My parents migrated from Mexico to the US. I grew up, went to all the schools and joined the military. My father was born in Tabasco. I have family ties in Mexico. I’m Mexican American or, as sometimes labeled, a Chicano. The foreigners need to respect the culture and the Mexican people. Most do but, you still have those with their noses up in the air.

That is very true. Its all about respect. Great thing is that most of that bad behavior is not tolerated nor cared for here in Mexico so most of those Canadians and Americans with bad attitudes eventually hate it out here and leave. Thanks again for sharing! Viva Mexico!

I think you’re in denial. I’m a Mexican and I live here in Mexico. So you mean to tell me that rents, home prices are higher and out of range for local residents who get paid 2500 pesos a week are happy to not be able to afford things we once could. You’re part of the problem. Influencers who promote how cheap life is and how the dollar goes a long way. So it seems to me that you’re just justifying your videos and theme. You can sell this to the foreigners. But not to your topical Mexican. Ask the people in Polanco and Roma how gentrification works.
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 3 месяца назад
Polanco and Roma were both rich neighborhoods before any Gringos showed up. Just because now those areas are more expensive and even more out of reach than they were before doesn't mean they were afordable before either. Its like people in Beverly Hills complaining that they cant afford to live there anymore because rich foreigners from Saudi Arabia or China are now pricing them out. The problem is more prevalent in a place like Oaxaca. But again who is the one that owns these businesses and raising the prices? It's other Mexicans lets not forget that. I just came from Guadalajara and was in awe as to how much money there was in that city. How rich the typical Mexican was there, and I didnt see any expats nor did I see any Locals complaining about gentrification, in fact I saw the exact opposite. Mexico is a huge country, not everyone makes only 2,500 pesos a week only those working at Oxxo or Mcdonalds.

You didn’t see a problem with gentrification in Chapala of Ajijic? Did you visit there, because when I go there to visit I feel like a foreigner in my own country. Have you been to San Miguel de Allende. Have you asked what the square meter goes for? Go travel to affected states and cities and interview the locals. I been to yucatan. I have family there too. in fact I been to most of Mexico. So like I said look at it from the inside out and not from a distance. Just because you visited doesn’t mean you live it. Btw I live in CDMX. You’re going to tell me about my state?

I don't think that is where the word Gringo came from. Mexicans didn't use the words green or go because most do not speak English. Probably came from Spanish word griego, which means someone speaking language you don't understand.

The numbers just don't add up. There are approximately 4 million Americans currently living abroad. Apparently, about 1.6 million of those live in Mexico. The current population of Mexico is around 130,000,000. So Americans make up roughly one-half of 1 percent of Mexico's population. So, 1 out of every 200 people in Mexico is an American. Do you mean to tell me that if there is 1 American in a community of 200 people he is affecting the price of real estate? I doubt it. I get it, there are hotspots where foreigners and gringos tend to gather, but this just means there are even FEWER Americans in the other communities outside of the hotspots. What exactly are Americans driving up the price of? Craft beer? Small displacement motorcycles? Do the communities not benefit from the consumption-based habits of Americans? Having said that, another great video, Jose.

Gracias Jose. I love your little comments - like “the Yucatan is more like Guatemala than northern Mexico.” Little comments like that help to inform your listeners that Mexico is diverse. I would love to hear a few quick examples as to how it’s more like Guatemala than Northern Mexico though. Is it because of the Mayan culture or something else? Regardless, muchas gracias Jose.
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 3 месяца назад
Awesome! Much Appreciated! Yes the reason I said that was because after living here for so long and visiting other parts of Mexico i can truly see the difference. So for example here in the Yucatan the Food and Mayan Culture are what make it more similar to Guatemala. The reason i know this is because after doing so basic research on Guatemala i realized how similar it was to the Yucatan. Of course the Yucatan Peninsula is still Mexico and Guatemala is its own thing. Both are very different, but food wise and Mayan culture/influence is very similar in both countries. Just an observation I have made. I'm sure there is a lot more to it but thats all i got for now 😅

Some of them never learn English and others of younger generations don’t speak Spanish. When I was about 15 years old and learning Spanish I high school I went a few times to a Spanish speaking church. It was 100% Soanish. Fifty-Five years later when I return to visit it is bilingual and more English than Spanish. I was told that many younger people don’t speak Spanish. My wife is Dominican but although she has not lost her Spanish she prefers to speak English all the time. She never taught Spanish to her children who were all born long before I even met her.

