The thing about practical effects is that it takes way longer for them to get dated. CG can become insanely dated in a few years but the practical effects and puppets in the original star wars still look great.
Right? There's just something so great about seeing a tangible object in a movie; almost as though our brains are able to perceive an object as being real; makes more sense why so many horror films I grew up watching scared me to such a degree
When you actually flip a truck it's not really going to become dated, the original Star Wars looks like toys that are filmed up close. You talk about it like if they nailed realism in CG tomorrow it would somehow look worse in 5 years, like a dented can of soup.
JakeTakesTheCakes If done right, practical effects never look dated cause reality can't look fake. When I first watched Captain America Civil War, I was like damn the effects are oscar worthy. Then I watched in 4k and the CGI looked like it belonged in Toy Story 1 during lots of scenes.
My guess on the raspy voice is that Bruce Wayne is trying to keep his voice anonymous. He's one of the most famous people in the world so it makes sense to try and disguise his voice a little. Or Christian Bale dun goofed
***** True. But I think a voice changer device would be hard to implement into the costume considering it would have to cover his mouth. And completely silence his regular voice. edit: And im not trying to say the voice isn't stupid and ridiculous I'm just trying to figure out why it would be used.
The comics make a better a explanation (and don't say it's dumb cuz it's a comic and not a movie)Bruce fakes his public voice because to him Bruce Wayne is just the mask and Batman is who he is. He uses his more moderate calm but yet intimating voice.
So spot on when talking about TDKR. Everyone loved it when it came out and then the Internet hated it over time. So dumb. All I know is my theater cried when Alfred broke down saying he failed Bruce and gave the movie a standing ovation when it ended. It's not perfect, but it is a fitting conclusion.
The Dark Knight trilogy is a perfect example of what movies can look like when they have actual care put into them. Christopher Nolan directed, wrote, and produced the trilogy. They are his vision, and they are made exactly to his designs. And for all their flaws and problems, they’re easily some of the best superhero movies of all time. The Dark Knight is even my personal favorite superhero movie ever. Why? Because it’s not some studio product made solely to make money. Nolan cared about what he was making, and it shows. The cinematography, the screenplay, the acting (even Bale’s Batman voice has its charm), the set designs, the use of practical effects, the music (though in all fairness, has Hans Zimmer ever let us down?). These movies aren’t products like Suicide Squad and Justice League, and even some Marvel films like Age of Ultron. The Dark Knight trilogy is flawed, but its successes greatly outweigh them. Nolan had a vision, and what emerged from it was what is, in my opinion, not only the best DC movie, but the best superhero movie ever made, as well as one of the best trilogies. Nolan, Bale and Zimmer made something special, and it shines as an example of what the current DCEU can only dream of surpassing.
Fun Fact: in the comics, Bane is actually the first of the Batman villians to figure out that Bruce Wayne is Batman. Bane just connects a few dots and is like "Fuck it, he's Batman."
I like it, but I love it even more in the sequels where there is an added layer of distortion (that even creeps its way into Gordon's dialogue in the vault scene!)
I liked it, but I can also see why people think it sounds stupid, but I think it was a bit more realistic, so he wouldn't have the same voice as one of the most popular persons in Gotham.
Da Pumaface count me in fuck ben affleck at least the voice isnt the worst thing ever Edited: 1/14/20 actually Ben's version was fine but BVS was an utter dower disaster.
Da Pumaface I feel like it has its moments, on the whole I like it, for instance that SWEAR TO ME scene is made by that voice, but like at the end of the Dark Knight when their trying to talk Harvey down he sound a little ridiculously in character, probably should’ve toned it down. It’s kind of all over the place but mostly I like it.
Christopher H Every single film has plot holes. Even Citizen Kane has plot holes. But we overlook those because the movie is great. Thats the whole point.
