Is THIS the glimmer of hope we've been waiting for in the Ultra Line? The NERF Ultra Five is a 4-shot internal magazine spring blaster (an Ultra Magnus, if you will) that ticks a few new boxes. This is the first kind of Magazine blaster in the line up so far, and it's performance numbers are above that we normally see (on par with the Ultra 4). But there's one key difference here: the darts actually seem to go straight. Most of the time, even! With this, we start to see what Ultra is actually capable of as a product!

My theory about the added Barrel is to so more orange is visible on the muzzle from the side of the blaster.

I don't think the side of the blaster matters as much as people think. From the side it's way easier to go, "Oh, it's a toy." When a blaster is pointed at you, you basically can't see anything but the muzzle; so that's why bright orange barrels are important. That's just my head canon, anyways.

I can't believe one day Walcom vowed to never touch ultra again, let alone lay eyes on it. It didn't take long for it to bring him at least some joy. This gives me joy too not just because ultra is getting better, but it means Hasbro lowered risk of diving into more trouble. It's very reassuring.

In my head canon, R&D initially modelled the Ultra line and made its predictions of greater range and accuracy based on being launched from a springer, and then marketing decided to lead with flywheels

@@WalcomS7 that's really unique that those couple of inches made that much of a difference without ANY type of minor rifling. Pretty cool. And, again, I'm thinking of multiple mods that could keep it around 125fps and still accurate.

I've been thinking that it's a fancier way to distinguish regional things than just a gray trigger, but I could be wrong. Could also have been added to control the harder-hitting darts more, since there's the chance that the other regions' blasters are weaker and thus don't spin as much.

Coming back here because this video persuaded me to order an Ultra Five/Magnus. I now have one, and no regrets whatsoever. It's just a fun blaster with a satisfying pop. Thank you, Walcom!

Accuracy is going to be a harder sell. Right now all I care about is the darts going straight. They're still often spinning out of control, but from this testing I saw them often correct themselves in mid-flight. It isn't so much accuracy as it's just the darts going in a straight line.

So, basically an equivalent to the Rival Kronos. Just one shot less, but still the same price, similar fps, distance, and most likely more accurate with a dart in place of a ball that spins however it wants. I'm already thinking of possible mods myself. In a couple of years from now this could be one of the go to's for modders.

Idk if anyone knows but you can load one from the barrel end and it’ll chamber fine. A good way to keep it too considering you have to prime it to load the normal way.

So it seems to me that the Ultra darts are actually not bad at springer use, but suck in flywheels so far (they seemed _better than normal_ in the ultra four too) Could it be they designed them around this more, somehow, and then a marketing/release decision tanked the reputation by releasing two flywheelers first? Are they somehow actually stabilised by having air kick out behind them (the "fins" might serve a function here where they don't really do anything when flywheel powered)?

After watching engineeringafterhours' ultra dart analysis, I suspected that springers with a little bit of faux barrel would be enough to keep darts mostly stable in the air as long as nothing knocked it out of place. Interesting to see my hypothesis be confirmed

Actually, I found out you don't even need a barrel and it flies super straight. I don't know what the hangup is though.

Judging by the previous Ultra blasters and this new one, I think the flaw with the Ultra line is that the darts don't play well with flywheels. PERIOD. The Ultra Four seemed to perform alright, and the Ultra Five seems to hold up as well. AND WOULDN'T YOU KNOW, THEY'RE BOTH SPRINGERS!

I just took mine apart to see what’s there and... I’m disappointed in the quality of a few spots. The clips that hold the slide onto the shell are very thin and fragile. In fact the shell parts themselves have a fair amount of flex to them when separated. Also the slide has no hard attachments to the body other than those clips. Unlike the Magnus where it connects to the breach, this just has a gear system that pulls the breach and plunger assembly back with the slide. I will say though that this has one of the strongest springs I’ve seen in a while! But coupled with the design, it concerns me over time.

I'm not sure about the brass knuckles Carols trench knife from the Walking Dead grip lol Otherwise I may look into it. The Ultra 4 is fine for me right now. I actually haven't shot any of my 30 blasters outdoors only indoor target shooting. We have the yard distance but it's next to a busy street and neighbor's wooden fences. If I go to the park I'd never find them. One of these days.

I have a theory. Your ultra zero was hitting below Elite average and they went straighter than when they were going above, what other line did that? Vortex, so I wonder if ultra has a more similar science to vortex discs than standard darts.

Ok, so we can conclusively say Ultra works better in Springers (would probably also do well in compressed air, but DUH), and probably also better when it has enough of a barrel to... actually guide the dart straight (given the issue the One had with them literally coming out sideways). I still have reservations; the supposed durability they have against crushing isn't very helpful when they can only be fired a couple of times before being too worn out to function properly. The all black bodies. Even with the kind of performance we'd like to see out of them, it's not worth the cost of ammo if you /can't find your damn darts again/.
