-------*PADDLE DETAILS*
Despite the failures of this paddle, looking at it from a competitive lens, it’s hard to find fault as long as USAP allows its use in tournament play. It is a fast paddle with lots of new features that help stabilize your shots and give solid feedback to the person wielding it. The handle feels small and fragile, but thanks to the unibody construction, paddles separating at the handle should be a thing of the past. The edge foam injection is a good choice to help strengthen those off-centered hits. However, some lead tape could have had similar effect. Even with the foam, it was one of the louder paddles I’ve tested on the decibel meter. It also didn’t meet dimension specs, with me even clamping pressure with my caliper.
My biggest complaint is that I have yet to test a CRBN paddle that has passed a Starrett test, and this one is no different.
And so with that said, I’m out!

TESTING EXPLANATIONS:
DIMENSIONS TEST:
The total measurement of the paddle cannot be more than 24” in total. To measure, you take the furthest-most point on the top to the bottom of the handle to get the [L]ength and then the side is the furthest points on the paddle face from left to right to gather the [W]idth.
Formula:
L” + W” ≤ 24”
SOUND TEST:
The sound test is self-created and not a requirement of the USAP. However due to various committees pushing for ordinances over sound complaints, Sun City Grand has put together their own study and determined “zones” for which certain paddles could be played or banned from use. Taking the loudest and well-known and acceptable paddle on their list of “Green Zone” paddles, the Onix Z5, I began my tests. At a 5ft drop, my specimen paddle showed a rating of 97.3dB at approximately 2” away from the paddle using a Franklin X40 ball. With 97.3dB as a baseline, a passing grade is anything less, which should give it a “Green Zone” passing grade. Do your part to reduce noise complaints in the community. Addressing it early on will ensure our sport thrives for years to come.

pball.grandpick...
STARRETT TEST:
As a reminder, the legal limits of roughness on a paddle are 30.00 or less Rz and 40.00 or less Rt. Using a Starrett SR160 in accordance to the USAP guidelines of taking (6) readings on the surface of the paddle. Upon speaking with many in the industry, it was noted that they use a center placement of the Starrett device. Measurements taken at the following angles: 0°, 45°, 90°, 180°, 225° & 270°. I have coined this as the “Compass Method” and has since advised against it, in favor of my own “Clock Method”, which visually looks like a measurement taken from the 12 o’clock to 5 o’clock, aka 0°, 30°, 60°, 90°, 120° & 150° respectively. The reason for this is that the compass method is prone to duplicate measurements when taking readings from opposite angles (I.e. 0° & 180° are the same plane). Whereas the “Clock Method,” no angles are duplicated; each plane is unique.
DISCLAIMER
I am just a guy on the internet who loves Pickleball and wants the best for it. My results are just that… mine. I am not an ambassador or in any way affiliated with any paddle manufacturer or USA Pickleball. Take it with a grain of salt. I try my best to be as accurate and as transparent as I can.
Love you all and I appreciate your support!

Have you calibrated your ruler to a NIST-certified standards? Have you calibrated your sound meter to NIST-certified standard? Have you calibrated your Starret to a NIST-certified standard? The US National Bureau of Standards makes available standards and ISO-certified methods for calibration. The Starret in particular should be certified regularly. The paddle dimensions (24.027") was only 0.027" or 0.11% too large. Have you calibration tested that your ruler even accurate to 0.11%? Come on, lets see some real engineering and statistics here.

Measurement using caliper that had been calibrated to a certified calibration block should be the very minimum..... I think I need to get a paddle that is an extra 0.027" because it will greatly improve my game. I am also wondering how much temperature and humidity impact the physical dimensions.

Would have been more informative if you posted the grit results from the other paddles to compare to the CRBN results. Seems like a hit piece against CRBN. I have played with the Selkirk power air as a comparison and of the CRBN2 13mm and 16mm. The Selkirk power air felt like it had a lot more grit on the face of the paddle than CRBN.

You can go through all my videos and see the results of each paddle, I’m not hiding anything. The only reason I haven’t made an overall list is because you’re dealing with two values, not one. I suppose I could average the two values to come up with a trivial ranking order. Thanks for the suggestion!

These new paddles by CRBN have already been approved by the only entity that matters or they wouldn’t have put them on the market. I’m glad they are allowing a little more performance from these paddles considering the ever higher prices.

@@pbjpickleballlol I was thinking the exact same thing…sounds like the exact argument CRBN would have made last year when they got caught…frankly the penalty clearly isn’t high enough for companies who violate these regulations. Not only should the governing bodies be testing prior to each match but there needs to be a way to enforce this at all sanctioned amateur tournaments as well.

If you can get your hands on a Legacy Pro I'd be very interested to see the test results on that paddle. Actually it'd be very interesting to see test results w/that, the Vatic Pro V7 and to a lesser extent the Six Zero (lesser only because they don't have an elongated paddle) cause they all are raw carbon w/fused edges and foam injection.

The Six Zero Black Diamonds are very close to the standard elongated dimensions. They are 16.3 x 7.5-7.7 inches (tapered toward tip). The tapering may result in more speed because of moving the sweet spot closer to the tip.

I don’t understand how/why they can’t even get it in spec according to size. It’s not just crbn that doesn’t do this, as your channel points out very well. It seems very easy to at least make paddles that are the correct size and within legal limits. Do USAPA rules even matter at this point? I think they either need to get rid of the old rules, start cracking down on these illegal paddles, or adapt the rules to the new paddle technologies. However, we can’t continue to just let blatantly ilegal paddles be bought, sold, and encouraged in competitive or even recreational play. It’s shady, unclear, and gives unfair advantages to only those who are “in the know”.

This is why I started the channel. To document and share the results I was seeing.
@patrickaugie9442

As in any manufacturing process there is variability (AKA tolerance). It would seem more reasonable to utilize a test based upon a sample size and not just one. With manufacturing tolerance it would be very easy for one to pass then the next fail. Ideally the manufacture should run a process capability study to confirm they can hold required tolerances then produce certification for each production run, based upon an established sample size, showing data that the paddles meet the required specs. All the documentation should be submitted to the Pickleball governing board

@@godgunsandgoldens Yes, but that was also the case with the original CRBN 1. It was tested and approved by USAP in 2021. In 2022 USAP retested it during a tournament, found that multiple paddles failed, and then removed ALL the CRBN paddles from the USAP approved list. In other words, if USAP decides to retest these paddles a year from now and the batch they tested fails, even the paddles on the market now and in people's hands would be removed from the USAP approved list.
