could have stopped them.

The personal pronoun "I" is always capitalized in English, pero no en español (yo) a menos que sea la primera palabra de la oración. The citizenships in English are written with upper case too. 1:02:43 This photo made me a bit teary. “When your mother has grown older, When her dear, faithful eyes no longer see life as they once did, When her feet, grown tired, No longer want to carry her as she walks Then lend her your arm in support, Escort her with happy pleasure. The hour will come when, weeping, you Must accompany her on her final walk. And if she asks you something, Then give her an answer. And if she asks again, then speak! And if she asks yet again, respond to her, Not impatiently, but with gentle calm. And if she cannot understand you properly Explain all to her happily. The hour will come, the bitter hour, When her mouth asks for nothing more.”

Cool poem, and a fitting moment. I recently learned that it was actually written by someone named Georg Runsky, though it is often falsely attributed to old Uncle A. I always thought he authored it too. Apparently, in the happier days of the Reich(pre-war), this poem was featured in one of the papers and Uncle A was credited as the author. It is said that this was what started the false info about who wrote it. I've seen some others claim that it was a deliberate propaganda move by Goebbels, to foster the high respect for motherhood that became a pillar of the party's platform. You know how these things go though. Did Goebbels start the rumor? I don't know. Maybe. Ultimately, it's a nice respectful sentiment. Whatever. 🙂.\o

The American government has a bowling average of 300 when it comes to lying thru their teeth.... If America states a "fact".... look 180° the other direction.... the "Truth" will be totally in the opposite direction. Although I disagree with the angry austrian's policies, I think reuniting Austria with Germany was overall a good thing, 1) because both Austrians and Germans supported it so it was not an annexation it was more like a family reunion and 2) because Austria was better off being part of Germany. An annexation is only when the defending country and its people don't support being annexed into the "invading country". The fact that over 90% of both Germans and Austrians supported the unification of Austria into Germany proves it literally wasn't an annexation.

I lived in Austria and most modern Austrians would never tolerate a modern union. They are proud if their nation and what it has become since 1955. Other than a few resources mentioned, what are you primary sources to use the litany of quotes? Also, the use of modern English slang and applied to quotes from another language from another era you are using, honestly is a distraction from your informative video.

Reunification always included Austria. 1848 Greater German vs Lessor German solution with the latter succeeded with Prussia alone as one of the great German powers unifying with smaller German states

in 1848 Austrian regions sent delegates to the provisionary parliament in Frankfurt and the parliament even tried to calm differences by electing Erzherzog Johann as German president. But when it became clear, that Northern German protestants would dominate such a new state, both the delegates and the Erzherzog left Frankfurt and never came back.

I find it strange that Germany and Austria cannot unite, but they can both be under the EU, which is becoming more and more in the direction of a political union itself. I wish more countries in Europe would unite if they can find common ground on culture and history--Moldova and Romania, for instance, or northern part of Belgium and Netherlands. At the same time, bigger often does not mean well run, in terms of national governments.
@SwampOnaMountain
@SwampOnaMountain 8 месяцев назад
those are not comparable. the eu was always a political entity but a unitary state is a different matter all together as each country has different foreign policy. in many ways you can also see the eu countries shifting apart and decentrilizing dueto infighting whch isnt the case for either states.
@SwampOnaMountain
@SwampOnaMountain 8 месяцев назад
the eu is a single market with some political endgoals for sure but a unitary state is a thing that most people and governments dont work towards and some joined openly stating they'll never join such state no matter what.

Is it possible that some of this isn't true? I only remember a reference on history channel many years ago that some Austrians cheered the Nazi invaders but I have never heard any of the story or details from this video. How could they omit such relevant context that nearly ALL Austrians and Germans wanted to unify their two countries, save for a few high ranking politicians who tried to obstruct? It seems more like a very large family reuniting than it does the start of a world war. Thank you for making these videos Zoomer.

Something that you may have ignored is the appeal of going from being an integral part of Nazi aggression to being the first state victim of it. From all that has been recorded, the notion that Austria, its institutions and its population are somehow innocent of German war crimes is beyond absurd, however, this narrative became convenient in the context of the cold war in the 1950s. You see, Austria as Germany was divided into four sectors, just like Vienna, the difference is that due to its small size, the Soviet sector was obviously unviable in every way, just as the occupation of Vienna was less rigid than that of Berlin, it was no less predatory. There was a huge incentive for the Austrians to accept any agreement to end this nightmare, and as the Soviets were not willing to cede anything to the West. Then compromise to accept a "neutral" Austria was born. The reason all this hypocrisy and blatant false narrative of Austria's victim status passed scrutiny was because those who would theoretically be most affected were under Soviet rule, so there would be no problems there, the rest in the west were too busy and weakened to take capital offense in this issue and the Germans are obviously on the "wrong side of history".

Austria didn’t became Germany in 1848 because she had an empire far larger outside of the German confederation which was not German. When Austria lost that empire in 1918, it was only natural for the Austrians to be united with the rest of the German state as it was always intended to happen. But French didn’t like the idea of an even stronger and bigger Germany so they used dirty tricks against the motion but failed because Hitler was no joke. After ww2, French did the same trick and separated Austria from the rest of the German states one r again, this time, looks the hope has truly been lost.

I have to commend you for the detailed depiction of the events. Some criticism: What you completely ignored is the 10% of the population that were excluded from the plebiscite in the first place (Jews, political opponents etc.) and the fact that the elections were not private, meaning one was peer-pressured into voting Yes, for fear of later reprisals from the regime. So this was not a free election at all. Also just a small nitpick about the start of the video. The majority of people in the old empire did NOT want independence. This has been debunked so many times by historians now, its annoying that the allied propaganda from over 100 years ago still sticks. The nationalist movements in the empire were about greater REPRESENTATION, not INDEPENDENCE. The idea of independence did not gain a majority appeal up until the very end WW1.
