Hello everyone, and welcome back to Scary Interesting. In this video, we’re going to go over three more cases of people who completely vanished in a short period of time, and despite almost immediate and extensive searches, not a single trace of them has been found. I just watched a video of a man jumping on the roof of a car to save himself from what he thought was a vicious dog and leaving his young child on the ground with the dog. Luckily the dog was not vicious and didn't attack the kid, but he was willing to watch his own child be torn apart to save himself. Yet there are people who will put themselves at risk to save strangers.

The first case: She was struggling to keep up, was older and a heavy smoker. She overexerted herself to tease her friends. My first suspicion was she had a health emergency, became disoriented and went off the trail. She could have easily have ended up in a river.

That's a good theory. I was thinking maybe she ran off to hide to continue teasing the friends, then got lost like the lady that went off trail to relieve herself.

That’s what I was thinking too. She could’ve easily fallen or injured herself while off the path. Especially if she got lost.

That's my best guess as well. I also wouldn't be surprised if an animal like a bear got to her when she was incapacitated or already deceased. That seems like the most likely reason no one would find a body. Same with the guy in the second story.

I was thinking that if she'd sped up beyond her normal walking speed, once she started going downhill it would also be easy to trip. I very much doubt foul play and I think an accident is quite a bit more likely than deciding to disappear in that way.

Every time I watch a video on ppl disappearing I think of my aunt Nikki who went missing when I was around ten years old in the late nineties. Just gone without a trace. We hired PI's and everything but still not a word or trace. I hope these ppl and my aunt get found eventually~ living or otherwise. It's nice to have some kind of closure. Not knowing hurts the most.

I’m sorry that happened to your family. I don’t need to imagine as I lost my Dad to suicide when I was 13..I personally would have wanted him to simply disappear versus knowing he preferred death over loving me. Maybe you can feel good about that I’m hoping. 🌟

I hope your aunt is found one day. There is a gentlemen that went missing in our hometown before I was even born, his mom still puts signs up to this day. Like on billboards and everything. In Richmond Indiana. My grandpa believes he was killed and fed to hogs by a group of miscreants in that town. But idk. Probably never will.

My mum’s cousin went missing in the nineties: just left and never came back. He had a really rough childhood but was close to other family members - including my mum and his sister, who has spent loads of money on PIs. He made a phonecall to his mum about 20 years ago saying that she’d be so ashamed of how he was living his life and how she wouldn’t hear from him again. Nobody knows whether that meant he was planning on ending his life after that or he was just severing ties completely. When she died last year we kind of expected something from him but didn’t hear anything… Who knows what’s become of him. I hope everyone who leaves of their own accord manages to find some kind of happiness eventually.

Whenever I watch a show like this, afterwards I walk through my place and narrate the things people might find if I disappeared. "On her desk there was a silver ring with a green stone that no one had ever seen her wear before!" (yeah, because I needed to lose weight first for it to fit again). "Only weeks before her disappearance, she wrote a testament and mailed it to her sister!" (yeah, those things need updating from time to time). "It is unknown why she suddenly moved her bedroom to another room in her apartment" (because my neighbours are very loud).

It's an interesting comment because it shows how relatively innocuous things often get interpreted as mysterious without proper context when someone goes missing. I'm sure if either of us disappeared tomorrow there are a number of mundane things that would seem out of place or eerie to the people trying to figure out what happened and find us.

my dad used to write notes on his cigar packs, since he would never forget those. issue was mom would toss the empty ones in the oven, so my dad started just writing them on the wall of his shop.

Paranoid schizophrenia is a nightmare, my sister has it too, I'm sorry you had to deal with that, it's awful beyond words. My sister stole money and disappeared several times, once she decided to go for a swim in February wearing her winter clothes, if people hadn't spotted her and came to the rescue who knows if her body would have been found, I'm terrified of her disappearing for good.

My mother had it (she has passed). My younger sister has bi polar. Growing up I had to basically raise and care for both of them. It is so tiresome and often can be scary when they go off their meds.

Thelma's friends could have been in on the plans, which is why they had such an "organic story", and why they left her alone and continued on alone to the end of the trail so that she would have had enough time to get away.

It’s extremely unlikely for a group of women to join in a cause like this. Wrong demographic. They didn’t have anything to gain either. Woods are easy places for people to get lost in.

Just a comment on the found finger. The police stated they weren't sure if it was foul play or not. Couldn't a big hint be the way it was severed? Losing your digit in a car door looks vastly different than one that was removed with a sharp blade. Lastly, I understand that they would have to consider the victim doing it herself with her large history of mental illness. But I would believe you could make an educated guess if it was an accident or done maliciously. Love all the stories that give me my Sunday "chill".