I have a feeling no one will see this, but I want to point out something that makes the Joker's character even better. Ralph points out when he flips the coin for his life with Harvey Dent and says Joker could've died right here, but if you look closely at the Joker's hand placement on the gun, he has his fingers covering the hammer of the gun. Even if it was decided that the Joker would die, Harvey would not be able to pull the trigger.
honestly that adds a whole other layer for me. It would've been cool if Joker didn't care if he died then and there. But on the other hand, how much of what Joker said to dent was just BS to make him fucking lose it? Afterall the joker's been shown to just straight up lie about his background and intentions when it suits him in this movie. It just goes to show how smart the joker himself is
His fingers weren't on the hammer and he wasn't trying to prevent his death. His entire goal was to bring down Harvey to break the people of Gotham. If he died right there he would've won immediately. Harvey would've killed him and people would've found out and that's what the Joker wanted. So it would've been completely pointless for him to hold the hammer. Also if you look again, from a certain angle it may look like it but he's not holding the hammer I promise you.
I remember going to the theaters to see TDK and the lines were so long and everyone was so pumped. It was like The phantom menace except when people walked out, it wasn't silent like a funeral, everyone loved it! Such an experience.
The reason the action scene at the docks is filmed like that is explained by christopher nolan. he basically said the bad guys don't know what the fuck is going on so he wanted the audience to feel the same way
@Double_Baked That's probably the most believable reason, but even then. Whenever Batman fights the Red Triangle Gang in Returns, that fight seemed pretty convincing to me
I always thought that batman moves like a shadow, like ninjas do And of course you can't do that but at least with those quick cuts it creates a similar effect
@@elmaionesosexo It is. You can't excuse shitty choreography or shitty directing by saying it's intentional. You can still make Batman feel good at fighting without shaking your camera like a spaz and some of the fights in general were terrible. Like fights with Bane, especially the first one, were embarrassing
I actually loved Snyder’s idea of Batman using a voice modulator. I think the point of Bale’s grunting was that someone would probably recognize world famous playboy billionaire Bruce Wayne’s voice, especially in the city he lives in and loves, and it adds to the demonic presence batman is supposed to have. It was a good and interesting character design choice that added to the mythos.
Thank you for not shitting on The Dark Knight Rises. It's so refreshing to not see people nitpicking the 3rd film of the Nolan trilogy. It was a satisfying conclusion to a great series.
Dr Strangelove "I am so much better than you, Batman, intellectually and psychologically, that I will, in my vast arrogance, explain my entire plan to you, along with instructions on how to foil it." -Riddler, all the times
I never put much thought into it before, but the idea that the world's greatest detective has an adversary that happens to be the world's greatest explainer IS a little redundant...
Disagree slightly with the first batman fight; it was intentionally shaky and obstructive so you can't see batman until the dramatic "I'm batman" reveal
Whoah now, buddy, he's just giving a counter-point to yours, no need to get so defensive because of a dissenting opinion. Must be new to the RU-vids, my boy
Lmao idk why, but any reference to the shadow realm will always make me bust out laughing It doesn't even have to be good, "Omg he got punched so hard he got his soul sent to the shadow realm."
My opinion on TDKR is very similar. It's not perfect, but I honestly love the movie. It's a great way to conclude the trilogy. It's sorta like return of the jedi in that sense.
@@thebatddvideogamefan6460 I wouldn't compare spiderman 3 to return of the Jedi, Return of the Jedi is still good even though there are certain scenes that kind of bogged the movie down
Return of the Jedi is still better than TDKR and I don't even like it that much. TDKR is simply PAINFULLY MEDIOCRE. At least Spider-Man 3 is entertaining
The most interesting thing about why the Dark Knight works is it also explains why something like MoS or BvS _doesn't_ work. They tried to adapt darkness and grit to Superman. On the face of it, that doesn't seem like a big deal. What the real problem is with those fucking movies is that all they ever do is mention ideas and concepts, but never reinforce them thematically. For example, In the Dark Knight, Bruce's actions are constantly questioned by Alfred. How is this reinforced thematically? By Bruce having difficulty managing both of his lives, which eventually catches up with him and results in someone's death, or puts him in a really tight spot. Him pulling through is added drama. How about when Joker says civilized people would turn on each other when shit gets bad? How is this reinforced thematically? By having people try to kill that reporter and stop the Joker from blowing up the hospital, and also don't forget the conflict on the boat where everyone almost blows each other up. In BvS, Ma Kent says Superman owes the world nothing. How is this reinforced? It isn't. He tries to save them while also carelessly destroying half the city. Every line of dialogue by Lex Luther has no thematic reinforcement, it's just lines spoken for the sake of sounding cool or interesting (and also to shove Jesus imagery). To MoS' credit, it is more thematically sound than BvS, so I'll leave it alone.