Hi Jose 👋 although you mentioned a lot of great points a huge factor at play during gentrification is pushing the locals out of an area to make way for foreigners. I have friends in CDMX (locals not expats) and they're kind of worried for the housing crisis since there's so many people there and not enough housing
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 3 месяца назад
Mexico city is the Largest city in all of the Americas. Just because a few very expensive neighborhoods are now becoming more expensive that does not mean that the whole city is in danger of a foreigner invasion. There is much more at play here than just a handful of expats moving to already rich neighborhoods. Most locals can not afford CDMX for the same reasons why most people living in NY can not afford to live in NY anymore. Polanco and Roma were both rich neighborhoods before any Gringos showed up. Just because now those areas are more expensive and even more out of reach than they were before doesn't mean they were affordable before either. Mexico is a huge country, not everyone makes only 2,500 pesos a week only those working at Oxxo or Mcdonalds. Again this is a very complicated issue and just like in the USA it is easy to blame everything on foreigners the same thing happens in Mexico. The problem has more to do with other factors no one ever really wants to talk about which is that its other Mexicans causing the gentrification problem not foreigners. Mexican business owners raise prices due to basic economics of supply and demand and greed.

Actually "growth" and "gentrification" are two different things. Growth for the regular working people is awesome and I see AMLO doing that for the People. Gentrification is when a contractor or investor comes in and rebuilds a poor area into high-end housing that the people who formerly lived there can no longer afford. So they lose their homes and bizneses to outsiders who have lots more $$:) This happens all over the US too and it is bad news for working people.
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 3 месяца назад
Gentrification is more than just new housing. Its new and improved infrastructure, new businesses, and so much more. Most people actually welcome the rejuvenation of their aging community, but not everyone does. Because some people just dont want to change and that doesn't always speak to the rest of the local population who does welcome the change, which is usually brought in by a younger crowd.

I actually lived in Mexico, in Puebla for a few months when I was young and "fell in love with the country", that's everything the country has to offer! It has been written that Mexico is a "Romantic Place" and that I have to agree! It is also very magical, being that it's got jungles, pine tree forests, volcanoes, pyramids and peyote(that the Indian's use in their ceremonies!) The food is beyond good and I'd say the tacos and the rest of their cuisine is much more healthy than our "fast foods are"? Anywho!! I cannot wait to visit. Although I’m somewhat concerned that locals will be outpriced property wise by the influx of people with more money. Look at Jamaica. Barbados. Bahamas. Some of them countries shops have everything priced in USA dollars. I think there needs to be a balance. In Jamaica there’s very few public beaches left for the locals. Tulum is now getting like that I believe from my research. Just concerns me. Anyway I look forward to shopping in the small local shops and supporting the local economy. Hence why I booked small places to stay owned by Mexicans.
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 3 месяца назад
Yes it is a real concern. With this huge influx of growth there is also tons of greed that is really moving the prices up without them having to be so expensive. It really does need to balance out or this bubble of greed will pop and it wont be that much of a destination anymore as it used to be. Thanks for sharing!

When somebody offers their place for rent and someone agrees to pay the rent, that is a voluntary exchange which is only possible where private property exists. A lot of people want to abolish private property without actually realizing it. In this case is it the gringo or the Mexican who is making the prices higher?
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 3 месяца назад
The person increasing the rent is the one who owns the property which 90% of the time they are Mexican. So it is always funny to hear how "Gringos" are causing a price increase when they are not the ones who are charging for rent 😅

US army veteran, mexican, construction worker for more than 40 years, I guess mexicans are like americans... don't like others to tell them what to do. In US, if you are an educated mexican you are a threat to a work site. Gringos don't like mexicans to tell them what to do. A non-educated gringo will run projects without any knowledge in construction and will blame errors on mexicans. In Mexico, non-working turist projects are blamed on americans. It's just the way it is. I just follow a system. I'm safer and live better in Houston than in Mexico even though I miss Mexico. Safety first. Americans in Mexico should not take these issues as racist just as we mexicans do in US.

If I answered you and it was deleted sometimes it is someone else leaving a comment the Algorithm doesnt like on your comment which then automatically tags it and censors it. Jose, once again, thank you for sharing your content, more and more when I see these videos, it makes me want to move there. I am a single elderly person who is already retired. I am 69 years old this coming June and I need a life change l am just a creature of habit. I have a feeling that is soon as I get my money together I will be there to live. I see that I should be able to do so on a few thousand dollars a month income but I’m not really sure I heard someone saying on another video the other day that now, it’s probably going to cost or I should say your salary expected to have will be about $4500 per month and that exceeds my monthly income in the United States even though I may not qualify to come there because of my income to live. I feel plans to come on a week vacation in May I really hope we can Connect I would be very willing to pay you your fee or showing me around. I feel like I know you I’ve watched so many of your videos I am looking forward to meeting with you when I get there on vacation I will be willing to pay you for your services of showing me around a little bit when I get there take care and see you when I get there, keep on sharing your videos, they make me want to come and find me a nice little inexpensive place to live, and to share my culture with the local and for them to share their custom with me I know plenty of Mexican people in Dallas, Texas, where I reside God bless you and hope to meet with you soon.