I agree, a trained professional should be able to examine & see the way the digit was removed. To get the best findings It would depend on if soft tissue was remaining to get the clearest understanding. Bone can only explain so much. Especially if it was removed from a certain spot of the digit? You'd think they would rule it as foul play regardless because it's so unusual that someone would just lose a digit in the first place..?

@@benmcreynolds8581 First, you've got to take into consideration the condition of the body part. Somethings things just aren't in good enough shape to get any detailed information off them. I had some teaching cases when I was in grad school where we knew the cause and manner of death, but the skeleton showed absolutely no evidence of what had happened. When it comes to soft tissue damage, b/c fingers are so small, there isn't a lot of area to examine to for pathology. My guess is that it showed some kind of crush injury rather than sharp or penetrating trauma, but without seeing the reports. . . I imagine that law enforcement was more focused on identifying who the finger came from rather than how it got to where it was and why. There are honestly just too many unknowns to give much of an educated opinion on the situation. This is one where I'd definitely like to know more.

@@aluvrianne totally agree. I would just think that at some point, someone would go back to look at that case because it's the only case in this video at least that showed signs of foul play. Even if I'm wrong, it seemed like there was enough signs to at least look into further than "treating it only as a missing persons case of someone who had mental health issues" just cause she struggled with certain things doesn't mean that someone couldn't have hurt her.. but like you said there is just a lot of variables & info that we just don't know & maybe they do. Still feels like they never looked into it besides declaring her a missing persons

On the first story, kinda sounds like she was trying to lag behind to fall outta sight. Then when she realized her friends weren't gonna let her lag that far behind, she had to change plans after her friends called her out. So she might have gone ahead far enough to get out of view, duck off the side of the trail, maybe behind trees or bushes, or over a hillside. Then when the friends passed by, she circled back to the start of the trail where a possible friend was waiting. He wouldn't have needed to have a specific time to be there, just sometime after the women had started their walk, and Thelma would show up as soon as she could ditch the others

Yeah, I think from the circumstances described there's a realistic possibility she disappeared voluntarily. She knew that trail very well so it would have been easy for her to slip out of sight and hide.

@iheardyoulikeme I wondered that, too. But it could be that they focused, at at first, on the trail from where she was last seen towards the campground (as if she kept walking) rather than talking to people on the path/trail BEHIND towards the trailhead. Just a thought

If you take medication to manage a psychiatric condition like I do, please please don’t just stop taking it. If you don’t want to take it anymore, it’s safer to taper off slowly. Also, there are many medications these days; as irritating as the process of trying new meds can be, it’s far better than just not getting it treated, especially for something as serious as bipolar disorder. The result of such a yo-yoing cycle is that it erodes your baseline functioning over time, I.e. your ‘normal’ becomes less and less so. I’ve seen it.

I’ve seen this happen. People feel better and just stop. A neighbour mentioned the exact same thing yesterday. She wants to stop her meds. We had a fairly ‘robust’ conversation about it. Hopefully she doesn’t.

Re: Thelma - There is a little credence to the affair and disappearing theory. Note that she slowed down initially, possibly to distance herself from her friends -- then sped up excessivly to, again, possibly distance herself from her friends. Something seems suspicious there.

I thought the same thing. Fall back to disappear...and then speed ahead, hide in the woods, and then double back to the trailhead and disappear. Unlikely, but not impossible. Also, the "searchers" might have focused on the path from where she disappeared TO the campground rather than BEHIND from whence she came.

To give an idea about how easy it is to vanish in Alaska, bones were found near Mt. Marathon a few years ago, but they were from a *different* missing person. It's similar to some of the more remote areas of the SW.

I know we are confounded how someone can vanish so quickly and then have the subsequent massive searches turn up nothing. But just given the sheer number of these stories (as this channel does a great job of retelling), it does stand to reason that yes, people can vanish way faster than is comfortable even contemplate. Now I think about this every time I go on a solo hike somewhere...

I backpack and hike in the wilderness all over the country and I tell people all the time that sometimes it's as simple as one missed step and you're dead. Awareness is the number one skill you can have. Not too long ago I was in the wilderness in Wyoming hiking through a thicket of trees trying to find a way through when from out of nowhere a huge branch struck me dead in the face. I feel down and rolled a bit and once I got my bearings I realized I was laying right on the edge of a cliff. If I had fell a few inches more I'd be gone. I've stepped in sinkholes before that would easily swallow a smaller child, never to be seen again. Mother nature is beautiful but unforgiving. Always always be aware of what's around you because it could happen to the best of us.