Well M. Night Shamalayn (hope I didn’t butcher his last name) directed Sixth Sense but then directed The Last Airbender. So this isn’t the first time this happened.
*_IMHO_* *Best Live-Action Superhero Movie* The Dark Knight *Best Live-Action Superhero Show* Netflix Daredevil *Best Animated Superhero Movie* The Incredibles *Best Animated Superhero Show* Batman: The Animated Series *Best Anime Superhero Show* One Punch Man
@@freddice8156 Well I would like to watch MHA/Tiger & Bunny for sure but maybe for some other time, I actually do understand why some fans love that series while I am one of those who enjoy OPM.
I was watching Dark Knight and my friend pointed out that in the scene where the Joker gives Harvey Dent a gun the Joker is holding down the hammer so even if Harvey pulled the trigger it wouldn't have fired
4:51. No. I thought "Nolan is filming this scene as though the camera is one of the bad guys. This is what they're seeing. They have no idea what is going on. This is what it's like to be ambushed by Batman after he's spent a couple minutes terrorizing you in the shadows to the point where you're scared shitless".
It's about the only action scene where it makes sense you can't see what's going on. It's interesting as well how there's constantly fast horizontal camera movement to the left, it's not exactly "messy". A lot of other scenes just aren't good though.
I noticed it the first time I saw TDK in theaters, and I can still watch these movies without noticing because they're so engrossing to me. However, I do agree that it is just dumb.
Shooting on film looks better than digital, but to shoot everything in IMAX is so hard. Avengers Infinity War will be the first todo so, and its a 2018 movie. TDKR is 2012. Plus during filming of both TDK and TDKR they broke one IMAX camera when there were only 4 available xD
Another great video Ralph. so happy u called out annoying fanboys who complain if its not true to comics! Like you said before, if the movie's quality who cares what the director varies from in the comics. Thanks for the nod as well in the credits. Can't wait to see part 4 since u covered basically all the movies
Gameocity Channel Batman Begins: 7/10 The Dark Knight: 9/10 The Dark Knight Rises: 3/10 Seriously. The third movie is atrocious as fuck. Terrible in almost every way
You all know that Bale kept the Batman voice the same in all three movies right? For TDK and TDKR his voiced was edited to sound darker in post. Don't blame the actor, blame those responsible for the change in post.
Jared Wignall makes sense because I wasn't bothered by it in Begins. The Dark Knight once I got DVD I watched it with subtitles to get what he was saying
I don't understand why people hate The Dark Knight Rises, yeah it has tons of plot holes and sometimes feels like a rehash of Batman Begins, but I think it did and amazing job presenting the feeling that all hope is lost after Bane takes over, and it made me feel for the characters and hope that Bruce Wayne rises and takes back Gotham, I still like the Dark Knight more and this is my opinion, but I just don't get the hate behind the Dark Knight Rises.
@@al112v4 how is batman begins better, does plot holes really ruin a movie, no. Do u think when jokers plan was convoluted, did that stop it from the praise it got. When Gotham water supply can change to poison, did anyone complain about how convenient and weird that is.....No because they are already enjoying the movie lol. People just don't like rises because it had to follow up the dark knight
@@imperfect_dan7519 for my, im very logical, plot holes DO ruin a movie. like for ralph he said when a movie is boring he gets nitpicky, i do that when plotholes arrise.
On your remark about the Joker doing shit randomly...well, that's the point of him. His entire character revolves around doing random unpredictable things for "teh lolz" if you will, he's all about causing chaos, destruction, anarchy, and mayhem for a few laughs. You see it in the comics, you see it in the Batman TAS cartoon, and you even see it in Jack Nicholson's portrayal of the character in the Michael Keaton Batman movie. It's because of his unpredictable and homicidal nature that makes him one of the most feared, if not, the most feared villain in the DC universe.
Joker literally has a plan in the movie, he admits it at the end: his Ace in the hole to break Gotham is Harvey Dent. He also has a goal in the movie: breaking Gotham and showing how the system and it’s people are rotten, but he’s proven wrong.
