Notice how in the first scene the audience fires there blasters and throw a tomato at him, but they all miss... who would have such a terrible aim

Fun fact: the moment my brother found out the hole Luke shot was the exhaust Port (it's been some time since he's watched it) he immediately asked "wait, how is that a flaw, it would need an exhaust port". Not in those words exactly, but that was the sentiment.

New headcanon: After firing the guy skilled enough to miniaturize the exhaust ports beyond all reasonable belief. The millennium falcon sized hole was a result of them not knowing how to make smaller ventilation.

in the legends series, the original architect said basically this and was punished in a way that is best described in 'horrifying'. First time it failed he was sentenced by palpatine to be eaten alive by carnivorous beetles. Then something else happened, I don 't remember what but he was sentenced to be bathed in molten bronze. Palpatine had him cloned after each of these incidents.

They really needed a sign on that exhaust port stating 'Magic Free Zone'.

I've been saying this for years! It wasn't a design flaw, and if that's the best a saboteur could come up with, I'd be questioning his allegiance. The fact that the rebels even attempted the maneuver was suicide.

They literally made a movie to address this. Which makes this video so much better.

i still believe, that the exhaust port ISN'T the vulnerability he put into the plans as in: there is a real vulnerability that you can realistically exploit the rebels just never found it, they overlooked the real design-flaw and for some reason became fixated on the exhaust port

We should blame the core designer who didn't make it bombproof

I noticed he keeps calling it a bomb, but a proton torpedo is technically a self-propelled explosive device akin to a missile. They are more manouverable than they seem, and are easily able to make a downward turn like they did in the trench run. According to the wiki, the exhaust port was ray-shielded (resistant against lasers, but something the alliance torpedoes could penetrate) as normal shields would not allow the exhaust port to vent properly.

'Rogue one' explained the first Death Star, but I'm still waiting on 'Red six' to explain the second one.

"Nah... we'll just put a shield around the new one, generated from the nearby moon. Problamo solved. What? Those little teddy bears? They won't be a problem!"

I know this video was posted a long time ago so I don't know if anyone's going to see my comments, but the Death Star was actually coated in a couple hundred exhaust ports, all of them shielded. It was complete pure God all f****** Mighty luck that one port happened to have its shielding down and they just so happened to end up firing at THAT one specific port

It's so frustrating to watch them correct a common misunderstanding so effectively, just to see them make a much bigger misunderstanding right at the end. The "Millennium Falcon sized" hole was because it was UNFINISHED.

This is akward to watch after Rogue One

For those watching after Rogue One: The thermal exhaust port itself was not the trap made by Galen. The trap was the chain reaction that was caused by such a shot obliterating the station rather than just crippling it. You really think the empire wouldn't notice a thermal exhaust port going straight to the main reactor? Not that such an explanation was needed. To reach the exhaust port one had to A- fight through hundreds of imperial ties B- get past hundreds more turbolasers, of which the slightest touch would vaporize a star-fighter C- navigate a long trench while dodging turbolasers and enemy fighters with little to no room to dodge And D- somehow, while dodging fighters and turbolasers as stated above, successfully shoot at least 1 torpedo through a miniscule opening in such a perfect way that it wouldn't impact the surface of the exhaust port or angle on its 60 kilometer decent down the shaft and impact on one of the inner shaft walls WHILE flying several tens of thousands MPH Han's claim that the shot was "one in a million" is an vast understatement. That shot is literally impossible without MASSIVE plot convenience aka the force literally holding Luke's hand and guiding his aim and timing.

OH WAIT WE LIVE IN A GALAXY FULL OF MAGIC SPACE WIZARDS

BTW, you got the whole "force choked" and whole multiple death's thing. Cuz the Tarkin was the Architect. And he was cloned just to die many times by Emperor's hands for his mistakes.

I never thought the exhaust port was a design flaw for the reasons stated in the video. Going to add the fact that the rebellion would never have even known of the exhaust port if they never got the Death Star plans.

The fact is, even in the new canon, it’s not the exhaust port's fault. The sabotage consisted of rigging the core to explode the entire station. It should also be pointed out that the designers never thought it would be possible for any fighters to get anywhere near the station, firstly because they just never thought of hyperspace capable fighters, and because the station should have been equipped with so many TIE fighters that the rebels would never have been able to gather a sufficient amount of pilots to take it by force. The loss of the Death Star was more due to the fact that it was understaffed, and because the entire Imperial military doctrine was flawed

Actually in cannon the guy was killed, brought back to life, only to be killed again and had to repeat the cycle as much as Palpatine wanted, and he still had to design the second death star. Poor fella.

Another fun fact: This guy suffered far, FAR worse at the hands of the Emperor for the screw-up. He was first executed by being sealed in a tube with flesh-eating insects. Then, through the magic of cloning and Sith Alchemy, his soul was placed into a clone body to be executed AGAIN, I think by being slowly lowered into a vat of molten copper. This kept going for like another seven or eight times before the Rebel Alliance found him and put him out of his misery for good.

Rogue One doesn't invalidate this video. Galen stated that he rigged the reactor to be unstable, not that he planted the exhaust port. Even then he put it in a trench covered with gun turrets. Also, keep in mind that everyone who made that run *died*. Some of which were legitimately prodigy pilots. Also remember how Luke stated that the computer could hit it? He. Was. Wrong. Red Leader, with a perfect shot and lock from the computer *missed*. The exhaust port *can't be hit conventionally*. Even then Vader would have killed Luke had Han not shown up. So even with the powerful force sensitive in the history of the galaxy, guided by the spirit of one of the greatest Jedi in galactic history, escorted by two of the best pilots in the Empire *Failed*. Why is this a thing? It was a *fluke*. Also, to address the second Death Star. They solved the design flaw. Instead of one exhaust port, several thousand millimeter wide ones were spread throughout the station. The reason there were holes in it is because it was still under *fucking construction*. How do you think they are going to get large parts and supplies to the deeper parts of station? Heck the work on the reactor was only completed *hours* beforehand (remember at the start of the movie the Moff was begging for more time).

If the rocket was required to make a 90 degree turn downward after being fired, how was anyone in the rebellion expecting the mission to succeed? They had the schematics, and so they had to have known about this. At this point, no one in the Rebel Forces knew of Luke's Jedi abilities, and therefore could not have known he would be able to make that impossible shot. And if someone, somehow, did know of Luke's abilities, then why were other pilots also trying to make the shot instead of just providing cover fire for Luke? What if Luke had died in the battle? The Rebellion would be royally fucked!

I can imagine Galen Erso just looks around and whistling his way during this meeting. (Spoiler) If he were alive at this point.

I was always more concerned with how rebels even found such a small thing (less than 2 meters of diameter) on plans of battlestation in size of a moon (900 KILOMITERS diameter) that would take years!!!

In the old canon the designer of the Death star (Bevel Lemelisk in the old canon) was cloned half a dozen times and tortured horribly to his death while maintaining his memories as a punishment for having included the exhaust port as a weakness on the first Death Star.

That is true as like he said he was able to make the vent the size of a swamp rat is very powerful as it would cost so much pressure from the exhaust it would make it impossible to get really anything in there because even if you could get it like a foot in it would be shot out like a cannon