It’s so ironic that criminals try their hardest to escape and disappear but normal everyday people seem to do it better without trying.(EDIT) Again I’m talking about efficiently disappearing as well. You can’t really compare rounding a corner and never being seen again to a criminal changing their name,appearance, facial features and burning off their fingerprints. So that’s what I mean. While criminals may also get away, it’s just the efficiency that a hiker in a GROUP or surrounded by other people is able to vanish into thin air without doing much. Also criminals can commit a crime and immediately flee and still get caught later on as they usually do.

@@jeremyshackelford8080 well they often go hiking with other people and can round a corner and disappear from that persons view forever. Some criminals even flee as soon as they’ve done the act and still get caught without initially being searched for when they’ve evaded.

@@HIGHER-POWER Seeing that even the criminals that don’t get caught are just that way because of lazy policing, there’s a lot of criminals just still in society. Yet that’s only about 40-50% of cases. This brings down the amount of criminals that were actually able to somehow escape and disappear with no trace, to being lower than those who unwillingly vanished. Even from what I’ve seen, the criminals on occasion, get caught later down the road. These people however never seem to be found again. Not to mention they leave nothing behind not even a scent.

This video should teach us that it’s one thing to attempt challenging trails, etc. if you’re young and healthy, but if you’re disabled or have health issues, you should think twice before engaging in difficult physical challenges.

I found out from researching other sources that it appears she may have made it to the parking lot, where she could have gotten into a vehicle and left the area undetected. That explains a lot.

God, people with bipolar disorder stopping taking their meds when they feel better is such a common problem. I made that mistake ONCE and it was horrible, especially since I mostly get depressive episodes. Take your meds, folks! I understand that the side effects might be uncomfortable and you might just really wanna hope that it's over now and you're finally just gonna be ok because you feel better, but stopping is never gonna lead to anything good.

The thing with Thelma is that a gun is always the equalizer. But I suspect her friends knew she wanted to disappear and start over with someone new, so they agreed to help her with a cover story. But who knows. The way it expedited her husband's death is sad.

Quite possible. People do some really crazy things and on purpose, even thinking out their plans that are bizarre to average people. When you get emotions deeply involved, then anything is possible.

the thelma one is easily explained if she wanted to escape, wasnt that organic. Once she found a spot where her friends couldnt see her, she could hop into the woods, and wait for them to pass, go the way back to the trailhead where her bf was waiting in a car.

That Michael had no business being in the race with issues that ruined his vision. Once you get over 50 doing stuff like this is questionable at best. I can see why that guy left his wife when she went off her meds, as someone who is bipolar I wouldn't even want to deal with myself without my meds. Sadly I don't think there is a way to legally force folks to stay on them.

About the meds thing. I think a lot of people with bipolar are in denial and the side effects can be brutal. Numbness and not feeling like yourself when you're used to intense emotions can be really difficult. Not saying the husband should have stayed, but I understand why she wouldn't want to take them.

I recently discovered your channel and have enjoyed listening to your presentations immensely, not only for unfamiliar cases but those I've seen videos on before. If I could make a suggestion to you, it would be to add some kind of audio indication when changing to a new story. Just a small sound or break in the otherwise-looping background music you use would be beneficial to those who are only listening along, to signal that it's a new case unrelated to the previous information.

I think what you said at 11:42 is what happened to Michael. He became lost, went down the wrong side and his body fell into a crack/ravine and that's where his remains are. The Missing Enigma featured stories of 3 missing hikers, one for 50 years. Deaths were accidental. Diane was likely killed and her body disposed of.

I've seen pictures of my grandpa (born in 21) and he had hair till around 30, and then every picture after that he looked like what you'd think a grandpa would look like. Maybe cause life was more stressful/less convenient back then? I dunno.

The search for Michael in Alaska was also covered on the National Geographic show called Alaska State Troopers. They were there filming on the day of the race and reacted quickly when he was reported missing. Idk why you didn’t include this part or any of the footage but just wanted to let you know. Does it really come off in a car door as I have my doubts. When I was a child, my brother shut and latched a door (house) in which I was holding onto the door frame as I was wearing roller skates, standing on stairs. One finger didn't make it out before completely latching. Eventually my nail fell off and grew back but I didn't lose a finger tip, just the nail.