I mean literally every performance in superhero film history is overshadowed by Heath Ledger's. Aaron Eckhart's performance is nothing to scoff at, in fact I'd argue it's nothing less than incredible, particularly after becoming a villain. The scenes with him in the hospital are so impactful IMO. It's been a while since I'd last watched The Dark Knight and those scenes are still vividly sticking in my memory.
Ralph, I fucking love you. Your reviews really show that you know A LOT about filmmaking and the passion you have for it (just like I do, cheers!). However, I would love to hear more about the stuff you love about The Dark Knigh for example. I agree with you, it's one of the best movies ever made, and I would love to hear you break down a specific scene (apart from the amazing action scene you described thoroughly). This review is (in my opinion) more about proving the haters wrong than it is about WHY you love it so much. I am more interested in the stuff that makes this movie truly great as opposed to why it isn't bad. I've had discussions (more like conversations) with my friends that lasted hours why a particular scene is so amazing. The editing, music, direction, dialogue and cinematography is so fantastic that I could talk about it for hours (especially the editing, it's so damn good). My main point is: you don't have to explain to people who don't like is why it's not bad. I think I speak for a lot of people that watch your videos we want wo know why you like it so much. Just a thought. Regardless, great stuff man! I'm a huge fan of your videos and I hope you'll be making more in the years to come. Cheers!
That combination of realism and romanticism with dark undertones and large scale archecture is called gothic. As in Gotham. Gothic literature was as a result of the increasing disdain for romantic, fate driven literature during the enlightenment. It was regarded as pop lit because while gothic lit was realistic and often scientifically plausible, it had elements of romantic fantasy that the common man enjoyed reading about. Nolan's Batman trilogy continues this same tradition as a similar reaction to the previous Batman movies which were romantic with little regard for logic and reason. At least one of the writers was an English lit major and knew what they were doing haha.
True. It's fucking hilarious how Ralph is willing to overlook the dozens of plot holes in this trilogy, yet berate Zack Snyder's DC films as if they're the worst thing ever.
9:53 If you think about it, it might make sense to have a costume where your neck doesn't move....that way no one can break your neck. But you'd have to get really good at fighting without being able to turn your head.
Yes, I do agree with you for one thing, Ralph: _TDKR_ wasn't *that* bad. They treat it like it's _Spider-Man_ _3_ all over again. But whatever, the story and characters were engaging enough for me to not give a damn about the inconsistencies and plot-holes.
Batman Begins is my favourite instalment, even if some of the fight scenes were a bit janky. I concur about Rises is not given enough credit and is going to age better than the overrated Wonder Woman (the best out of a bad bunch of DC movies made since then).
Cristopher Nolan is my absolute favourite director. He does his job very well. His films feel like they have heart and soul! The Dark Knight is my favourite movie and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! I watch it at least 5 times a month and it never gets old!!!
