Critical thinking skills are long becoming a thing of the past as people have the knowledge at their fingertips but would rather watch a 12-20 second video then learn something.

I grew up in high school when cell phones were not a thing yet. “I’ll meet you at 7pm at the mall”. Was the era I came from.

Jerry, I'm with you 100% on this. All I see is zombie nation, kids and younger adults wandering around phones in hand constantly, Snapchat and Tiktok. Blinkered from the real world. They couldn't tie shoelaces without watching a tutorial video.. It's probably why Crocs are trending 😂

Yea, I hear you about the lack of ability in many people when it comes to solving everyday issues. I suppose it's a problem with many of our society slipping down that slippery slope... Some of the best advice I got when starting out working, and thinking that people with college degrees were smart and knew everything, was from an older manager who told me, "don't confuse a college degree with brains". No truer words have ever been spoken!

I am guilty of this. My car had a bad alternator, I replaced 2 of them myself, but they kept overvolting putting out 18 volts and burning out other electrical equipment on the car. I was in the military and doing and doing a permanent change of station and they give you a set amount of time to drive to the next base, so I was in a hurry. After the 3rd alternator went out again, I took it to the dealer. They charged me $1400. Then, the dealers alternator shit the bed. They replaced it under warranty again. So 5 alternators later I popped the hood, and found a broken ground wire. I soldered it back together and was good to go. Sad thing is even the dealer missed it. If I waited for them to fix the problem, I never would have made it to the next base in time. That was 10 years ago and was the last time I will ever take my car to a dealer.

It's a problem I call "outsourcing". An example: My family outsource their health to the state, and now they're all on patented meds sold to government by pharmaceutical corporations who make billions every year. When I suffer from any illness, I look at the science and figure out a cheap solution that doesn't require meds. I developed psoriasis in my 30s but completely cured it with supplements which are a fraction of the cost of meds, and it's a total cure not symptom control. People outsource their thinking skills to government, corporations, news media, social media "influencers", and more. Gone are the days of people learning for themselves and developing critical thinking skills that actually solve problems.

So, true confessions here, that I beat my own brains out replacing the upper and lower control arms & ball joints on my ‘13 Chevy Avalanche. A big job. Along the way, I intended to replace the inner tie rods and outer ends. Well, I didn’t have the right tool to get the inner tie rod off. I could have ordered a tool large enough to get that big inner nut off, but instead, I rolled over (pretty much literally) and took the car to a shop for the tie rods and the required alignment. I was out of time, and moreso out of patience, so I paid a pro to do a job I could have done myself. So, I pissed away several hundred paying someone else to do a job I could have done, if I had the tool for the job. Now the job is finished, the alignment done, and the ride is factory new. Hopefully I’ll get another 10 years out of this all new front end. Cheers.

This is a pretty sweet solution, Jerry. The locks on there will deter 99% of the idiots looking to steal shit, and those with an allen wrench better hope you don't come back in the 30 minutes it'll take them to get the hood mounts off. Self reliance and DIY are things rarely taught any more. At least there's some folks out there still doing it, for now.

When it comes to society these days the current +40 generation were raised in a much different environment and were made to think and figure something out. 20 year olds these days don't get taught those skills so they don't understand simple concepts. I do my best to be a role model and help teach and not look down and if I can make the smallest difference than I feel that one more person in society will have a better chance and understanding things better.

I rarely watch TV anymore as I would rather watch RU-vid educational videos than TV. Even if it's something I already know how to do, i might find a better way of doing it or a trick that makes it easier. I would rather expand my mind than rot it watching mindless TV shows.

I am 45 years old and always struggled with math and worked like 6 months in retail handling money. I am one that can not do this math in my head and need a tool or something to assist. That doesn't mean I am dumb or inept it just means I have skills in other areas that are stronger and more pertinent to what I am doing. Don't be quick to judge others so easily or quickly just cause you can do something better than someone else.

Milwaukee makes some pretty dope tools, but fuck that useless POS. My 115v DeWalt will cut that no time. In regard to useless people, they didn’t have parents that had to work with their hands. So many things can be fixed and people just buy new parts. I won a 12 pack of beer on a bet when I cleaned and repacked the bearings on my friend’s idler bearings when he couldn’t find a new one without waiting for a week. You can’t even turn rotors anymore because the new ones are so thin that one set of pads and their toast. Same with people that use a parts cannon to try and fix a car problem. They need to bring back shop classes!