My neighbors are excited and positive about organic growth in Mexico. But a lot are not happy with foreigners that are bidding them out of their opportunities to own a home where they've grown up. Housing prices have more than doubled in a year. The other complaint centers around the amount of money the governor spends on activities for foreigners. No local concerts or festivals in the Plaza Grande, only shows of 'traditional music and dance' for the benefit of the tourists.
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 3 месяца назад
The new busses and infrastructure is for the locals not the tourists. There are plenty of local events for the locals. The events you mentioned in the center of town are for tourists because this city rely's heavily on tourism from all over the world and from other parts of Mexico. I think the city of Merida is going through a major change right now and a giant growth spurt which will come with obvious growing pains. There is a lot of domestic and foreign interest in Merida right now and just as much as they are making things better for locals they are also making things better for visitors. Parque la Plancha for example is a major project that was built for the locals with lots of events that are geared towards the locals. I honestly think that this city still has a lot more growing to do and that will come at a cost. In the 6 years I have already been here the changes have been very dramatic and the city is almost unrecognizable in some areas. We will see how this will continue to develop over time. @@JoseArteagaTravels our va y ven service started This past weekend. In my neighborhood it's about 70/30 against because of fare costs and the ridiculous siting of paradas. Another boondoggle from the governor is a common description. It's designed to move people outside of the Periférico is another complaint. La Plancha is nice but how do you get there without multiple bus rides? And where's the parking? I think people would have rather seen all that money going into T1 hospital up the road. Love your videos but I think you're off base on this one. The effects of the sudden influx of money from the north, Colombia, Argentina and chilangolandia isn't a normal economic growth and renewal pattern, and isn't making the lives of Yucatecos better. And I lve had a taste in rock en español since the early '90s (Soda, Charlie Za, Ratones etc) so that kind of cultural fusion is not new and definitely not part of gentrification.

Hola Jose, I have been living in Queretaro for two years and am engaged to a wonderful Mexican woman. In short, I love Mexican people. But I am concerned about the occasional comments about Gringos raising prices etc. and feel that information needs to be made available so both Mexicans and Gringos can live in harmony, peace and mutual respect. First, 33 percent of folks in the U.S. are hispanic while less than 1% of folks in Mexico are gringos. So it we want to discuss cultural invasions I think it is fair to say that Mexico influences the US much more than vice versa. Second, Gringos are sometimes accused of raising prices in Mexico. Well, prices have gone up everywhere, especially in the last two years and especially in the U.S. That is the way it works everywhere in the world, always has and always will. Most important and probably unknown to 90% of Mexicans and Gringos, last year almost 60 billion dollars were sent by Mexicans in the US to their families and friends in Mexico. This money was earned by legal and illegal mexicans working in the U.S. and makes this inflow of cash to Mexico its second largest source of income second only to automotive exports! It is close to 4.5% of the entire Mexican GDP! On the other hand, even though Mexico is the largest trading partner of the U.S., virtually no money comes from Mexico as remittances (i.e. money sent from an individual person to family or friends) to the U.S. Of course, the remittances coming to Mexico were paid to Mexican workers in the U.S. who arguably took jobs that gringos might have received. You know what, I am okay with that. I am glad that the US can help others in this manner (78% of remittances to ALL the world come from the U.S., Saudi Arabia is second) and that the US economy can benefit from our Mexican neighbors. But I would like Mexicans to become aware of this and then maybe those few who have problems with Gringos might change their minds. Each country and each person has something to offer each other and make our lives richer and better. If Gringos and Mexicans argue and fight, we all lose. The truth is that what is good for one country is often good for the other. We need each other. Now we just need to figure out the real reason the exchange rate for US dollars/pesos is so low today. I think it is the billionaires in both countries are playing the markets but that is a whole different discussion. However, since so many dollars are sent to Mexicans from the states the exchange rate is hurting all of us. By the way, the Mexican people have so much to be proud of. The art here is wonderful and the people are so nice. Mexico is a wonderful country!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. The reality is that most Mexicans love Americans and other foreigners. There will always be people out there who just dont like outsiders, just like anywhere else in the world. Even now with a few more bad apples aka Americans coming out here and acting all entitled most Mexicans just make fun of them and push them out while still loving all the other Gringos who actually love and respect Mexico and Mexican culture. As you know most Mexicans are very tolerant and if they feel offended they will not hold back. I think there is more propaganda out there on this subject than truth and as Mexico gets stronger and has a stronger currency the relationship will only get better as now people who move to Mexico will actually be doing so because they love Mexico and not just to save a few bucks. Thanks again for sharing with us and Viva Mexico!