the only thing about the dark knight rises i disliked was the way they killed off bane so quickly and like how because of that everything he was trying to do was for nothing. it's such a simple death of being hit by catwoman's bike after this man is apparently fucking super strengthed
Jesse Redfield I can understand adding realistic contexts like Ironman 1 the dealing of weapons under the table and Iron Man 3 the villains we see on news are just a masquerade but these are still just comic book films so they can be realistic, yes you can add realistic contexts but you cant make it real and this is what the dark knight trilogy did
***** bro... I just saw this now but basically Clark kinda just wants to stay on the farm to help his mom , but she tells him no go do something , so he goes to metrapolis then aliens come try to take over earth and that forces him to become superman , a lot like man of steel but I find it better. Its a lot better than how I just halfassly described it
Well at least you enjoy "The Dark Knight Trilogy," but here are my thoughts: Batman Begins: It's an excellent film. Not as amazing what they think (for the Nolan fanboys for themselves), but it was a good reboot since I remember watching after I am done in high school. The characters were good including great performances by Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Tom Wilkinson, Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy and they're all quite memorable. Christian Bale did an excellent job of portraying as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and his style or ego rich billionaire is kind of interesting and his non-superhero style is kind of cool. Well for his voice is too cartoonish for most of. The story is fascinating, and it updated much better because it's more of a real origin story of Batman that we never get to see. It follows genuinely like other Batman comics, and some had many differences like make it real and it has some stylistic moments. The tone is pretty good, and I quite enjoy the mood that keeps it quiet, and it's much different for most 00's moviegoers. One downside is the action is too sloppy, and the editing is weird sometimes, but it started just early so what do you want me to say? Bottom line, an excellent Batman film. The Dark Knight: Perfect Batman film. So perfect movie and it will be remembered like that. The characters are so fantastic including most cast in this film, Christian Bale updated much better (well the voice is still cartoonish), Heath Ledger as Joker is a classic villain and his reputation of being a Joker changed everything in his legacy after his death. The story was fantastic, and I love how they manage this movie into a quick paste of a perfect action sequence because Nolan accepts his new challenge of filmmaking. The emotion is dark, vengeful, sad, exciting, and very fun roller coaster ride. My favorite film of all time and while this may be the classic movie, but it's a superhero masterpiece. The Dark Knight Rises: It's great finale movie and a little as it gets. Christian Bale is in, and I love him in his best appearance in the motorcycle chase scene, and it's great to see him back instead of being a bum man after 8 years in this movie. The characters were so real and great all-star cast like Tom Hardy as a cool Bane villain and Anne Hathaway as black furry femme fatale Catwoman. The emotion scenes were so good, the cinematography is fantastic, the realistic setting is perfect as always like "The Dark Knight" did, and the action scenes were good. The story is pretty good, and some were a bunch of plot points that didn't have much potential that should've been a real climax, but not much as nitpicking and I can enjoy what is trying to tell about the purpose of this movie. Great film.
Loved this video, this trilogy is so unique and a great example of how amazing film can be. I personally love batman begins, I never really noticed the action lacking but looking back now I can notice Nolan stepped it up in the next two films. I’m going to have to rewatch them all now 🙂
The first one seemed more comic-like. He tried a buncha things in it and then refined what worked and scrapped what didn't. Edit to add - the lighting at 14:30 with two-face. So good
@16:30 - To be fair, that's kind of the whole point of the Joker, at least to me. In my interpretation, there is no planning apart from whatever plot he's executing at the moment. He plans battles, not wars. That's the scary thing about the Joker. He has no real direction. He has no real goal. There's not really a way to make solid predictions of his actions, because he doesn't have an endgame. He creates chaos. That's it. That's the scariest kind of villain: the kind you can't reason with. He's the opposite of a James Bond villain. He's not going to tell the hero his master plan before he pulls the trigger because there isn't one. He's not going to bide his time and listen to you beg for mercy because he doesn't care. Lives are expendable. Things that happen happen. Things that will happen, he has no plans to stop. He's an intimidating villain because he's less of a man with something to prove or accomplish, and more a force of nature. When shit goes down, there's no stopping it. You can't beg a tornado to spare your home and family. The Joker is a tornado.
I thought the 3rd was the weakest of them but they are all far superior to the MCU or the current DCCU. I do love the MCU though but the Nolan batman films are fantastic.
Maybe I'm reaching, but I always thought that when it goes from day to night in TDKR, it was a stylistic choice. You know, Batman comes back, Batman is the night, night falls when he returns. Whatever
TRdutch Oh you're talking about the stupid stock market robbery, not the retarded final confrontation where batman charges bane head on in broad daylight like a fucking downsyndrome patient.
Dude what else would he have done to the guy with hundreds of other people in a city with people in it while having a non-negotiable villain at the helms. Also please don't hurt me.
The reason the warehouse scene is so flashy is actually on purpose. They wanted it to be hard to see batman until he pulls dude from the car and reveals himself. If you notice they actually only show the flutter of the cape. Like when you see a real bat fly over you in real life at night. It wasnt shot like that to hide the lack if skill like with movies like "taken" The behind the scenes explains that specific camera angle. And its purely an artistic take to try and make you feel how the villians would. "Where aaaare yooou?!" Get it?
i mean sure but it looks like shit lmao 😅 if that scene only utilized shadow and framing to make it hard to see it would be better, but the shaking and quick cutting is unnecessary and its ugly