I’m going for ex husband for that one. She didn’t have problems until marriage, 10 years plus of mind-games got her mentally unstable and into the mental health system and forced hospitalisation where it’s very hard to graduate out of that world once you’re in it. She lost her kids and became homeless after he left her whilst mentally unwell - that’s rough. Could be understandable but rough. Once she was ‘mental’ no one was going to believe a word she said. How did she get to the north end of town that night? The presence of that phone call message to her mum with another party in the background. The fact that folded clothes and makeup kit were left in places she frequented suggests stalker level knowledge of her habits and families habits. But also suggests a sadistic exhibitionism - leaving distressing Easter egg like clues, almost mocking the people finding them. I’m going with ex.

4:45 this is such a fascinating case for me too. And the one case you’ve covered that even as you describe her escape scenario, seems the most well explained of all. She was very, very regimented. It’s precisely in her nature to commence a series of perfectly executed maneuvers to disappear under ideal circumstances . In my opinion, this is such a great case to benchmark other cases similar to this and the importance of good investigatory work re: the habits of those who disappear and potential motivations. For me the linchpin in the priest. I’ve tried to discredit them but at the end of the day, they truly had no reason to lie. Doesn’t mean they are being honest, and not very priest is good, but there’s certainly downsides to inventing slanderous information after the fact for such a public figure. Idk man, crazy story. And it’s only the first one of the video! Great work boss

If nobody saw the first lady on the trail, it's questionable that she could even walk 9 miles, and there was not a trail of cigarette butts in her wake, then she probably never walked the trail. People usually don't disappear to start a new life, they disappear to end their own. Foul play is always the least statistically viable conclusion, but it's a favorite of true crime fans anyway. That suicidal and depressed people always show 'signs' is a misunderstanding by people that neither understand clinical depression nor suicide. Anyway, you know what I think happened.

Police had to consider other options like she might have slammed her finger in a car door and accidently hurt herself. Common, if that was the case and nothing malicious was at play, she would have shown up at a hospital. I'm pretty sure no one just leaves their severed finger at the side of the road either if that was to happen.

The first one definitely sounds like a voluntary disappearance to me…(in my zero expertise opinion). I don’t think she had someone waiting around *to pick her up,* I think she had someone leave a vehicle somewhere for her to get to and use. All she needed to do was find an opportunity to get out of her friend’s line of sight and book it to the car “drop off” point. Because it seems like she was originally trying to lag _BEHIND_ her friends for most of the hike and that wasn’t working, due to them constantly turning around to check on her. So she finally decided to try another tactic, by speeding up to get out of sight and playing it off as a “joke”. (Of course, this is assuming the friends didn’t *know* about the “escape” plan and the entire “slow down/speed up” hiking story wasn’t invented to help cover her tracks🤷‍♀️).

Good catch with the lagging and speeding. If I needed to get out of sight and give myself enough time to hoof it before people come looking for me (excusing myself to take a bio break wouldn't work. Ten minutes, and they'd come looking), I'd either disappear from behind or rush ahead and make them think I was just super far ahead, too.

I think its funny how all these people comment that being a smoker automatically makes you out of shape or something, during my 8 years in the Army id say 75% of people who ran a sub 13min 2 mile (needed to score 100/100 points on the run of the APFT) were smokers, most people who do heavy construction or work on fishing boats smoke. Recent studies have shown sitting infront of a screen for 8 hours a day is just as unhealthy as smoking. Just ask a Physical Therapist who most of their customers in the worst shape are, im willing to bet programmer is in the top 3

But those people are in their twenties or thirties. This woman was 58 and probably did not exercise regularly. And smoking will catch up with you eventually. My father began smoking at the age of 12. He was always very active. Grew up on a farm and became a Marine. Came back from the Korean War and took over the family farm. He smoked constantly. He had a cigarette burning in an ash tray in every room of the house when he was inside which was really only after dark.He developed COPD, emphysema and heart disease in his early fifties. For an outdoor active guy it was torture. He became severely depressed and took his life when he was 56. His father who never smoked lived to be 99. Longevity is highly genetic so I have no doubt he would have lived a long life if not for cigarettes. Smoking will catch up with the majority of smokers eventually.

Is it not possible Thelma fell into an underground cave system? There are unmapped caves everywhere and especially in the woods, they can be easily missed or covered up with leaves and twigs. For someone to completely vanish just steps away not making a single sound makes me immediately think, well, what if she fell? Especially if someone falls in such a way that their chest is compressed, they couldn't yell. Just a thought- and makes more sense than bigfoot theories.