Great presentation only remind people that Mexicans are of Indigenous heritage and not latin people. Latins are Spanish, Portuguese, Italians, French and Romanians. Many Cubans are of Spanish decent like the ones in Miami 8th street section. The problem has never been Mexico it has been the colonial attitude of those from the states. They bring this attitude in Asia and in other countries in Central and south America. Those who don"t act like that, have no problems because Mexicans and their native cousins the Maya people, are humble and friendly as those in Asian countries. This video would be very helpful to teach in US schools. Again great presentation. Also send a video to the con man Trump and his maga gang for an education.

Were the recordings made in times of C? Looks a bit like in the Rolling Stones video 'Living in a Ghost Town'. Okay, irony off. I am aware that, apart from Sweden, Mexico was the only country of the almost 200 on the planet that consistently refused to join in the global C-craze. And hats off for that! Mexico has thus become the torchbearer of freedom, while in Sweden the light of common sense is apparently also in the process of being extinguished. There is no other explanation for this previously neutral country suddenly joining NATO. It is also the country with the most electronic surveillance and will soon be abolishing cash. But why are the streets so deserted? You could say they are devoid of living creatures. You don't even see street dogs anymore. Or is it siesta time? But then there should at least be a few people in bars and cafés, as we know it from southern Europe. Or was this part of the Arte de Vivir not imported during Spanish colonization? Or is the whole thing filmed with American eyes, according to the old law of nature "What we know, we love"? Clean suburbs without loitering street dogs or even loitering people, where people only wave to each other in rolling tin cans on wheels or meet at arranged barbecues, are the epitome of American security, closely followed by well-stocked shopping malls, aren't they? Okay, irony off again. It's just a question from a northern European who once got to know the USA in its better days, but never Mexico. Otherwise, it might be nice to get some pictures of more lively parts of the city or country, in case other viewers feel the same way. In any case, I've heard a lot about lively markets and densely packed city centers in Mexico. Just as a suggestion. In any case, I would be interested.

This was recorded a few months ago. The reason you might not see so many people on the streets during this video was because it was shot around mid day on a Tuesday when most people are at school or working therefore not out and about. Plus in Merida Yucatan temperatures can reach over 100 degrees and not everyone likes to go for long walks on days like this but instead prefer to remain indoors with Air Conditioning. You can watch some of my other videos where you can see much more people walking around. Again it depends on the day, time of day, neighborhood and various other factors. For example in El Centro it is jam packed full of people no mater the weather, or day of the week.... except Sundays 😅

I'm glad to hear that not all Mexicans feel that way. I know they sqeaky wheels are usually the ones heard the most. I recently looked for a map of the Americas that was from a MX geography book to see what was different and it was interesting the title of the map was "America" and it has North , South and Central regions but the entirety was called America. I found this interesting and understood the argument a little bit better. The term America like many other words has more than one meaning. It can mean the continent in geographic terms but in cultural terms it can mean a person from the USA. I always tell people it's important to understand we didn't name ourselves Americans. That name was bestowed upon us by the British and other nations way back in colonial times.There is this idea that we are arrogant because we call ourselves Americans but that's silly because we are just responding to the name the world has called us since colonial days. People are now choosing to be offended by something that predates my 13th great grandparents. Great content as always...

It's nice that you give comprehensive information, but I gotta say you're a bit misinformed about some things. Gentrification *is* a problem in several parts. Regardless of who's more to blame, Mexicans or migrants, the big problem is foreigners that chose 'bubbles' (more and more common as time goes by) of mostly foreign residents (so they don't have to assimilate much). I see in the comments that you say Polanco's always been unaffordable, but Polanco is not Mexico City's bubble but the Roma-Condesa neighborhoods (and other adjacent ones that keep growing. Those neighborhoods used to be affordable for medium-class locals, but not anymore. Those residents were forced to move to the outskirts where they can afford what they could pay in the past years. On the other hand, you have a pretty condescending view of why our differetiation of americano/estadounidense, which, in reality, has to do with people from the USA appropriating the identity of the whole continent (America), and just taking it for themselves. You guys seem convinced that the USA *is* America and that the countries of the rest of the continent are other smaller, fragmented pieces ("Americas"). Of course you are welcome here, as long as you stop treating Mexico (or other American countries) like your backyard.

I agree we are all Americans living on the American Continent. Also you make some great points. Yes there are a few areas of Mexico that have been taken over by expats living in their bubbles. But that by no means is the the whole country. It is still a tiny amount compared to the same problem in the USA or other countries. One thing I have been realizing lately is that Mexico is used to be being a country that no one has wanted to live in for many decades and now that it is a very popular destination for immigrants from all over the world, most of the Mexican population is not used to dealing with so many people wanting to move and live in Mexico. In fact I have heard a few Mexicans say that they wish the rest of the world would go back to thinking that Mexico is a dangerous non-desirable place to be. But as the rest of the world falls into shambles, Mexico will be an even more popular destination for years to come. I agree with you and others on the fact that any immigrant moving to Mexico should assimilate into the culture and not try to impose their own ways on Mexico. Thanks again for sharing.

I don't think you're telling the truth! I've lived here in Oaxaca four five years with a Mexican woman... We see Facebook posts all the time here that says different! They block the main entrance to the city in protests because of gentrification!
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 3 месяца назад
You say you have lived there and have seen Facebook posts.... How much of this have you actually experienced or seen with your own eyes? Also EVERY part of Mexico is different and Yes you are right there is a major problem with growth in Oaxaca and other places in Mexico. But if you just do a little digging you can see for yourself who is actually causing the raise in pricing, it is other Mexicans who own those businesses. In fact they talk about that uncomfortable truth all the time. People want to point the finger and blame tourists or foreigners and refuse to acknowledge who is actually behind the gentrification. It is mainly Greed brought on by other Mexicans and the collateral damage that is caused is to other Mexicans who are displaced and eventually when things get too expensive those tourists and foreingers moving there will just find another place to go. But when that happens it will be too late and the damage is already done. You can even see what is happening in Puerto Escondido and see that the people flocking to the beach are 90% Mexicans and they are not consuming or helping the economy and they are just going and littering and causing a mess that the Locals then have to clean up. Again this is a complicated issue and just blaming Gringos or Foreigners is not the solution and not what the actual cause of the problem is.

That is not true at all. just because a few bad apples are coming out to Mexico and acting entitled does not mean that Every American is doing that. And most Mexicans know fully well that it is just a few bad apples. Sure more bad apples are showing up and acting a fool, but with that said the Mexicans are quickly pushing them out. In fact most Mexicans are emphasizing that Gringos/Americans are Welcome in Mexico as long as they respect the country and the culture, otherwise they will not be tolerated.

Gringos will never have any effect on the culture of Mexico. they are a very small % vs the Mexican population. Latin Americans pouring over the border into the US on the other hand are having a massive effect on US culture, economy and rule of law.

That is not true at all. USA and Mexico are neighbors and have been swapping and sharing cultures for hundreds of years. You should come visit Mexico sometime so you can see exactly how much of an impact Culture form the USA has had on Mexico and vice versa.

@@JoseArteagaTravelsJose he’s talking about the scale and effect. The cry babies online screeching about gringos in Mexico are complaining about less than a million gringos in their country. The us has 50 million Mexicans and their descendants. It’s pure hypocrisy.

@@JoseArteagaTravels I've lived in Mexico for the last 3 years in dozens of locations, thanks. as AMLO said recently in his 60 Minutes interview... Mexico has a strong culture rooted in religion and family - 2 things that the US has mostly lost in the last 50-60 years. I think you are unaware of the political and social reality of the US now. it is overrun with Marxist ideology and woke politics and is on the verge of collapse. crime is rampant and random. police have been prevented from doing their jobs. District Attorneys are more interested in letting criminals off rather than charging them with crimes. Mexico doesnt have that. they still adhere to traditional values of right and wrong. culture is about more than tacos and beer. it is about how a society is organized and the values it is run by. Mexican culture, family and religion are still strong despite expats being in the country. the US is corrupt and overrun by 10 million undocumented immigrants in the last 3 years alone. there is literally no comparison between the strength and health of the 2 nations cultures. that is the reason why smart people come to Mexico and Latin America... strong traditional culture and higher levels of personal freedom here.

Stopped counting the “you know” after one minute. Apart from that: interesting topic but nothing new, not happening only in Mexico. Seems that you just want RU-vid money by click baiting the mexit en vogue wave, specially in the US.

Gentrification seems OVERALL GOOD. In the USA, a poor neighborhood becoming GENTRIFIED can raise property taxes to an unaffordable level for a stationary homeowner. But they can sell their property for much more... So they do win in the end. I wouldn't complain about any neighborhood being GENTRIFIED

@JoseArteagaTravels 3 месяца назад
